IMac Finder crawling, unusable even after troubleshooting. help!

Torturously slow Finder in my Intel iMac 2.16ghz OS 10.4.11.
It can take it over a minute to load basic Finder windows. It can take five minutes to get from command- print to actually printing a photo from iPhoto, running the Spinning Beachball of Death for a minute or two each time something is clicked (drop-down menu, etc). Even trying to scroll, or move a window, brings up SBOD for interminable periods before it responds. Spotlight is slow and unreliable. Very slow to start up, very slow to log in. Again, SBOD between all actions. It's been gradually more slow over a couple months, but now it suddenly became unusable.
Safe Boot doesn't change it at all.
Plenty of free HD space and RAM, those aren't an issue.
What i have done, all ineffective:
• run Repair Permissions and Disk Utility (First Aid). No problems found.
• tossed Finder prefs and sidebar prefs
• tried Safe Boot. NO CHANGE whatsoever.
• tried another user account. It was faster in some tests i did, such as iPhoto operations, but that user has only a fraction of the files. And there were still random inexplicable Finder slowdowns while loading Finder windows etc., slow to quit apps, etc... just not as bad as in my User.
• removed all startup items from my login, which was all 3rd-party stuff.
• since slowdowns seem to have started with a Lexmark wireless-network printer install a few months ago, i trashed everything i could find having to do with lexmark (the printer was junk and i got rid of it within 6 weeks anyway).
• I updated the Wacom Tablet driver that i know was outdated (however, i don't have the tablet hooked up).
• i disconnected off all non-essential peripherals- everything except the keyboard ( a MacAlley, with an apple mouse) and the DSL modem.
• Tried Safe Boot again after all of above. No change.
i watched Activity Monitor. Very little CPU usage shown at any given time. However, during the slowdowns, Monitor shows "not responding" for relevant applications i've tried to do something in, including Finder and also something called "System UI Server". Eventually, the app responds and the "not responding" goes away in activity monitor.
other details that may be relevant:
• this iMac sometimes freezes up with what looks like a logic board/graphics chip problem... suddenly video goes awry and clusters a lot of fragmented graphics at top of screen, with rest of screen black. The only way to recover is a hard shutdown, either by holding the power button down or unplugging it.
I really don't want to have to re-install the OS if not necessary, as my install disk is 10.4.3 and i'd have to re-update it all the way to 10.4.11 (i have found i have to do a couple intermediate combo updates to avoid problems).
Do y'all think this is an OS problem, a hardware problem, or what?
Suggestions of what to do now?
PS, urgent, cuz i need to print (or at least export to a flash drive, to move to my iBook) a bunch of images i need for a studio tour.... tomorrow!

What if i boot this clone on my laptop (a G4 iBook with the same amount of RAM) and see how it runs?
Intel iMac 2.16ghz, iBook G4 1.3ghz
Won't work, unfortunately. The clone carries an Intel-specific version of Tiger, which won't run on your PPC iBook.
And if i boot from the clone on the iMac and it runs fine (or, at least, as it was running when the backup was made), that would specifically incriminate the iMac's hard drive, not its other hardware, wouldn't it?
Yes, and so potentially a good diagnostic tool, but I'm not sure it would be totally safe. If the problem is instead bad RAM in the iMac, and you ran the clone from there, I think there would be a chance that the clone could become corrupted. You would then lose your only backup.
It would be nice if there were an "extra" external drive available. That way you could use the iBook to make a second identical "test" clone on it, using your current iMac clone as the source. You could then boot the iMac from the 2nd clone as you proposed, without fear of losing your only backup.
Regarding your install DVD(s):
Intel iMac 2.16ghz OS 10.4.11.
This machine came with grey machine-specific DVDs, I believe 10.4.7 or later.
All i have is my 10.4.3 full retail install DVD.
That is PPC specific, as well as being an earlier Tiger version than the one that came with your machine. It will not re-install Tiger on your Intel iMac.
Disk Utility says HD has no problems (run booted from DVD).
I'm surprised at this. I didn't think an Intel mac would boot from a retail Tiger DVD even just to run Disk Utility.
I'd suggest obtaining the original install disks for your iMac even if you eventually install Leopard. They contain the Apple Hardware Test, and also the original bundled software set, should you ever need to re-install these. Unlike retail DVDs, they should be inexpensive - call Apple and ask; have your serial number available.

pages file document went missing after force quit. cant find it anywhere even after using recovering files softwares. HELP
i was working on a document with pages. while transferring files from USB, the 'pinball' thing popped up for the longest time which lead me to force quit the document. the document had been saved before quitting. however, my macbook starts to reboot, and after rebooting that specific file is missing. Before it quit, it says that the file is locked and asked me to create a duplicate, which i clicked yes to.

