orig 400DV that someone had installed X, but apparently forgot to upgrade firmware. i replaced motherbd w/500 DV and upgraded the HD. VOILE! maching booted w/OSX cd, and i installed after utility chedked drive. now it will not boot, and on the screen(gray) script in upper left reads "default catch" code 300... Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.7f4 Boot ROM. Goes on to say i must type mac-boot and press enter to continue. alas! Nothin. force start gives me a quick picture of OSX staaring, then the gray screen w/ script. i have an apple boot dosc 600-7710 from ebay, but the mac won't recognize the CD slot with or wo the C key held. havn't tried to reset P-ram, and willawait advice from youse guys. Clean install OS.10.6.8 update it completly. May be you ignored some firmware update.
I have two incedents.
My thunderbolt port stopped working after upgrading to ML 10.8. I booted from external 10.6 , 10.7 still didnt work. Then i clean installed 10.6.8 and ran software update it updated the thunderbolt firmware and all is well now. This firmware update for some reason didnt show up in ML 10.8.
Secondly , when i upgraded my Brother's Macbook from 10.5 to 10.6.3 it would install but stuck with crossed out circle. Then i downgraded checked for update found an efi update , then the 10.6.3 worked fine.

Hi fellow Mac users,
My mother's G5 iMac suddenly stopped booting after no significant event. Here is some information :
- When the Mac boots up, I get a flashing folder icon.
- When running the extended Apple Hardware Test (from the original Tiger DVD), I get no error, even the hard drive (Mass Storage) seems to be fine.
- When I boot on the Leopard DVD, the hard drive doesn't show up in disk utility.
I think the hard drive is broken, do you agree or is there something else that I am missing ? I am confused because the test says nothing about the hard drive.

Thanks. I tried but everything is fine on this side, the first three LEDs are On and the last is Off as expected.

Pressing cmd+R does nothing. I get a grey screen and the computer eventually reboots after a while.
The computer seems fine appart from the fact that there is no hard drive detected. But shouldn't the Apple Hardware Test say something about it ?

You've probably tried this, but will it Safe Boot? Restart holding down the Shift key until you see the grey progress bar. You'll need to input your admin password during bootup. If it will boot you can then try to eject the disk using the various suggestions here that you haven't tried already:

IMac G5 won't boot from CD drive, Please Help

My iMac G5 won't boot from the CD drive. There is no operating system on the hard drive so I want to install a fresh copy of Leopard. I have tried a couple different methods, but I keep getting the same end result. The first method I tried was booting from the CD drive by holding the C key during start up. The Leopard disc was automatically ejected after about 20-30 seconds. The second method I tried was booting the iMac to the "question mark file screen," which is when I inserted the Leopard disc. Usually on other Mac computers, this is when the computer will show the Apple logo and prompt you with the installation process. Not this iMac, it just ejects the disc shortly after I insert it. I'm not sure if it's the CD drive that is having the issue, the hard drive, or something else.
If you have any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated!

Where did you get the CD from?
If it is from another Mac, it is probably specific to the hardware in that Mac and is not capable of boot your iMac.

I have a 2 yr. old 23.5" iMac that won't boot up. Is there a history of power supply failure or mother board failure on these macines?

Have you tried resetting the SMC? Unplug power cord for 15 seconds. Plug back in and then press power button.

IMac 2007 won't boot

I have a strange problem.
My 24" iMac 2007 won't boot. It won't boot either from CD/DVD or anything. It will display the white screen with the Apple logo, and the spinning wheel under it, until the spinning wheel will stop spinning. Using my old Linux knowledge, I find that it seems like it freezes on "Login Window Application". Before this happened the iMac would occationally freeze, creating strange wave-patterns across the screen.
I have tried the following:
1) safe mode - same result
2) reset NVRAM - same result
3) single user - I can fix the filesystem, delete loginmanager files - same result
4) boot from Apple CD - same result
Every time the computer hangs, the strange waves will appear on the screen. My guess it is the video card that's causing this - and I need to replace it.
Can anyone give me heads an idea to confirm my suspicion - or to find the real culprit?

