IMac Fans speed

Can i let my fans of my iMac late 2013 27Inch, 3.2GHz quad core, 1024VRAM, 8GB ram
to run at 2640RPM? because i am playing some games and it gets too hot, but i am also worried about the fans speed if they could handle it to work every second day for 5hours at that speed?

Default idle speed is the speed of the fan when the hardware doesn't require additional cooling. You can't go by these, since these default speeds are for this model only, but for my 21.5 iMac, the first screenshot shows the default fan speeds for three fans, and the second shows the speeds I use as a pre-set (from smcFan Control) in what I call the "hot" setting. I don't normally go much above these speeds, and if I do, it won't be for very long. But again, I have no idea what a realistic upper limit would be for your model. I just think that running the fan at 2K+ over long stretches, as you want to do, will shorten its life dramatically.
I try to run the fans only at the maximum needed for effective cooling. If I can't cool the computer sufficiently, and at reasonable fan speeds, I just sleep it. I also run a small fan at the back of the case, which helps keep the internal temps down.
You should get some kind of temperature monitor. This one, may or may not work in your model. It's free.

Hi guys , im a new mac user and i was wondering i downloaded istat pro

im not sure if those are good temps but liek some times after using for a couple hours while just webbrowsing and listening to music i feel the heat coming from like the screen and i touch it and its pretty hot!

Those look like normal fan speeds for the latest Macs. But you can use software that allows you to create different speed sets for different circumstances.
I use smcFanControl. The first time you start the app it reads your Mac's default fan speeds and creates a default set. But you can create more sets with increased speeds. I live in Monterrey, Mexico with no air conditioning, just fans. It has been around 40°C everyday for weeks on end, and lately hotter. So I have a Hot set where all speeds are ramped up 200 rpms over the default speeds. And I have a Really Hot set where they are all ramped up 200 rpms more over Hot. If I see the temps edging up I usually choose the next set and increase the rpms and that usually brings the temps down to normal. If I see the temps drop down below normal I back off a set on the rpms.
I think Handbrake is probably a bit CPU intensive, so it probably sends your temps up above their normal range when you are just surfing the net.
BTW, rpms are not temps, those are fan speeds. Revolutions per minute.

IMac fan speed increased after upgrading hdd.

iMac mid 2010 i3, I replaced stock hdd to a two terabyte western digital caviar green. After replacing the fan speed rapidly increased. I installed smc and still no resolution.

FIXED THE ISSUE.... This took a little time, but it was a simple fix. The LCD sensor that you have to disconnect from before removing the LCD was the issue. After receiving HIGH CPU fan speeds, I began looking at possible issues. First, I had [http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/12381/temperature-monitor|Temperature Monitor] Installed. I had all my sensors including the ambient air sensor reading. After I upgraded my HD to a SSD I started getting HIGH CPU fan speeds, but the HD and DVD fan speeds were fine. I looked at my Temperature Monitor and I noticed i had several Temperature Monitors not reading including the ambient Air Temperature (bare with me, these are steps to troubleshoot). After reseting the SMC and PRAM, still nothing. I shut down and disassembled my IMAC again. This time after i removed the LCD, I looked at the LCD cable that you must disconnect when removing the LCD and BAM, I saw the issue. The wires that connect to the Motherboard from the LCD Sensor, inherently like to lay across the screw hole the Bezel attaches to. I have a couple of pinched marked that exposed the wires and when I tighten the bezel down, it shorted the wires and caused the issue. I cut small pieces of electrical tape and covered the bare spots. When I reassembled the IMAC, i made sure that all my BEZEL screw holes were completely clear of any wires. Once back together, I plugged in the IMAC, waited 5 Seconds and turned it on. All is well. I feel this a majority of everyones issues when they take apart their IMACS and put them back together. THe Fan Control SOftware is good, but this was my solution that worked. Hope this helps.

Just bought an iMac and love it. The only problem is that the fan is really noisy and never stops. it is on full speed all the time. The room is cool and all I am doing is typing currently. It has been like this since the moment it came out of the box. Help I am going mad, the noise is ridiculous.

IMac (Late 2006) fan speed is 4600 rpm and nothing will change it

I just brought my iMac 24" 2.16GHz Late 2006 back from the Apple Store today and the ODD fan is running at 4600 rpm!!! The noise it generates is way too loud. It is comparable to the wind tunnel G4 I replaced. Any thoughts on how to lower the fan speed?
I took the iMac in on 12 Sep to repair microphone and video crashes. They repaired the mike and replaced the video card with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT. I picked it up on 3 Oct.
I have SMCFan and iStat Pro installed to monitor and adjust the minimum fan speed. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps (e.g., reset PRAM, Safe Boot, ran troubleshooting utilities, etc. to no avail.

