Imac Extreme Lagging

Hello to all,
I run an iMac (specified below), updated to Yosemite a couple of weeks ago. A couple of days ago the mac started lagging to the point I can't work; cursor lags, typing lags, opening apps bounce on the dock for a while, closing them takes for ever, mail is slowest ever, etc... I've tried resetting PRAM, I ran utility disk (revised and repaired), I reset SMC, I've tried working single apps, but nothing makes a difference; it keeps lagging and activity monitor shows steady system processes but spiking user processes. In case its worth mentioning, I use Google Drive, iCloud Drive, and Dropbox (its just the way I've devided my folders to keep low volumes). My internet service is slow and unstable (around 2mbps; its all that is available at my location). No apple stores or Genius Bars at reach. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Performance issue with brand new intel iMac extreme

I am at a loss to explain a problem I've been having and I thought I might put it out to you guys.
In September I purchased a macbook Pro (2.4 ghz, 4 GB RAM) to use in video editing with Final Cut Pro, and for the most part I've been thrilled. I use 1TB LaCie external drives connected via FW800, and perform Multiclip editing with 4-5 video streams at a time and only on occasion have dropped frames during the editing process.
In December I determined that I needed to have an additional system, and thought a 2.8Ghz Intel iMac extreme would be an excellent choice, since for the same price I could get a little more power in the processor, more hard drive space and a bigger screen to work on. When we picked up the new system in the store (The Grove Apple Store in LA), we had them upgrade the memory to 4GB.
Since day one we have had performance issues, including problems playing streaming and DVD video, severe delays mounting and unmounting drives (firewire and USB) and application images, and freezing while doing even simple tasks like printing or checking email. These problems occur even while there are no external drives are connected. I have none of these issues with the Macbook Pro, which has virtually an identical set of programs installed, and both running the same version of Leopard.
I already took the original iMac back to the store, and they exchanged it, but did not have 4GB sets of RAM in stock so they took the RAM from the original machine and put it in the new one. They said if I continued to have problems then it was most likely the RAM and I should come back when they got more in stock. I DID have the same problems with the new machine, and took it back to the Apple Store and they swapped the memory. It seemed to improve the issue, but now I'm seeing the same severe performance issues again.
All tech support can do is tell me to do a PRAM reset, which seems to improve things very temporarily (but that may be my imagination) or have me restart, which at least has the ability to make the printing of documents capable.
What I'm wondering is if it is likely that the RAM is the issue and I just got another bad batch, or if the iMac has some weird glitch that isn't present in the macbook Pro...?? Or could I have possibly gotten 2 bad systems in a row? It's extremely frustrating, and I KNOW it shouldn't be this way! It's so bad I get better performance out of my single-core G5 tower! How do I get a good working system that operates like it should? Am I better off getting another Macbook Pro? I'd rather not for several reasons...
I have xbench on both the MBP and the iMac and can provide test numbers if they'll help, as well as any other info.
Thank you so much for reading my novella of a post and also for any insight you have!
    Best,
    Travis

    Hi!
I got the same problem with my MacBook when it still was new in may 2006. It was supposed to be one of the faster Laptops around but it was soooo slow it drove me nuts. I can only advise to have a look if there is something hugging up your RAM and run some tests using these programs on your machine:
    Xbench:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10081
    MenuMeters:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10451
If they show any unusual results you might have your problem...
As to my problem with the MacBook: I did a complete re-install (writing the harddisk over with zeroes) and suddenly everything was just fine. (But be sure to back all your files before that, I learned this one the hard way.) I know it is just a standard answer, but it worked out for me this time...
Hope this helps in some ways.
    Cheers,
    Rene

  • EXTREME lag after installing Windows 8.1 pro via / Bootcamp assistant

Hey guys, today I've literally been through **** trying to get this game working on my MacBook Pro.
I've basically gone out & bought Windows 8, created a partition on my hardrive (of my MacBook Pro) & installed it into that partition using Apples 'Bootcamp assistant'. After installing the operating system I also loaded the drivers which were given to me by Apples 'Bootcamp assistant'.
I now have the game on the Windows 8 (on my MacBook) which is a £2000 machine... I have got to the menu & experienced extreme lag to the point where I've even managed to turn down all my video settings & it is still lagging a lot despite my high-end computer hardware - here is my computer http://store.apple.c...B/A&step=config#
I have tried running the game on this website http://www.systemrequirementslab.com & everything is great but it says I don't have the required 512MB of video RAM... It says I have 256MB. This is complete ********? I believe I have 2GB of GDDR5 video RAM. It also says that my graphics card is called 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter'. So I believe this is where the issue lies. My theory is for some reason one of the drivers which I have installed which was given to me by the Bootcamp assistant is messing with me.
This is literally all the information I can possibly provide, does anybody know how I could fix this?
    Thanks you!

If the underlying hardware was exposed correctly by the CSM-BIOS when Windows was installed, your Device Manager should look like this.
If the Windows installer did not see any devices as your screen indicates, Windows will use generic software-based drivers which will be very slow and painful.
Rudegar ... I think the Windows installer did not see  any hardware, otherwise there should be HW with yellow triangles with exclamation marks.

