IMac freezes on every boot up

Everytime I boot up my iMac it freezes on the startup screen (white screen with grey Apple logo) and I have to then restore it from a time machine back up before it fully starts up.
This has only happened since I upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion (upgraded from Snow Leopard), I usually leave my iMac in sleep mode but sometimes I need to turn it off for power reasons or in updating the system. Does anyone know how I can fix this I don't want to leave my iMac on 365 days a year and I would like to be able to install important system updates.

Do this:
1. Go into Time Machine Preferences, Options, then delete all exceptions.
2. Plug in your external drive and back up using time machine.
3. Shut off your Mac
4. Turn it on, press and hold the Option key as soon as you hit the power button, this will take the computer into OS X Utilities
5. Once in OSX Util, select Disk Utility -> Erase, make sure the format is Mac OSX Extended Journal, rename the disk Macintosh HD if you want, then click erase.
6. Once erased close the window and select reinstall OSX Mountain Lion and let it finish installing
7. The first time starting in mountain lion, setup asistant will ask you if you want to transfer data, choose transfer from another disk, plug in your backup drive and transfer.
It should restore all your info back.
good luck.

  • My 27" iMac Freezes, Won't boot from DVD

My iMac has started to freeze up every few minutes.  Every so often, it becomes unresponsive; the mouse cursor still moves (sometimes it turns into a beach ball), but I can't click or type anything.  Whenever this happens, the hard drive begins to churn as if it's reading or writing something big.  This usually lasts only about thirty seconds to a minute, but it's happening with frustrating regularity.
I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few days, now.  I'll walk you through the steps I've tried so far.
I ran a check on the hard drive with Disk Utility.  This came back with a message about the files/directories not matching up with their expected counts.  The solution it suggested was to boot from a Snow Leopard disc and let Disk Utility run a Repair Disk while the startup drive is not mounted.  It was at this point that I realized that I couldn't boot from the dvd.  Whether holding 'C' or 'Option', when it tries to boot from the disc, it gets to the Apple logo and then hangs.
I kept researching and found a workaround; boot into Single User Mode and perform fsck, which fixed the Disk Utility error, but did not solve the freezes/noises, and I still can't boot from the dvd.
    Any ideas?

Thank you for your prompt response.
Well, I'm not sure if I explained it clearly.  Holding the Option key does indeed bring up a list of bootable devices.  The problem arises when control is passed to the Snow Leopard disc.  The Apple logo flashes, I can hear the optical drive being accessed, but then it locks up.
I should also clarify that it's not the disc that came with the iMac.  I just moved and can't find the original disc, so I borrowed my neighbor's (which came from a Macbook he bought after mine (which I bought last year)).  I am under the impression that Macs can't boot from discs that are older than the version of OS X that they shipped with.  I wouldn't think that's the issue, here, as his came out later than mine, but I've still got a lot to learn about life in the Appleverse.
My data should be safe--I've got an up to date Time Machine backup on an external drive.  The performance issues aside, I'm really looking to understand the underlying problem(s) here.
So, one option is that the RAM might be bad.  I can test that by swapping out each DIMM and checking if the problem is resolved.  One thing I don't understand, though, is why bad RAM would manifest as the hard drive being accessed.  Is there a definitive way to test the logic board, as there is for testing RAM?
Also, I keep thinking of other little syptoms which may or may not be related.
    Recap of Symptoms:
Magic Mouse occasionally loses its magic (right click, multitouch, etc.) and needs to be turned off and on.
Free disk space fluctuates by as much as eight gigs (without my intervention).
System stalls (accompanied by HD access sounds) multiple times per hour.
Can't boot from dvds (though, this could be a version problem).
**Fixed:  Disk Utility Verify Disk error.
I do understand that this might be a hardware error, and I certainly know how much trouble that sort of thing is to find/fix.  I'm definitely willing to open the case and swap out DIMMs and drives, but not until I've exhausted my software solution options.  *crosses fingers*

