IMac + ethernet switch + windows laptop

I'm trying to use my windows laptop and my imac on the same ethernet switch. This was working, but now I've added a network connected printer.
The printer and the iMac are working fine, but my Dell laptop keeps losing its ability to connect to the network. Dell says to restart the cable modem so it gets a new IP address. Well, doing this once is OK, but this seems to need to happen all the time.
Please confirm, using these 3 devices on an ethernet switch should be fine right?

Tell me more please? What are you referring to as an ethernet switch? Is this a router, an ethernet hub? Is this connected to your modem? What is the printer connected to, the switch or a computer?

I have just purchased an iMac for home - am I able to network an iMac with a windows laptop?

It sounds really unlikely though... You have to type in your password twice when setting up so you either:
    made the same typo twice
    the caps lock was on
You held down SHIFT during one of the letters
the keys have relocated because of different language keyboard layout
you simply forgot exactly what you typed.
Are you aware that passwords are case-sensetive? also, when using punctuation in passwords be aware that language localization of the keyboard can cause relocation of certain symbols like $ and € and * and ' which may make it impossible to retype the password correctly, if you are unaware of the correct way to type a certain puntuation symbol.

  • Moving iTunes library from an iMac to a Windows Laptop running Windows 7

    Hi All
My daughter has a problem. She is selling her iMac and has to move her music library of 3,000 tunes from her iMac to her Windows 7 laptop. She does not have either her iPhone or iPod any more. How does she do this.
    Please help.
    Regards
    Lee

+When I moved my iTune files to my Windows 7 laptop, it worked first time.+
Well, if it worked the first time, your library must have been nicely consolidated into the itunes media folder.
The file structure between Mac and WIndows is completely different. iTunes can't make sense of the Mac file paths in the itl database. However, it should revert to looking for everything in the itunes media folder location, if your daughter's PC has that itunes preference turned on.
If it's already enabled, turn it off, save the changes, and then turn it back on.
If all the items are in that itunes media folder, there shoudl be an "Organizing files" message while it looks for them again. If they are not in the media folder, it won't find them.

  • Why can't my new iMac find my windows laptop?

Followed all the instructions but cannot get a connection between new iMac and a similar spec Windows 7 laptop.  Not a good start to my Imac experience but I'll blame the other machine for the moment.

Both or at least one of them should be allowed to be shared. On your mac, go into System Preferences > Sharing and see if File Sharing (at least this one) is checked.
Which instructions is a good question, of course. Instructions to what? The router, the PC, the iMac?

  • IMac connects but windows laptops stopped connecting

[This ismy first post, sorry if i don't have the rules and/or etiquette down...]
    My setup is:
    - Airport Extreme hooked up to DSL speedstream modem with SBC
    - Win XP laptop w/built in wifi
    - Win ME laptop w/wifi card (aerolan/asante)
    - iMac G4
    - Airport Express (to extend the range of my extreme)
Sorry this is a long story...my network was working fine but my Win XP laptop has had flakey wifi problems so one day i tried to connect my DSL modem directly into the laptop. This actually made my DSL connection to stop working. A tech support call and some new settings fixed that problem, but then my airport extreme wouldn't work. Here's the scoop:
    - I thought I was supposed to hook the DSL modem to the WAN port (circle of dots), but i kept getting a "no ppoe server has been found for the specified service" error.
    - When i hook it up the the LAN port (arrow), though, i can get an internet connection from my iMac (??), but neither of my laptops can connect. My XP can see my home network but can't connect to it. At one point i was able to actually connect to the network (when I plugged in my airport express, and at that time there was a different base stn id in my internet connect app), but could not establish an internet connection (browser failed). My wife's Win ME sees a network and my base station id from the Internet Connect window shows up in the wifi network dialog, which i think means it is talking to the base station, but again, can't get to the internet through my browser or mail app.
One odd piece of the puzzle is that I can't get the base station to appear in the Select Base Station menu in the Airport Admin Utility. I saw it at one point i think when i had it hooked up with the WAN port. Finally, i don't know if this matters but i noticed my base station ID in the Internet Connect app is different than my Airport ID in the Network Airport panel. I was wondering if it got stuck on my Airport Express, but i can't get that to show up in my airport admin utility either. I tried to get the second base stn id to show up in the internet connect app but now it seems to stick on the Extreme ID.
I've tried a soft reset and also powering off everything for five minutes, but that doesn't seem to help. In some screen i saw the IP address (10.64.64.64). I tried clicking "other" and entering the password "public" (i googled somewhere that that was the default, though it's possible i entered a password and forgot it).
    Can anyone help...???