  • IMac Extreme + Boot Camp + Vista SP 1

Partitioned drive using boot camp and was able to successfully install Windows Vista w/ SP 1. System came up, inserted Leopard DVD to install drivers and ever since doing so, Windows will only boot into safe mode.
Have not tried seeing if Fusion can read the partition successfully or not.
    Any ideas?

    Update on this....
identical iMacs bought at the same time (when the debuted last year). Bootcamp install of Windows Vista w/ SP 1 works like a dream. Only change up from install directions (because of failure on other machine), was that post driver install, ran Apple updater and pulled down the boot camp updates. Worked with no issue..
On second machine (which assumed identical) not so lucky. Machine would only boot into safe mode after driver install. After getting into safe mode, disabled the ATI drivers and left it boot (successfully) back to normal mode running the standard Microsoft video drivers.
Download the ATI2600 drivers from ATI and installed. Video is back and golden, but without the dual monitor support that came with the Apple drivers.
Does anyone know if its possible to extract just the ATI drivers off the Leopard DVD and give that another go? I would really like to have the dual monitor support capabilities that I had on the first machine (24" iMac Extreme with a 19" Viewsonic monitor). Only difference between the two systems is the external monitor.
    Thanks,
    macfoo

  • Extreme lag in CS5

I'm experiencing extreme lag while using photoshop lately. I'm running CS5 on a Mac OS X 10.5.8. My computer is about three years old but the hard drive was replaced about 6 months ago.
Basically what happens is that the program runs incredibly slow especially when opening files and saving files, no matter what the size. I have ample space on my hard drive and ps is not using the scratch disk for RAM or anything. I've also uninstalled or unchecked a variety of features that I don't use. This only started happening two days ago. I've installed all updates for Mac and PS but nothing has changed. I'm an art student so I'm using PS all the time, so it's become a real pain. Thanks for the help.

  • Extreme Lag/Crash on New iPad iTunes App

when browsing the store, i get extreme lag on both page updating, touch ( when scrolling on screen, no response), and in a couple cases the iTunes App just flat out crashes to home screen
after waiting for a  time it does show stuff, but missing alot of images/parts of page

it does NOT do then when in the App Store, or any other app
crash logs show a couple Low Memory's with only "MobileStore " as largest process ( only app running )
as well as a couple crash's under " com.apple.Mobilestore failed to resume in time " and

    same with my iTouch 4
I have been getting many LowMemory and MobileStore crashes since 2012-04-29
I updated to iOS 5.1.1 today hoping it would fix the problem but it is just the same.
    I have 2.3GB spare.
most problems seem to be with podcast pages with multiple entries.
mobileStore has been painfully slow since they added the DOWNLOADED symbols.
I had difficulty getting iTunes to see the iTouch, even after updating to the latest version (10.6.1.7)
since 5.1 I have normally had to stop and start apple services before seeing the iTouch in iTunes.

  • Extreme lag during song deletion

I am getting some extreme lag, (a few minutes for each song) when I delete music in iTunes.
I've read up on it a bit, and I'm thinking it's because of my library size - which is about 15,000 songs after adding all of my older music - now totals about 82GB. I've restarted iTunes, rebooted, and checked most everything. I don't know what else to do, iTunes is becoming almost unusable; even other small operations are slower than ever.
I just wanna know if there's anything I could try, or if it's just a fault on iTunes's part.
    S'never happened to me before.
    Thanks in advance.

A couple of thoughts, you quite a large library which is always going to be a bit slower than a small one. Is it on an external drive or network that might be slowing things down. This is particularly and issue if the library database files themselves are on the external resource.
Do you have a lot of smart playlists with live updating, that can be a significant overhead.
The other thing I wonder about is virus checking, it might be worth briefly disabling virus checking to see if that makes a difference. If it does try excluding iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml from virus checking They are in your iTunes folder in Music.

  • EXTREME LAG after latest update, unable to playback.

I've been rocking on Premiere CC for many months and ran the latest update on my way out of the studio Friday, coming in today on Monday I am unable to even edit anything due to extreme lag. I press play on a timeline and then it may be minutes before I get control of Premiere again and I see a frame every 15secs. All other apps run fine. What could be the issue and how can I fix it ASAP?

Apparently this is the issue I am running into.   http://forums.adobe.com/message/5931221
I am dropping back to 7.1 for now until I can figure out what else to do, not that this was a major update that I'm missing out on much.

  • Extreme lagging In Premiere Pro CC - Settings Related?

