IMac early 2008 8800GS video card issue

I have had this machine for 2.5 years and all is fine until 1 day (mid of Nov) that it would not start (blank screen after apple logo).
Nov 19, 2010
I brought it to the Richmond centre apple store in Richmond, BC, Canada (since I have applecare). I was told by the apple genius there he would need to replace the logicboard and the video card with estimates of $1500+ (i was thinking i m so lucky that I have bought applecare). The repair took 1 full week and at the end they only replaced the video card. I was happy to have my imac back (Nov 25, 2010)
Dec 7, 2010
The iMac would not start up again (same symptoms to the first one) except that this time I was able to boot into safe mode (any other modes or from ext HD or DVD will not work). In safe mode, the screen has a huge vertical bars like barcode, so I have no other choice but to bring it back to apple store again (this time to Oakridge Centre in Vancouver, BC). The Apple genius there said there's a problem with the logic board and they will replace it. The repair took 1 day and both logicboard and video card were replaced (Dec 9, 2010).
Dec 30, 2010
The iMac would not start again (blank screen after apple logo). This time I m so frustrated. How can you have repair the machine 2 times, replace most of the machine components and yet the machine would not start. I m losing so much confidence with both the iMac and the technicians at the Apple store. I give the machine a few more chances to boot/cooldown, disconnect to power source. It would boot up after disconnected to the power source for extended time but the screen garbled up as soon as you bring up the dashboard or attempt to use any applications.
Jan 1, 2011
New day of the year and I have to bring the iMac to repair. I ask for either a replacement or a refund as I have no confidence in the machine that I have. The Genius said that we cannot do that but we will take it in and have a look (I have no other choice but to leave it with the hands of the technicians.)
Jan 3, 2011
Apple technician called around 8pm in the evening, he told me the problem was with the LVDS cable that attaches the logic board to the lcd panel. I was very patient (because i seriously don't think it's the LVDS cable) and not let my anger out as he is just a fellow who's trying to fix my computer. Long story short, he told me they don't have the parts and need another 3-5 days.
Anybody has a similar problem? Does it make sense that the LVDS cable can cause the mac not able to boot up?

I agree that policy with regard to replacement of online purchases vs in-store doesn't make any sense. As a customer, this experience would of frustrated me a lot. It's good you were able to eventually get a new iMac but it makes sense for them to try to fix it first before replacing it. I think before the 3rd repair I would've escalated the issue until I got to the store leader. If they understand you need it back quickly, they will usually do their best to make you happy. Of course, not everybody's perfect.
In my experience, if you need to have something soon, you need to politely go up the management chain. I never heard of the first tier employee being able to replace an iMac or do any other kind of replacement. It's always the store leaders and Genius admins that can accommodate these kind of issues.
The store leader is your friend and it's their store's reputation on the line. Ask for his/her email address and vent out your frustration to them. Recommend what you would've done as an AppleCare person to accommodate your issue. It's this kind of feedback that makes them better. Who knows, they may even reward you for your valuable feedback.

  • MacPro Early 2008 Display/Video Card Problem

*Hello, I have a Dual Quad-Core 2.8Ghz MacPro (Early 2008) with the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB Video Card. I believe I am having the exact same symptoms listed on the topic "Mac Pro 2008 Video Card Problem".*
*MacPro has been working fine. Until one day, I power it on and the display stays black. There is nothing you can do besides holding down the power button and rebooting the computer. I have tried to do this many times and the display will not come up. I have also tried resetting the VRAM and PRAM settings - still did not work. I have had my MacPro for about one year and a half. It is in very good condition (no damage/no liquid/no overheating). From time to time, you power on the computer and the display works! It is very random. I am scared to turn off the computer or put it to sleep as this can also trigger the problem.*
*I did not get the extended AppleCare (the MacPro itself already cost me about $3400!) I tested the Cinema Display and it is fine, therefore the problem is not coming from the display.*
*I went to the Apple Store and they kept my MacPro for one night. Called me the next day telling me it was going to cost me approximately $800 in order to fix this problem. They claimed that either my Bluetooth module or my Main Logic Board was causing the display not to show. I am out of warranty, and I think it is very expensive. I am doing my research online in order to try and find a cheaper solution. After reading the discussions and checking out some other websites. I have a few questions:*
*If I buy a NEW* ATI Radeon HD 2600 and install it in my MacPro - will it fix my problem?*
*OR - I also heard about the ATI Radeon HD 4870 - Is that graphic card compatible with my MacPro - will that resolve the problem?*
*Do you think I should give it a shot? Are there any other things I can try?*
*I am thinking that I should try to replace the graphic card first and see if that is causing the problem instead of replacing the Main Logic Board right away (which will cost me over $500)*
*Please let me know of any thoughts that come in mind. I really need some support. I am a college student studying Audio Engineering and I use my MacPro everyday on Pro Tools and Logic. This machine is my life.*
    *Thank You,*
    *Kevin C.*

