IMac ejects CDs & Software Discs, only reads DVDs

Hello. I am not very good at working with computers, so sorry if I forget to add things. I was given a used one of these:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
It automatically ejects CDs, software discs, etc. The only type of disk it reads are DVDs, and at times, it still ejects them. How can I repair this? I do not have applecare since this is a second hand computer. Would it be very expensive to replace the optical drive? Do I need a new one? Can I run an external dvd/cd drive to just avoid this? Is the drive just dirty?
Please help.

Thanks to a very helpful Apple Genius Bar expert, I have just saved over £100. After reading this forum I tried everything suggested to get my superdrive to accept my DVDs and to get my iDVD to produce a slideshow. After two weeks of frustration I took the whole iMac to the shopping mall. The genius reached into the counter draw and held a can of compressed air. After a minute of squirting the air into the dvd slot all my prayers had been answered. He told me that cleaning the drive like this work on about a third of all his clients. I have now bought a can of compressed air from Amazon for £4 and have it ready for the next problem the arises. (I have tried the same technique on the unruly kids, but it does not seem to work on them!)

  • IMac G4 superdrive only reads DVDs after install, not CDs-- HELP

I just installed leopard on my iMac G4 and now it only reads DVDs. It will not read CDs. I tried installing iLife and Office from CDs and it does not read them. However, it will play all DVDs just fine. Leopard itself seems to work amazing, only problem so far is the CD issue.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to be able to read CDs as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

ok... so I unplugged it for a couple minutes. Then, booted it back up holding commandoption+pr to refresh the PRAM. This seemed to work when the CD is in the drive. It will read whatever CD is in the Drive. But, if I eject it and then try to reinsert it, it doesn't work anymore. I don't know what is wrong. Do you think that the battery needs to be replaced or something? Can anyone help me?????
    Thanks

Same thing here. Superdrive keeps behaving erratically since Leopard upgrade. Doesn't burn DVDs (some error message saying it doesn't recognize the media). Managed to burn a CD only after full PMU reset but doesn't read CDs anymore (burnt a blank CD on a iMac at work and my mini says the CD is blank). Reads movie rental DVDs ok though (but I don't care, I just want it to work).
Same sort of thing happened to me last year whilst running Tiger. Apple changed the Superdrive. That very model of Superdrive is a piece of rubbish and it looks like Apple will have to change it again. Very glad I tool the 3-year Applecare warranty.
So much for the "it just works", hey?.

It's probable that the CD 'side' of the combo drive has failed.  That you cannot boot from the recovery CD is pretty much proof of the failure.

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).
This utility can remove the filters for you:

My CD drive on my macbook doesn't read CDs anymore.  It only reads DVDs.  How can I get it to read CDs again?

Is it readable in a Windows computer?  If not then you can try Disk Utility to repair the drive-- although that may be dangerous too.
I haven't had this problem so I out of safe ideas.  There are ustilies out there.   I used the seach term "repair flash drive Mac OS X" to locate some of these.
If the data is essential there are pay-for services to recover data looked the price was in the range $50 - $1000
    All the best.

  • MacBook will not mount CDs but will mount & read DVDs

This MacBook is used mainly for surfing, email and word processing. Very few other programs are installed and/or used. Recently it stopped mounting and reading CD's. It continues to mount & read DVD's. When I insert a CD (commercial or home burned) the drives sounds like it is trying to read it and then after awhile it ejects the CD. I have other Macs & PC's which can read the rejected CDs.
All software is up-to-date and disk permissions are in good shape. AppleCare had me reset the PRAM. Would appreciate any other steps I can try to fix the situation. In several weeks, I will be traveling to a city with an authorized Apple repair unit where I can have the computer looked at. I'd rather fix it myself if possible

If your computer is covered by warranty or extended Applecare they will probably replace the drive.
In many cases, though, these sorts of problems can be simply overcome using a drive cleaning disc.
Certainly worth a try if you are out of warranty (Apple have said that they don't like cleaning discs in the past so you may not want to use one if you are still under warranty etc. I have personally used cleaning discs for many years in Apple slot load drives without the slightest problem however, and they have instantly "fixed" drives that would otherwise seem to be beyond redemption!).
    Cheers

  • Why can't my iMac see contents of discs or burn DVDs?

