IMac freezes during TC backup

Since a few days my iMac (newest version running Mountain Lion) freezes during TC backups. Since TC is set to backup every hour my computer freezes every hour - the MAC wheel pops up and keeps spinning.
Once I abort the TC backup it takes about half a minute for iMac to become responsive again.
Is there a solution for this problem - of course besides turning off TC and TM.
Thanks

The episode below started at 06.20.32 (it began when TC started backingup). I tried closing an application and launching Console - without success.
At 06.23.11 I tried stopping the backup and shutting down TC (I think it shows first at 06.23.15).
At 06.23.41 my iMac was responsive again.
The info below only covers 06.23.04 till 06.23.45 (it seems way too much data and I don't know what's useful and what isn't).
Thanks

  • Imac freezes during start-up. Seems to be caused by Airport issue.

My Imac freezes during startup. I have tried starting it in safe mode without any luck. After the initial start sequence when it gets to this point: Airport linkup en1, the computer starts writing the same line endlessly: com.apple.launch [1] (com.apple.mDNSRsponder [2710]): posix_spawnp (“/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder”,...): No such file or directory
I am not a technician and new to Macs too. I have tried almost everything in the supportfile about freeze issues. I am not able to start the Mac in safe mode. I have repaired the disk. I have tried reinstalling the software, but this fails too.
Did a couple of changes on the timecapsule before it happened (creating a network and new security settings and backup settings) and installed Photoshop Elements 9 and did a lot of file restructuring. Left the computer open and came back to a blue screen. Since then I have been unable to start.
My macbook works fine with the changes. I am stuck - what to try now?
I need my files and they are luckily on the timecapsule, but i am not able to open the imac-bundle file on the macbook, why?
    Thanks for helping.

did a lot of file restructuring.
In Finder>Go>enter /usr/sbin do you see mDNSResponder listed there?
Try Repairing Permissions for the Volume in Disk Utility (Note: may take a long time in 10.5.8)

  • My ipod touch freezes during the backup portion of sync...help

Everytime I try to sync my ipod touch it freezes during the backup portion.  Not sure what to do

Go to preferences, devices, and prevent it from syncing automatically.
Disable any and all security/antivirus programs on your computer, restart it, and try to sync it again.
They are most likely interfering with iTunes.
If this does not work, create another user for your computer (as an Administrator), and try to sync your ipod on that user.

  • Imac freezes during startup stops @ blue screen & have tried everything

My imac freezes during startup, it gets to blue screen and just sits. I have tried to boot from the Leopard 10.5 install disk, and just sits, can't get to log in screen. Have run the disk utility and it says disk appears to be ok, Won't startup up in safe boot, blue screen just sit. Have tried 'fsck' fix, just sits at blue screen. Have reset PRAM, I don't know want else to try. Disk utility & "fsck" says 'disk appears to be ok'. When exiting fsck, it will start the process then stops. Does anyone have any suggestions, I have not tried to reinstall 10.5 yet.
    Thanks in advance
    Paula

After reading resolutions TS1541 & other threads, I decided to try to archive & reinstall 10.5 from install disc. Well that made things worse, sometime during reinstall, system locked up, I looked at the log during install & it had been locked up about 3 hours and now I have nothing. no systems files, using Target( firewire cable) disc with my macbook, I can see I have previous system folder & a folder that say system. but Install disc does not see OS.
Do I need to take it to an apple store for repair or what. It's only 3 years old.
    please help

  • Time Machine Freezes During Initial Backup

I have a 500gb external Western Digital HDD I am trying to use as my Time Machine backup drive. The computer I'm using is a 24" iMac with about 250gb of data on it. The external drive is partitioned as a GUID / Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
When I try to run the initial backup, it will randomly freeze during the process. Sometimes it gets halfway through the backup and freezes, other times, right away. Sometimes there is an error, other times there isn't.
I have tried re-partitioning the drive many times, manually starting the backup and also letting the backup start on its own. All of my applications are closed when the backup begins, but no matter what I do, I cannot get the initial backup process to complete.
Ironically, I had the same problem on ANOTHER iMac of mine, with the same model Western Digital drive. The backup would freeze randomly during the initial process but I would keep manually re-starting the backup until it magically finished the backup. Now that computer seems to be working fine.
However, I still can't get this other iMac to work. I find it strange that two separate computers with two separate 500gb Western Digital drives would have the same problem with Time Machine, unless the problem is with Time Machine itself.
Any ideas out there how to resolve this?