  • IMac freezes with every other click

I am new to the community and hope to find help for a big problem.
I run OS Yosemite 10.10.1 on my 2010 iMac 2.93 i7 (upgraded to 12GB RAM a year ago).
For the past 5 days it gives me the colorful wheel of death almost with every second click. I cannot open a program or search a site or move a file without the iMac freezing up. Just writing these two sentences, it froze twice for about 45 seconds, which is the average, but it can take up to 2 min before the Mac responds again. I have not changed anything on my iMac knowingly in the past few weeks.
I closed every program I don't need, shut down dropbox, Google Chrome, and any program I can imagine slows down processing speed. I cleaned my desktop, made sure I have 20% space on the HD. Since I am always suspicious of the Microsoft Office programs, particularly Outlook, I logged in with a different user name that does not use these programs. Nothing helps. I used Magician, Disk Utility, Activity monitor to see if anything looks odd, but all seems normal.
I am not that Mac literate, so I just discovered the Console that seems to log error events. This is what the last 5 min look like; it tells me I had 4000 events logged yesterday. Is this normal?
Please if anyone can advise what to check, change or do to stop this nuisance that would be awesome.
    Thank You!

    Basic guess:
Under utilities you have to run the disk doctor to see what is wrong with either your hard drive or backup drive - stop time machine first & check the backup drive first as that is the one that may be damaged.
Hopefully someone is online now who can post the details -
Another option is to take it in for repair to apple store or authorized apple dealer (if on warrantee of any kind)

  • IMac Freezing after every 2-4 days (randomly)

Hi folks, I recently bought a 2014 iMac (21.5) inch 16GB machine. I'm going batty with it randomly freezing (beach ball) once every 2-4 days for no apparent reason. I've even looked at console logs and can't figure out. I've resetted SMC/PV(whatever), even reinstalled Mavericks (using a clean bootable drive). We use the iMac for two main purposes: Plex Media streaming (once a day really) and we use Juniper VPN to connect to our corporate network (which explains why you see juniper there)
    Any help?

  • Yosemite upgrade issue - iMac freeze and cannot boot again

    Dear all,
Two days ago I updated my iMac 27" (mid 2011) from OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion to 10.10 Yosemite.
Clean installation was done via USB, 3 user created one admin and 2 standard users (all with the option increase contrast option on). The following software installed:
    Adobe Lightroom 5.7
    Datacolor Spyder4Elite 4.5.8 (monitor calibration)
    Microsoft Office 2011
    PlayOnMac 4.2.5
    iMovie 2.1.1
    VLC 2.1.5
    Google Chrome
After one day I had the first strange reboot, but than it seemed working fine.
Today while using it, something strange happened: the image on the screen "shifted" 5cm to the left, meaning that the 5cm on the left of the screen were moved to the right and than everything freezed. With a power off I rebooted.
Thinking the issue was related to the screen I uninstalled and removed Spyder4Elite.
I rebooted and it was working fine.
After a while, the screen went almost completely blank, I could see the very top first 3/4 pixels and recognize the top bar. Nothing. After a while I forced a reboot.
I tried to reboot, but the same appears. I turned it off for a bit.
Turinig it on again the following happened:
    Boot screen
    White screen flickering black
    Black screen
    White screen
    Reboot
White screen stating the the computer restarted after an error
Boot screen with pink vertical lines (see image below)
    White screen
    Black screen
    Reboot
    Start again at #7
    Image for #7:
    Image for #8:
I then turned everything off and disconnected the plug as well. After turning on again now everything starts directly at point #7 into an infinite loop.
I tried to start and hold "D" key for the diagnostic tools. Nothing happens boot and whitescreen.
If I hold the option key I can select the boot options, choosing Recovery 10.10.1, white screen appears and than reboot again.
    Does anyone know what happened?
Does anyone else had a similar issue?
Is there a way to run diagnostic tool to check hardware failures?
Is there a way to browse the HD content to save a file?
    Any other suggestions or ideas?
The only thing I have, is the USB key with Yosemite on it.
Fortunately on the external HD I still have the "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app": is there a way to create a bootable USB key of Mountain Lion using windows?
Thank you for your kind support,
    blp
ps: ah.. Apple care obviously expired in August...