OK, thanks, that was a helpful reply.
Somewhere in my browsing, I gathered that any Mac OS install disk would have the AHT. After searching around, I found the CD/DVD.
After extended testing, the AHT says nothing's wrong, but I find two things strange:
1) the AHT tells me that my memory is 1 GB, while it is 2 GB.
2) the AHT tells me nothing about my HDD - as if it's not there.....
I make two conclusions from that; namely that one RAM block is faulty and the HDD is invisible seen from AHT. The latter would stress me immensely, if I hadn't seen the entire drive from single user mode before. There could be some faulty sectors though that would mean that the OS is behaving strangely.
Please advise on hints on where you would go next - anyone?

Looks like you have both an Intel and an older iMac G5 PPC. Do you hear the chime on startup?
The chime is quite meaningful. It means the computer passed the P.O.S.T / Power On Self Test.

I've scoured the web looking for answers, and can't find any, so maybe someone here would be kind enough to help. I'm working on an imac 350 blueberry for my sister and I'm having all sorts of trouble.
She bought it last week, it started up (8.6 os) no problem. Powered up and down a few times, then all of a sudden, it won't boot. I'm currently getting blinking folder/happymac/question mark when trying to start up.
Here's the big problem - the keyboard and mouse do not work now. I've tried three different mice and three keyboards and no dice with any of them. I have the 8.6 CD from her previous imac (bondi), and I can hear it spinning, but there is no way to start up from cd.
I've also tried 2 other hard drives with the same results.
Tried resetting CUDA on logic board, taking out battery, no change. Bought new battery- no change.
I would love to at least get the keyboard working to see if I can even startup from cd, anyone have any clues on how to get it working? The strange thing is that the keyboard has a power on button, and it works to start the thing up, but dies when it tries to boot. Sometimes I just get a grey screen with the pointer icon, and I can move the pointer with the mouse for a second or two, then no response.
I appreciate any help or suggestions on locating the issues!

When I said "but dies when it tries to boot" and "..then no response." I meant that the keyboard works to power up the computer, but won't work for anything else. So, I am figuring that the usb ports are supplying power to the keyboard and mouse, but the usb ports aren't relaying information from the keyboard or mouse.
How do you know the mouse isn't working? Won't you have to wait until later in the boot to tell?
The poweron key is a special case. I think that it works by lowering/changing the voltage on one of the usb cables. I read about this somewhere. Anyway, this function was eliminated from later usb keyboards and macs. Maybe a working power button doesn't mean what you think.

Could you try powering up from the machine? Is there a power button on the lower right of the machine?

The letters are in lower case. Hold all down then poweron the machine. I'd poweron from the machine as apposed to the keyboard.
You could try another usb keyboard.
We actually did boot up the computer several times with it upside down. Not for any reason, except it's become a real PIA to flip it over every two minutes to start it, then take it apart and boot again. When booting either upside down or right side up it shows the same thing - blinking folder w/finder icon and question mark.
Yes, I agree. You could try removing the clear plastic around the bottom of the machine. At least you will not have to slide in the carriage. Note. The tv portion will still be surrounded by plastic! Don't remove the plastic around the tv!

Richard: Is this the orginal keyboard? When did Apple get rid of the poweron key from the keyboard? My iMac 600 didn't have the key and my iMac 233 does.

Imac g5 won't boot from any Cd/DVD

Hey,
New member here.
I have an Imac 20" 1.8 Ghz PowerPC G5, running Mac OS X 10.4.9.
My problem is my computer won't boot from from any DVD or Cd, not the original system disc (10.3.5), not from a newer Imac system disc (10.4.7), not from a Disc Warrior 3.03 disc.
What I get from the Disc Warrior disc is a gray screen with white letters backed in black, saying
"panic (cpu 0 caller 0xooze49do): unable to find driver for this platform: "powermac8,1""
Plus other stuff written underneath it, looking like a log of how far it went.
When I try to boot from the original 10.3.5 DVD, it does boot up but doesn't work after that - it gets to the language to choose and stops.
When I try to boot from the 10.4.7 DVD, I get the gray screen, same results as the Disc Warrior cd.
I even copied my system folder (10.4.9) onto a firwire drive and start from that, but I get the gray screen again.
I zapped the pram, and reset the Open Firmware - still no dice.
Can anybody shed some light on this?!?