    Hi,
just to say that while waiting for a help
I decided to go back from zero and moved to a second network (thanks i got some few computers available for my tests ) and this time i run in another trouble wich is the subject of a former post (with no reply...) <<HELP!! "Checksum failed" & "Integrity check on decrypted field failed ">>
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=791804&messageID=9468957#9468957
Seems this always just leads us to problems...
Strange Sun Java Security Team just won't do anything to help us deploy quite easily on one of the most widely-spread platform ( despite we don't like them that much it's MS servers (2000 and 2003) )
Anyway if one could help... on one of the two issues Thanks

  • Spotlight completely broken even after troubleshooting

Ok , i must say i HATE Spotlight. I always have, mainly because it never has worked fast enough for me, and has been problematic since day one.
Having said that I am still forced to use it to find things on my system but now it's completely broken. When I type in the Spotlight window, it hangs even after the first letter, like it usually does, but now it has added a new trick in that it refuses to find anything at all.
Fine. I'll force OSX to rebuild the database.
Go into terminal, type in the appropriate command that 100 billion posts in discussion say to do, and I get nothing. It does nothing. No rebuild. Nothing. I check Activity monitor to see if it's working. Nothing. This is also after I've trashed the prefs and Spotlight refuses to even build a new prefs file.
So, I go to System prefs, open the Spotlight tab, and try to drag my volume to the privacy window to get it to dump the dbase. The volume never shows up. Try adding it using the button. Nothing.
I trashed the Finder prefs too, and at least that fixed the problem with Finder locking up every time I did a Get Info on a file, but didn't help Spotlight at all.
One other minor good thing is, once I trashed the Spotlight prefs, at least now my system will reboot in under 5 minutes time, since I'm sure that Spotlight was the cause of that problem as well.
Dear Apple. Spotlight *****. In the meantime can someone offer other suggestions BESIDES reinstalling Tiger. Thanks.

    Bryan,
I don't know about you but re-installing the entire OS should only be a desperate last measure. I haven't done it in years, and hope never to have to, since it would require at least a full day of my time, what with finding all the upgrades (on a dialup connection !!!), installing them, and then re- inputting all my data into the various places where it's needed. And yet that's what we now regularly find TIger users advised to do, just because of one dumb thing: Spotlight. And even if you DO go down this route and re-install Tiger, it's a sure bet something will go wrong again with Spotlight anyway.
ONe of the simplest, quickest things any computer user needs to do is find a file, any file, fast, and then get on with whatever it was they needed the file for. Apple seems to think we find the process so fascinating that we could spend the whole day doing it.
Try Easyfind instead of Spotlight. It's far from ideal but as things stand with the Mac OS, it's the only way to find your files.
You can download it from here
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
Oh, BTW, did you know that in a desperate attempt to make Spotlight work, Apple decided that it won't index everything?
I hope Easyfind makes your life a little better

  • Photos Missing Even After Rebuild - Help!!!

My iMac crashed after a software update around 10.6.8. This machine is still running 10.6.8.
I had to restore the entire system from Time Capsule.
I am now missing hundreds, if not thousands of photos, from my library of about 35,000 images. All I get is an exclamation mark.
I have rebuilt the library using iPhoto Library Manager and it lists a bunch of images and videos that it can't find.
I can see the meta data from the missing photos (camera, f-stop, iso, etc) but can't see the images as thumbnails or even in the "edit" menu.
I upgraded to iPhoto 11 to see if that would help.
I would be SUPER GRATEFUL for any help! Since this is my Time Capsule back-up that has the corrupt files, I don't have a back-up of the back-up (I WILL NEXT TIME!).

Give the following a try to see if the Masters folder in your problem library contains all of your files even though they are not being recognized by iPhoto:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
If this brings back all of your photos you can start using it but still try other fixes on your current library in hopes of recovering metadata and projects.

  • Finder crashes/quits even after reinstall!

Does anyone have and idea why the finder would continually crash when scrolling through files (images) and even sometimes when I'm using programs?
I have taken my G5 in to have it looked at, but they found nothing wrong and suggested that if it persisted, to just do a clean re-install, which I have done now 3 times! And it is still doing it! I have gone through other post here, and done a few of the suggestions to no avail.
Another thing is that all of my programs keep crashing.. even techtool.
I'm at my wits end!! Can any one help..
    Thanks

Thank you for your response, macjack
In order to find out if I could recreate the problem after I did "erase and install", I had to plug my external drive in and copy over files, in order to do a long scroll (generally the finder would crash when I would get close to the bottom while scrolling 100+ images) However I have hooked the same hardrive up to my laptop and my G4 without any problems.
I don't quite know what "zero out on the hard drive" means, can you elaborate?.. no I have not run hardware test myself - but I took it in to my local apple service place, and they could not find anything wrong with the computer hardware.
    thanx

  • Finder wont repond, even after i relaunch it

I recently replaced my cracked screen by myself using the powerbookmedic website. The computer runs successfully, but Finder won't respond when I click it. I've tried relaunching it and after a few seconds all I get is the spinning umbrella. I've tried relaunching over and over, and the furthest I get is that my desktop items will appear, but I can't click them and Finder still won't respond, so I relaunch it again and they disappear. I've tried restarting it over and over during the few seconds after I relaunch Finder. I've tried shutting it down completely and even taking it apart again to see if I missed a plug or anything, and everything is where it is supposed to be. I think I need to reboot, but I need to save my pictures and docs, but I don't know how without using Finder..

