IMac freezes mouse usage when woken from sleep

I have an iMac, 2011 running OS X 10.9.4.
Recently I have had an issue with the mouse freezing up after the computer has been in sleep mode. I can use a different mouse and have the same response so I don't think the mouse is the issue. The only way to get it back on is to use keyboard commands and force shutdown the unit. Is the hard drive going bad? is there something I can do to clean things up? I need some help please?

Judging by the pixel issue I suspect a hardware problem. I would recommend running Apple's Hardware Test in extended mode, run it in extended mode and if no errors appear run the test multiple times. The reason being is AHT doesn't always pick up errors but if it does the errors are real. If you are not familiar with AHT please look over:

  • 27" Cinema display flickers when woken from sleep

I've noticed that my 27" Apple Cinema display flickers briefly when woken from sleep.
I have had the display for 8 months, and haven't noticed this before.
It flickers (or flashes), just once when the display wakes when the computer is woken from sleep. It only affects the bottom third of the display.
Once it has properly woken, and flickered once, it then works o.k.
    Has anyone else had this?
    Thanks.
    Bob.

Yeah - I'm trying to verify that 100% right now. I know that I won't get full functionality from the TB dispaly (no TB, FW or ethernet on the back of the monitor) but if I can get video and USB between the Mac and the displays, that would be enough. I haven't seen any docuemtnation anywhere deatailing wether or not that TB displays will work with existing video cards / Mac Pro's, or if I'll have to do a full round of upgrades including my Mac Pro and the ATI 5770. And as you know, there are no TB video cards on the market at this time. My timing basically *****...
My plan was to return the Cinema Displays while I still can, fall back to a spare Dell 21" that I have lying around the house for a few weeks (yukkkk..), and then figure out what to do with the TB diplsay as they get closer to release. I'm contempling upgrading my Mac Pro, but if I can stick with what I have, it would save me some cash.I woudln't even mind upgrading my video card, but I just dropped $2000 on these 2 Cinema Display's last week, and I feel like they are already outdated.
PS - I am constantly selling gear, so resale value and having the "latest and greatest" are pretty important to me, hence the interest in the TB displays.

  • Keyboard and trackpad unresponsive when woken from sleep

I have a Retina MBP running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
The last couple days when I wake my computer from sleep the trackpad and keyboard do not respond, but my external mouse works.
I have to power down my computer, restart and then everything works.
Anyone else have this issue?  Anyone know a solution?
    Thanks

    Hi MojoTed,
I'm experiencing an issue that sounds exactly like what you describe. It's not a lag, so much as an occasional failure of the trackpad to actually activate the button after it's been depressed. It'll often also prematurely release while I'm dragging a window. It's super frustrating.
I'm pretty sure the problem is mechanical. If I press with much more force than I'm used to on my old 2007 MacBook Pro or the Magic Trackpad, it always works consistently. So the workaround for me is just "press harder". Harder than I'm comfortable with, actually.
I've taken it to the Genius Bar, but they refused to service it because they didn't see a problem with just pressing harder. So I think I'm just stuck with it, unless it fails completely at some point down the road.
MojoTed, if you "press harder" does your problem go away? If so we may have the exact same issue.

  • BootCamp Windows 7 - Crashes when woken from Sleep Mode

Consistent problem on the WIN 7 side of the partitioned HD- goes into Sleep Mode either manually or on a timer, and then crashes when woken up; No problem using Sleep Mode on OSx side.
Not likely MS will provide a solution. All recent upgrades/updates installed.
Running WIN 7 Home Premium 64Bit
Need to save the plant and conserve energy!
    Any suggestions?

Ok, so it's certainly a Broadcom wifi adapter. The Lenovo nomenclature refers to it as "1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter (43142)". But why are you trying to install Realtek drivers?
The only driver I could find is this one, for Windows 8. Please uninstall all other drivers, reboot and install this one, or let Windows find a suitable driver and see if that works. Also please read the document from the link, it gives detailed instructions on installation and uninstallation, how to check version number etc.
It might be the case that you have to wait a bit for an updated driver for win 8.1 to resolve the problem, but It doesn't hurt if we try to find a solution.