Why do you assume it's TM, not WD?
    There are many possibilities.
Did you completely erase the drive before formatting it? Sometimes the utilities, etc., that come on new drives can interfere with TM.
Is your iMac an Intel? If it's an older PPC, you need the Apple Partition Map, not GUID.
Is this USB or FireWire? USB is often much slower and less reliable.
If it's USB, does it have it's own power, or does it draw from your Mac? Often there's just barely enough to run a drive; if you have another USB peripheral, it can take enough power to interfere with the disk.
Does it have an automatic "spin down" feature? If so, can you disable it?
Does it have the latest updates? I thing I saw a post here recently that a WD update fixed, but I can't find it now.
Are you running any anti-virus scanning? If so, exclude your TM drive from it.
Sometimes excluding it from Spotlight as well, at least during a large initial backup, can prevent conflicts between TM and Spotlight.

  • TC freezes during initial backup

I have tried searching this forum for an answer to my problem with no luck. My 1 tb TC freezes during the same spot every time I try an initial backup. When the initial backup hits 690 out of 760 gb the transfer rate crawls to zero.
I have tried both ethernet and wireless connections, downgrading my firmware from 7.3.2 to 7.3.1 to 7.3 as well as resetting the time capsule and starting over. Other than this problem the TC works flawlessly. No problems with the internet, or accessing the drive and mounting the sparse bundle. Once the initial backup freezes at 690 gb I can manually stop the backup.
Does anyone have any suggesitons? Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I have been battling with this thing for quite some time now. I am using OS X 10.5.6 on a PowerMac G5. Thanks a lot

I have had a similar problem. I just bought my Time Capsule and everything was great until I tried to do the initial back up. It shuts down completely every time. Several tries later, and nothing.

  • Time Machine freezes during automated backups

I have a Mac Pro running Mac OS 10.6.4 that freezes during incremental time machine backups. The initial backup will run fine, but during a subsequent backup the machine will always lock up and need to be restarted.
I've tried repairing the permissions looking for trouble in log files, but haven't had any luck.
    Any ideas?

Try verifying your internal HD, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If that fails, you'll have to use your Install disc to repair it, per the yellow box there.

  • IMac freezes during download of a podcast or import of a CD with iTunes

Downloading a podcast or the import of a CD makes my iMac freeze quite often, at least occasionally. Sometimes iMac freezes just playing a song. I have got MacOS 10.6.8 and the latest iTunes version. I'm afraid there is a corrupted song somewhere. How can I find it?

This problem has been driving me crazy for some time. It happens when any of my podcasts finish downloading while I am watching another video podcast. The video podcast I am currently watching pauses for usually at least 30 seconds but progresses without the playback. I am running iTunes on my Macbook Pro with 2GB ram. I assumed for the longest time it was the 5400 rpm drive but I'm not sure. I hope someone has a helpful hint! TIA, Brian

  • OS X Lion 10.7.1 unresponsive/freezing during TimeMachine backup

    Hi together,
first I must say: From the features point of view I like Lion very much!
But: Since I have installed it, the system periodically freezes! It took me quite a while to figure out the cause... It seems that the TimeMachine backup is the problem. Since I manually disabled it, the system is definitely more stable. Now I rarely see the "Colored rotating disc"....
Maybe this will help you as well to put you Mac back into a state where you acutally are able to work with (UNTIL HOPEFULLY APPLE FIXES THOSE BUGS SOON!)
    Regards Sepp
    P.s. I use a Synology DS410 as TimeCapsule (with DSM 3.2-1869)

  • Imac freezing during star craft 2 load screen

iMac has been freezing at the load screen of SC2.  It usually happens after I've been binge playing for 3-4 consecutive hours.  I can still skype and talk to people if I've had it up and running before the freeze.  Skype continues to work, but then SC2 load screen comes up and I can't navigate or shrink the window to be able to do anything else.
I'm wondering if it's overheating right around the 4 hour mark?  And if this is normal for an iMac?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • 10.4.11 imac freezing during shutdown

Hi, discovered my mother has been turning her imac off at the wall every night because when she tries to shutdown it freezes. It freezes at the point when the circular lines are spinning. Any suggestions?