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • IMac screen is frozen even after re-starting several times.

My iMac screen is frozen. I have used the alt-command-esc and can get the Force Quite box to come up but the box buttons are unresponsive. I have also alt-command and powered off and shift-key powered off (while holding for several seconds). When I turn the computer back on, it will boot up and begin with it's usual pop-up screens (APC PowerChute & Adobe Updater) which are currently unresponsive and just stay on the screen. I can run my mouse over the deck eyecons and it still tells the names of each, but nothing happens when I click on any of them. Same thing with any desktop eyecons and toolbars. Any suggestions on how to unfreeze the screen when I can't seem to be able to do anything?

  • Stuck at "Finding Purchased Items" even after update and reboot

I have been unable to sync my iPad for several weeks. Itunes gets to "Find Purchased Items" then hangs. I've left it running overnight, but still nothing. I updated the software to the latest version (the one that allows sharing) and still nothing. Rebooted and still nothing. I know iTunes is completely frozen because I can't even return to it in Explorer (i'm using the Windows version).
What can I do to be able to start syncing my iPad again? It seems like ITunes is really becoming an Achilles Heel for Apple products.
Any help is much appreciated since I've bought several new apps and can't install ANY of them.

I was having the same problem on the iPad 1.  I am on the latest iOS (5.1.1) and the latest Lion (10.7.4) and latest iTunes 10.6.1 (7).
Tried to sync for the first time in months.  whenever it gets to 3 of 7 "finding purchases," iTunes completely hangs and I have to force quit.
I deleted iBooks on the iPad and then right clicked on the iPad in iTunes and did a BACKUP (option is set to backup to iCloud btw).
Once this was complete it sat on "WAITING TO APPLY CHANGES", for almost an hour.. eventually i was impatient, and tried an option change, and hit apply and it got past the screen and fixed it all.
Once all this was done, it was backing up/synching etc. very quickly.
Hope that helps anyone else who got stuck more recently than the thread origin!

  • Intel iMac 17"s slow - even after SU and firmware update

Just got 3 Intel iMacs (w/512MB RAM) to upgrade 3 users at my company, and have found basic startup (and later, opening apps) to be cripplingly slow. I have already:
    Run Software Update;
    Run the EFI Firmware update;
    Repaired permissions;
Run Repair Disk vis "fsck -fy" from the console...
The only things I have not messed with are the USB peripherals.
    Any ideas?

If you have the 17" iMacs with the 1.83 GHz chip you don't really even have 512MB of RAM. That model shares RAM with the video chip, which uses a minimum of 80 MB. Leaving only 432 MB, at most, for the Mac OS and any software you are running.
If you are seeing the spinning beachball of death you don't have enough physical RAM and the Mac is using virtual memory and constantly accessing the hard drive. You won't be happy until you have a minimum of 1 GB.
    Get more RAM.

    Hi Ellenred,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you have already done some great troubleshooting. Did you remove not only iTunes but all of its components in Windows as well when you reinstalled? When you remove and reinstall iTunes, all components must be removed in order to ensure it works properly when reinstalled. If you have already done this, please let me know. If you need to go through this process please use the information provided in the articles below.
I am not sure what version of Windows you have so I will include articles for all versions starting with XP and up.

  • I cannot permanantly remove an add-on, even after troubleshooting.

I have been having difficulty deleting an add-on that I did not install in the first place. It is called "Plus-HD-1.2 0.93.199", and claims to be an extension that automatically sets YouTube videos to HD. It does not do that, and instead waits in stasis for a while and then turns random couplings of words into green links to who-knows where (I have not clicked on any in order to further prevent other problems). I figured out it was this add-on specifically by noting that I never installed it, combined with the fact the green links stopped after I disabled it.
I have tried all of the troubleshooting steps listed in the main sections devoted to clearing unwanted add-ons, as well as using my antivirus browser cleanup and completing a system restore to the furthest possible point. The only thing I have yet to do is reset my Firefox browser to original settings. No matter what I do, the add-on bypasses the blocking of unwanted add-ons, reinstalls itself, and turns on after every shutdown. I know that I was not the one to install it, because if I want a YouTube video set to HD, I set it to HD myself.
Please, what do I do to get rid of this? Is this a problem for anyone else?

Thank you very much! That seemed to do the trick.
