My iMac freezes and locks-up when I do certain things.
a) Go into the Video/Audio pane on ichat prefs
b) when I'm scrolling through image sin preview
c) when using time machine sometimes
d) once or twice when switching to full screen in Parallels

Any ideas?

You should try reinstalling Leopard Make sure to to a full clean install, also check your ram if you have less then 2gb turn off some features of the OS ( or get more ) if you think you have more ram than what is showing up then you have a bad ram chip and that would cause allot of what you are talking about to happen.

  • IMac freeze Snow Leopard 10.6.6

For the last 6 months or so I have experienced annoying "freezes" when the screen (mid session) gives me a colour e.g. dark yellow or red, and everything freezes.
Solution is system force quit and start again.
Tried all sorts of recommended fixes but nothing worked for more than a few days.
Recently (3 weeks ago) adjusted the configure of batch tasks on Main Menu - ticked ALL the boxes, leaving only Update Prebindings. Ran the program and bingo
NO MORE FREEZES Please do not ask me why as I am not a techo.
All I can say it is worth a try as it has worked 100% for my system.
Nice to have my iMac back again.

After speaking to the author of Main Menu, it appears it has some system optimization tasks that it runs that can prevent freezes. Not knowing what those are, you just played your luck chances. I would not always depend on those features to improve your system. System caches and prebindings are often voodoo in their ability to help or harm a system depending on the level of corruption in your system. Before running such a utility again, check here first to verify that's what it is needed.

Until I installed the SMC FanControl application my screen would "break up" into strange patterns and then would eventually freeze.  Please help.

If you are trying to upgrade using a gray-faced OS X disk from another system, that won't work, as those disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. You'll need to drop the $29 on a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is available from the Apple online store. Note Snow Leopard requires 1GB minimum, and you may want at least 2GB for better performance.

  • 2007 iMac freezes up, rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve?

My circa 2007 iMac freezes up, and rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales).

  • IMac Freezing - No video glitch, but unresponsive

    Good morning all,
In the past week or so, I've started to have problems with my iMac freezing. This has occurred while using iChat, playing World of Warcraft and while using Safari (not all at once).
In short, the video display seems to freeze. I can still hear audio (ie. the other person on iChat speaking), but everything else in non-responsive. The keyboard does not respond and I cannot ALT-Tab or open any other programs. My only recourse is to manually turn off the computer and try again.
It's usually a guaranteed failure when opening up Warcraft. About 4 seconds after the program has opened, the computer freezes.
I've searched the forums and have come across several threads that involve some sort of graphical glitch, from which I do not suffer. That being said, I thought a new thread might be appropriate.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

My iMac has been repeatedly freezing when I am working in Final Cut Express. It plays the sound but freezes the video. It has been a horrible experience to try to edit 'blind'!
I have vacuumed the air vents, installed smcFan Control (great to manual adjust fan speeds on all 3 internal fans), re-installed Snow Leopard & gone through copious hours as all the software updates each time I've re-installed, and I run the disc doctor program. It started happening around the time Steve Jobs said Apple would no longer use Flash. I thought it a Flash issue since it only has to do with the playback of video. Today I discovered that clips I downloaded yesterday were also freezing in my desktop Picasa. Meaning it's not Final Cut, or Picasa, and unlikely my video card as all videos streamed from the NET (on YouTube, etc) play fine, and in fact my videos that freeze on my iMac when uploaded to YouTube or Facebook play fine.
I am enormously and thoroughly frustrated, as you can imagine. I had 15 clips from the G20 Protest March yesterday and was not able to make an adequate video to upload out of them because the video keeps freezing, and losing synch with the audio - and every time you try to play it, it freezes in a different spot!!
    Horrendous problem.
Today, then, following advice in this thread, I will try re-installing back an update or so on OSX - I'm using 10.6.4, and perhaps need to go backwards?
This is an awful problem and I am surprised Apple hasn't addressed it. Perhaps it only relates to computers a few years old?
A usually very happy iMac user who is very disgruntled these days...

  • My Imac freezes 5 x a day at least... please help!!!

    Hello,
I'm pulling my hair out because I use my Imac for all my work. Everyday I hold down the reset button *at least 5 times* because the Imac freezes.
    -Updated all software
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Bought another gig of ram
-Won't completely verify disk, says: *Error: underlying task reported failure on exit, 1HFS volume needs repair*
    - Won't allow me to repair disk
What I don't get is that when things freeze, I hit force quit and they don't quit?!! I mean the little black arrow remains underneath the icon. Then I hit "restart" in menu and it won't restart, it just freezes. I thought that was the whole point of force quitting?
So after the screen just freezes blue with the black spinning icon, I have to hold the reset button. Sometimes I don't even get that far, I have to do it on the desktop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! The guy at the computer store said good luck when I asked if anyone in town fixed Macs, lol!

