IMac freeze, all programs
Hello,
First post here, but then again its my first problem with my mac since 9months
Everything worked fine till 4 hours ago. Imac froze while I was browsing ebay, I had to do a hard reset with the powerbutton.
If I open safari now it crashes/freezes instant and it gives me the color wheel instead of my mouse pointer. It doesn't go away and I can not do anything else but a hard reset over and over.
I already did a hardware test from the dvd, no problems found.
I already did the PRAM/NVRAM reset, nothing changed
I already did a disk check in Disk Utility, (wich doesn't crash =/)giving me no errors or problems.
I installed the 1.0 update from the website that should fix functionallity problems, nothing changed.
edit: I now did a check with Techtool Deluxe, no problems found also
What to do now?

Try Safari maintenance.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.

Repair disk permissions:
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Since updating to OS X Mavericks, my iMac freezes multiple times per day. This never happend before. I happens in mail, safari, outlook, you name it. I can move my mouse, but I can't select or do anything until I power down and back on. Any idea's?

Lion 10.7.2 iMac freezing all the time
Hi, I am running a 24" 2008 Imac as follows:
3.06GHz Intel Core 1 Duo
4GB 800Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 800 GS 512MB
I had no problems with Snow Leopard, or the original install of Lion, and have recently updated to 10.7.2. All software updates are up to date.
Since last Friday, the iMac is constantly suffering from freezing, sometimes 6 or 7 times in an hour, making it virtually unusable. It can stay up for an hour or so, but sometimes only minutes. Once it has crashed once, subsequent crashes seem more frequent.
I took it to the local apple store last week, it stayed up for a whole hour and a half, whilst they ran tests and checks and found nothing wrong with it! As soon as I got it home and connected it up, it started crashing again.
I have eliminated all my local peripherals (bluetooth keyboard, mouse, trackpad, timemachine, LAN etc) by disconnecting them all one at a time, but it still crashes.
I have verified and repaired disk permissions, and also restored to a time macine backup from 5 days before it started crashing, but still have the same problem.
The iMac seems to work fine in safe mode (as I type this).
From various reading I have done, Lion freezing seems to be a common issue but I can't seem to find a thread with exactly the same issues as mine or with any firm suggestions for a resolution. Basically, the system becomes unresponsive (keyboard, mouse etc) then comes back to life for a few seconds before the screen just going completely blank, and then requires a hardware on/off reboot.
It crashes most repeatably when using video e.g. Youtube, but also crashes in Safari,Chrome,Aperture and Itunes. It does seem that it may be video related with the nvidia card, as the error message I always get before the system panic is as below:

I tried to install the previous version of Lion, but it wont let me as I have a later version installed. Therefore, I am thinking of going back to snow leopard. Is it ok to do this from the original install DVD, then apply the software updates, or is this likely to cause more problems installing it over Lion? If I do this, will I still be able to re-install Lion at a later date, and would the itunes store remember that I had already paid (I presume so if this is recorded against my apple id?)
Any help, however small, would be appreciated as it is very frustrating after having a reliable system for the last three years!Your points match mine pretty well,though here are some thoughts:
1. I thought about this theory myself this morning (iTunes possibly causing more issues), but I haven't been able to verify it.
2. When I set up a new user it seemed better for a while, but the issue croppped back up. Yesterday I fully wiped the machine and reinstalled from scratch. I did not reimport my user from TimeMachine, but the problem has come back. My thinking was that I might have some really old software or prefs hanging around causing the issue. No dice.
3. This is my current theory of the issue, so my next step will be to pull the RAM from Crucial and see how the system behves. IF that doesn't eliminate the problem, I'll pull the factory installed RAM and replace it with the 3rd party RAM. The odd thing is how many people seem to have similar issues - I know two personally, and have seen several posts on forums. I think the most common point for this happening was the 10.7.2 update, which would point to software as the culprit.
4. That matches my experience.
My hope is that this will be repaired in the forthcoming 10.7.3 release (current production version is 10.7.2), but otuside of what I noted above, I'm at a loss. -
Every 2 hours or so all my programs/finder freeze and then crash. Force quit dosen't work and the only way to sort it out it to turn my mac off and on again. Then 2 hours later the whole thing happens again....
I have recently upgraded to 10.5.4 via the combo installer form Apple's website. I have run the disk permissions and no problems where found.
Can anyone help? or has anyone has this problem?

Can you look in Console.app and see if there's something in system.log or console.log that points to what's causing these freezes? -
Need help!...mi imac freezing all day
If some one can help me out, mi imac has been freezing like two weeks ago when I am doing normal tasks like messenger, safari and itunes it mostly happens when i go to expose then it freezes mouse response but when itunes working the song starts like pausing and then no sound is emited...I would be gratefull please help me!

Then also your system could be running low on ram, to run Leopard and a couple of other large Applications like Safari and iTunes my system uses well over 1GB of ram. Use the Activity Monitor to find out if you are running low on Free and Inactive memory!