Glad you solved your problem Gaunja. Here's an update on my own.
When last heard from I had diagnosed the failure of my displays to boot up to graphics card problem in my early 2008 Mac Pro with my stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 by swapping out the same card from my son's Mac Pro and seeing the displays boot up fine. Before heading off to the Apple store for a new card I reinstalled my suspect video card just to see what would happen. The displays booted up fine. Now, two weeks later, again no video display--black screens--no signal from the graphics card. I rebooted the computer several times to no avail and was, again, about to head off to the Apple store for a new card. This time "just to see what would happen" I moved the graphics card to another slot and bingo, the displays are up. What can be determined from my experience to date?
    1. The graphics card is flirting with death. Like a patient unwilling to die, through a mysterious force, it rallies to live another day.
    2. The slot the card came installed in is unreliable--it's dirty, there's a spec of dust in there, a contact has degraded after two years, or some other slot related fault. Note that, until the card failed for the first time, it had never been removed from it's slot, the computer was treated gently, and it operated in a very clean environment.
If anyone has another theory about what may be happening here please feel free. I fully expect the displays to go dark again at some point as my suspicions are that it's the card itself that is the problem. The two replacement cards I'm considering are the ATI Radeon HD 4870 or the Nividia Geo Force GT120. I've read that both work with the early Mac Pros. Some complain that the ATI card is noisy and expensive. Based of Gaunja's post and others I think the Nividia card will suit my needs, be quieter, and cost less. But, for now, my stock ATI Radeon 2600 lives!
Just one man's experience with the "Mac Pro display, black screen" problem.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Display freezes using Safari 5.1 after Mac OS 10.74 install - iMac (early 2008)

After installing Mac OS X 10.7.4 on a 24-inch iMac (Early 2008), experiencing display anomalies and freezes, while using Safari and web-based e-mail.
Screen will go all white, system will lock up, requiring power-off restart. Latest incident  while using Safari -- display went green with vertical blue stripes, system hang, requiring power-off restart.
System details:  Intel iMac, 24" (Early 2008), 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.7.4.
Any suggestions on how to resolve these video distortion / system hang problems would be greatly appreciated.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET

  • IMac Early 2008 - Spinning Wheel constantly also in Safe Mode

    Hello Apple Support community!
Recently I've been having much trouble with my iMac Early 2008. In the last 5 years I have never had an issue with it until about 4 days ago and I have no idea how this problem came about.
I have 10.8.5 installed and know a bit about OS X.
Problem Description:  On a recent Dropbox sync where there appeared to be a folder conflict the computer hung and was unresponsive. I had to hard shut down by using the power button. Every successive boot (and attempt for DB to sync) ended in a hang and the spinning wheel. I booted into Safemode, disabled Dropbox as a startup item, rebooted and everything worked for a few hours. Because I needed files from DB i decided to download the update and install. This added DB to the startup items again and history repeated itself. Spinning wheel on startup and a hard shut down again. This time safe mode couldn't save me. I was also getting the spinning wheel there too. I left it for a few days until today when I finally hads the time to troubleshoot.
From my iPad I unlinked the iMac from dropbox and booted it from the install disk to perform a hardward test. The standard test showed no errors so I rebooted. I immediately wanted to do a time machine backup and after 6GB were transferred, Time Machine stalled.  The spinning wheel was back and I had to hard reset. So I started in safe mode and waited for Time Machine to do its thing. It began cleaning up and then managed only about 140MB before hanging.
Next I started the iMac in Firewire target disk mode and tried to transfer the files to my 15" Powerbook (OS 10.4.11) After only 700MB the Firewire logo on the iMac screen stopped moving and the file transfer stalled. I did a hard shut down again.
This time I ran OS 10.5.4 from the install disk and opened disk utility > verify disk to check for errors. None were found so I rebooted into SAFE MODE and wanted to run terminal to clear dyld cache.  Since Finder is unusually sluggish and it seems any mouse-clicking causes the spinning wheel, I waited a bit and then hit command-space to bring up Spotlight into order to launch Terminal. There the iMac hung yet again, but quite strange is that the spotlight search window came up with the description about indexing taking a long time etc etc. I only know that the first time an HD has to be indexed and since this computer is quite old I find that curious.
A.t.m. I am running the extended hardware test from install disk and looking for suggestions about how I can reliably get my data off the HD in order to do a clean install, if I have to. Alternative suggestions to avoid that would be welcome, but I understand that this may be the only solution, if not also having to buy and install a new HD first.
thanks for your help in advance.
    best regards,
    Dan