I am editing a project with MXF files on Premiere Pro CC on an a Mac Pro with 30GB of RAM
I've had no problem with lagging in the past, but this projects involves much more footage than any of the previous projects, so I figured that was causing the problem. Just to clarify, playback is working perfectly - it's every other task i perform in Premiere that lags miserably. Locking/unlocking tracks, copying/pasting, zooming in or out on a sequence. There could be a 5-7 second delay for any of these tasks.
As a test I connected my drive to an iMac, loaded the project, and encountered no lagging issue whatsoever. I decided to continue working on this project on the iMac as the lagging was becoming a major problem, so I went bac to the Mac Pro, synced my Premiere settings on icloud, and then opened the project again on the iMac.
When the project opened on the iMac, the lagging was back! Which leads me to believe it has something to do with a settings file. I've used the same settings on other projects (I have keyboard settings and layout settings) but this is the first time I've come across this lagging issue. In my sync preferences I have settings, workspace layouts and keyboard shortcuts all checked. I then selected to automatically clean settings on application quit, and when I reopened the project the lagging issue had once again disappeared.
Would love to know why my settings could be causing this, and why they are only problematic in this project.
    Thanks!

Probably this isn't the particular thing that seems to have tripped the project ... noting that it once ran good on the imac but after syncing slowed to crap ... but noting you mentioned a drive for your project, that could be a bit of a bottle-neck. It's better to have say your program/system on a drive, footage files on another, and cache files on a third. One good poster here always suggests five different drives, with perhaps the footage actually being on a RAID array simply for speed.
If all project files including cache and footage are on one drive, that's demanding a LOT of through-put from the drive and subsystems.

  • Pavilion 300-030 extreme lag

Experiencing extreme lags during simple operations like opening an email or opening up the Chrome browser. I upgraded my memory with a Crucial 8GB single DDR3 1600MT/s notebook memory and it shows in my system as 12.0GB. Is there something I am missing or doing wrong? Thanks in advance

Aloha Dean,Thank you for responding. I use an email client called Thunderbird by Mozilla and I have never had lag before with my tablet, home and work stations by for some reason the Pavilion 300-030 lags all the time. When I click on a different email or when I save an email to a folder the hourglass pops along with "Not responding" .Our internet at the office is decent and never had a problem with speed. Opening new pages sometimes take twice as long as normal. What do you think?John

  • Magic Mouse Not working with iMac. EXTREME lag.

Here's a link to video of whats happening - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOogRQu93g0
The whole time I was just moving it around in a circular motion. Batteries = 97% I just got my logicboard repaired on my iMac G5 and this has been happening ever since

Try unpairing it. Do you have another mouse that you can use to see if it is the mouse, rather than the computer? If the second mouse works properly, try rep-pairing Magic Mouse.

  • Extreme lag for Print window with networked printer

Hi, i have 10.4 on an iMac and my Powerbook.
I have a USB printer shared via airport from the iMac.
With any program, the first time I click "print" it lags extremely. The delay is like 3 minutes. The first few times it hung like that I forced quit the programs, but have since learned it recovers if you leave it. Subsequent printing panels come up instantly.
If I turn off airport the print dialog comes up instantly even in newly opened programs.
So, my question is, what the heck? Is there anything I can do? I didn't have this probem in 10.3, so I guess this is an introduced bug. I don't believe the configuration ahs otherwise changed.
    thanks.

If your previous Epson worked via Windows Printing, then you know that you can't use an Epson-supplied driver for Windows Printing. You Must use a Gutenprint driver or other CUPS modular driver. The Epson driver is limited to USB only. If there isn't a Gutenprint driver yet available, you may need to buy a CUPS modular driver from www.printfab.net.

A very quick scan of your results show at least two things:
    uninstall the Intego Virus Barrier,
and, unless you need it, uninstall Teamviewer.
Both will slow down the performance (do a Google search on Teamviewer).
As an aside, you have the minimum of 4 GB of RAM; if your machine allows it, double that to 2 x 4 GB. You and your Mac will be much happier with its performance in general.

  • Why is my iMac suddenly lagging on my user account?

    Hi,
This morning, I woke my iMac from sleep to find that it was running super slow... Applications that would open in the blink of an eye are now taking up to 5 minutes, that is if they even open, as now applications are sometimes just not responding, resulting in me having to force quit. It is basically impossible to use.
Another problem is that I've noticed that I cannot see the contents of my external hard drive. It shows up in finder, I can read and write [i tested by transferring files to it, worked fine], but if I click on it, nothing shows up, like all of the files have been hidden or something.
However, when I use my brothers user, I can view the contents of the hard drive [he also has an admin acount] and the computer does not lag at all! I am confused as to what happened, as the whole system was working perfectly yesterday.
I am doubtful that it is a ram problem, as I have 8gb of ram and dont use heavy applications very often [the main one is Logic]. I havent installed or uninstalled any programs recently either.
Running a late 2011 iMac, OSX 10.7.5, with 8gb of ram.
What has gone wrong here? Any ideas?

This can be caused by many things, the most obvious items are a HD that is too full.  OS X really needs 10-15% of the total HD space available. You can check that information by opening a Finder window, then highlight the HD and click Command I (I as in Ivan.)
Another popular thing is you may not have much Free RAM, you can open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and click the System Memory tab, look to see how much FREE RAM the system has. Also look and see if there are any applications using a large percentage of the CPU, look in the %CPU column and you can see.
In addition you can also just restart the computer or restart in Safe Mode which will clear some caches, it's possible one may have become corrupted.
Finally you can read the Spinning Beach Ball of Death article, this will help you locate exactly what is the cause of your SBBOD.
