Imac emits 2 quiet beeps  NOT at Startup

So my Imac is running just fine as normal but every now and again it emits a quiet 'beep-beep.'
Have checked the console and nothing's showing up around the time of the beeps so I really haven't a clue what it is.
Any ideas?
Regards,
Mike

The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep = no RAM installed

2 beeps = incompatible RAM types

3 beeps = no good banks

4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)

5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.

  • Loud beeps NOT during startup...

In the past few weeks I have experienced 3-4 times where my computer would suddenly lock up and repeatedly emit a series of three LOUD beeps.  I need to hold down the power button in order to shut the computer off.  After restart, Safari seems to hang.  If I close a couple tabs, the problem disappears.  In looking at the logs, it appears it may be related to "WebProcess"?  Has anybody else experienced this, know possible reasons or solutions?
27" 2010 iMac with 12GB RAM running OSX Lion

I experienced the same issue: my 21" iMac 3.6 GHz i5 with 8GB RAM and Mac OS X 10.7.1 freezes (only when I'm using Adobe Flash, either CS3 or CS5) and emits a sequence of three loud beeps, repeatedly.  The cursor does not move on the screen, and the iMac must be forced to power down and restart.  Here is a sound recording of the beeps:
    http://macboy.com/mac-three-beeps.mp3
I ran the disk diagonstic tool that came on the Installation DVD, but it did not turn up any memory issues or logic board problems, even in extended diagnosis mode.
The freeze problem has been happening occasionally, but usually without the beeps.  Instead it had been a cacaphony of random loud digital crunchy bit sounds.

  • Very loud beep (not at startup)

I was working on my iMac today, and all of a sudden, it made a loud beep. This was so loud everyone in the room nearly jumped out of their skin. This is not like the tone you hear when making a firmware update, it's something completely different. It was more of a buzzing sound than a clear tone, and it happened after the machine had been on a few hours. Everything seems to be fine, but I really want to know what that was all about. Has anyone encountered this?

Thanks. I can see where I rebooted, which I assume is where it says "Shutdown NOW!" (sounds a little too urgent for a voluntary shutdown). Some stuff happened with Google Chrome and Photoshop (weird, since I was using InDesign at the time). A quick Google search reveals that exit code 1 is generic and doesn't really tell you anything. I don't know what "headlights" is. So it seems like it could be Chrome or something Adobe, but I'm not sure what to make of this so it's not all that helpful.

  • Mac Mini Erratic Beeping NOT On Startup

Over the past couple weeks my Mac Mini has ominously beeped on 4 occassions. The first and second times it was one short beep. The third time it was three short beeps. And today it went kind of nuts; the beeping was irregular, patternless, and didn't stop on its own. On every single occasion I've had my ministack external HD on and iTunes running (music library is on the HD). When today's irregular beepfest occurred, I quickly quit iTunes and the beeping stopped immediately. I have noticed that my system lags somewhat when I run iTunes, and the last two occurrences of beeping have happened when the system seemed particularly busy (fans were going full blast). I've read that beeping commonly indicates RAM problems, but I've had no issues upon startup, and as soon as the beeping stops everything seems normal, with no obvious RAM-related symptoms.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    -David

Mac minis beeping is only an indicator or a RAM issue if it happens at startup and is a recognizable pattern of one, two or three beeps separated by a brief silence. If you don't get that indication, it means that your system RAM is OK. If it were not, for instance if there were problems due to a memory stick overheating, you would see system crashes, and likely kernel panics.
I wonder if the beeping you hear is associated with the system alert sound - the sound the system makes to identify an error or problem, in which case what you are more likely to be suffering is a software or MacOS issue.
Next time this happens, note the time (shown in the menu bar) and try looking in the Console (in Applications>Utilities) to see if there are any log entries which match the time. If so, those log entries are likely to provide some guidance as to what is going on.

    Hey terremo,
Thanks for the question. From the information you provided, it sounds like the iMac is successfully turning on, however video is not displayed. These symptoms can usually be isolated further by the troubleshooting steps in this article:

  • Low Beeping Mac--NOT at startup

I have a MacBook Pro, bought it back in 2010.
I've been travelling a lot in the last month, but have never dropped my computer or left it out of sight. I installed Java a few days ago while in China and am now in Malaysia. While I did notice the trackpad not working as well, nothing seemed wrong with my laptop.
Yesterday, it started to make low beeps, somewhat like a piano key being played. It occurred sporadically, sometimes playing 3 beeps in a row, pausing, then playing two more. Or a single beep would play, while other times about six beeps would go off.
The noise can be adjusted with my volume. I've shut down every app and still the beeps continued. I've turned off my laptop twice (no beeping occurred at startup), but they still continue to play today. I've run diagnostic tests and have never installed new RAM. The disk is not full and still has almost 100GB free.
    Can anyone help?

