IMac freezes, fails to reinstall OS, HD ok(?)
Yesterday my iMac (Intel, Mid 2007, EMC2134, Lion 10.7.2) started acting up: Doing TM indexing (which went on forever, and which I hadn't noticed was going on before) the iMac started being irratic, applications taking long to start (if ever), beach balls galore. I notice that the temperature at the upper left corner (seen from the front) was really hot, the temperature at the exhaust-slit was 60 C. OS X would eventually freeze. When I rebooted, I got the grey screen with the progress bar. I ran Disk Utility both from within Lion and from recovery disc. Some HD faults found, bur repaired. SMART status clean. Booted into Win XP on Boot Camp and ran SMART detection software - came out clean, but eventually XP froze. Tried reinstall from TM backup, completed, but eventually again freeze. Back in Disk Utility HD repair failed. Erased drive and tried reinstall from USB Lion key, fail. Erase and Reinstall Snow Leopard from CD fails, or freezes within 20 min.
Are these sure signs of HD failure, and will replacing the drive solve the problems incl. the excessive heat? I'm up for exchanging the HD myself, but if it could just as well be logic board or HD controller or whatever, I probably will need to go to repair service (no Apple Stores here in Denmark :-( )
So I got it resolved now.
As mentioned, I did'nt get anywhere trying to reinstall any OS (SL or Lion) as my Mac would just freeze at some time. I tried to erase and make new partitions etc. to no avail. The AHT didn't report errors on three consecutive runs. So I concluded it had to be a bad disk.
Today I took my iMac apart and replaced the hard drive with a Seagate 1TB (ST31000528AS) following the guide from iFixIt. Tricky thing, but if you take the time it's not that hard. The worst was getting the harddisk bracket out of the cabinet. Anyway, a TM restore and I am allmost as good as before.
Remaining is restoring my Boot Camp partition. I have salvage an image of the partition from the old disk using WinClone. Now I just need to see if it will restore alright.
I am still getting exhaust air temperatures of about 60 C at the left side ventilation outlet (as far as I can tell it was the power supply sitting there). It's probably normal then ...

Please help.If you are trying to upgrade using a gray-faced OS X disk from another system, that won't work, as those disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. You'll need to drop the $29 on a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is available from the Apple online store. Note Snow Leopard requires 1GB minimum, and you may want at least 2GB for better performance.

Since updating to OS X Mavericks, my iMac freezes multiple times per day. This never happend before. I happens in mail, safari, outlook, you name it. I can move my mouse, but I can't select or do anything until I power down and back on. Any idea's?

Imac freezes during start-up. Seems to be caused by Airport issue.
My Imac freezes during startup. I have tried starting it in safe mode without any luck. After the initial start sequence when it gets to this point: Airport linkup en1, the computer starts writing the same line endlessly: com.apple.launch [1] (com.apple.mDNSRsponder [2710]): posix_spawnp (“/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder”,...): No such file or directory
I am not a technician and new to Macs too. I have tried almost everything in the supportfile about freeze issues. I am not able to start the Mac in safe mode. I have repaired the disk. I have tried reinstalling the software, but this fails too.
Did a couple of changes on the timecapsule before it happened (creating a network and new security settings and backup settings) and installed Photoshop Elements 9 and did a lot of file restructuring. Left the computer open and came back to a blue screen. Since then I have been unable to start.
My macbook works fine with the changes. I am stuck - what to try now?
I need my files and they are luckily on the timecapsule, but i am not able to open the imac-bundle file on the macbook, why?

