IMac Ethernet: Cable YES but DSL NO, any help?

Looking for help on internet connection problems with new iMac. I've posted this issue under a topic that is now marked as solved, however I do not see the solution.
I have a new 17" iMac intel. It hasn't been opened so it has the 512 MB RAM it came with, no other alterations, only added one application that's required for the business where this will operate.
I was able to easily and successfully connect to the internet using a high-speed cable modem (Rogers in Canada).
The computer is being used in a location where cable is not an option, so high speed DSL (Bell Canada) was chosen. I have not been able to successfully connect to the internet with this service.
Here's the steps taken:
1. Hooked up Speedstream 5200 modem as directed, followed set-up steps for TCP/IP as directed. Tried to connect. Connection times out, says there is no connection. When the system or modem is rebooted the lights on the modem suggest everything is working fine, according to the manual. There is also a green 'light' next to Built-in Ethernet in Network Preferences. This 'light' only goes red after trying to connect, and the ENET light also goes out on the Modem.
2. Spent a fair amount of time on the phone with Bell. Tried connecting using PPPoE without success. Tried to "configure the modem" by connecting to 192.168.2.1 but could not. Tried connecting without a splitter, made sure that phones on the line had the filter applied, all the standard issue steps from Bell. They could only suggest it was a Mac hardware problem. They were not swayed by the fact that I could easily connect using cable modem. Their Mac support is minimal at best.
3. I've tried deleting the Built-in Ethernet as suggested elsewhere so it is 'rebuilt'. I've installed 10.4.6 Combo update (twice) and it hasn't helped. I've pinged 127.0.0.1 (as suggested elsewhere) without packet loss which I've read likely suggests it isn't the systems ethernet port.
I've not applied the recent firmware update as I don't want to use windoze on this machine, but will apply it if it'll help in some way.
Can anyone suggest the next step. Am I missing something here? I've been troubleshooting through various forums looking at my options, thus some of the steps above. All the usual maintenance steps are taken (repair permissions, remove other devices, etc.).
I've been able to successfully set up the internet on many a Mac system since OS 7, but I'm no networking genius, things just worked as they were supposed to.
Any hints, tips, resources, links or direction would be helpful.

are you getting an ip when set to using dhcp? if you are supposed to configure your modem using dhcp, make sure the "connect using pppoe" option on the pppoe tab is unchecked (make sure you have "show" set to built in ethernet) you should be able to type in the gateway ip address listed into a web browser to access the setup screen. then go from there. if you dont see one you might try clicking the renew dhcp lease button. if still nothing you might reset the modem (usually hold the reset button until lights flash) then check again
on the other hand if your isp has the modem setup in "bridged mode" there may be no ip to access, then your stuck trying to use the macs pppoe client to connect to the isp thru the virtual pipe thats supposed to be there.

    Have you set both to never sleep?
    Is the source (old) Mac's software up to date (including the Migration Assistant for Mac OS X Snow Leopard update)?
    Is the old Mac healthy?  Have you run Verify Disk on it lately?
    The estimates are wildly inaccurate under the best of circumstances.  How long has it been stuck?

    Try cleaning the disc, and be sure you have the right one.
    If that doesn't help, it sounds like it's time for a trip to the Apple Store.

    The  Powerline adapters mentioned by edex67 are your only hope if you cannot run an Ethernet cable.
    Even if the home and office are on the same electrical circuit, you won't really know how well the Powerline adapters might work until you actually try them out at your location.
    For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.

  • Bluberry iMac Ethernet Cable Not Plugged in???

    I am trying to connect a slot loading 350 mhz imac to the internet through the built-in ethernet for a friend that needs it, but the network status pane (OSX.3 Panther) keeps saying the ethernet cable is not plugged in. I've tried several different Cat 5 ethernet cables and it still says this, so we can't connect to the isp (with cable modem). It also says the internal modem is not working, I get the red light next to it and the built-in ethernet buttons in Network status. I've tried direct connections to two different external cable modems, and three different ethernet cables, but I think the problem is a software issue that needs correcting.
    I've tried zapping the PRAM, and resetting the nv-ram, but to no avail (as suggested by other posts I've come across). I ran Tech Tool 4 on it and the Network test PASSED.
    Is there something I can do in Preferences or terminal to switch these back on so the network can see the modem and built-in ethernet? Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome!!

    Thanks for the reply. The router seems to be working, since when I connect it to my laptop (old iBook) via ethernet cable, no problems getting internet.
    I also read that to test the card and/or cable I should connect the 2 computers together and turn on file sharing. I did this and was not able to share files. I don't know if that points to the ethernet card/cable or to incompetence on my part...
    But I also tried file sharing via Airport card and that worked fine, so I think I have file sharing set up properly.

    Have you contacted your cell/mobile provider? Since you can connect via WiFi, the next place to look is your carrier's network.

    Plug your device into the original charger & block in a wall outlet and leave it alone for a couple of hours. Then, while it is still plugged in, restart it by holding down the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple, then let go.

    I have a late 2007 17" MBP, so I am familiar with your model. I might also add that my original Fujitsu hard drive started to go south right after my Applecare expired, so if you still have the original drive, it could possibly be on its way out. To get a more comprehensive check of the physical health of your hard drive, you might want to download and run SMART Utility:

    You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
    Also, how full is your hard drive? If less than 10% free space, it is too full. 15%-20% free space is better.
    You might try a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    Safe Boot disables quite a few things, one of which is start up items. If things seem OK in Safe Mode, you could probably go ahead and add a new account for troubleshooting. If the new account has no problems, then you have something wrong in your usual user account.
    You can also look at what safe Mode disables to get a clue as to what might be causing your problems.

  • Printer won't work with Ethernet cable connected to AEBS

    I've been using my AEBS with built-in modem for a year with no problems. Today I got a DSL modem (finally available in my area) and when I connected the ethernet cable from the DSL modem to my AEBS, my printer stopped working. It now gives the following error message: "Printing Problem - the process "mdns" stopped unexpectedly with status 1". The printer is still available from the printer setup utility and I tried deleting and reinstalling the printer
    I have tried several different variations of restarting the modem and AE in various orders, but no joy. However, when I disconnect the ethernet cable from the AE and restart it, I can print fine.
    I have three computers on the network (G4 MDD PowerMac, G5 iMac, and C2D MPB) and I get the same error message from all three.
    Any suggestions (perhaps an interpretive dance to the network gods?) on how to get both the DSL and printer to play nice at the same time??

    I've just got TC to act just as a hard drive for my PowerBook(its got all the latest softwear)
    It seams like all the setup details are in relation to a wireless net works. I don't want it to have anything to do with my wireless net work, that sounds like a accident waiting to happen.
    All I want to do is copy my Itunes library on to it via a ethernet cable. I was assured I would be able to do this very easily at the Apple store, well after they stopped trying to sell me a new computer that is.
    Any advise would be greatly appreciated, as it just sate there with a flashing amber light on it now.

    I also have my time capsule connected via ethernet cable to my i-Mac the ethernet cable from my dsl modem goes into the WAN port. The gurus on the site may correct me but I don't think that you will ever get a green light unless your internet is plugged into the WAN port. Even with the flashing amber light the time capsule should function as a backup drive if everything else is setup right.