Three beeps at startup means you have either bad RAM or bad memory slots. Reseat RAM or change RAM module could solve the problem.
Before that, you'd better run Hardware Test to consider which or both RAM module is/are bad.

  • IMac DV G3 400MHz will not boot with OS8.6 or 9.2.2 CD-ROMs

Here is the situation: I have burned copies of the install disks for OS 8.6 and OS 9.2.2 that I wish to install onto our iMac DV. I insert them into the computer while running OS X and it reads it correctly. However, when I attempt to boot from the CD, it skips it and starts booting from the hard drive.
When I am in OS X, I check the Startup Disk preference, and I set it to the CD-ROM, which it detects as containing a system folder. Then when I reboot, it continues to skip the CD and go right to the hard drive.
When the hard drive is formatted and does not contain an OS, and it only has the CD-ROM inside, it gives the Missing System Folder icon upon boot.
The machine has Firmware 4.1.9 and works well in OS X. It is currently formatted with five partitions on a 10GB hard drive, all formatted as Mac OS Extended. All partitions have the OS 9 drivers within. It has a 400MHz G3 with 256MB RAM.
    Any thoughts?

While I am working on acquiring a pressed version of OS 9.0 and OS 8.6, I have additional information for you: I am able to boot and install from burned media for OS 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 on this machine (which is an Orange iMac DV per the above note about the SE version). This tells me the machine can boot from burned media, but not into those OSes.
Another interesting fact: on a hunch, I copied the System Folder from the OS 9 install disk to the root of one of the hard drive's partitions, and then switched the Startup preference to that folder and tried it. It booted far enough into OS 9 to give me a happy Mac icon, then show the Mac OS 9.0 logo, but then popped up a message saying that the media was only able to boot from a removable drive, and that I would have to restart. Predictable, to be sure, but it shows the machine is at least capable of booting to OS9 somehow...

  • HT1455 I tried to install windows 7 on my imac but the computer was not booting again what shall I do?

I was installing windows 7 on my imac but the installation was not completed and now I cannot boot what shall I do?

Provided you used BootCamp to do the installation, with your machine off, press and hold down the "Option" key while turning it on.  Hold the key down until you get the screen where you can select which OS to boot into.  Select OS X (you'll need to physically click the button here... tapping won't work if you have it enabled).  Once in OS X, go into System Preferences and Startup Disk.  This is where you set the default OS to boot into.  Change it to OS X.  Relaunch BootCamp Assistant to remove the failed installation of Windows.  You can try again if you wish.

  • Why does my OS X 10.6.8 have various applications hang for several minutes, then resume. This is not a startup problem.

I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.8 a few weeks ago. It seemed to be running OK, so we upgraded another system also. Now both machine are, from time to time, stalling whatever application is running. Everything stops or runs veeeeeeerrrrrry slowly for several minutes even including bringing other windows to the front. The disk runs almost like it is swapping a lot. Then the system frees up and runs normally for a while. This is not a startup problem. I occurrs on systems that have been running for a day or two or more. It happens on an iMac and on a MacBookPro. Neither of them had this behavior before the 10.6.8 upgrade.

What do you mean with corrupt?
Why did you suggest that I created a new profile?
There are cache files and other system files that are created every time a user account is created.  Sometimes these are corrupted in the OS and it really has no bearing on the specific application but it can lead to erratic behavior.  Creating a new user recreates all these system files and thus it's almost like starting fresh.  It's one step shy of re-installation of an OS.  So because changing the user fixed the issue, then we have eliminated the fact that the application is causing the error and we know the OS is causing the error.
I can't just go in to that profile when I want to use?
I wouldn't recommend it.  This can lead to more problems with the OS down the road with other applications and depending on where the corruption lies it can lead to issues with OS upgrades or even installing new software.  The files that are typically most critical to users are stored in the Applications folder or the Documents/Sites/Pictures folders.  You can easily drag them over to a new user account.  If you have email being backed up for a product like Thunderbird you can also bring over many of the Library items as well.

  • Mac Air is dark and emits three short beeps/three long beeps/three short beeps ("SOS"). What does this mean?

Mac Air was left on power attached to a monitor overnight. In the morning there was a message that I had to turn it off by depressing the "on" key for over then seconds. I did this and it would not turn off. It is now emitting three short beeps followed by three long and three shorts ("SOS" in morse code). What does this mean?

If what I read is correct, you will need to take your MBA to Apple to have its firmware restored.
I cannot explain why this happened.

I've just found out the reason for this behaviour. I am syncing from a computer which is different to the one I first synced with. iTunes can't cope with this situation so deletes anything synced from another source.