AHT extended version reports the following error
    4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0)
Google results show only people with SSD drives reporting that. Cause could be a loose cable??
two weeks ago I moved and had to pack the iMac in the original box. However I transported this myself and not the movers.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Problem reinstalling Mac 10.6.8 on iMac early 2008, 2 meg memory.

Have iMac early 2008 2meg memory.  Upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6 then to 10.6.8 but computer ran slow and froze so tried to reinstall OS 10.6 with disc.  Used disc utility to check hard drive and it was ok.  Tried twice to install 10.6 from install disc, but both times failed due to errors.  Existing system 10.6.8 is corrupt so need to reinstall 10.6 then upgrade to 10.6.8 .  I don't want to erase disc as have some apps e.g. CS5, which I don't want to erase.  I also would prefer not having to back up disc apps and then reformat disc.   Any suggestions?  Guess I could make boot drive, erase hard drive OS 10.6.8, and then install new copy.  Had major issues with 10.6.8 running slow and freezing. Could that be 2 meg memory?  Have more memory coming in mail and will upgrade to 4 meg.  Can you run more than the apple recommended 4 meg on this machine?  Thanks for help.  Sorry for the lengthly post.....

To do what you want requires erasing the disk first. There is no way around this.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • IMac early 2008 screen not working properly, lots of lines on screen, re appearing and disappearing at random(normally slowly), computer fine on external screen, any suggestions?

This seemed to happen very suddenly; I left my iMac running while i went out and came in to find that the screen was totally unusable, as you will be able to see from the picture it has a lot of lines that seem to come and go a random and sometimes it goes black all together. What do you think is wrong with it? Logic board? Graphics card? Screen itself?.. also if it is the graphics card, is it separate to the logic board or do both need to be replaced?
    Also some additional info:
    iMac Early 2008
    2.4ghz
    4gb Ram
    OSX 10.9.2
    ATI Radion HD 2400
Actual computer working on external monitor, just not internal
    Thanks

Costs vary by area, I think you may find out though that spending money on a 6+ year computer may not be worth it, you can buy an Apple Refurbished Mac with much more up-to-date specifications and save hundreds of $s. If this is of interest you can only find them on Apple's on-line store, in the US the current link is:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals
Then click the link to the iMacs. If you don't find one you want, continue looking the inventories change frequently, sometimes by the hour.

  • I have an older iMac (early 2008) that eats all my bandwidth when i turn it on. I don't know what's running. is there a fix?

I have an iMac (early 2008) 2.4ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram, 250GB hdd, OS X 10.9.4. About 8 months ago, we got a call from our Internet provider (Cox) telling us we were were eating up about 250GB of bandwidth a month, and they were going to start charging us extra for it. I monitored it for a few days and found that as soon as i turned on the Mac, it started eating up bandwidth. Took it to the Genius bar, but they were clueless.
I just bought a refurb iMac (late 2009) 2.66ghz, Intel Core i5, 8 GB ram, 1TB hdd, OS X 10.9.4. Should I transfer all my files over to this new one from the old iMac, or should I try to get the problem fixed before the transfer. Also, I'm hoping to salvage the old iMac, and let my wife use it once I've got it fixed.

