  • Snow leopard iMac fails to start up have time machine - what next?

I have an iMac which is powering up the showing a spinning icon and the apple logo. But it goes no further. I have tried presiing shift on start up and zapping the pram but no improvement.
For a while the iMac has been failing to start up but always did second time round.
What is the strategy here? I have an external drive with time machine backups and the snow leopard install disks. I also have access to extra external hard drives and a mac mini.
What would you recommend and what is the issue?

    Hi ukcfuser;
Where is Time Machine backing up to?
Hopefully not your system disk because it may have filled it up which can prevent you Mac from starting.
I would suggest that you boot from the install DVD for your Mac. Let us know that results of that.

  • G4 iMac failing to start.

    Hi there
I have a G4 iMac here running Tiger (10.4.11) which is having startup issues. It freezes at the blue screen with Mac OSX panel and blue progression bar, when the progression bar is full. The text in the box says "starting Mac OSX".
It started going wrong after repeated and frequent power failures in the building, so i presume it to be a currupted system file of some sort.
I ran fsck which found and fixed a load of stuff, and I also ran techtool pro, which found no errors. As the freezing occured in the final stages of booting (and the mac is set up to auto-login) I figured it could be a corrupt startup item, so I tried safebooting, but it ignores the fact that I'm holding down shift.
Short of an archive install, anyone got any ideas?

Yes Tarin – I knew why it happened, and that power fluctuations are dangerous to systems. What I was really after was a troubleshooting solution, but it is now a moot point - because...
Update: I started up in verbose mode, and saw 100s of Netinfo errors, reporting "cannot find child" (being a parent myself, it had my sympathies). After restarting in single user mode and renaming var/db/local.nidb (among others). Found that the situation did not improve.
I basically ran out of time to investigate further, as hungry operators were nipping at my heels to get access to the files, I just did an archive and install. I'll run combo updaters tonight after ormal working hours.
    Thanks everyone, anyway.

  • Fails to start up from CD

I need to repair my HD with Disk Utility. Of course I must start up with install CD but my iMac fails to start up from either the Leopard CD or the original OSX CD.  What can I do?  Thanks for info.  Mario

    Baltwo:
Thanks for reply, but I need some explanation.  PRAM I'm familiar with and I know what to do.  NVRAM and SMC, however, new to me.  I'd be grateful if you would explain where to find them and how to proceed.  Many thanks, Mario.

  • Safari fails to start and crashes

Today I tried to open a link from an Apple ap-store email and Safari failed to open and reported a crash error message, It worked great yesterday? I searched through the forums and tried a few of the listed fixes but nothing has worked for me. So far the most complex attempt was deleting the webpageicons.db file, it did not help. I placed the webpagicons.db file back where it came from just incase. I have also tried to see if I have any plug ins running but Safari dosn't even load so I cant even get into the preferences options. I am very much a rookie with my iMac as I have rarely had any issues that needed support. This will be the first major trouble I have had with my mac since I bought it. I posted one of the error messages below, I have tried to open Safari nine times and each time it closes out without starting. Any help would be greatfull, thank you in advance.

    Lex,
I think I was able to get Safari to uninstall properly this time, I was prompted for a password and it shows in the trash can now. However after trying to reinstall it still errors out at the very end of the install and asks me to contact the software manufacturer? Ugh...
    Andy,
Here is the text from console, sorry its a long one for only 20 min. of up time. I've never used console before wow is there a lot going on here... I grabbed the wrong log the first time and had to come back and edit...  I also left some of the original text from the old log as it has a bunch of repeating FLASH reports that might mean something.

  • Fails to start

Hello, I have recently been having difficulty with two of our ARD Admin stations. The entirety of the networks in question are 10.4.10 with ARD 3.1 and are all PowerPC. When the Admin station (PPC iMac) tries to launch ARD we get the dialog that basically says ARD failed to start, and to try and reinstall or reboot the machine. Obviously neither works, which is why I am here.
I have followed this guide (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108021) to Uninstall ARD3. Since I had Client 3.1 installed, I had to open the ARD .mpkg to reinstall ARD. Before I re-launched ARD, I made sure to run Software Update and reboot, in order to make sure the Admin and Client apps were the same version, 3.1
This does not work on either station. AT BEST, it works for 24 hours or so (possibly until logout/login) and then I get the same error message.
    Any thoughts?

