Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

My macbook is running slow after upgrading to yosemite
Other's have posted similar experiences by when I ran etrecheck I didn't get a bunch of fails and yet my computer is extremely sluggish since moving from snow leopard to Yosemite. So much so, that I'm considering going back. Programs load slowly and switching between programs has a delayed response. Reminds me of the PC I had before I bought my macbook in 2008.
Any ideas on what might be causing the slow down?

Imac 11,2 running slower after installing software updates
I purchased my imac 11,2 Sept. 2010. I recently downloaded my software updates that included airport utility, itunes and canon printer software update. Since these downloads, the imac has been very slow. Does anybody have any suggestions why my imac runs slower after software updates and what can be done to get my imac back to previous speed.
isis24680,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions? Do you have your eMac in display-only sleep overnight, or use a utility such as OnyX, or otherwise ensure the Unix crom maintenenace scripts run? OS X 10.4.2 (in 7/05) included provision to force the maintenance scripts when sufficiently oberdue; it's possible you're seeing the Mac trying to catch up on a year-plus worth of maintenance.
Do you have anything showing in System Preferences> Others, especially anything that adds to the menu bar? You'll need to check that any add-on system utilities or background programs are updated to run properly under 10.4.6; a quick way to check is to Start Up in Safe Mode and see if performance returns to normal.
Open Applications> Utilities> Activity Monitor, show all tasks, and sort the list by CPU. Is their anything regularly showing up at more than say 15% of the CPU usage? -
Computer runs slow after installation
Hi,
A little over a month ago I installed Tiger (using CDs) onto my iBook 10.1.5 OSX, 256MB, Power PC G3. A couple of times the computer ran slow at the start up but I would just re-start the computer and then it ran fine. This morning I turned it on I can't get it to stop running slow. Start up takes forever and any application I open takes a long time to start and runs slow after. What can I do to fix this?
Thank you,
MelissaYou have adequate free hard drive space but keep an eye on it.
But I do use quite a bit of memory on my itunes, about 5GB.
How did you determine this?
If you read the link I provided carefully, OS X makes automatic/dynamic use of Paging or Virtual Memory regardless the amount of RAM installed which uses available free hard drive space when utilized. This is released when logging out of your account and after a shutdown and/or a restart.
The less RAM you have installed, the more Paging or Virtual Memory will be used depending on the number of running applications at a time and what each application is performing. This can make the system feel and operate more slowly.
Check Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided. -

Imac running slow after installation of Mountain Lion 10.8.2
I purchased Mountain Lion OSX v.10.8.2 to access icloud. Since installing imac running slow, especially connecting to web sites.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
Note: I will respond ONLY to the original poster. -
IMac early 2008 ram problem after safe boot
Hi guys! I have an early 2008 iMac 2.4ghz with 4gb of ram. After some failed attempts to connect an external display through the mini-dvi to dvi adapter (including nvram resets and smc reset, with no success), i updated from ML 1.8.5 to mavericks 1.9.1 . Everything was fine, but here comes the problem. The system used somewhere around 500 to 700mb active memory at startup, and 300mb wired. I entered safe boot to check one more time if I can connect the external display, and in safe boot, the active memory at startup was 1.5gb. The problem I have is that the same ammount of ram is used now in normal boot (1.5gb), leaving me only 2gb free. I tried memory cleaner and it didn't help too much. Any suggestions for getting back the same ram usage before the safe boot (500mb vs. 1.5gb )? I really don't want to reinstall a clean OS if I can do anything about it.
Thank you very much,
Dan AvramThank you guys for your time! Yeap, it seems mavericks is handling ram in a different manner. Running the imac for 3 hours didn't help with the ram, unfortunately. I plan to do a clean reinstal of Mavericks, because I think some processes got stuck in the memory after the safe boot, because I see alot more processes now. I booted only with 2gb of ram, and at startup, 75% was full. So probably, after the nvram resets and the safe boots, something weird happened and the best solution would be a clean reinstall afterall.
One curios thing, 1 million page faults is ok? The number doesn't reset after restarts or shutdown, and I see 2 encrypted swaps aswell.
Thanks again and all the best,
Dan Avram -

