IMac: first won't turn on now fans won't stop

Hello,
My mother bought an iMac a year and a half ago. Today her imac wouldn't turn on, so I guided her over the phone on how to reset the SMC and the PRAM.
Now the iMac turns on and works apparently fine, but the fans are wild crazy.. working at max revs.
Since I'm away I can't check much of the hard itself so I'm working blind here, just what I can do thru remote control.
I installed Fan Control and see that apparently the heat sensors and fan sensors aren't working, because they show 0ºC and the fans at -1 rpm.
Any ideas I can try software-based?
I'd be quite frustrated to have my mom's imac die after just 18 months, specially since it took me YEARS to convince her to switch to macs. And it's not like she uses it a lot, maybe a few hours every day, and just for light internet browsing or using ms office.
thanks

have you tried this before resetting the SMC? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1433
If not it still doesn't work, it's not software, it's hardware. to confirm it's hardware, have her start up from the boot CD and see what the fans do. I hope your mom's imac gets fixed (hard to do when you're not even there)

A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.

  • IMac won't turn on and fans come on right when plugged in

An iMac I have won't turn on but the fan runs. I don't even have to turn it on, I just plug it in and they go on. When I press the power button nothing, but the fan still runs. I have to unplug it to stop them.
Does anybody know anything I can try to see if I can get it working again?
    Thanks.

You may be able to see if the situation changes somewhat by trying a
reset of the power management unit, via a button hidden in a location
beneath the iMac (G4) base plate. See info in the following page links:
    • Resetting the iMac (Flat Panel - G4) Power Management Unit (PMU)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
    • How to reset PRAM and NVRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Before attempting to perform either reset, read through each of the
pages to see what they have in mind; could be a PRAM reset may
do OK. Or both may lead one to consider entirely different actions.
If PMU button is held too long an otherwise healthy PRAM battery may
have a shortened life; or a weak old battery may already be dead. The
battery (a 1/2AA 3.6V Lithium cell) keeps the system settings current.
There is a possibility the unit may have some other hardware issues, too.
Troubleshooting one of these without an official service manual or trained
iMac G4 technician (is there an antique iMac doctor in the house?) can be
a tedious process; as the official tech manual will refer to replacement of
original parts with known-good official ones, as part of an extensive repair.
After the PMU is reset, perhaps it may boot up; or may boot from an install
DVD or CD. An original Apple Hardware Test for the computer may be of
some help in general diagnosis; but even bad hard drives can pass, at times.
Is there any other indication of the computer trying to run, other than Fan?
That's hard enough to hear much else inside the case, with the fan running.
(There is only the single fan in the top of the housing; to pull air up/out.)
Which specific iMac G4 build version do you have? (700/800/1.0 or 1.25)
There is an iMac take-apart page, if you decide to go into it for the duration.

  • IMac 21.5inch, (LION) firmware update, now computer won't turn on at all

Received an automatic update window, hit the install and restart button, screen went grey, blue line filled in, computer shut down and i thought it was restarting, but then nothing happened and now it won't turn on AT ALL.

You could try an SMC reset:
    SMC Reset
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and disconnect attached devices.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • IBook won't turn on, but fan is running

Okay, I have an iBook w/a recalled battery, which I have already requested. I am waiting for that to come in. Upon the suggestion of the apple website, I have removed my bad battery and am running my laptop solely from the a/c adapter. However, now my comp. won't turn on. The fan is running, but nothing else is happening. Also, I have followed the advice of apple's tech support link, but that has not done any good. Per their advise, I put in the Software Install and Restore disc, and now I can't get it to eject. I need help asap, if anyone has any anwers. Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
From the Apple Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting slot load drives:
    The drive doesn't eject discs
If the drive ejects discs slowly or appears to be struggling, insert and eject a disc several times.
If the drive does not eject discs, press the F12 key. Holding down the trackpad button during startup should also eject a disc.
Reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) and/or the Power Manager (PMU). PMU reset instructions for iBook G4/PowerBook G4.
If the disc still does not eject, contact Apple to arrange for service.
    I hope something there helps.

  • Upgraded eMac, now fan won't work

    Hello,
I just upgraded my son's eMac - put in 1GB RAM, Pioneer DVD-R drive and 320 GB hard drive.
All the upgrades work just fine (and he is very happy), but now the fan won't work. I've checked and double-checked the connections - there were two connections that I've unplugged and plugged in three times. The fan can spin if I flick it, so it is not impeded in any way.
    Any ideas?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes, the fan was operating fine because it was so loud you couldn't miss it.
I appreciate Roam's comments, but my electrical engineering background is spotty. I understand that it is either the fan or the connection to the fan, but I have not the tools nor the knowledge to connect a battery to see if the connection is good.
What I can't figure out is what went wrong. There are only two connections coming from the fan unit, and one is actually the power supply that goes to the electrical plug (which is part of the fan unit). That one is obviously working fine because the computer powers up. The other one is this simple looking small snap-in connector that seems like a total no-brainer to attach. It's not something that could even easily get bent or anything.
I'm obviously missing something important, or the fan picked a really weird time to stop working.
For now he's shutting the computer down when it feels hot. I'm sure that's not a good solution.

My Ipad won't turn on, tried a reset but still nothing, any ideas??

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • My ipad is stuck inbetween on and off.  The screen is black with the white apple in the middle.  It won't turn off and it won't come on.  anyone know what is wrong?

My ipad is stuck inbetween on and off.  The screen is black with the white apple in the middle of the screen.  It won't turn off and won't come completely on.  Anyone know what is wrong?

See if this lets the iPad start up.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • My iTouch 4th Gen won't turn on. It won't charge. I tried doing the "home" + "power/sleep" button. And before my itouch shuts off, it's battery power level is low.

My itouch won't turn on, i tried the "home" +  "power button and still no response from the itouch. also i know that my battery was low when it turned off. I tried charging it on my desktop or in my usb charger. still no response from my itouch. it is 4th Gen, it has the latest software and it is only two months old.

Try letting it charge for a little while longer.  Then try another hard reset.  Only this time hold those two buttons together anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute.  Any luck there?
Otherwise, see the Will not power on section of this Apple support document.

  • My imac g5 from 2004 crashed, and now it won't turn on. Help?

Not much else to say. My i-mac G5 which I bought in 2004 started crashing ocassionally a while back. It would always restart, but then the power button started not working. I would sometimes have to push the button many times to get it to start. Am I f**ked?

Try opening the case and see if the power button contact is properly aligned.  Once the case is open, inspect for bulging or leaking capacitors.
    You can also run
    Disk Utility
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot and repair perm issions.