  • Disappearing mouse pointer when resuming from sleep

I am having an issue where my X1-Carbon Touch returns from sleep, the mouse pointer is not visible.  I can see the items being highlighted.  The touch screen works fine.  Eventually for unknown reasons it finally re-appears.  Sometimes a couple of minutes sometimes over an hour.  Restarting the machine fixes the problem, but it is a real pain.
OS: Windows 8 Pro, with most recent Windows update

    Hi, littlejohnjt
This sounds like it may be an issue with the UltraNav driver. I would recommend opening the Charms Bar and selecting Search and typing Device Manager into the Search box. Lastly, select Settings beneath the Search box to filter by settings instead of programs. Once in Device Manager, open the tree for Mice and other pointing devices. Right-click on the device that appears in the tree and select Properties. From here, navigate to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the list and then follow the prompts. After the device is uninstalled, restart the machine. This process allows Windows to install a generic driver, which may help your issues. If it does, I would try installing the Synaptics mouse and keyboard driver found here, as it has helped others with similar issues in the past.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • When woken from sleep, Displays wakes as one color, and instantly changes.

I have noticed that on my new Macbook Pro 2.2ghz when I wake it up from sleep, the screen first goes to a navy blueish solid screen, flashes to the regular screen, and then changes to another color in a little less than a second. I remember reading somewhere that one great thing about the LED lcd is that it has no warm up, it just turns on. I am finding this weird that it changes colors, drastically at that, when it wakes. Please let me know why this is and if it is happening to anyone else. Thanks.

This is the color profile loading... Go to your display preferences, select color, and choose either Apple RGB or Generic RGB, it should look like what you are seeing. I don't know which is the "default", but my guess is that when the computer wakes up, it figures out what monitors it has attached and then loads the appropriate color profile.

  • IMac G5 Dies When Waking From Sleep

I have a Rev A iMac G5 I bought in 2004. Recently it started doing some weird stuff when waking from sleep. After looking at some of the other posts, I think this is going to be repetitive, but I thought I would see if anyone had any suggestions
After either putting the computer to sleep or letting it go to sleep, it will frequently die after the mouse has been clicked to wake it up. I have tried resetting both the SMU and PRAM as well as repairing disk permissions and repairing the disk. None of this has seemed to help. Occasionally, I get lucky and am able to wake it from sleep normally, but this doesn't happen often. After it dies following the mouse click, I can unplug it and then plug it back in and it will start up normally. Interestingly, it will start up from shutdown normally as well as restart normally. Additionally, as long as it doesn't go to sleep, I think you can typically use it as long as you want and it won't quit.
Today, I took the back cover off and messed around with it for awhile. The diagnostic LED behavior seems odd to me. LED #1 comes on when it is plugged into the outlet. When following Apple's instructions for troubleshooting a computer that won't start up, mine does fine because as I said it will start up normally if you unplug it and then plug it back in. Because of this, I set my computer to go to sleep quickly with inactivity. Although it did wake normally at least once, it died numerous times. The irregularity seems to occur with LED #2. One time it "died", I believe LED #2 actually remained lit and something seemed to still be working based on noise. However, the green light for the "caps lock" button wouldn't come on. Other times LED #2 would go out when it died after pushing the mouse with it asleep. During these times, I could push the internal power button and LED #2 would briefly light up, but nothing more than that would happen. On more than one occasion I would then push the SMU reset button and then push the internal power button again at which point LED #2 would fail to come on at all. After pushing the power button (and occasionally pushing the SMU button again) what seemed to be a random number of times, the computer would all the sudden start up normally again.
My top 3 guesses are a failed power supply, failed logic board, or exhausted PRAM battery (I have never changed it). The first two may be a bit to pricey for me to consider replacing. If they are the problem, I may just settle for setting the computer to never sleep. Does this sound like it could be caused by the PRAM battery going out?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My bad on not reporting back sooner. Indeed, replacing the PRAM battery did not fix the problem. The situation seems odd to me as I was able to sometimes wake the computer from sleep without it quitting while others times it dies. It does fine as long as it doesn't go to sleep. I can start it up and shut it down with no problems; additionally, it appears to do fine even when left on for long periods of time as long as it doesn't go to sleep. To be correct it doesn't seem to so much be the state of "sleeping", but the act of trying to wake it up from sleep. I don't think ventilation is a problem.
What I have done is just set it to not sleep. We just shut it down once in awhile. Rather than forking out the money, I think I will just use this work around as long as it continues to work.