Hi, I am completely flummoxed.
Yesterday I had my iMac G4 networked (via FireWire cable) to my MacBook Pro. I was copying about 14 GB of data from the MBP to the G4. The MBP indicated the copy operation was finished, but the G4 went into a spinning beachball, from which I could not escape -- couldn't force-quit, change applications, open terminal, or anything. So I (reluctantly) did a hard power-down.
When I went to restart the G4, I got a grey screen of death -- for about 2 minutes. Then the screen goes black for a second, then goes grey again, this time with the alternating folder-and-question-mark icon. Bad news.
Here is what I have tried so far:
* Won't boot into target mode -- if I hold down T at startup, the screen stays black (never gets to the grey screen, or to the FireWire icon).
* Won't boot into single-user or verbose mode -- if I hold down cmd-S or cmd-V, computer stays grey.
* Won't boot in safe mode -- ditto.
So my next idea was to try booting from a startup disk. But how to open the optical drive tray? (This is a tray-loader, not a slot-loader.) I pulled down the white external door manually, but do not see an emergency open pinhole inside. But there must be one, right?
Does anybody have any other ideas on how I can break into this thing, or what might have gone wrong with it?

I'm not at a G4 iMac right now, but other tray-load drives of that generation had a hole but ti's very low in the opening. Probably need a good light to see it.
Try starting the computer and holding the mouse button down while it's trying to boot. This is a startup shortcut to open the drive but may require that the system start to load, something with which yours is obviously struggling.
Does the iMac have the original Apple keyboard? Some third-party keyboards may not support the startup combos for safe mode, single-user, etc.

I have an iMac G5, no iSight, it won't boot up. It briefly displays the Folder icon with blinking question mark, then White screen. The first time it happened, I rebooted from an external Firewire drive, but only once. When I tried that again, it would not boot.
I disconnected all external devices, no boot.
I can't do Target Disk mode, can't boot from external disk (except that one time-weird exception), can't boot from Install CD. It WAS Open Firmware password protected, but I can't remember if I disabled it or not agfter my last hardware failure. (Note to the wise: if you have an older machine, don't use Open Firmware Password, it can greatly complicate troubleshooting when the inevitable failure happens).

So I opened the back of the iMac. All three LEDs are good, indicating good power supply. I reset the SMU using the little button switch, then tried reboot with the little power button switch. Still no reboot. I tried re-seating the RAM cards, still no reboot.
I'm at the end of my bag of tricks. Does anyone have a suggestion? Is it a hardware problem?

Well you could try to reset the PRAM, but if your drive is dying it won't help, although it's worth a try.
You can also try using Disk Utility:
Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If none of that works, it's time to take it in.

IMac G5 won't boot to either HD or CD

I am working on an iMac G5 (no iSight) that gets power, but boots to the little folder with the ?. I have tried booting to the hardware test CD that came with the computer, and the OS reinstallation CD that also came with the computer, both with the same result. If I hold down the Option key while booting, it sees both options (hard drive and cd) but when either one is chosen to boot to, it appears to be in a loop and comes back to the same screen to choose something to boot to.
I have removed the HD and run Disk Utility to repair the disk. It repaired an invalid leaf record count, but that didn't fix the problem either. I have tested RAM to no avail, I have reset the SMU. I am afraid it might be the SATA channel(s) on the logic board. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

You will need a stronger utility to repair. The following will do the job:
DiskWarrior
Highly recommended for *directory damage* repairs.
TechTool Pro
Multi-functional utility.
Drive Genius Multi-functional utility.
You will need to make your own decision on which to purchase. Read up on them on their websites because each does something a little different.
You must use the versions that are compatible w/your OS system & keep the utilities updated to avoid damaging/harming/trashing your system.
