IMac fan / sensor problem

Hello!
Some days ago I automatically sent my iMac to sleep via the "Energy Saver --> Schedule" menu in the systems preferences. When I woke it up the next morning, the CPU fan didn't just blow once and ran quietly in the background as usual, but it keeps blowing at max. speed which is really loud and annoying.
So I went to search for the problem and found it right away possibly: the GPU heatsink temperature sensor constantly reports 126-127 degrees Celsius, which is quite impossible I ran the quick hardware test with the startup disk and got the following error code: 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0H-127.875 - which indicates a sensor problem as well I think.
My question is, if there is anything I can do to regulate the fan or the sensor by software. All I found was several programs that can regulate the minimum rotation per minute, but not change the maximum. As there isn't really much damaged (as far as I know now just one out of three GPU sensors), it would be really annoying to have to let it repaired. I'm not playing graphics intensive games, so it won't ever get too hot.
Anyway, right as it is now, it just freaks me out and just leaving it that way is clearly not an option.
Thanks for your help
Michael

Yes I see what you mean all the other temps are fine so I think your original guess of a sensor problem is probably right. You are covered by warranty so I'd contact Apple to complain about it. BTW if you haven't already I would recommend purchasing AppleCare before your 1 year warranty is up.

  • Fan/sensor problem. Please help! 4SNS/1/4000000:TsOP

    Hello people,
I have the fans of my Santa Rosa 2.4MBP constantly on at 6000RPM. Hope the problem is the thermal sensor... But which of them???
Apple Hardware test shows an error:
    4SNS/1/4000000:TsOP
I can't send the laptop to the Apple service center, for it's pretty far away from here. And I would fix everything myself, rather then paying those guys.. I mean I am qualified enough with assembling and disassembling this MBP and changing a sensor doesn't sound as a scary task.
Please tell me it's not the logic board, that got in trouble.
    Thanks!

A thermal sensor lead to the motherboard has come off (or the sensor has failed) and so it runs in 100% fans on mode 'just in case' to prevent any overheating issues.
If you're careful and competent you could check if one of the leads is off yourself but if the sensor has blown I think you'll need Apple to fix that. (Pics to help you along)

  • IMac Fan Noise Problem (Reset SMC isn't working)

The Fans on my early 2009 iMac have been running very loud non-stop for the past few days.
I reset the SMC, and that took care of the problem for a few hours, but later that night, it happened again.
Thinking that my system may have been overheating, I reset my SMC again, and then installed iStat to monitor the temps and fans.
Everything looked normal, and the fan noise stopped after ther reset. That night, same thing, fans came back on, but iStat couldn't read the temps anymore...there was just a " - " where the temp should have been.
Anyone know what is going on, or how I can better diagnose the isse?

    I got the same problem..
Just started couple days ago.. SMC reset worked but still it starts up again... I even got the vacuum out to suck out a little dust perhaps, no dice.

  • IMac Fan Noise - Not The Usual Problem

    Hi,
I have seen plenty of discussions on iMac fan noise but mine is a little different. A week ago, a 'tink' noise (similar to tapping your fingernail on a glass) started coming from my mid 2011 iMac. At first, I thought it was the "click of death" for my hard drive, so I replaced it myself. This didn't fix the noise, so I ran an extended hardware test. This came back with a 4MEM error. I had some spare RAM, fitted it, ran the test again, no 4MEM error.
So, I booted the iMac again. 'Tink'... 'tink'. I finally located it to the bottom right of my iMac, where the optical drive fan is located. This fan has always rattled a little now and again but now it seems intent on driving me round the bend with its very own form of torture. At first, the 'tink' was now and again, but now it constant. 'tinktinktinktinktink'. Is there a way to stop the optical fan for now? I don't use the optical drive often anyway. Or would it just be a replacement fan?
Resetting SMC or PRAM does nothing.

This may be way off target, in which case ignore me. Do you have an app called Free Memory installed? There have been a few posts on here where it seems to cause repetitive odd noises to occur, particularly when running Mavericks?

  • IMac fans sufficient?

I'm trading in my original MBP 17" for a 27" iMac. One of the biggest issues I had with the MBP was running World of Warcraft without it going into what I call "super lag mode." I FINALLY figured out that regardless of what the temp display read, putting a fan up to the MPB instantly solved the issue; I've been without this problem for over a year.
Now that I'm swapping to an iMac, should I worry about keeping it cool enough to run the game? Because putting a fan to it will not be an option as the entire unit will be on my desk as opposed to having my MBP under my desk as I do now. Thanks in advance.

Ok. But my concern is whether or not the iMac heat sensors and fans are faulty like those on the MBP. After 2 years of going back and forth between Apple and Blizzard, Apple finally agreed to replace my logic board. That didn't help. Then they replaced my heat sensor cables and fans. That worked temporarily. Finally my HDD failed. After it was replaced, it worked fine again.... for about a week. Ultimately the only solution that worked was setting a fan up in front of my MBP.
The funny thing is that even though having the fan on completely eliminated the frame drop, the temp still would always read between 70 and 77 degrees. Which to mean means that the sensors were not reading the actual temp correctly and possibly prompted the logic board to ramp things down until the faulty temp it was detecting returned to normal.
The temporary fix after each Apple Care replacement indicates to me that the constant high temps ultimately wore down each of the parts. Once replaced, they worked until over used again. The nail int he coffin for me is that the HDD failed, and with the new HDD all problems were gone... for a couple weeks before it started up again. After placing the fan in front, I haven't had a problem in over year.
So ultimately, though a little thicker isn't the iMac just an upright MBP? What's to stop the iMac from acting the same way?