  • Since updating to Lion the iMac won't recognise the external hard drive (maxtor) when waking from sleep mode,

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. I now find that I have to restart the imac to get the drive recognised..which is fine until the imac goes into sleep mode then I lose the drive and have to restart etc etc.....anyone suffering same issue.  The Ext Drive worked perfectly until the upgrade..

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK.  I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

  • IMac loses connection to network when waking from sleep

    Hi There,
We are a small mixed environment of Macs and PCs running on a Windows 2008 domain. One of 2 iMacs that now run Mountain Lion 10.8.5 is having problems when waking from sleep. One of our designers will go for lunch and the machine will sleep for about 30 to 40 minutes. Upon her return the iMac will kick her off of the 3 shares she usually logs into (2 are on Win2008 machines, and 1 is a MacPro running 10.6.8 Server).
If she has files open in any of the Creative Suite Apps, the app will crash and she will have to restart the whole machine. If no files are open then she can usually reconnect to the shares after a short while.  Obviously I told her not to leave any files open, but its causing her some headaches.
Its also creating srv errors (id 2012) on our domain controllers, when she tries to wake her machine.
This Imac is a late 2009, and we have a 2011 model that has no issues at all. Both are set exactly the same.
I have reset SMC, Pram, and rebinded to the domain, and searched through these forums quite a bit to no avail.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am continuing to work on this issue, and have tried a number of things based on searching here and elsewhere.
And Lucky Me, I have been able to replicate this behavior on one of other Macs (imac 2011, on 10.8.5). I also see errors on 2 separate Windows file servers on the domain (Event ID: srv 2012).
Below I am posting what seems to be the relevant area of the log.

This is from the 2011 iMac, and I see something very similar to this on the 2009 machine.
I continue to think this is a software issue related to 10.8.5 and Adobe CS (CS5 on the 2009 machine and CS 5.5 on the 2011) as this appears to have come up only since the recent update.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • MBP 2010 13'' completely freezing when loading from sleep after battery drain

    Hi all,
Ever since upgrading do Mountain Lion, everytime my MBP 2010 13'' goes to sleep after battery drainage, it freezes in the last "dash" of the waking up process. Furthermore I noticed that the background during wake up is not my dimmed desktop anymore as it used to be on Lion, it is the Apple logo on a white background (similar to Power up screen). I experience no other freezing stated by the community that are attributed to ML, iTunes or Safari, only this one when recovering from sleep. This last time I waited a couple of hours before power down, only resulting in abnormal heating. Already tried fully charge, fully recharge, reboot, cmd+opt+p+r, ... Anyone has this? Is it a known problem being somehow addressed by Apple? Thanks in advance!

So can anyone tell me how can I open an issue on this for Apple? Thanks.

  • Loss of mouse control after waking from sleep

I am running a Mac mini G4 (see specs below) with a remote Microsoft mouse-keyboard connection that uses a USB connection. I didn't turn on the computer for a month, I installed necessary updates to some programs, and control of the mouse pointer disappears after I waken it from sleep mode. I installed new batteries in the mouse, but it makes no difference. The keyboard works fine. Both the keyboard and the mouse were purchased with the computer, and I've never had a problem with either of them until now. What's wrong, and what can be done? Thanks very much. Peace.

