Imac duo hard drive partition

I have my new imac 20 duo arriving tomorrow & plan on installing windows. This is my first mac in 12 years and I intend to partition the hard drive to 30 gigs for windows xp. I only want to use the pc for photoshop cs2 and ms office and a few other pc programs but not to access the internet except for updates. On the 30gig pc side is it better to use fat32 or nfts?? Since I have these programs I hate to scrap them. Any ideas will be appreciated. Jim Johnston

That should be more than enough. I have a laptop at work, with notes, Oracle Developer Tools, and a number of other programs, all on a 15 GB partition. Just make sure you don't want anything else. Once you create the partition, there is no way to change it with out wiping it out.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

  • 27 inch imac's hard drive has failed.

Hi guys my 27 inch imac's hard drive has failed and I need to replace it. it was a seagate 1tb ST31000528AS. Any suggestions what to replace it with.

    No worries,
Any SSD should work I recommend either OWC or Crucial SSDs, but you will still need an aftermarket optical drive temp sensor or the software to slow the fans down.
    I recommend:
    For software: http://exirion.net/ssdfanctrl/
    Temperature sensor:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iMac-21-5-A1311-Mid-2010-Optical-Drive-Temp-Sensor -Cable-922-9624-/151521177860?
You will also need a bracket to mount it on-http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer+Technology/ADPTADRV/
    iFixit guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2309+and+2374+Hard+Drive+Rep lacement/1634
You will just need to swap out the HDD bracket with the above one mentioned.
    Good Luck
PS: If you are interested in installing it in the 3rd SATA slot or replace the optical drive with an SSD please say so

  • How do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition?

how do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition? the drive is set up into 3 partitions C, HP_tools and, recovery, C has space and would like to move some to HP_tools that is full. when I run backup I get drive full. I have run backup now to an external drive so that is not an issue.

    Hi,
Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk  Management. Please use the following tutorial:

  • My iMac's hard drive keeps filling up.

My iMac's hard drive keeps filling up. It has 320GB but only 1.37GB free! Other than Photos (3.43GB) and Songs (12.34GB), I have hardly anything installed on it. I recently got the message "Disc almost full...". Everytime I delete something (and I've delete a lot of things now) the free space relentlessly depletes. I have tried searching for files or programs that might be taking up a lot of space but can't find anything unusual or big enough to make a difference. I saw another comment from someone saying it was Mail failed downloads or something like that and suggested changing Finder preferences to "Other" to find the hidden files. But after doing this, I cannot find anything that looks bad. Look at the screenshot below, which shows what's taking up the disc space. How can the "Other" possibly be taking up 297.71GB when there's hardly anything on my mac that's bigger than 1GB!?!? Please help....

Do you own and backup any iDevices?
Anything else you have on this drive?
Any other places you store personal data?
You have any images or photos anywhere else?
You have a lot of documents?
Have you emptied OS X Trash icon recently.
iPhoto has its own trash the needs emptying.
Have you emptied the trash in Apple's Mail app?
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects?
    Good Luck!

hi, i have a late 2008 15 inch macbook pro, which have a mini display port.
I noticed that thunderbolt and mini display port looks a like. So, my question is :
can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.
    thank you

    ken94538,
no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro.

  • I purchased the multi-user iworks and recently had to replace my white imac's hard drive but didn't pay to fix the CD drive.  My iworks does not have a serial number on the box and now that my CD drive isn't working how can I reinstall this software?

I purchased the multi-user iworks (yes back when it was new, 2009 or 2010 and recently had to replace my white imac's hard drive (but didn't pay to fix the CD drive).  My iworks does not have a serial number on the box and now that my CD drive isn't working how can I reinstall this software?

Buy or borrow an external USB optical drive.
See the confirmation email or covering letter to obtain the serial number. If you have lost it, contact the supplier.

  • 2007 iMac, replaced hard drive, can't recover old files from old hard drive!

So I have a 2007 intell imac, the hard drive went out, I replaced it and bought a thermalake blacx hard drive doc to get my files off the old hard drive.  I run Disk Utility, it can see the old hard drive but it can't repair it or verify it.  Do I need to get a third party to get the info off hte old hard drive??? HELP!!!HELP!!!!!

