Imac early 2009 firewire 800 port voltage ???

Hi all,
Have several Imac intel core duo's 2.66ghz SN: VM933RUD0TH or early 2009
Having searched and searched and searched for the voltage output for the firewire 800 connector. I cannot find any information at all.
The Apple official Tech Spec tells me that it is 7 watts but does not give me any amp rating at buss level, so am unable to calculate without having to do a manual test..
All other sites tell me that standard 800 fw output should be somewhere between 24 volts>30 volts
We have a 20k piece of kit that needs 12v supply through firewire and it keeps chugging and dying when it is connected to the Imac so am thinking that it isne supplying a full standard current and Apple are cleverly disguising it with 7watt on the tech spec.

yes this is the problem I am finding, phase one offers a repeater that can multiply the length of cable from 5m to 10m (yippee) @ an additional cost of £800 (second yippee).
Was trying to find one from alt company but the techy info seems to be a bit thin on the ground from companies that provide this and the prices seem to be skyward - so purchasing them to test the devices becomes prohibitive.
Phase's work around for laptops + low volt supply is as follows:
The p30+ and upwards have the ability to force battery power, so that when shooting tethered it pushes additional volts+amps down the line. Once again this is restricted to a 4.5m cable which when shooting tethered is a pain in the proverbial, also eats batt power (additional batts cost £60 each)
And if you get the configuration wrong in the menu (as our multiple user environment has evidenced) it it kills the batts and the camera..... (we just sent it off for repair hence these posts and research into it)
I just think that it is a bit of a pain when working with two pieces of kit, which allegedly use universal and standard connections to find that the universality and the standardization is not really there.
(new I should have gone for a HBlad)

  • Daisy chaining external hard drives and a video camera from a single firewire 800 port on my imac

I have only a single firewire 800 port on my imac and want to know if I can daisy chain two external hard drives and my video camera, please? If not is there another solution using USB 2?

Are the external HDs self powered or powered by the FW port?  If they are self powered there should not be a problem. If they are port powered they may put a strain on the port's power output but I'n not positive on that.

  • New imac has only one firewire 800 port?

Is there a hub or repeater you can use instead of daisy chaining. Can't figure out why my old imac has two firewire ports and the new imac has one. How are others managing multiple hard drives? I wish to use a hub for my firewire connections. What is the best way. thanks

You can locate Firewire hubs however they are expensive. I have had 3 Firewire 800 external HD's daisy chained together for 3 years that work flawlessly. The drives I have come with 2 FW 800 ports so this is quite easy, there are several top quality external HD's that are similar including:
    OWC Mercury Pro line
Lacie Quadra D2 line (this is what i have)
    G-Tech G series line
All of these drives have similar specifications and are all high quality products. I think you will find them to be the most recommended on these forums.
BTW your old iMac had 1 Firewire port and 1 Firewire 800 port not 2 firewire ports.

  • IMac 21.5",3.2 ghz i3. has dead firewire 800 port.

Like it says firewire 800 port does not work. I plug in a known good ext HD. With known good cable. Power light on HD comes on & I can hear it spinning
but it never mounts to desktop. Doesn't show up in Disk utilities either. HD mounts fine if I use usb port. I know FW 800 port on HD & cable are both good
because they work fine on friends 27" iMac. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions. I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you in advance
    HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I have tryed that. I've also tryed resetting the SMC, & the PRAM. Thank you for the suggestion.
From what I've been reading on this site, it sounds like I don't have any choice but to bring the
iMac into the service center. I am glad I got Apple care. Otherwise I would be screwed. My iMac is just over 1 year old. Once again Thanx for your time & help. Appreciate it. Have a Great Day

  • 24" iMac early 2009 - how to duplicate screen (mini DP to HDMI)?

    Hello
I want to play movies on my TV which are located on this harddrive.
I have a PS3 so when i have software streaming that movies (uPnP style) to my PS3 it works. But then again, considering I like nature and all, I have to use 3 devices for getting that image through.
It would be far easier to just connect the mac to my TV using HDMI.
I know this is possible with a mini DP to HDMI cable. But does this iMac (early 2009) support audio streaming? I've read numerous of forums and they all have different answers. I know this forum is the right one to ask.
But if it doesn't support audio, then i'll need a devide which combines the mini DP and audio jack into a a hdmi output. This isn't such a problem I think except ...
If this audio jack is plugged in my iMac, won't I'll always loose the sound of my iMac (but I'll have that on my TV)? This bother me because I don't want to insert the audio jack every time I want to play a movie on my TV. But when the HDMI side is not connected to my TV, will my Imac still loose its audio?
It seems complex, but I just need a solution for watching those movies easily on my telly without having to switch cables all the time (and not use the PS3 which consumes power like a mad machine).
I'd like to know your input on this.
    Thanks in advanced

The mini-DisplayPort does not carry audio. You can solve that issue with a device such as this one available in the USA. I do not know where you would find one in Europe.
However, as long as something is plugged into the Mac's audio port, that is normally where the audio goes. So if your TV is plugged into the audio port and the TV is off, your Mac will be silent.

  • How can a video editor use an NTSC studio monitor on the new iMac without a Firewire 400 port?

Looking at the new iMacs (hungrily) and wondering how I will be able to continue using my Sony DSR-11 and NTSC monitor in the absence of any Firewire 400 port.  I suppose there may be cables that will allow me to use the Firewire 800 port and am thinking they may be difficult to locate.