Hi Alexis, and a warm welcome to the forums!
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.

  • Time Machine Freezes during full backup

I just got a new MacBook Pro. I am trying to create an initial Time Machine full backup.
The process freezes after processing 6.39GB out of 462.76GB. Further, Time Machine
also globally freezes after the following steps:
    Reboot
    Try full backup
    -- it freezes
    Stop backup
    -- backup stops
    Try to start backup again
TimeMachine is now completely frozen. Further, all the top-right menus seem frozen.
    Try to restart machine
Machine cannot completely shutdown -- it stays in a zombie state trying to shutdown forever
Force shutdown (pressing power button continously until the machine shuts down).
I've tried this process about 10 times.
Same behavior using 4 different types of backup disks.
(network attached via afs, direct usb, direct fire-wire).
Here's the console output is below.
The "freezing" seems to coincide with the output of:
    "kernel[0]: AppleVTD: waiting space (512)"
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
    Thanks!
    Luis.

If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac freezes during startup

Hey all, my iMac has been at my house alone for 3-4 months while I was away. It was working perfectly fine before I left. When I returned home recently and tried to start it up it took much longer to get to the sign in screen then usual. When I logged in to my account it would show my desktop wallpaper but nothing else. The screen would flash now and then random bits of things and that's all. I could move the mouse on a blank flashing desktop.
Everything I had on the HDD was already copied over to a backup before I left, so I decided I was just going to try and reinstall the OSX and see if that would do anything. When I try to boot from the CD it just gets to the apple logo screen with the loading symbol beneath it and will stay like that for pretty much forever.
Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks a lot ^_^

  • Early 2006 20" iMac: Freezing During Use

Lately, I've been experiencing more frequent (sometimes as often as 3x/day) sudden total lockup situations. Only a restart via the power button works. When idle, it'll run forever, but most often, the freeze seems to happen while moving the mouse, scrolling a web page, or moving across the dock. I'm not aware of anything that's changed recently. I have checked permissions, used "repair disk" from boot DVD (no problems were found), and reset PRAM (pending results after having done that). CrashReporter shows:

Any suggestions would be appreciated, including how best to interpret logs, which ones to check, etc. I do have Apple Care, so I can take it in if necessary, but at this point, I'm not sure if it's hardware or software.
    Thanks!

*Step 1* Try a different user, if problem persists then it is a deeper system issue or hardware.
*Step 2* Swap hardware (drives/keyboard/mouse etc) and/or minimise hardware
*Step 3* Run a clean up utility like Disk Warrior and see if that fixes it
*Step 4* Talk to AppleCare with whatever you have learned. It is possible to get an onsite service. I got one.
*Step 5* If the onsite doesn't fix it, ask for a replacement Mac. I got one and so far so good, I have had it now for 4 hrs and am now setting up again.
*Step "Wherever nervous"* Backup and remove all your documents and non-core software. Do a complete system carbon copy, you may want this in the near future. I keep multiple WD320 Gb portable HDs for just such purposes. They are colored so I can tell them apart.
Also have an external FW drive to boot from, you may want an emergency system with various utilities on it to work on your Mac, it can be a mirror of your existing user so that you can continue working or do a clean install at any time

  • IMac freezing during startup

So I was working on my iMac the other day and all of a sudden the screen went blank (grey screen). Turned it off using the power button and restarted it. I get the chime and the apple logo coming up with the scrolling wheel below but then the screen goes blank and I can't get any further than that.
Have tried booting up in safe mode (Shift), verbose (Cmd+V), starting in Recovery System (Cmd+R), Single User Mode (Cmd+S) and resetting the NVRAM/PRAM (Option + Cmd + P + R). Nothing has worked. Always get to the apple logo and scrolling wheel only to freeze on a gray screen after that.
Can't find my Install Disc but have tracked one down that I'm going to try tomorrow.
Besides the Install Disc does anyone have any suggestions that could help me out? Only have a portion of my HD backed up (stupid I know) so really hoping this issue is solveable and that I can salvage what I have on that computer.
    Thanks!!

Try booting while holding down the Option key.
Theoretically that should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
The original install disc cannot repair the startup disk on a Mac running v10.7 Lion. Only OS X Recovery