My iMac freezes when using Firefox
My iMac freezes when using Firefox. We have to restart our computer.
TutorDaddy, if this Mac is still covered by the initial warranty or under AppleCare, take it in and have it looked at. As the old label used to say, there truly are "no user serviceable parts inside." Kernel panics very usually indicate failing hardware.
I have an older iBook G4 that started developing kernel panics and like you, despite reinstalling the OS from a freshly formatted volume, they kept continuing. I looked at the crash log and saw that in each instance of panic, the last bit of code to be accessed had something to do with AirPort. Knowing that the AirPort software was at then current levels, I surmised the problem to be a bad AirPort networking card which, on that particular model of the iBook, was a very small module attached directly to the logic board. Since the computer was out of AppleCare, I broke the machine down myself (I didn't realize that there could be so many barely visible screws in one machine) and removed the offending piece of hardware. My iBook lives but without WiFi, it now sits as a more or less desktop machine needing an ethernet connection to stay connected to a network.
I do not suggest you break into your iMac. First of all, I'm guessing one would need to be able to pull off the glass and have the necessary glue to reattach it, which is not really available to us consumers. If you're feeling adventurous enough to read the crash logs from each panic, you might be able to surmise the hardware component (or badly written application or library; it can happen) that's causing the panic. If it's a software issue, remove the offending software app and see if the panics return. If it's a hardware issue, it's best to let a competent service tech qualified on Apple hardware to handle it.

IMac Freezing Issue -Need Confirmation...
Hey all,
I need confirmation on whether or not zapping the PRAM seems to stop the iMac freezing issue. I have had 3 freezes within 10 minutes. I restarted after my last preparation to installing Leopard and the screen saver kicked in, which is the 'Cosmos' slide show and the graphics froze up. Screen went black and I left it for a couple of minutes. I came back to it, and had an image on the screen, but it was still locked up. So I restarted it. After boot up, I opened Activity monitor, and locked up again.
So I zapped the PRAM on this 3rd restart and have not locked up since. I'd bet 100 to 1 that if I were to restart, without the PRAM reset, I would crash within 5 minutes of the start up.
I really believe without a doubt these iMac reboot issues are related to specific EFI versions failing to initialize graphics correctly.
Can anyone confirm this? If your iMac crashes, does Zapping the PRAM fix it?
I'll be calling Executive relations contact and telling her the bad news.
Okay, so first off, this isn't a solution to this iMac plague, but it should prevent the freezing and NO, it does not have to do with removing the ATI drivers.
I was asked to install Leopard by Executive relations at Apple and told her that, as soon as I do, my iMac will freeze. So, I have been preparing the Leopard install and have crashed 3 times, in a row... at that point I said, Leopard is going to be a no go but I needed to use my iMac without it crashing. So, zapped the PRAM like I did before and immediately the graphic freezes went away.
SoHere is my experience, iMac 24:
I bought in JR NY 2 weeks ago. I had to use it without internet connection (so no updates) and no freezes.
Then I connected to internet and installed the available updates and start to get the freezes, even trying the PRAM reset.
I tried to remove the extra memory, change memory slot but no lucky, video artifacts (like pixels not refreshing) when moving the mouse over the dock icons then freeze.
I had no other softwares installed at all, only the OS applications.
I formatted the HD and reinstalled the Tiger and didn't accepted any update, so I could use the imac for 2 days without a single freeze, but some black screens when screen saver starts.
Since no freezes, I decided to update the OS again and after the first boot the freezes came back very fast, I could start a freeze in about 10 seconds.
I tried the PRAM reset without sucess and my machine was ready to go to a tech person.
Yesterday I updated the OS to 10.4.11 and did a PRAM reset after the update and tested the machine for 2 hours without a freeze or video artifacts, looks very stable, but I have to test it more.
You guys tried the Tiger last update ?

IMac freezing on Safari, Mail, itunes after sleeping
I've had a problem for the past 4 days with my iMac freezing mainly when on Safari, Mail, iTunes...
It happens most times after it sleeps, then I can't quite and have to force quite, then it won't restart or shut down
I have to force shut down... It will then reboot ok and work ok for so long then goes again mainly after sleeping.
When for example Safari fails, Firefox still works fine?!
I've gone into the disk utility and verified the permissions and checked the drive. all ok!
and I've reset the RAM and totally unplugged the iMac.
I've read on some post advising not to reinstall and it's a software issue and should wait for the next update?
Is anybody having the same problem?