I just wanted to clarify that when i said hooked "it" up to the LAN port i meant that I hooked up my DSL modem to the LAN port (which, again, seems wrong to me...) but doing this was able to wirelessly establish an internet connection on my G4 via the Airport.

  • Help, I cannot connect to the internet via airport with either my Imac or I-Pad.  Connecting via ethernet works okay for Imac.  I can connect wirelesssly with my windows laptop.  I have reset my router, created a new network. It was all okay on Monday

Normally I have my IMac, I-Pad and Windows Laptop all working on my home network via wi-fi. This week I find that I cannot access the inetrnet on my IMac or I-pad via wi-fi but I can connect to the internet via wi-fi with my windows based laptop.
The airport diagnostics (reds/yellows) indcate that I am connected
I can access the internet if I plug my IMac into the router via an ethernet cable
I have restarted the IMac and the I-Pad, rebooted the router and created a new network.  None of these changes has made a difference.  Does anyone have any ideas please?

  • Wirelessly connecting Windows laptops to an iMac G5 to share files Interne

I am wondering if someone could tell me how I can share files with windows PCs wirelessly but also securely. I have setup a network so that Windows PCs can access my iMac G5 that connects to the Internet through the airport card. I can get the windows PCs (laptops) to access the Internet through my iMac G5's airport card but I also want to share files back and forth wirelessly between the Windows PC laptops and the iMac G5. I am able to view all my iMac G5 files on my Windows PCs but that's not what I want. Isn't there a way to make it more secure so that only a shared folder is available for access by the Windows PCs? Right now if I go into Windows and setup a "My Network Places" then the PC has access to all those files on my iMac and that's not what I want. At this point someone with access to my iMac G5 could just wipe out everything. Not secure at all.
Could you guys give a novice some pointers?
I am still having problems with this. I can get my laptop to share my internet connection with my mac, but once I set a password on my Mac--well I can't get my laptop to connect. It is quite strange.
Someone suggested me to look here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1161.html
I tried to follow the directions on the link he suggested, but I'm using OS 10.3.9, so maybe that is the reason the directions are not exactly the same for my system.
Right now, I can open the System Preferences, go to Sharing preferences, turn on windows sharing...but that's as far as I can get.
Do you know if there is any document that can show me how to securely share files with a windows PC for my version of Mac OS?
I would also like a way to share files from my iMac to the Windows PC as well.
I have successfully been able to get my Windows Vista laptop sharing the internet connection with my iMac. The problem is that this connection is insecure, so therefore anyone can connect.
I have no idea and have not had luck finding any fix for this by browsing/search the knowledge database.
How can I set it so that anyone that wants to use the shared Ethernet connection (via my airport) has to input a password?
Every time I try to associate a password with the connection, my laptop is unable to share the connection any longer.
Windows will just tell me that the wireless connection is incompatible because of the security features of that network. It doesn't even ask me to input the password.
Besides this, I still am unable to get the file sharing to work. Is this because I'm also trying to share an internet connection between the two computers?? or...
After working on this problem for awhile, I've found some helpful information on the web that refers to connecting a Vista computer to a MAC with OS 10.5. Even though this is the case, I got my iMac to share it's internet connection and now I'm able to access the Windows vista laptop files on my iMac. I still, however, am unable to access the files on my iMac through the laptop. I've followed all the info on this website:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3022.html
but I'm still not having any luck.