+Won't allow me to repair disk+
It is a different procedure from repairing permissions, which was not the problem, but which you did correctly perform. You can only repair disk using Disk Utility on another volume, not from the same volume, and the other volume must be the same version of OS X.
If you are still using Tiger 10.4.11, not Leopard or SL, boot from your grey-labeled Install Disc and after the first screen there will be a menu bar at the top that includes a Utilities menu from which you can choose Disk Utility. You will be able to try the Repair Disk button, and you should run it completely through at least twice to see if you can get it repaired.
Then quit and restart, don't continue further into the install process. Eject the Install Disc.
If your OS X is now Leopard or SL, make sure that you use the same disc that installed your current OS X.

  • My iMac freezes up after the screensaver runs for a few minutes

My 30inch iMac freezes up after the screensave has been running for a few minutes.  This happens about every other day.  I leave my system running all the time.  nothing will unfreeze things so I have to do a hard button reset.  I am running all the latest system updates etc.

    Reinstall  Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard
Then restart your Mac, try Safari.
If it crashes again, third party plugins could still be at fault even though they do not show up in the report.
Follow the troubleshooting help here >  Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • IMac Freezes in everything other than Windows 7

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My iMac was running Snow Leopard and Windows 7 via Boot Camp successfully with no issues until yesterday. The iMac froze in Snow Leopard and I had to manually reboot by holding down power button.
Since then OS X won't run, Windows is still OK. If I select OS X the iMac freezes on the grey screen. I've tried safe mode and still no joy as it freezes on the grey screen as well.
If I place my OS X 10.6 install disk in the dvd drive it reads the disk, stays on the grey screen and after 2 minutes I then get the Kernel panic screen to reboot. Tried on a 10.5 Install disk in case disk was the problem but it does the same thing (windows install disk works fine, so DVD player OK).
Have also reset PROM and NVRAM. Rebooted machine using cmd S into Linux to check disk and it found no issues.
Anyone got any other ideas. I have a full time machine backup so trashing the hard disk if I could would be OK.

Just managed to get the cmd v command working but only with placing the OS X install disk in. It shows a long list of directories and folders that it tries to find the number of files but it can't count due to missing folder.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 has done something. I would love to get this machine in a position so I can wipe the whole disk as if new and reinstall OS X but as I mentioned before I get the Kernal panic if I place an OS X install disk in

  • IMac Freezes Periodically During Screen Saver Only

I own a late-2006 Intel-based iMac. Over the last few months, I've noticed that the iMac freezes when the screen saver is running. This doesn't happen all the time, and it doesn't matter what screen saver I use. (None of the screen savers is a third-party.) The iMac doesn't freeze at any other time.
    Any ideas?
    - Keith
P.S. I'm running Snow Leopard right now, and it happens even with Snow Leopard, just as it did with plain ol' Leopard.

Your iMac has a dedicated Graphic's chip (GPU), while some of the Late 2006 17" iMacs had a GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM that shared with the main memory. To check which Graphic's chip you have go to: Apple > About This Mac > More Info and in the Hardware section select Graphics/Display.
If you would like to monitor the temperature of your GPU, CPU, HD and Memory check out the iStat Pro widget > http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
The main reason I suspect the lack of RAM over an overheating GPU is because you only reported a problem with the Screen Saver and not with other intense graphic's like movies, videos or games.
Please let us know how you make out with the RAM upgrade.

  • Imac freezes up but mouse still works

I've got an imac with Snow Leopard on it.  It has started to freeze up quite a bit, maybe once every two days.  There are four profiles on the computer and it happens to them all.  I have reparied permissions in each profile and run the Hardware test both standard and extended and it returned zero problems.  I've reset the PRAM and NVRAM.  When it freezes up the only thing that still works is the mouse.  It moves the pointer but clicking doesn't do anything.  Trying to force quit applications doesn't do anything.  I tried unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in, thinking maybe it wasn't really freezing but just a bad keyboard but that didn't do anything--and neither does rightclicking on anything.
What else can I try?  I'd be willing to post a log file if someone would tell me the right one to post.

Disconnect all unneeded peripherals (firewire, usb).
    Try smc and pram reset.
Next boot from you installer dvd or lion recovery partition (you didn't specify what OS you are using) or an external bootable backup and try to verify/repair your drive(s) with Disk Utility (not repair permissions -- it's a waste of time and doesn't repair anything in your login accounts anyhow).
Boot in safe mode to see if there are still problems.  If not reboot normally.