29 KB Page-outsTry these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

Macbook Pro Early 2008 running slow, hot even with upgrades - what to do?
Hello!
Specs:
I have a Macbook Pro Early 2008 (Model A1260). I have upgraded both the RAM (from 2GB to 4GB DDR2 667) and the HDD (from the factory installed 200GB 5400 to a 750GB 5400).
Previous to this, I was running Leopard, and upgraded to Snow Leopard then Lion as my specs match the requirements. On the old/original HDD and RAM, All was good for about 3 months, and in the past month or two, I began to have performance issues, so after trying everything (including a clean wipe & reinstall using Lion Recovery) and doing a lot of reading in these forums and others, I decided/hoped the problem would be remedied with some upgrades (hence the new HDD & RAM upgrades).
This has helped to the point where I can now run safari without having to force reload or having the whole computer freeze (although that has now happened once), but I wasn't even able to load a youtube video.
CPU Usage:
I checked the activity monitor and I'm getting a pretty constant CPU usage of about 50% (even with no other apps running):
(The above is with just Safari, Dropbox, smcFanControl & Activity monitor)
My fans are engaged constantly (smcFanControl has my computer at 75º-80ºC at any given time that it's on).
The CPU usage & temps seems high - but I am not sure haven't found very good answers online.
Things I've Tried (Post RAM & HDD Upgrades):
I tried to perform a hardware test (holding D before the gray screen) - and both times I tried it, it did not work, as in Lion just loaded as normal.
Ran repair permissions - and some things were repaired.
Tried to run Verify Disk - no dice - the computer froze and I had to use the power button to shut it off & restart
Reset the SMC per apple support instructions - had no effect on the fans or heat (though I'm still not sure if this is a real problem or not!)
What I'm looking for :
Any ideas on what could be going on - is this just par for the course on older models running lion, or is there something more to be done?
I am really hoping to squeeze a few more years of service out of this machine! Thanks for any advice you can give me!Incase you are using your MBP like a laptop (which it is NOT)...................
According to the user manual it states in part:
"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."
MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
"Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn." -
IMac early 2008 getting slow. EtreCheck summary in french
Hello all,
I have tgis problem with my iMac for a while (I guess since I switched to OS X 10.9).
Some applications are getting slow opening and closing (Mail, Calendar, AddressBook, iPhoto, ...)
For example, active windows of Mail won't close immediately when I click onto the red button. I need to do it many times, switch to another app and back to Mail, and then try again. It is an erratic process. And this happens with other apps.
Rather frustrating.
Here under is the description of my problem in french (pretty much the same as I wrote here in english) and the picture of my iMac by Etrcheck.
If anyone can help, that would be great.
Thank you for your attention.
Description du problème :
Depuis assez longtemps maintenant, mon iMac ralentit.

From comparaison with previous check, it appears i recovered Hard Drive memory: from 58.53 to 107.86 Go.
I don't see the Safari item anymore. Nor the Bit Torrent stuff.
Mail seems to be more efficient. But when OS X reinstalled, Mail opened at first with re-load of all mails; i saw 23 569 mails total reloaded from SENT, to DRAFT, RECEIVED, etc ... for the last 10 years. Some of the mails have files included. Could be the problem for Mail being so slow. Even now when I open Mail it takes time to order properly all emails by date (and this is only for the INBOX display)
I don't know for the RAM. Kind of expensive and the result might not be as expected.
I still can't take screenshot with the keyboard shortcuts... something went wrong i don't know what. If someone has a clue I could then send shots of some of my windows to make sure I have things right.

Etrecheck – System Information -
I used to have Windows Vista, and the sound was perfect. I erased the partition with bootcamp and re-did it to install Win 7. I updated everythign after using the mac installation updates stuff first. Everythign works just fine, except the sound is very scratchy. I have found no way to fix this.
ALSO, I plugged in a logitech headset that I use all the time, and it says it connects, but no sound coming from it and the mic doesnt seem to work at all either. Normally when I plug it in, the iMac's sound turns off and the sound comes out of the headset, but now I plug it in and nothing changes.

Photoshop CS6 running slow after installation of Mac OS 10
Hi there,
I'm new to this forum and I hope that someone can help me with this. Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom worked just as they should until I stupidly decided to upgrade from Mountain Lion to Yosemite. Since then Photoshop CS6 is running terribly slow, not while opening files but while editing them. Shortcuts are not being accepted, I have to klick on the tool I want to use, not even cmd+z works reliable. Some tools like the spot healing brush are working absurd slow. It taks me about five times longer to edit.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
Thanks for any help!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