I had to restore my iMac from Time Machine. After the restoration all programs are functioning except my Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium. When I start any program in the suite the error message, "Licensing for this product has stopped working." I restarted the computer and tried again to run Photoshop and the same error message appeared. The message was followed by a message that stated that I needed to contact Adobe technical support and mention Error: 150.30. I need Adobe technical support to provide me a solution for my problem so I can continue using my Adobe products installed on my computer.
Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite. You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

my iMac freezes or pauses intermittantly - usually for 2 or 3 seconds - no matter what program is running - sometimes just touching a menu to get a drop down will take several seconds - if playing music on iTunes or Spotify the music will pause for several seconds - it is not internet related because it happens when working off line - its become a major annoyance in using the compuetr - really slows it down - any suggestions?

In order to reliably save the info and be able to restore at a later date, you would need to use his AppleID.
Switch to it on iTunes, back the iPad up and confirm the backup exists (Preferences / Devices), then switch to yours, wipe the iPad and start afresh. Will also wipe his apps, as they are tied to the AppleID as well. -
Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!
Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?" -
IMac Freezing - No video glitch, but unresponsive
Good morning all,
In the past week or so, I've started to have problems with my iMac freezing. This has occurred while using iChat, playing World of Warcraft and while using Safari (not all at once).
In short, the video display seems to freeze. I can still hear audio (ie. the other person on iChat speaking), but everything else in non-responsive. The keyboard does not respond and I cannot ALT-Tab or open any other programs. My only recourse is to manually turn off the computer and try again.
It's usually a guaranteed failure when opening up Warcraft. About 4 seconds after the program has opened, the computer freezes.
I've searched the forums and have come across several threads that involve some sort of graphical glitch, from which I do not suffer. That being said, I thought a new thread might be appropriate.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have vacuumed the air vents, installed smcFan Control (great to manual adjust fan speeds on all 3 internal fans), re-installed Snow Leopard & gone through copious hours as all the software updates each time I've re-installed, and I run the disc doctor program. It started happening around the time Steve Jobs said Apple would no longer use Flash. I thought it a Flash issue since it only has to do with the playback of video. Today I discovered that clips I downloaded yesterday were also freezing in my desktop Picasa. Meaning it's not Final Cut, or Picasa, and unlikely my video card as all videos streamed from the NET (on YouTube, etc) play fine, and in fact my videos that freeze on my iMac when uploaded to YouTube or Facebook play fine.
I am enormously and thoroughly frustrated, as you can imagine. I had 15 clips from the G20 Protest March yesterday and was not able to make an adequate video to upload out of them because the video keeps freezing, and losing synch with the audio - and every time you try to play it, it freezes in a different spot!!
Horrendous problem.
Today, then, following advice in this thread, I will try re-installing back an update or so on OSX - I'm using 10.6.4, and perhaps need to go backwards?
This is an awful problem and I am surprised Apple hasn't addressed it. Perhaps it only relates to computers a few years old?

The only program I installed is Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition, which I need. I have one free app downloaded, Sketchbook Pro Express, which I need. My iMac freezes a lot, sometimes when I start it up, sometimes when I am working stuff, sometimes when I am on the internet. I have turned it off and unplugged it multiple times. I've only had my iMac for around 4 months, and I bought it brand new. What do I need to do?
Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
IMac freezes with every other click
I am new to the community and hope to find help for a big problem.
I run OS Yosemite 10.10.1 on my 2010 iMac 2.93 i7 (upgraded to 12GB RAM a year ago).
For the past 5 days it gives me the colorful wheel of death almost with every second click. I cannot open a program or search a site or move a file without the iMac freezing up. Just writing these two sentences, it froze twice for about 45 seconds, which is the average, but it can take up to 2 min before the Mac responds again. I have not changed anything on my iMac knowingly in the past few weeks.
I closed every program I don't need, shut down dropbox, Google Chrome, and any program I can imagine slows down processing speed. I cleaned my desktop, made sure I have 20% space on the HD. Since I am always suspicious of the Microsoft Office programs, particularly Outlook, I logged in with a different user name that does not use these programs. Nothing helps. I used Magician, Disk Utility, Activity monitor to see if anything looks odd, but all seems normal.
I am not that Mac literate, so I just discovered the Console that seems to log error events. This is what the last 5 min look like; it tells me I had 4000 events logged yesterday. Is this normal?
Please if anyone can advise what to check, change or do to stop this nuisance that would be awesome.

Under utilities you have to run the disk doctor to see what is wrong with either your hard drive or backup drive - stop time machine first & check the backup drive first as that is the one that may be damaged.

I'm not sure if Apple employees monitor this board or not but the problems with iMac's freezing and programs crashing with kerner errors is becoming more and more troublesome. I have read all the forums here and from what I have read it seems to be an issue with 10.6.3 update and video drivers. I have also tried everything from reinstalling Lion to repairing the disk, starting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM and still the problem persists. Today I got the black box that said "something has happened and you restart" and sometimes I get the windowshade that also tells me restart.
I have a lot of work to do for clients and cannot afford to have this continue to happen. My next step is to resintall Lion again and not install the 10.6.4 update which some say is the problem. Anyone who has a work around or help would be greatly appreciated.I seem to have resolved the problem. Here is what I did:
-Delete all Google and Rockmelt applications support folders in your Library
-Reboot your Mac in 64 bit by holding down the 6 and 4 keys
-Once your Mac is rebooted reinstall Lion but do not install the latest security update
I did this and so far no problems