  • Fan speed problem Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC - please help

Please HELP, I have a fan speed problem with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC
This is a NOT an Intel machine. I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8
    Power Mac G5 - PowerMac 7,2 - Power PC 970 (2.2) - 1.8 GHz with 2 CPUs - L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB - Memory 8 GB - Bus Speed 900 MHz - Boot ROM version 5.1.5b1
I have included below Links to download a sound file (.m4a) that I recorded of the fan speed problem and both a .pdf and .spx files of my system profile.

When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
    Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
    Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
    Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉
    Memory Controller Heatsink: 93.2℉
    Processor Card A Ambient: 77.5℉
    Processor Card B Ambient: 77.0℉
    5) zapped the PRAM
    6) followed the SMU reset instructions for
    Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
    • Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..

Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.

anyway i managed to control my system fan to monitor temp1 (motherboard temp) running:

  • IMac fan keeps running despite resetting the SMC

My iMac fan keeps running loudly even when the computer isn't doing any thing, and I just started it up.
I have tried resetting the SMC and that didn't help.
I also recently had to insert a new hard drive instead of the old one that failed. I am thinking that either the SSD is just hotter than the old hard drive, or that the hard drive sensor is somehow inverted in the plug. Is there any way of testing the hard drive sensor to see if that is faulty, or to test the fan. When I look at the Activity Monitor the system is 87% idle...

Although you don't mention which imac you have since 2009 Apple has used hard drives with the temp sensor built in. When replacing one of these late model drives you have to use the same type hard drive or you get fans running all the time because the temp sensor isn't detected. You might want to try some third party software such as iStat Menus, SMC Fan Control or HDD a Fan Control. Google them for reviews.

    Just updated details - os x 10.8.5 .....
found an answer that could have been problem with CPU and a runaway application (possibly Bin Weevils) which my son was running at the time.  I shall check the activity monitor next time to see what percentage cpu is being used..

  • MEGA 865 fan control problems after suspend/hibernate.

I'm seeing the CPU fan control problems, and it's REALLY ANNOYING, as it means I have to leave the machine on all the time. Specifically, after suspending or hibernating the machine, on wakeup the CPU fan goes to full speed and STAYS THERE until I reboot.
This is on a CLEAN INSTALL of Windows XP.
Is there going to be a fix for this from MSI soon? Because it's really ruining the experience of using the MEGA.

    Hi guys,
    I have builded a Mega 651 attaching a Celeron 2.4 Ghz.
I installed the cooler but I got really scared when I realised that the fan run for 2 secs and then stopped.
    Is this normal?
If yes then i am assuming that the voltage of the fan is controlled by a thermal sensor, meaning that the fan goes on when the temperature reaches a certain limit.
Can the threshold temperature be controlled from bios so I can set it to minimum possible?
    thanks in advance

  • IMac fan, hardware test result

My iMac fan is always running.  I ran the hardware diagnostics and it gave me the following error code: 4SNS/1/40000000-9.000.  Any help?

Means you have a sensor gone bad. Get it repaired ASAP.

  • No temperature sensors found and no fan sensors found

Today when I opened my iMac, I was surprised that iStat found none of the temperature and fan sensors. Yesterday, everything was working well. Coincidentally, my mac was making a loud whirring sound that gets annoying. What should I do?

I would suggest resetting the SMC first by shutting down the machine, and then unplugged ALL cables from the iMac including the AC power and letting it sit for at least 30-60 seconds.
Plug the AC power, mouse and keyboard back in and turn it back on; see if the Fans are reported in iStat now.
Post what your various temps are once you get it back up.

  • IMAC fan is making a very loud noise

    Hello,
    Does somebody has similar problem?
I switch on the iMac and the fan is making too much noise that I can not hear the sound on the computer and the there is a lot of air coming out.
It is on all the time and I already open a SR with the apple care to repair it, I left the computer for a few days in the apple center but they do not fix it, apple do not care about it.
I have this problem since I bought the iMac.
Sometimes it is no making noise it is quite.
I read that some iMacs have this problem and Apple did not do anything to sort this problem, at least mine was not fixed.
I bought the Apple care but it is useless because Apple does not want to fix this problem, they said that they were not able to reproduce the problem.
Any help let me know, please.
    Thank you.
    Maria

It can be caused because of different reasons: a process which is eating your CPU, a defective fan, a problem with the SMC, etc. First, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 This program will allow you to diagnose problems with the hardware of your computer, although this may fail and it may not show anything. When you run Apple Hardware Test, make sure you tick the box to run an extended test. Finally, if you see an error at the end, copy it here and copy it in a piece of paper and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller, because it indicates that there's a hardware problem with your iMac and it must be fixed

  • IMac fan running all of the time

iMac fan running all of the time - how to stop. seems that after several hours iMac then shuts down on it's own accord.
Is there any help online - or take the 15 month old iMac to the shop ?

You can try an SMC reset, which can sometimes fix a goofy fan:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
What you're describing, however, sounds like a temperature sensor that's either acting correctly or it's not. I'd install iStat Pro from http://islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ , and monitor the temps and fan speeds.
I'd also run the Apple hardware test to see if it finds any obvious hardware issues. This Apple note tells how to run it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 (if you have Snow leopard, look down towards the bottom of the note for directions).
When the fan starts roaring, have you looked at your Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to see if there are any programs that are driving up CPU usage to high levels? That could contribute to an overheating situation.

I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?