I was recalling that Intel iMac users were doing the wrong SMC result three years ago (actually they were doing the SMU reset that was for the pre-Intel G-5 iMacs), and that you and I explained to them the correct way - which is of course what you recommended above:D
Nevertheless, since there is no further risk of causing the fans to race in this instance, I would myself do the wrong SMC reset method, and if it does not work, turn right around and do it the way Apple recommends. This still might result in correcting the problem.
By the way, it was widely reported three years ago that the SMC reset was frequently not successful on the first attempt, so the alternative is to try this harmless procedure at least several times before giving up on it.

What are the default fan speeds for a 24" iMac 2.8 GHz?
Also, what are the 'normal' temperatures for this computer?

24" iMac 2.4GHz Fan Speed

Hi,
I recently purchased a 24" Intel iMac 2.4GHz. Forunately I haven't experienced any crashing or freezing problems like some users have, but what I have noticed is that the fan(s) seem to speed up quite significantly for no apparent reason when the machine is idle.
When the computer is doing absolutely nothing sitting at 32 degrees, the fans speed increases from around 1200rpm up to about 3300rpm.
Can anybody tell me if this is normal for the 24" iMacs? I used to own a previous revision 20" iMac and I hardly ever heard the fans kick in. It wouldn't normally bother me, but the fact that it makes a lot of noise is kind of annoying.
I have updated to 1.1 with no joy. Currently I am using iStat Pro via Dashboard to read my system performace.

My Hard Drive fan is running 5000-5500rpm all the time.
I've followed the instructions for resetting the SMC:

But this did not help. It seemed to get progressively worse. At first going full speed only occasionally, then after around an hour of use, then less. As of tonight it comes on when I turn on the machine (after being unplugged for several minutes) and stays on at the >5000rpm speeds.

Ideal fan speeds for a 20" iMac

I have a mid 2007 2 GHZ 20" Intel iMac, I recently had some unexpected shut down issues which I traced to a defective optical drive fan. I have SMC fan control loaded and it tells me that the DVD fan went off-on-off-on, I also ran an extended hardware test and that confirmed the bad fan, I replaced the fan and that was the end of my problems. However, I have been fooling with the fan speeds and now I am wondering what the ideal speeds for all three fans in my machine are? Can anyone help?

I think you have to balance the need to run cooler against running the fans so fast you wear out the motors quickly. In general, it's probably best, at least for prolonged periods, not to run them any higher than maybe ~400 rpms above the defaults. But that's just my own guess. I don't have any statistics on what fan speeds are ideal for attaining that balance.
Then again, fans are much cheaper to replace than drives, logic boards, or power supplies.
I have maybe 5 or 6 pre-sets, including the defaults. This is one setting I often use in summer, but I may sometimes go a bit higher in very hot weather. I also have a fan running at the back, which helps keep the internal temps lower and allows me to run the internal fans slower than I would otherwise. In extremely hot weather, it's pointless to blow hot air around faster. When it's like that I sleep the computer more often.

yes, I know, this kind of question has passed before...
In order to eliminate everything which could cause my iMac to shut down itself after a while running, I really would be pleased to get a clear answer on this one. It seems more and more that it shuts itself down when it's on "regime" temp., if you know what I mean.
Anyway is there anybody out there who can say which speeds are normal (compared to intensive/not intensive use of your mac)? @ which temps?
On my iMac they are ALWAYS the same (even @ cold start), even if you see the temps going up.
I think that's weird: you should expect them to go up once in a while, no? Especially when it's getting "on temperature".
CPU fan: 1198 to 1202 rpm
Hard Drive: 1598 to 1602 rpm
Optical drive: 798 to 900 rpm
What speeds do your iMac fans run?

2011 i7 iMac optical drive fan speed

Can aynone confirm whether the deafult speed for the optical diive fan on 2011 i7 iMacs is 1150 RPM, i.e. 150 RPM faster than the 1000 RPM for 2009 / 2010 iMacs?

I am noticing the optical fan running quite high. And this is with normal usage. Web surfing, file manager lookups, nothing much else. However, I notice the optical fan speed climbing and getting louder. It will get up to approx. 5000rpms. This i can confirm because I am running hardware monitor and this is what is is showing.
So my question is this. Are the iMacs supposed to be relatively quiet for normal processing? When I say quiet, quiet so that you cannot hear the fans? I can understand a graphics intensive/watching movie causing them to get louder but other than that should they not be relatively noiseless?
Maybe some of you techies out there can reply with telling me what an iMac should be running at. (wrt fan speeds/temps). I would like to know how far off the norm my iMac is.

What is normal fan speed & temperature? (2009 iMac)

I recently bought a 27" iMac used, and I noticed today that the fans seem to run fast even when just looking at articles without video, which I found odd.
Are the below stats normal? I've noticed the Optical Drive fan at around 3300rpm at times.