Before deciding that you can't replace the drive yourself, visit the following site and find the step by step instructions for replacing the drive yourself:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
If you see the instructions and feel that you can replace the drive yourself, you will save money that way. I'm not that familiar with modern iMacs, but I know it was very easy to replace the drive in my old iMac. It may not be as hard to do as you think. If you want extra help, you can post questions on the iMac forum.
If you still don't feel like it is something you can do yourself, try looking for an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) in your area and see what it might cost to have the AASP do the replacement. Often an AASP can do a repair for less money than Apple, and they will usually be willing to install a drive that you have obtained elsewhere for a reasonable price. From what I have read on these forums, many people have used AASP's to install bigger and faster drives on their machines.
Definitely contact Western Digital about your drive. Usually WD drives come with a 3 year warranty, and if the drive fails before then, WD will replace the drive. KT has mentioned that the drive apparently is not under warranty, but might qualify for some sort of an upgrade. Before shopping elsewhere, check to see if this upgrade might entitle you to a very good deal on a replacement drive or something of that nature.
    Good luck!

  • E430 Freezes at Every Boot

Literally, every single time when I boot my E430, it will freeze at the first time when I boot it. My solution is wait till after it displayed my desktop wallpaper, and confirm the curse freezes in the middle, then I hit the power button to make it enter sleep mode, then hit it again to awake it, enter system, then the freeze will eliminate.
Is there any once and for all solution for this kind of problem? Thank you very much!

That is the fsck happening.  If it is clearning an orphan inode or recovering the journal that means the shutdown was not clean, so the journal doesn't match with what is actually on disk.  Unfortunately, fsck is not like most programs, and outputs even on success.  There has been some talk on the systemd mailing list about having this information surpressed if everything is file.  This does actually tend to be how traditional *nix programs work (no output on success... try cp or mv or rm).
I think it would make a whole lot of sense for the "quiet" parameter to actually be quiet if everything goes to plan.  But we'll see if anything comes of it.  For now it will just f*ck up your nice splash screen.  You can have the information passed to a different console if you edit journald.conf.  I think it is the "TTYPath=" parameter that can be changed.  Though I am not sure if this will actually surpress the fsck from the initramfs (the fsck on your rootfs).  I have been using btrfs, so there is no fsck on boot.

  • 5 year old iMac freezes momentarily every few seconds

Over the past few months, anytime I use my iMac, it will freeze for a second or 2 then resume its work.  It is especially bad when web surfing or watching videos.  I have upgraded the RAM to 12gb with no improvement.  It has a 3.2ghz i3 quadcore processor.  From what I have read, the graphics module is integrated on the motherboard.
Is this a graphics card issue?  If so, are their any solutions besides replacing the computer?

OK. Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on the ne account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one or more at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting ones. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

  • Thought I had it fixed, by iMac is still freezing sometimes on boot up

In an earlier post, I thought we had my iMac fixed but now it's still freezing up on boot up, occasionally.
Sometimes I'll just get a grey screen with no logo after the boot up chime, sometimes it'll take a good minute or two for my iMac to fully boot up, and sometimes it'll boot just fine.
Usually, when I get just the grey screen I have to use the Command-Control-Power button to reset the Mac just to boot.
Any ideas as to why? I've repaired the hard disk after the first time this happened and it found no errors.
I read my console log and there's nothing glaring out that looks like a massive error.
I have been getting the following errors, could they be the problem?
BootCacheControl: could not stop cache/fetch history: Cannot allocate memory
vmnet: Hub 1 does not exist, allocating memory.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a follow up to this.
I booted from CD and ran disk utility. I repaired the disk and said everything was A-ok. I tried to repair disk permissions and it the progress bar froze a 1/3rd of the way in saying "1 minute remaining" and never moved after that.
    ideas?

I have disabled Safari Extensions, and didn't succeed to remove Avira's kext file, but as I said, I have experienced this freezes before I had Avira.
I don't think that is the problem.
Can anyone help me and recommend what else should I do? This thing is quite annoying. My iMac is my workplace and constant freezes are frustrating.
    Thanks in advance

  • 24" iMac Freezes / Reboot / Freezes again...

