IMAC fan and software misbehaviour

I've seen the discussions about loud fans, but would be pleased to describe a somewhat different situation with my iMAC (used and a couple of years old but Intel and 4GB RAM).
Sometimes I try to start the machine, and when it doesn't start, I hold the button. When I do that and the iMAC finally starts up, there is the loud fan.
I can live with loud fans, except that in this case a disaster occurs if I try to go into Bootcamp. Windows gets stuck. The only solution is forced switching off of the iMAC - Win ctrl + alt + del won't do it, so I simply have to use the Mac system to shut down the machine.
After several attempts to start up in Bootcamp, Windows finally appears.
This anomaly seems directly associated with going into Bootcamp when the fan is howling.
To start up in MAC mode, now, if it doesn't respond immediately to the button, I switch off the current, wait 5 seconds and try again. Eventually it comes to its senses.
Could this be associated with the phenomena of loud fans described elsewhere?
Please excuse me if I don't reply immediately (for other reasons)... and thanks,
philolog

The fan running constantly at around 4500rpm
Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
It may be that something is consuming a lot of CPU time. I'd launch the Activity Monitor utility, set the list at the top to "All Processes", then click on the "% CPU" heading until the top CPU users are at the top of the list. That may show you the culprit. You can also click on the "CPU" tab near the bottom to see an overview of CPU use.

  • G5 imac fans and Classic apps

My wife has been having problems with the fan on her 17 inch 1.8 G5 iMac running full bore at times and not slowing down again unless she restarts the machine. What I have found is that whenever she uses Pagemaker in Classic mode, the fans go to max and stay there until she quits Pagemaker. She can keep Classic running and there is no fan problem. I haven't tried it with other Classic apps as Pagemaker is the only one she uses. Is it just a case of the fan controller being too smart for its own good and not basing it's speed on actual processor temp but on what it expects an app will need. I know on my dual G5 I'll launch a dinky game and the fans kick up in anticipation as the graphics load and then as if it relaizes, "oh, lame game" they slow back down to normal. Have other people experienced this increse of fan speed with Classic apps?

Ted, the Classic and Pagemaker combination actually puts a fair load on the processor (mostly from Classic) . I've always noticed an increase in temperature and fan speed when using this combination (though they don't run "full bore" quite.

  • What Fan Cooling software to use on imac? (Leopard 10.5.1)

    Hello,
I'm a frequent online user (online games, websites) and I would like to know what kind of fan control software can I use to cool my imac.
If you suggest one, tell me what specific settings I need to cool my imac properly.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Energy Saver in Apple menu -> System Preferences can manage performance of the machine within specs. No other fan control software does it within spec guidelines, and could without meaning to cause the machine to overheat if it turns off the fan when the machine needs to cool down. Please identify your iMac:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
and see if it is under one of these exchange programs to see if the power supply may need fixing so the fan operates only when necessary:

I have the latest iTunes software on my iMac mini and now have IOS7 on my iPhone and now I cant sync music from my library either by wifi or by usb? I get song lists that scoll at a million miles an hour but no actual content. What should I do to get my music onto my iphone.

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • Project/Task Management Software for iMac, iPad and iPhone

    Hi,
I work at a Espresso Bars company in Sydney and we have a small but busy Design & Marketing department.  We're looking for the best, yet simplest software so we can manage all the marketing and design projects.
I've seen a few good Online Management Software but they are quite expensive ($25+ per month per user).  The good thing about those systems is that you can access it from anywhere and people can collaborate, ask questions about a project, give feedback about a design, enter a new task or tick as completed, etc... And you can use it on an iMac, an iPad and an iPhone.
I came across Projector for iMac and iPad, but it is not online, if you want to share the project from iMac to iPad you have to conect your iPad to your computer and sync it.  It also works by projects, so there is no way for you to see in a single screen all the projects you're currently working on and the process of them.  So, although it being very user friendly and excellent UI, not sure if it is what we want.
I wanted to ask you if you know about another Project/Task Management Software that we can use on an iMac, iPad and perhaps and iPhone as well.  Something that you either buy the app once or if you have to pay a monthly fee it needs to be very low.  If it is online it would be much better! but everything would work I reckon.
User friendly and good UI software are preferred.
Thank you so much for your help!
    Cheers

  • IMac no video, fans and cd drive work?