I've got this same problem running 2.2 I've installed it on my computer at home as a test and it worked just fine. The only difference between that one and my work computer is that i have more software installed at work. Doesn't anyone have some sort of fix for this stupid error?

I installed CS3 from backup to a new iMac when my old iMac failed.  How do I activate CS3 suite?
When I try starting Photoshop, for example, it tells me uninstall then reinstall the product OR contact product support.
However, when I phone product support, it says there is no product support for CS3 and to go to the Forums.
    Thank you.

  • Macbook Pro to iMac Migration Not Starting

I want to migrate my users, apps, settings, etc from a macbook pro to a new iMac.  The process fails to start.  I've tried 1) machines joined by ethernet cable (no switch) and 2) Time Machine.
    The machine configurations:
Source: MBPro quad core OSx 10.6.8.  Upgraded to latest software update.
Destination: iMac i7 running whatever version of OSx they are sold with at Apple Stores.  Purchased yesterday.
    Ethernet Method:
I turned on the iMac and after answering a few basic (e.g. language questions), I was presented with a Migration dialog.  I  didn't have a proper firewire cable lying around so I selected the ethernet option and connected the MBPro and the iMac with this cable. The iMac displayed a passcode and said to start Migration Assistant on the source, i.e. MBPro.  I started MA on the MBPro and typed in the numeric passcode.  The iMac recognized the MBPro and displayed my migration options (e.g. accounts, applications, etc).  The transfer button was grayed out while an estimate of the disk space needed was computed.  After several minutes of the "preparing my computer" notice on the MBPro, the MBPro said it was ready.  The "Transfer" button in the iMac was active.
Clicking on this "Transfer" button appears to have NO effect on either machine.
I let the machines sit for several hours.  Still no noticeable change on either machine.
The transfer process does not appear to have started.
    Time Machine Method:
Same experience except not the TM drive is connected to the iMac with a Firewire 400 connection.
    What is going on?

Connect the two computers via Firewire cable. Boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the iMac normally. The MBP's hard drive should appear on the iMac's Desktop. You can migrate from it as you would from a disk drive. Also, see:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- What to do if migration is unsuccessful;
    MacBook Air- Migration Tips and Tricks;
MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • My iMac does not start.

My iMac does not start. When I turn it on, it stays loading in the half and doesn't continue. Some days before I had updated my iMac to Yosemite 10.10. Everything was ok but yesterday I decided tu reboot it and when it was turning on this happened, it kept stuck at the middle of the bar. I have the latest model of MacBook Air '13.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

Reinstalling is not possible, because the installer says that the update is allready installed.
That implies that your new machine has a newer build than the combo update. In that case, boot with the restore disc that came with it and restore that.
The baseline 10.6.2 build is 10C540 and according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 yours is probably 10C2234.

  • IMac won't start - should I reinstall OS?

Recently my iMac won't start up - it goes to screen with folder + question mark. I've run Disk Utility, repaired hard drive, but there were no reported repairs to make.
Occassionally it will start up, and everything seems normal until suddenly the beach ball appears and everything freezes. 99% of tries it won't start up (i get the ? folder). Is it worth erasing the disk and reinstalling everything to see if a fresh start will help, or is it likely that the hardware is damaged?
Don't want to bother erasing it if there's no point... any advice greatly appreciated.
Also - anyone who's had their iMac repaired - what are the costs like?