No they're not - they're available from many sources; i.e. I bought a FW 400 > 800 cable when I bought my iMac last August (at an authorized local reseller). Just google Firewire 400 > 800 and you'll get plenty of results. You can also opt for an adapter if you prefer. Both are also available at the Apple store online.

  • Is there a way to test the Firewire 800 port?

My firewire 800 port seems to no longer work on my Imac. Before bringing the machine to repair, I was wondering if there is any way to test the port, or to reset it. I remember I had a similar issue a few years ago and I could make it work again.
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi Felix
    1. Try resetting the FireWire bus as described in the +What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device+ article below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317?viewlocale=en_US
    2. Connect a FireWire device and open your *System Profiler,* then in the Hardware section select FireWire to see if the device is shown on the bus.

  • Kernel panic - iMac Early 2009 - OS 10.9.5

My iMac Early 2009 computer has been shutting down in different ways during different programs, usually graphics oriented.  Usually it freezes the display or some part of the display, becomes very very slow and then maybe I can wait and save work before restarting, maybe not--it's just frozen.  I was watching a video in Chrome just now and it completely shut down and restarted.  This is the first time this has happened--complete shut down.  I wonder if anyone can interpret the shut down log.
    Specs are as follows:
    iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch Aluminum (Early 2009) (E8435)
6 MB shared level 2 cache
    1066 MHz system bus
    8GB of RAM (1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM)
    1 TB (7200 RPM)
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 graphics - 512 MB GDDR3
Log of the shut down follows.  Thank you very much in advance if anyone has any idea what is wrong.

Thanks Mike.  I have no third party peripherals, but I did install ram, so I'll take that out.  I'm unable to install the Apple Hardware Test (holding D down doesn't work for me and I don't have the install disks that came with the computer anymore.)  I think it is a hardware problem though, due to it happening during lots of different programs running etc.  I'm guessing it is GPU related as well, because it says

From research I've done online, I gather replacing the video card will be half as expensive as buying a new computer, so I'm in a jam there.  The iMac screen display is also quite old  -- it has a yellowish color now and often  on the desktop you can "see through" windows "on top": you can see the outlines of windows below.

  • Broken FireWire-800 port?

    Hello,
I've bought a LaCie HDD with especially a FireWire-800 port because I use it to place movies on it and edit it with iMovie. Only when I connect the HDD with FW800 it does not show that it's connected on the iMac, with USB 2.0 it does show it, but that is too slow for me. First I thought it was a cable issue. And I even did an Apple Hardware Test which did not give a negative result. Then I took my HDD to test it on another iMac, there it did work. Does that mean my FireWire 800 port on my iMac is broken? What should I do now?

    Greetings,
Your testing does indeed indicate an issue with that port.
Reset the SMC and then test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Reset the PRAM and then test: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
If the issue persists after you follow the above steps, make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.
    Best of luck.

  • Firewire 800 Port back to life after power shutdown?

I experienced a strange event and would like to share it with you for feedback and comments.
During several days the external hard disk connected to the Firewire 800 port of my IMAC caused me increasingly problems, and eventually the disk would not mount at all on the desktop. I connected the disk to the FW800 port of my portable and the disk worked quite fine. I concluded that the FW800 port of the IMAC was damaged. I was preparing myself to contact Apple to get the IMAC repaired.
Then recently we had a general shutdown of power in our town, for several hours.
When the power came back, I had the idea to reconnect the external disk to the FW800 port, and miracle, the disk mounted immediately and has been working fine since.
Is is possible that the ports of the computer come back to life after a power shutdown? How is this possible?
Can I conclude that it is recommended to disconnect a computer from time to time, just to reset some parameters?

Yep, both USB and Firewire ports can get in into a "bad state" and only complete removal of power will reset those chip sets.
Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes powering the ports to do stuff like detect when a device is plugged in or wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac). Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now plug stuff back in & start up the Mac. Now see if your USB or Firewire ports work any better.
Even Apple acknowledges this occasional issue...
What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device

    Best of luck!

  • Will my US iMac early 2009 work in South Africa?

I am moving. I know that mobile and portable devices will work, but will a desktop? I do not see voltage guidance on the iMac casing.

Yes they are also 100-240V AC, see >  iMac (Early 2009) - Technical Specifications
However you may need to find a power cord with the correct plug end or a plug adapter depending on the outlet configuration there.

  • How to know if my firewire 800 port is bad

I have tried two different cables and cannot connect my Western Digital external hard drive to my imac with a firewire 800 cable.
My iMac will not recognize the Time Machine and no icon appears on the desktop.  The connection can be made using the USB
cables.  So, I believe that the port on either the external drive or the iMac is bad.  Is there a diagnostic test for the ports?
The connection has been working fine for a couple of years.  I shut down the system when on vacation and upon return
the connection could not be made.  I took everything to the Apple genius bar and when the genius hooked it up it all worked fine.
I came home and found it not to work.  I am assuming that one of the ports (ext. drive or iMac is defective.

Incidentally, I have a 400/800 adapter, so I could connect the 400 port to the 800 port
Don't do that... It might cause some short, and there is no diagnostic you can perform by connecting the Mac to itself.
And, yes, I checked the Firewire 2 x 400 cable I had been using, and it seems to be fine.
I don't know how you checked it, but if you did not try a different FireWire cable, you should do that as your test to see if the cable is the problem.
On the original discs that came with your iMac, there may be a hardware diagnostics utility.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????