I have a 24" iMac used to be very very solid but now its freezing almost every other day.
The error is the Grey Screen telling you to reboot. I haven't noticed any correlation between what I'm doing and the errors. Sometimes I'm playing WoW, sometimes the computer is just left alone and when I get back its locked.
The error says to turn off and power back on, I do so and after the white screen I get the blue screen with the Progress Bar and it will give me the same error message there.
I've run Disk Utility and it finds an error, I repair, and reboot and it will boot up fine but its only a matter of a day or days before I have to do the process all over again. This is very annoying and not what I expected from Apple/Mac.
Any suggestions as to keep my computer from causing a disk error, or maybe a way to have the computer automatically fix the disk without me having to boot from CD?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi.
Apparently, your machine is suffering Kernel Panics. You should check your system log, it could provide some information about the incidents.
It may be caused by software or hardware failure or incompatibility.
Have you added third party RAM?
Try booting into Safe Mode and see if it panics.

  • IMac freezes on first start up but after shutdown and second start is ok

Within the last 6 months our iMac started to freeze on every startup but after using the power button to shut down and after a second start up all is ok.
    What could be causing this?
    Carl

My first thought is the backup battery is dead or near dead. When you first boot up, it may be that because of the low battery your settings are corrupt and it freezes. On the second boot up, now that the system is all charged up and there is power to the PMU/PRAM (or whatever they call it now), that it has enough to properly reset or overcome bad PMU settings and restart properly.
If your iMac is over a year old and you have never changed that battery, now would be a good time to check that. One thing you can try is simply removing the battery completely. The PMU will reset every time the computer is powered down, but if the computer now starts reliably every time, then that was your problem.

  • IMac freezes with beachball

    Hi,
I sometimes have a situation where, during use of Logic, all of a sudden my iMac freezes with the famous beach ball. Only the mouse pointer still moves when moving the mouse, and the harddisk temperature monitor util still shows changing temperatures every couple of second. I have the impression that the harddisk become unaccessable; it happened twice while bouncing a song. A couple of months ago I had this lockup situation a couple of times in 2 or 3 days, and since it hasn't happened until today. Weird! The only solution is to press the power button for 5 seconds (at least, couldn't get it to life any other way).
Is this a known Logic issue???
By the way, the HD temperature is around 55 degrees Celcius. Is this normal??
    Thanks, Jaap

Yep, only with Logic so far...
You might want to boot from the install DVD and run a verify check to see if there are any errors on the drive, also would be a good idea to repair permissions.
Doubtful it's the drive temperature... it could even be the program that's monitoring the temperature causing the problem. Logic punishes almost every section of a computer, memory, processor, hard drive...etc. It's best to not have anything else running in the background if possible.
How much memory do you have?
Also... if you're working with a lot of audio tracks, the system drive in not your best choice for recording.
OSX does a considerable amount of disk writes on it's own.

  • IMac 2007 won't boot

    I have a strange problem.
My 24" iMac 2007 won't boot.  It won't boot either from CD/DVD or anything.  It will display the white screen with the Apple logo, and the spinning wheel under it, until the spinning wheel will stop spinning.  Using my old Linux knowledge, I find that it seems like it freezes on "Login Window Application".  Before this happened the iMac would occationally freeze, creating strange wave-patterns across the screen.
    I have tried the following:
    1) safe mode - same result
    2) reset NVRAM - same result
    3) single user - I can fix the filesystem, delete loginmanager files - same result
    4) boot from Apple CD - same result
Every time the computer hangs, the strange waves will appear on the screen.  My guess it is the video card that's causing this - and I need to replace it.
Can anyone give me heads an idea to confirm my suspicion - or to find the real culprit?
    regards

OK, thanks, that was a helpful reply.
Somewhere in my browsing, I gathered that any Mac OS install disk would have the AHT.  After searching around, I found the CD/DVD.
After extended testing, the AHT says nothing's wrong, but I find two things strange:
    1) the AHT tells me that my memory is 1 GB, while it is 2 GB.
    2) the AHT tells me nothing about my HDD - as if it's not there.....
I make two conclusions from that;  namely that one RAM block is faulty and the HDD is invisible seen from AHT.  The latter would stress me immensely, if I hadn't seen the entire drive from single user mode before.  There could be some faulty sectors though that would mean that the OS is behaving strangely.
Please advise on hints on where you would go next - anyone?