You could use a data recovery service but that's going to be really expensive. You could also try a data recovery software like DataRescue III http://store.apple.com/us/product/TX415LL/A/prosoft-data-rescue-3
    Or DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
Either might help, I prefer DiskWarrior, but it's also possible that neither will. A hard lesson learned regarding backups I suppose.

Hi my 4 year old Imac's hard drive keeps starting, whirring briefly, then stopping, when the machine is asleep.  Doesn't do it when in actual use.  The Imac is working perfectly otherwise.  Any ideas?

Gracias mi amigo; there are a lot of options on the side bar in console, but I think I can see the issue - calendar agent - thousands of entries, all identical. Recently installed outlook 2011, so ? conflicting with Ical?

  • PB G4, hard drive partitioned

Hello,  My PB G4 has its hard drive partitioned into 4 equal, separate discs.  Can I merge 2 or more of these to make a larger disc?  Thanks.

    Allan,
I "inherited" this partioned disc and computer from my work, from which I've retired, but was allowed to keep.  The IT guy who initially set it up partioned it for reasons that elude me.  My problem is with iPhoto; I have too may pictures and it has used all the space in the partition.  Is it true that the iPhoto app and its picture folder need to be on the same disc? I've been working under this assumption, and this is the reason I need to create a larger disc, by merging 2 or more other discs, to handle the iPhoto picture folder.  I ope this makes a bit of sense.  Thanks again for your help.
       Mike
PS I would fix the optical drive, but I'm hoping to get a newer computer in the not so distant future and will then relagate this old fellow to my wife for her e-mails.

  • How big is your imacs formatted hard drive?

Id like to know what the size of other imac users hard drives are in formatted capacity.
I have a 160GB, but its only 148.73 GB. Id like to see what capacity other people are getting, even if its a different sized hard drive.
    Thanks

The size difference comes down to how you define Gigabyte (GB):
    1. For HD manufacturers 1GB = 1000MB = 1000000KB = 1000000000bytes
    2. For a computer 1GB = 1024MB = 1048576KB = 1073741824bytes
    So a 160GB hard drive according to its manufacturer has 160000000000bytes but for a computer that is 156250000KB (160000000000/1024) = 152587MB (156250000/1024) = 149GB (152587/1024)

  • Is Removing or Modifying the HP Tools hard drive partition possible?

I am trying to dual boot WIndows 7 Home Premium and Ubuntu. Windows 7 is already installed and I was trying to create a hard drive partition for Ubuntu. However, why I try to create a partition, I cannot create another primary partition because I can only have 4 primary partitions on my hard drive. THe four I have right now are:
    (C
    HP_TOOLS
    RECOVERY (D
    SYSTEM
I was wondering if there was a way to merge any two of these partitions so that I will only have 3 primary partitions. Or would simply deleting the HP_TOOLS partition be wroth it? ANy help would be great.

    Hi MNJC,
Thank you for you inquiry.   I will do my best to assist you.
I understand you would like, a dual boot system and want to know about partitions.  Here is a Microsoft document on  Dual boot windows 7 and windows 8 that I think will help you. Please let me know if you are successful.

  • IMac Intel Core Duo Hard Drive Replacement

I may need to replace my iMac (Intel Core Duo) HD soon; I'm wondering whether the Geek Squad does work on Macs. Also, is this something a person can do themselves with good directions, or is that risky. I've put in memory, but think the HD is probably a step up. I have everything backed up and would get all my stuff back on HD myself. Has anyone had experience with Mac repair here?
    Solved!

    Welcome, Selia!
We certainly do work on Macintosh computers.  The criteria is: "Is the part user-serviceable?"  We would need to sendthe unit in for upgrade to our repair center if it is not something Apple has in their DIY section of their website.  This is toensure consistency and to avoid any issues if still under warranty. Typically only Mac Book laptop hard drives areserviceable in the store.
Either way, I recommend letting an Agent assist you in the store.  Let us know if you need further answers.