I've just suddenly had the same problem - for no apparent reason as far as I can tell. The night before last I switched off my iMac as normal, and yesterday morning switched it back on. At first it would start, but crashed as soon as I tried to start any applications. Then it wouldn't start at all, and just got as far as the gray screen with the apple on it. After trying resetting the PRAM, switching on and holding the on button for 10 seconds, it was no different...
So, I tried doing a archive-reinstall from the original leopard DVD I bought from apple. This did a successful disk verification, but then said it couldn't install mac os due to a problem with the basesystem package. After that it wouldn't let me try another archive-install and only gave the options to install as new, or erase and install. The latter I don't want to do, and the former just gives the same basesystem error... All I get now is a flashing folder with a question mark and not even the gray screen...
I have tried using the diskutility to verify/ repair the hard drive and it says all is well...
I have heard this may all be due to dodgy RAM chips, but I have never messed with them or altered them. It just seems odd they should suddenly fail when they were working fine before.....
Any ideas would be much appreciated. A lot of data at risk
    Dan.

  • G4 iMac will not start normally

My wife's G4 iMac will not start normally. I have used the procedures from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393 and the "Disk Utility" on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 to no avail.
When trying to start, a message comes up saying that the computer must be rebooted. Trying to boot in "Safe Mode" fails after an hour and shuts down the computer, and the "Disk Utility" runs for an hour or two and then gives a message that it was unable to repair the "minor error" on the hard-drive.
After force starting the iMac by holding the power button until the command line appears, I tried running fsck, but the commands are unrecognized. However, if I type in "mac-boot" at the command prompt, the iMac will start. I have copied all of my wife's photos, movies and music, and Word and Excel documents, etc. to my XP PC's hard-drive using USB flash drives.
    My question is two-fold:
#1. I have heard that "Disc Warrior" is excellent at resolving hard-drive errors. Can anyone comment on "Disc Warrior" and is there anything else out there that someone can recommend?
#2. I bought RAM to bring the total up to one gig, so I was thinking of upgrading the hard-drive and installing Tiger on the new and larger drive while in the "Ball" changing the RAM. What is the maximum capacity hard-drive I can put into the G4 800mhz iMac without any problems and is there any particular model hard-drive that seems to work best?

I tried reading the link that you posted http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html but I don't have a disk with the "Apple Hardware Test".
Since I made the post that you replied to, things have gotten worse. I can no longer get onto the internal hard-drive. I have tried many different methods including the methods written about in the linked article you supplied. I can get onto the Installation CD and I can run "Disk Utility" from the CD. I have repaired the file permissions, but when I run "Repair Disk", it runs for about two hours and then suspends operations with a dialog box stating, "First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped repairing Volume because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit." and then in the progress box after the list of addresses, there is a message:
(in red) Incorrect number of thread records
    Invalid leaf record count
    Invalid Map Node
    Invalid directory Item Count
    Invalid directory Item Count
    Invalid volume directory Count
    Invalid volume file Count
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Invalid volume free block count
    Volume header needs minor repair
    (in green) repairing volume
(in red) The volume could not be repaired
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
(in black) 1 HFS volume checked.
(in red) 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
(in black) repair attempted on 1 volume
(in red) 1 volume could not be repaired.
I recently bought the 1/2gb replaceable RAM and the 1/2gb "Hidden" or "Factory Installed" RAM. I was planning on installing them soon. Since the "Disk Utility" is telling me that there are faults on the internal hard-drive and I have to go into the "Ball" to replace the "Hidden" or "Factory Installed" RAM, I figured that I might as well replace the hard-drive and redo the system.
Unless someone comes up with something I can do which will not cost me much money, I figure that I might as well install the RAM and a 120gb Western Digital Hard-drive that is about a year old, but was only used for a few days in an XP PC. Will the 120gb drive be recognized? I was thinking of partitioning it as 80gb and 40gb partitions. Does that sound good? I would install the OS on both partitions so that I could always boot if there was a failure.

  • IMac Won't Start Up/Boot

My iMac won't start up. I've tried holding all kinds of key combinations while I turn it on, but it doesn't even get that far. It gets stuck on a folder with the Apple picture alternating with a question mark. It doesn't do anything else for a while, and then the fan turns on (???).

This is indicative of a corrupted system or drive. The first thing to try is:
    Repairing the Hard Drive
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this doesn't solve the problem then you will have to reinstall OS X. If the drive tests out OK per the above then you can reinstall without erasing the hard drive:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