  • IMac freezes up completely

Has anyone had their iMac freezing on them when viewing video in full screen mode? The pictue stops, but the sound is still going, but the computer isn't accepting ANY user input. It's happened to me on a couple of occasions now. I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8

    Burgerino wrote:
I haven't done this using a recovery disc yet though, as I haven't had time.
There is no "recovery disc" with Snow Leopard.  Is this the os that you actually have since you posted in its forum area?  If so, try the following -
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.  Computer still freezing while viewing videos?

  • IMac Freezes, Anyone Know How to Unfreeze?

I don't know about anyone else but I am getting really f'ing tired of my brand new iMac freezing up after installing Lion. I know good and well that Apple knows about this but nothing from them at all. Anyway, enough of my ********.
Does anyone know how to unfreeze it without cycling power? For the record, Snow Leopard never did this. Is Lion going to become the Apple version of Vista? C'mon Apple, fix this already. You sure can tell Steve is on sick leave.
    Initially get spinning wheel
Them mouse moves cursor freely but can't click on anything. Can't force quit from tHe dock as it doesn't pull up. Only thing I have found to do is a a reboot. Very freaking Windows like.

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • IMac Freezes on Restart

    Hi Everyone,
I have a 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with Snow Leopard. It is completely up-to-date and has always ran beautifully. I have not installed an new programs lately.
Recently, my computer began to slow down a bit and now when I go to APPLE > Restart (maybe after an update or just because I like to restart my computer on occasion) the bar at the top disappears, my dock stays up on the screen, and the computer just sits there and freezes up on me. I am forced to hold down the button on the back to get my computer back.
    Any idea's? Thanks.

Hi - how did you do your update to 10.6.5, via software update or using the combo?
Sometimes a few people have problems after a major update to the OS and often re-applying the update using the combo updater: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 will resolve odd behaviour.
It's often advised to 'repair permissions' before and after a major update - Utilities>Disk Utility, select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair permissions'.
If any of this resolves the problem I'd be inclined to check my HD is all good by booting from the install disk that came with the Mac and doing a disk check. Disk in DVD/CD drive and restart holding down the C key, select your language at the multi-lingo screen and at the next screen from the menu bar Utilities>Disk Utility, click on Macintosh HD and select verify/repair. If it reports some things were fixed run repair again until you get a clean pass and the restart as normal from the Apple menu.

  • IMac Freezing Issue -Need Confirmation...

    Hey all,
I need confirmation on whether or not zapping the PRAM seems to stop the iMac freezing issue. I have had 3 freezes within 10 minutes. I restarted after my last preparation to installing Leopard and the screen saver kicked in, which is the 'Cosmos' slide show and the graphics froze up. Screen went black and I left it for a couple of minutes. I came back to it, and had an image on the screen, but it was still locked up. So I restarted it. After boot up, I opened Activity monitor, and locked up again.
So I zapped the PRAM on this 3rd restart and have not locked up since. I'd bet 100 to 1 that if I were to restart, without the PRAM reset, I would crash within 5 minutes of the start up.
I really believe without a doubt these iMac reboot issues are related to specific EFI versions failing to initialize graphics correctly.
Can anyone confirm this? If your iMac crashes, does Zapping the PRAM fix it?
I'll be calling Executive relations contact and telling her the bad news.
Okay, so first off, this isn't a solution to this iMac plague, but it should prevent the freezing and NO, it does not have to do with removing the ATI drivers.
I was asked to install Leopard by Executive relations at Apple and told her that, as soon as I do, my iMac will freeze. So, I have been preparing the Leopard install and have crashed 3 times, in a row... at that point I said, Leopard is going to be a no go but I needed to use my iMac without it crashing. So, zapped the PRAM like I did before and immediately the graphic freezes went away.
    So

Here is my experience, iMac 24:
I bought in JR NY 2 weeks ago. I had to use it without internet connection (so no updates) and no freezes.
Then I connected to internet and installed the available updates and start to get the freezes, even trying the PRAM reset.
I tried to remove the extra memory, change memory slot but no lucky, video artifacts (like pixels not refreshing) when moving the mouse over the dock icons then freeze.
I had no other softwares installed at all, only the OS applications.
I formatted the HD and reinstalled the Tiger and didn't accepted any update, so I could use the imac for 2 days without a single freeze, but some black screens when screen saver starts.
Since no freezes, I decided to update the OS again and after the first boot the freezes came back very fast, I could start a freeze in about 10 seconds.
I tried the PRAM reset without sucess and my machine was ready to go to a tech person.
Yesterday I updated the OS to 10.4.11 and did a PRAM reset after the update and tested the machine for 2 hours without a freeze or video artifacts, looks very stable, but I have to test it more.
You guys tried the Tiger last update ?