  • Printer (Canon Pixma iP6600d) setup help iMac, TC, and Windows XP laptop

So here's my issue: I have my Canon printer connected to my time capsule. It shows up in airport utility as being connected. I have it set up on my iMac (ethernet connection to the TC) as the default printer, and there are no issues. I have a windows XP laptop (work computer) connected via wireless to the internet via the TC (Airport). Bonjour, running on the windows laptop does not see/recognize any available printers when I run the wizard. So, even though it appears to be set up as a shared printer, I can't get to it wirelessly from my PC. Please help!

Open Control Panel > Windows Firewall. If you have the firewall enabled, check that the setting "Don't allow exceptions", located under the General tab, is not enabled.
Also, if the firewall is enabled, click the Exceptions tab and ensure you can see Bonjour in the list and it is enabled (tick in the box).
Actually, as a brief test, you could disable the firewall to see if this is the cause of the printer not appearing. A working PC will show the Airport printer immediately after searching.

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

  • IMac wont boot after file transfer from Windows laptop

    Hi folks,
I am looking for some advice if anyone can help?
Sunday evening I transferred asome data off an old knackered Windows laptop via my home network. During the transfer, my 2013 iMac 27" started to really slow down and became unresponsive (i tried to cancel the data transfer and restart). In the end I have to force shut down by holding the power button in. Now, upon reboot of the machine, it won't get passed half way of the progress bar - and I've left it an hour at the most and given up.
I have attempted a verify and repair in Disk Utility, and even though I have managed to Verify Disk and Repair Disk, they took an absolute age to get through - I was chatting to an Apple Customer Care person, and they told me to chat back once it was done, which was probably 20-30mins after I started.
I then went on to Verify Disk Permission, which I left running for around 2 hours until it finished, and then moved onto Repair Disk Permissions, of which I cancelled after about 4 hours worth of it doing not a lot!
When I try and boot, it gets to a stage where the hdd is making a repetitive noise, as if it is stuck in a loop somehow.
I am running Yosemite 10.10.1, and have reset the PRAM to no avail.
I am fearing the worst tbh, but my main concern is the data on the drive - any tips on how to attempt to recover that data - or to fix the drive itself?
    Thanks
    Andy

The correct way to restart in Safe Mode is when you hear the "Bong" sound hold down and continue to hold down the Shift key until a progress bar appears. Here are Apple's instructions on how to correctly restart in Safe Mode.
I would recommend that you also look over Gray screen appears during startup.

I cannot use certain needed Windows based software on my Mac using Crossover (I really don't want to use Parallels or Boot Camp).
I have a Windows laptop that I could install the software on. But because I would be using it quite intensely throughout the day (it's stock trading software) I need to use in on my main machine.

  • Your Apple TV is connected to your wi fi network but cannot connect to the internet.  Airplay logo not available on ipad3, iPod touch3g and showing intermittently in iTunes on windows laptop.  Switched ISP a few days ago.  Entered pass key info on all.

I switched ISP a few days ago and had problems with airplay since.  After restarting and reinstalling and updating, re entering pass keys for new wi fi on everything,  Apple TV shows:  Your Apple TV is connected to your wi fi network but cannot connect to the Internet.  Ipad3 and iPod touch 3G have no airplay icon or get one briefly then it disappears again.  Same with itunes on windows laptop.
    Can anyone help?
    Bob

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

    Should be. See the following:

I am switching to Apple macbook pro from Windows laptop.  Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?  How can I transport from Windows to Mac?  What I have saved on external hardrives, will I be able to open it on Mac?

Office for Mac, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products, can open/edit/create Office documents. If your external drive is formatted NTFS then you can copy the Office documents to your computer and work on them. You won't be able to save the files back to your NTFS formatted drive. But you will be able to save the documents to your internal drive. You can move all the external files to your internal drive then format the external drive for Apple. Then you can copy the files back to your external drive for ongoing use.