It's not an entirely unusual problem to have the mouse drop out when waking from sleep, and it's caused by the fact the system wakes before the connection to the mouse is re-established. To the system, that means the mouse appears to be missing, thus the driver doesn't load up for it. Cordless mice are amongst the most problematic in this respect because as the system wakes, not only does it have to recognize the cordless transceiver in time, but then also make contact with the mouse and correctly identify it. That isn't normally a problem, but it means almost anything that delays the chain of contact will result in the mouse failing to work. Note that if using a USB hub, this can exacerbate the problem significantly, so at least for testing, the mouse and keyboard should be connected directly to the system.
There are a couple of simple tests to perform: firstly, does the mouse work perfectly when the system is booted rather than woken? Assuming it does, the next is whether the mouse works correctly if it is used to wake the system from sleep by clicking a button?
If the mouse works correctly when the system is booted, then the problem is either that the mini's USB ports are not functioning entirely correctly, or that there is either a problem with the USB 'dongle' communicating with the mouse on wake up, or some interference in the area that is inhibiting error-free communication between the devices.
In the latter instance, placing the mouse a few inches from the USB 'dongle' it communicates with and then waking the system is a good test, since the range is short and thus the risk of interference affecting communication is reduced. If it works like that, then you have something in the area that is causing communication problems.
Assuming the mouse still doesn't work when left next to the dongle, then then next step is to try an PMU reset:

  • Mac Pro restarts when waking from sleep

    Hi everyone.
I just got a brand new Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz), and had Apple upgrade the RAM to 2GB (4 x 512MB). My first problem is that the computer always restarts when waking from sleep, which is annoying! I have reset the SMC by unplugging the machine for a minite, but the problem persists. I have also tried sleeping the computer with nothing plugged in except the monitor and keyboard/mouse, but I get the same problem. All software/firmware is fully up to date.
I have also just noticed that the System Profiler states that there is only 1GB RAM in the computer, even though I am sure that it recognised 2GB when I got the machine a fortnight ago (I even have a screen shot of 'about this mac' to prove it!). Can anybody help, or do I need to phone Apple support?
    Thanks,
    Matthew

I have a similar problem - hard restart when closing the lid to put it to sleep. It looks like there is a bluetooth issue(?), but I'm not sure what to do with it. We don't have any blue tooth devices in our house. From the console log:

  • Desktop Wallpaper Screensaver Bug? [When waking from sleep]

I'm not sure if this topic is in the correct category but it seems to fit.
I have a new 15.4" MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.3. I have multiple images that I want as a wallpaper and so I decided to select "Change picture" in the preferences pane. I also selected "Random order" and chose "When waking from sleep" as the time for the wallpaper to change.
However, if I close my lid, and then re-open it, when the computer wakes up, instead of the wallpaper changing, it changes twice.
Now, this isn't really a problem but it can get annoying sometimes and I was wondering if this problem is due to something I do, rather than the operating system.
    Thanks.

I just noticed something, perhaps this will help? There appear to be two kinds of sleep, display sleep and computer sleep. I noticed that if my machine is running (playing music, for instance) and the display goes to sleep, when I use the mouse to wake up the screen the background changes. So maybe when I wake up the machine from computer sleep it changes once for waking from computer sleep, and once more for waking from display sleep?

  • Kernel Panic when waking from sleep mode., Kernel Panic when waking from sleep mode.

    Hi,
I have an Imac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo desktop which I have upgraded to lion.
Recently I keep getting kernel panics when waking from sleep mode and I cannot figure out what it is.
I am not very computer savy - I.e. I use a computer but don't know programming etc.
The computer then asks me to shut down and restart.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is driving me crazy.

Hi, for other peoples information - I finally figured out the problem. It was actually a faulty RAM module which I had bought. I had upgraded from 2 to 4 gb of RAM using an approved type of RAM for my particular computer. Finally I removed one module of RAM (after doing nearly everything else under the sun including trying to reinstall the operating system and wipe the computer etc) and the computer worked fine.

In an attempt to fix the problem I booted from the Leopard Install Disc.
The machine has 1 HD installed that's partitioned in 2 - OS on one volume, data on the other.
In Disk Utility the boot volume's name is disk0s10 rather that the name I gave it (the other volume name is OK). Could this have anything to do with the problem?