A friend asked me to take a look at his computer. It is an iMac, 24" display, model MA878LL.
I plug the iMac in and press the power button. The fans run and I can insert and eject CDs but there is no video. I tried pulling the memory and resetting it but that did not do anything.

It would be best for your friend to contact the Local Apple Store or an Authorized Apple Service Provider and have it checked out.

  • All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software

All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software. Any ideas of what is wrong and how to fix it?

10.7.5 is not the latest system, 10.8.3 is. However your message sounds like  a Kernel Panic, does the message look similar to About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages? If so, then if you can get the machine to restart normally then please post the Kernel Panic Report which you can find by following directions in How to log a kernel panic. Please post back with the KP log, and we can take a look. However if the machine continues to not restart then my guess is a hardware failure suck as a hard disk or failed RAM in which case you should take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

The computer (top / back of monitor) gets really hot within minutes.

    How old is the iMac?
With no backup, you have probably lost all your data.
Sounds like serious hardware problem for which you are going to have to take it to Apple for an estimate of repairs.

  • What is the best setup (cords, hardware and software) for converting tape cassettes to mp3 using iMac?

I have a huge collection of tape cassettes that I want in my iTunes library.  I want to know what the best cords, hardware (type of Tape cassette player/recorder) and software to use.

It depends on what kind of inputs your Mac has:
If your iMac is a 2012 or older model it probably has an audio line input, in which case you can directly connect your tape deck outputs to your iMac.  Generally this requires a cable with 2x RCA male connectors on one end and 1x 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo male connector on the other end.
If you have a more recent iMac that does not have a line input you will need to get a USB audio interface like a Focusrite Forte, but in these cases you will need to pay attention to the kind of cable inputs the USB device has.
In both cases you will need recording software.  There are many choices.  I have used Sound Studio with great success for tapes, vinyl and live recordings.  (Note: if you are using a USB audio interface it may come with its own recording software.)
Pay attention to whether or not your tapes were recorded with or without Dolby B or C noise reduction; and also whether or not your tape deck supports none, Dolby B or Dolby C - getting each tape matched with your deck settings makes a big difference in the results.  And depending on how quality conscious you are you may also want or need some noise reduction software, in which case I suggest looking at Wave Arts MR Noise, SoundSoap or Audacity.
You might also consider just purchasing selected CDs instead of investing in all the work required to set up, record, edit & clean up recordings from some of your old tapes.

  • I turned my iMac on and the fan is so loud...never heard this before. any ideas?

I turned my iMac on and the fan is so loud...never heard this before. any ideas?

An SMC reset may fix it, although it may not prove to be a permanent solution:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If it re-occurs I'd suspect a failed sensor.

  • IMac fan keeps running despite resetting the SMC

My iMac fan keeps running loudly even when the computer isn't doing any thing, and I just started it up.
I have tried resetting the SMC and that didn't help.
I also recently had to insert a new hard drive instead of the old one that failed. I am thinking that either the SSD is just hotter than the old hard drive, or that the hard drive sensor is somehow inverted in the plug. Is there any way of testing the hard drive sensor to see if that is faulty, or to test the fan. When I look at the Activity Monitor the system is 87% idle...

Although you don't mention which imac you have since 2009 Apple has used hard drives with the temp sensor built in. When replacing one of these late model drives you have to use the same type hard drive or you get fans running all the time because the temp sensor isn't detected. You might want to try some third party software such as iStat Menus, SMC Fan Control or HDD a Fan Control. Google them for reviews.