I have disabled Safari Extensions, and didn't succeed to remove Avira's kext file, but as I said, I have experienced this freezes before I had Avira.
I don't think that is the problem.
Can anyone help me and recommend what else should I do? This thing is quite annoying. My iMac is my workplace and constant freezes are frustrating.

My 30inch iMac freezes up after the screensave has been running for a few minutes. This happens about every other day. I leave my system running all the time. nothing will unfreeze things so I have to do a hard button reset. I am running all the latest system updates etc.
Reinstall Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard
Then restart your Mac, try Safari.
If it crashes again, third party plugins could still be at fault even though they do not show up in the report.

IMac Freezes in everything other than Windows 7

My iMac was running Snow Leopard and Windows 7 via Boot Camp successfully with no issues until yesterday. The iMac froze in Snow Leopard and I had to manually reboot by holding down power button.
Since then OS X won't run, Windows is still OK. If I select OS X the iMac freezes on the grey screen. I've tried safe mode and still no joy as it freezes on the grey screen as well.
If I place my OS X 10.6 install disk in the dvd drive it reads the disk, stays on the grey screen and after 2 minutes I then get the Kernel panic screen to reboot. Tried on a 10.5 Install disk in case disk was the problem but it does the same thing (windows install disk works fine, so DVD player OK).
Have also reset PROM and NVRAM. Rebooted machine using cmd S into Linux to check disk and it found no issues.
Anyone got any other ideas. I have a full time machine backup so trashing the hard disk if I could would be OK.Just managed to get the cmd v command working but only with placing the OS X install disk in. It shows a long list of directories and folders that it tries to find the number of files but it can't count due to missing folder.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 has done something. I would love to get this machine in a position so I can wipe the whole disk as if new and reinstall OS X but as I mentioned before I get the Kernal panic if I place an OS X install disk in -
Ever since installing Lion my Imac freezes when in sleep mode. Has anyone had the same problem and been able to fix it
Yes, I have the same problem sometimes, along with numerous others. It appears to be a bug with Bluetooth failing to wake up.
The 'fix' that works for me and others on here, according to responses on the forum, is to go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'Computer sleep' to 'never'. For me, this provides a totally reliable solution that I can live with until Apple come up with a fix (hopefully). -

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -
My iMac freezes and locks-up when I do certain things.
a) Go into the Video/Audio pane on ichat prefs
b) when I'm scrolling through image sin preview
c) when using time machine sometimes
d) once or twice when switching to full screen in Parallels
e) in frontrow once
Any ideas?
Message was edited by: stonemeisterYou should try reinstalling Leopard Make sure to to a full clean install, also check your ram if you have less then 2gb turn off some features of the OS ( or get more ) if you think you have more ram than what is showing up then you have a bad ram chip and that would cause allot of what you are talking about to happen.

Issues with iMac freezing using Mail, Safari, Chrome
I'm having issues with my iMac freezing, forcing me to hard restart my computer each time. I think I've had to powered down via power button altleast a twenty times today and yesterday. I've restarted 4 times just trying to finish this post
It seemed like I was only freezing using Safari at websites like facebook and youtube.com. So I switched to Chrome, which lasted a few hours until I started freezing on that as well.
I logged on as a Guest account and they seemed to be working fine. I thought Flash may be the issue so I re-installed but no dice. I emptied cache, cleared history from each browser, etc -- no help.
Then today I started freezing just using mail. While typing a message, auto correct attempted to correct a word and my system completely locked up from that.
I have plenty of hard drive space, RAM isn't an issue either.

Thank you!I uninstalled the Glims plug-in on safari, and that's seemed to cure a little bit of the problem with safari. But I'm still getting hang-ups and freezes.
