IMac freezes on startup or just afterwards

My iMac has recently been freezing up. Two days ago it would start up okay, but then freezes during opening Safari and Mail (my login items). Now it doesn't get past the blue screen. I can start up in Safe Mode and I've run Repair Permissions, and I've started with a disk and repaired the drive. The problem persists. The only things I've installed lately were the Apple Software Updates. Since everything works okay in Safe Mode, I think it's some sort of software conflict. Any ideas? Thanks!

Create a new admin account, log into it, activate Help Viewer, and ensure that it works correctly. Then, while logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Imac freezes during startup stops @ blue screen & have tried everything

My imac freezes during startup, it gets to blue screen and just sits. I have tried to boot from the Leopard 10.5 install disk, and just sits, can't get to log in screen. Have run the disk utility and it says disk appears to be ok, Won't startup up in safe boot, blue screen just sit. Have tried 'fsck' fix, just sits at blue screen. Have reset PRAM, I don't know want else to try. Disk utility & "fsck" says 'disk appears to be ok'. When exiting fsck, it will start the process then stops. Does anyone have any suggestions, I have not tried to reinstall 10.5 yet.
    Thanks in advance
    Paula

After reading resolutions TS1541 & other threads, I decided to try to archive & reinstall 10.5 from install disc. Well that made things worse, sometime during reinstall, system locked up, I looked at the log during install & it had been locked up about 3 hours and now I have nothing. no systems files, using Target( firewire cable) disc with my macbook, I can see I have previous system folder & a folder that say system. but Install disc does not see OS.
Do I need to take it to an apple store for repair or what. It's only 3 years old.
    please help

  • Imac freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans

My Imac G5 non intel 20" freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans start and it won't boot. just have the logo on the grey screen.
I've tried resetting Pram - think that was the right thing to do?
I've tried disk utility, but it won't settle for me to choose the hard drive, it kind of sticks and keeps rotating the wheel.
    any ideas anyone?
    please help.

Lots of things you can try - first, try resetting the SMU. Next, boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and try to verify and repair your hard drive. If that doesn't work, try running the Apple Hardware Test on one of your install discs.
Also, depending on which model you have, you may be eligible for Apple's power supply or video and power issues.
    Please post back with results,
    Miriam

  • IMac freezing after startup

My 2010 iMac freezes every time I boot it up. I have completely erased the hard drive and started fresh with Snow Leopard, repaired the disk/disk permissions, booted in safe mode, reset the PRAM...I've tried everything to no avail. Within 30 seconds-2 minutes of startup, the spinning beach ball appears and I can't do anything. I guess it's not actually "frozen," as I can still move the mouse and click on things, but they won't actually open. Example: I can click on the apple menu and click about this mac, but it won't open the window. I have been trying to download the Snow Leopard update so that I can install Mavericks to see if that will help, but either the software check stalls or the download stalls within minutes of starting. Any ideas?!

Just to rule out hardware issues, run the AHT.

  • My iMac freeze at startup page,

my iMac (OS Lion) freeze at startup page.
recently, my iMac asks me to put password at startup (i didn't set for it , and i don't want it)
Now. it doesn't have space for me to put down my password.
How can I get into my computer.? anyone?
    Man...If i know LIon ***** as **** I will never ever upgrade.

Yes I did attempted troubleshooting by Safe Mode.
System Preference ---> User & Groups
Automatic login dropdown menu shown as "OFF" so i changed to My "user name".
At first, I tried to changed Automatic login, Preference window froze on me. I tried so many time
Question is how come recently Mac asked me to sign in, i haven't set this option at the beginning.
Anyway, this issue has been fixed. Thank you for responding my question.
Still one issue remaining, OS take long time at start up and longer time at shutting down.

  • IMac freeze after startup, works fine in safe mode

Hello, my Mid 2010 iMac is freezing  about 3 minutes after startup. Ive tried booting from the instal disk and repairing it but it didnt work. In safe mode it works completely fine. It similar to some other peoples problem but i was hoping someone could help me, my applecare literally just ran out like 3 weeks ago.

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.
    Thanks,

  • Imac freezing on startup, fine in safe mode

Hi there - apologies in advance if I just need to be directed to another thread I've had a look around and can't find what to do now that I'm in safe mode.
My Imac keeps freezing either at the password screen or as soon as I've logged in.
Am I right in thinking that, given that safemode is working without problem, the issue is probably software?
One other thing that might be relevant, I am currently trying to do a time machine backup but it has been stuck on Preparing Backup for about 15 mins now.
I need advice on how I isolate the issue.
    Many thanks.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Imac freezes at startup

Just got an Imac from a friend.  I dont know the exact specs of the imac but do know that it is one of the IMAC intels from either 07,08 or early 09.  The friend told me that it was not working and after I brought it home to try and turn it on, it freezes during the startup screen and will not go any further.  Is there anything I can do to reboot it? or at this point do I need to take it in?
    Thanks

Hi, did you get any Install Discs with it?