If these temps are in Celsius, they seem somewhat high to me.
The GPU and GPU diode seem unusually hot to me.
I have the same model IMac as you and purchased used in 2011, my initial temps weren't as high as yours, but I was still uncomfortable with how hot it was running.
I suspect a lot of dust dirt and lint may have built up inside of your iMac.
SInce you cannot break into the iMac to clean out the dust and dirt, I recommend the use of a vacuum cleaner with a hose and crevice tool attachment to suck, instead of blowing, the dirt out of your Mac.
DO NOT USE CANS OF COMPRESSED AIR!!!!!
You will only be pushing the dust, dirt and lint further into the iMac
Power down your iMac, disconnect the power and all your connected peripheral devices, lay your iMac screen down on a soft cloth of heavy toweling and using the vacuum's crevice tool(avoid using the vacuum's brush attachments as this may cause an electrical static discharge issue) and lightly (to avoid scratching your iMac's finish) vacuum out the vents underneath the display. Also, unscrew the RAM compartment cover and vacuum the dust out of the RAM area. Vacuum the long upper vent the is across the back of your iMac. Vacuum out the CD/DVD slot and SD slot. Vacuum out all of the various connection ports on the of your Mac including the vent hole and grille that is visible through the iMac's support stand. Once done, re-setup and reconnect everything and power up your iMac and see if the temps go down.
If no joy in getting the temps down, call an Apple Store or Apple Authorised seller/repair/service center and ask about if they do interior cleaning of IMacs and its cost and schedule an appointment to get your Mac clean and free of interior lint and dust.
If, after a good clean out, you are still uncomfortable with the normal operating temps, as I am, you can do one and/or two things.
The easiest and quickest solution is to run a small desktop fan from behind the iMac and let the fan blow air on the backside aluminum panel to cool down your iMac.
The next thing you can try and use (and you'll get a lot of subjective criticism from others here on what I am about to advise) is to download a software fan controller app, like SMC Fan Control, and manually set all of your iMac's fans RPMs to a speed which gets the temps to a more comfortable level without revving the fans too high, which can act as an internal vacuum, sucking in quicker, more dust, lint and dirt inside your newly cleaned out iMac.
I use a fan control app and do not set the RPMs for any of the fans any higher than 1500-1600 RPMs (the 2009 IMac fans usually default at 1100-1200 RPMs, so I only bring them up enough to keep the highest component temps below 60-65 degrees C.

Bad noise/ fan speed problem with Rev B iMac

Like a lot of other people, I'm having problems with ridiculous fan noise. I've read through the forum and tried the following (with no success):
1) Reset SMU (x2)
2) Ran Maintenance Scripts. (x2)
3) Removed the back and blew dust from fans, ports, etc.
The processor is set to automatic. The problem occurs whether or not I have any peripherals plugged in. I get the noise/rpms when all I have running is Safari and XRG.
On certain websites, the CPU fan will climb to 5600, CPU temp to 79C, with CPU usage at 80-90%.
Does this sound like a logic board problem? Something else, possibly?
Basically, I'm trying to cover all of my bases before I get on the phone with AppleCare. I'd like to try to keep that as short as possible. Thanks in advance for any help/comments.

Just an FYI. During my iMacs motherboard replacements (3) I was never asked for a case number once. I spent hours on the phone with Applecare when in reality I already new I had a hardware problem and if I would have just taken it in it would have been fixed quicker. The third time I took my iMac G5 in for service the local tech told me to call up Applecare (3rd time then call) and ask for a replacement stating that if they need to call me he would explain that I had a lemon. In everyone of the three bad motherboards the fans spun out of control so I have more experience than I would prefer on this subject. They did step up and as you can see in my profile I have a new Intel iMac courtesy of Apple.

IMac (early 2009), 3.06 GHz, ATI 4850 - fan speed and temperature questions

Well, so I downloaded and installed Temperature Monitor and iMac Fan Control - mainly for observational purposes and not for toying around with the fan speeds and I've got some questions. Mind you, I haven't tampered at all with the fan speed settings, just installed Fan Control. Here are my readings (while browsing the internet with Safari and doing a chat via iChat):
Fan Speeds:
CPU fan (desired) 1300 RPM / (current) 1530 RPM
HD fan (desired) 2100 RPM / (current) 2099 RPM
DVD fan (desired) 1300 / 1298 RPM
Temperatures:
CPU Heatsink: 92°F
Internal HD: 108°F
Internal DVD: 95°F
GPU Heatsink: 107°F
Are these, under the circumstances, normal readings?

Your welcome and no problem. I would say only the Apple engineers can tell you why the fans are set to those speeds however my best guess is the obvious they found those speeds the closest to keeping the temps at an optimum operating temperature. I found when I'm doing graphics intensive work my machine heats up but quickly cools down when I'm done.

What's normal range temperature and fan speed for a 27" iMac?

I have a new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GBs ram, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB.
Smc fan control reads up to about 131°F and around 1200rpm fan. Is this within normal range? At what point should I be worried?

1200 rpm is the minimum fan speed according to iStat Menus and other sources. If your fans are at the minimum that means your system is not concerned about the temperature. On my system currently the fans are at minimum (1199rpm) and the temperature is 104°F. The room ambient temperature is 74°F. Your system looks normal to me. By the way, my system is also a 27-inch late 2013 iMac with the 3.5ghz I7 CPU. The Haswell CPUs are very efficient and low power.