Contents of DVDs don't appear and I cannot burn DVDs.
About two months ago I became unable to burn a DVD.
One month ago I became unable to see the contents of DVDs, though my iMac can recognize and read an audio CD..
I've tried accessing information from commercial as well as Sony DVD-R 16X discs made by a friend using his iMac—to see if my friend's discs were blank, we opened them in his iMac and found all the programs; I tried again on my iMac and still can't see any content.
I have repaired permissions using Disc Utility, but the problems were not solved.
Discs appear on the desktop as "Untitled DVD".  When I open "Disc Utility", the discs themselves do not show up, and the image for "SuperDrive" seems greyed out; still, when I select "SuperDrive" I can get "Info" and instructions for erasing a disk.
I was advised to open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new administrative account, then log out & into the new account; but the problems were not solved.

    Hi Babowa,
I inserted my friend's DVD (proven to have content), saw the iMac could see no content, then went to: Apple > about this Mac > more info > System Report > Disc Burning and got the report below which says the disc is blank:
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H:

      Overwritable:          Yes
      Appendable:          Yes

Twice I inserted a commercial DVD and it was automatically ejected both times.

    Hi Nancy
Open the System Preferences for CDs & DVDs and check to make sure that the When's are set to:
When you insert a blank CD: Ask what to do
When you insert a blank DVD: Ask what to do
When you insert a music CD: Open iTunes
When you insert a picture CD: Open iPhoto +(or other photo app.)+
When you insert a Video DVD: Open DVD Player

  • Combo drive only reads DVDs and burned discs!

OK, so I had to wipe my harddrive and reinstall (restore) OSX 10.3 Panther.
After doing that the Combo drive does not mount any "factory" CD's.
It can mount the CD's I burned before the reinstall. It can mount DVD movies, but all program CD's & DVD's do not mount.
I have an external firewire DVD burner that mounts all these discs so the discs are not the problem.
The combo drive can read some CDs and DVDs so the optics are not shot, but the system decides not to mount!

You may want to try resetting the PMU. I had this exact same problem once where my '12 PowerBook G4 wouldn't recognize my iLife '05 DVD-ROM. Resetting the PMU caused it to be able to mount the DVD-ROM again. Here's a link to the Apple Knowledge Base Article with instructions for how to reset the PMU: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449.

  • Cd/dvd rom reads cds but won't read dvds

I have a pbG4 titanium (M5884) with a MATSHITADVD-ROM (SR-8187) and am running 10.3.9. I can play cds fine, but when I attempt to insert a dvd, sometimes I hear something and it spits the dvd back out. Other times, it just holds the dvd and doesn't mount on my desktop. Is there any update that I need to install? I am trying to upgrade to 10.4 but my upgrade is on a dvd. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi,
It could mean your drive has come to the end of the rainbow and needs to be replaced. However, you could try running a DVD cleaning disc in the drive.
Is it only the install disc that won't mount? Have you tried a movie DVD? Check the install DVD to see if it is dirty or scratched.

  • Imac 10.4.11 won't read dvd-r....

that were recorded on dvd recorder . older dvd recorder..panasonic... one of first available..about 5 years ago. discs vary, many are fuji and tdk. speeds vary. but they're DEFINITELY dvd-r's, which i thought was the native system on the imac. why won't they play. i get a message that a blank disc has been inserted

first, thanks ever so much for taking the time to respond and try to help me on this matter. yes, they were finalised when they were burned on the dvd recorder (this is a "component type" dvd recorder made about 4 years ago by panasonic before all computers came with a dvd burner). they play in the dvd player they were recorded in (the machine was one which transferred vhs's to dvd) and an older windows machine. as far as format, i not sure of the meaning of format here----they weren't made on any pc, just a dedicated appx 5 year old panasonic dvd vhs--dvd recorder. thanks again for your time and attention

  • I bought a used PowerMacPC G5. I can burn and read DVDs, but I can't read or burn CDs. The CDs are not even recognized. After the drive searches for a while, the CD is ejected without any error messages. The CDs work okay on my iMac.

I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?