  • New iMac freezing on startup after NTFS install

I have a new iMac with OS 10.7.4  that freezes for 5 minutes upon startup, then starts working normally. During this time there is no response to the keyboard or the mouse. Force Quit has no effect.  I have it set to start without a password so it goes straight to the desktop. This behavior started when I installed a Paragon NTFS interpreter from my Seagate external hard drive. This is done during the setup install from the hard drive to allow both Mac and Windows to use the drive. I have tried this three times, reinstalling the OS each time to get the Mac working again.  The drive came with a USB 3 base which is bad news for an iMac. Seagate sent me a firewire base and I hoped that would solve the problem, but no luck. The NTFS interpreter has been uninstalled and the Seagate external drive reformatted as a Mac drive. Everything now works, but the freezing behavior still persists, and I suspect that some startup files for the Mac are corrupted by the NTFS software.  I ran the bootlog in the Console for one of the startups with freezing. The following is the only thing I see that seems unusual:

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6720f Desktop Computer. According to the specs your system came with integrated graphics using ATI HD Radeon 4200 and a 250 watt power supply. You indicate that your computer now has an ATI Radeon™ HD 5670 Graphics card installed and you are having issues. According to AMD the reference ATI HD 5670 graphics card requires a minimum of a 400 watt power supply. If this is a retail card, you will need to upgrade your power supply to accomodate this graphics card. The Corsair CX500 and CX600 power supplies are good choices and are known to fit many HP cases.
Please provide the make (not AMD or ATI, but Asus, EVGA, etc.) and full model number (not 5670, but HD-567X-ZNF3, etc.) of the graphics card in question for more assistance.

  • IMac freezes after startup; locks at Login screen

    Hi,
I have changed the system date to an ealier date - a day earlier. After a few moments, my computer froze. Restarted my computer but it still freezes at login screen - keyboard doesn't work. The system works on safemode though, but normal startup doesn't work at all. No HW was added or removed except for the external USB drive. I also have tried the following items to no avail:
    1) PMU Reset
    2) Changed date/time to normal in safemode and installer-disk startup.
    3) Disk/folders permissions tests were OK. Terminal disk check was OK.
    4) Removed my internet connection and all external disks.
    5) Created another user-admin account.
Please help me here. I'm backing up my data files right now and would reinstall my OS later as a last resort.
    Thanks.
    Ron

Before you wipe your HD and reinstall read this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2326655#2326655 Hopefully this will help

  • IMac freezing during startup

So I was working on my iMac the other day and all of a sudden the screen went blank (grey screen). Turned it off using the power button and restarted it. I get the chime and the apple logo coming up with the scrolling wheel below but then the screen goes blank and I can't get any further than that.
Have tried booting up in safe mode (Shift), verbose (Cmd+V), starting in Recovery System (Cmd+R), Single User Mode (Cmd+S) and resetting the NVRAM/PRAM (Option + Cmd + P + R). Nothing has worked. Always get to the apple logo and scrolling wheel only to freeze on a gray screen after that.
Can't find my Install Disc but have tracked one down that I'm going to try tomorrow.
Besides the Install Disc does anyone have any suggestions that could help me out? Only have a portion of my HD backed up (stupid I know) so really hoping this issue is solveable and that I can salvage what I have on that computer.
    Thanks!!

Try booting while holding down the Option key.
Theoretically that should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
The original install disc cannot repair the startup disk on a Mac running v10.7 Lion. Only OS X Recovery

  • IMac Intel - After installing 10.6.5 imac freezes on startup

I installed 10.6.5 on my intel imac over the weekend and after a couple of uses my imac will no longer boot.
It gets to the gray screen with the loading spinner and after a few seconds the spinner freezes.
I've tried booting into safe mode. After the progress bar disappears the gray screen and spinner appears after a few more seconds the spinner freezes again.
I've reset the p-ram multiple times.
There is a cd in the drive which I can't remove. I tried booting into Open Firmware using Command-Option-O-F; but even that boot freezes.
    Any ideas?

You can try getting the CD out by holding down the eject button while booting, if you can get the CD out then you can boot try booting from the Install Disc that came with the Mac. If you can't get is ejected you will probably need to take it in for service at an AASP.
I'm assuming you haven't been using a bootable clone like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner on an external HD. If you have then you could boot from that.

  • IMac freezes on startup!

When I start up my iMac, I often (not every time) get this spinning beach ball, and it stays there until I turn off and on my computer again (power button)! Has someone any solution here?

    Hi,
Boot in Safe Mode, instructions here..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
Once in Safe Mode check for Login Items that may be preventing your iMac from starting up normally.
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
Click the Apple menu / Shut Down. Restart as you normally do.
And help here for Resolving startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

  • IMac freezes on startup - icons and dock displayed, but frozen

    Hi
My iMac has just frozen. I have tried to restart it the desktop appears but nothing else is happening.
I hace also tried a safe mode restart but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas or suggestions would be extremely useful.

    Hi,
I am having the same problems. I was in the process of copying some photos to a memory card, the process froze my other applications, I tried to cancel that application and then nothing worked. I had to do a hard close. When I turned it on again, I can use my other guest account profile, but mine will remain frozen and I can not choose anything. I can not even log out of my profile.

  • IMac freezes during startup

Hey all, my iMac has been at my house alone for 3-4 months while I was away. It was working perfectly fine before I left. When I returned home recently and tried to start it up it took much longer to get to the sign in screen then usual. When I logged in to my account it would show my desktop wallpaper but nothing else. The screen would flash now and then random bits of things and that's all. I could move the mouse on a blank flashing desktop.
Everything I had on the HDD was already copied over to a backup before I left, so I decided I was just going to try and reinstall the OSX and see if that would do anything. When I try to boot from the CD it just gets to the apple logo screen with the loading symbol beneath it and will stay like that for pretty much forever.
Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks a lot ^_^