Most often BitTorrent, iCloud, Dropbox, or some other cloud-data application is involved in cases of mysterious bandwidth use by a Mac. If you use iCloud, uncheck at least Photo Stream and Documents & Data in its preference pane and see whether there's any change. If you use third-party network backup or file-sync software, disable that. If you use a torrent client, remove it.
Otherwise, if you're running OS X 10.9 or later, you can see which processes are most active on the network.
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select All Processes from the View menu, if not already selected, and also select the Network tab.
Click the heading of the Sent Bytes column in the process table to sort the entries by bandwidth usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Repeat with the Rcvd Bytes column.

  • Have an iMac Early 2008 + Windows 7 and no sound from speaker out? SOLVED!!

    Hello everyone,
So I'm pleased to say after over a month of trying to solve this annoying problem, it's been solved! Basically, if you have an iMac, Early 2008 edition (8,1) and Windows 7 and notice that the default microsoft driver gives very low sound and the new realtek drivers only give sound through the internal speakers... then this solution is for you!
    What you'll need:
    7-zip (www.7-zip.com)
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Disc 1 (NOT Snow Leopard!)
Here's what you'll need to do, step by step:
    1) Uninstall the Realtek Driver (latest version currently 2.37) by going to Control Panel / Programs / Uninstall Programs.
    2) Reboot. Upon reboot, the system will automatically reinstall the default Microsoft drivers. You can check this in Device Manager (control panel / system / device manager).
    3) Insert the original Leopard Disc 1 that came with your iMac (very important, as this is the only driver I know for sure will work). Point windows explorer to the folder: D:\Boot Camp\Drivers (assuming d: is your cd-rom drive).
    4) Copy the "RealTekSetup.exe" file somewhere on your desktop. Do NOT install it!
    5) Decompress "RealTekSetup.exe" by right clicking the file and choosing "7-zip decompress". Again, you'll need to make sure you installed 7-zip from 7zip.com prior to doing this.
    6) Go to your Device Manager again, right click the sound device (which should be something like High Definition Audio) and choose "Update Device Software".
    7) Select "Browse my computer for driver software" and direct it to the folder that you extracted the drivers to.
    8) You now have sound through your EXTERNAL SPEAKERS!
This works because there is a bug that RealTek/Apple does not seem to want to fix where the newer version of the RealTek control panel detects the speaker out as line in and the line in as nothing! This forces drivers normally made for Vista or Vista64 to install on Windows 7, which work 100% great.
I promise you, if you have an Early 2008 iMac, this WILL fix your problem if you follow each step! Let me know if you have any questions!
    Brad Levicoff

If you don't have any Leopard disk then just google for "Vista_R199.exe".
This driver works nice on Early 2008 IMAC. I also tried an earlier version, Vista_R182.exe but there sometimes was a horrible background noise which made listening to music impossible.
Just download and follow the instructions above in the first post.
    Have fun.

  • Two video cards issue

Any fix for the "Hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth" when having two video cards issue?

Now, the strange thing is: after a few initial issues one of the macs is doing fine. The second one, on the contrary, is a nightmare. Finalcut gives a green screen of death and hangs up suddenly while performing simple operations (like dropping a clip on the timeline).
I'm thinking of trying to replace the two video cards with an older single dual display card, and giving up the fancy lcd monitors (that i bought at vast cost), at least until apple issues an upgrade that adresses the two video card problem. <
If the machines are mechanically equal, it's obviously not the cards. Although you can only be absolutely certain if you swap the cards between machines and see if the green screen issue follows one or both cards.
However, that new LCD display and card combination doesn't have much time in the pipeline so there could be other issues and you're doing the beta testing for all of us. Blaming the reseller is pointless; no one can keep track of all of these issues. We only find out about them only because of reported failures.
You should research the "green screen" here on the forum. I do not recall if there are display or graphics cards issues associated with it. That seems unlikely. IIRC, it appears to be a QT issue.

  • Which new inkjet printer for my iMac early 2008?

I need a new inkjet printer for my iMac early 2008 (until now I use an old Epson Stylus Photo 1200 which now is going to its end of life).
Which printer would you choose, especially for photo prints?
    Thanks for your answers! :-)

I should have mentioned that I may have the same computer you have  - a late (December) 2007 iMac.  I continue to run 10.4.11 Tiger because of some antiquated software I use that is not compatible with later operating systems.  An additional thing I like about the Canon is its five individual ink tanks.  When one color runs out, I just change out that one cartridge and keep going.
