IMac Freezes only while in Windows XP SP3

Hey guys,
I have a late 2008 iMac with a 2.8GHz C2D and 4GB RAM(Stupid 32-bit only recognises 3GB). But whenever i fire up XP, and usually when playing a game, my mac randomly freezes and i have to hard restart. I have had this problem ever since using bootcamp, but ignored it until it started becoming a real pain. However, sometimes i can play games all day without a freeze, or sometimes i get 10 minutes.
I'd also like to say that nothing like this happens on OS X(maybe because i dont really play any games on OS X). But i did read something about a hardware problem, but i want rectification.
Sorry if its a repost but i really need an answer, i have apple-care until 2012.

Hi @DXIS,
I understand that the printer isn't being recognized when connected to the computer and the installation hangs.I can help you with this.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation. Double check your connections, just to make sure the USB cable is connected to the USB port on the back of the printer and not accidentally connected to the Ethernet port.
I have provided a document with some steps to try to see if that will resolve the issue.
'Device setup failed to complete' or 'Unknown device' Message Displays in Windows during USB Install...
Most likely there is a ghost key in the registry for the printer and that is why it isn't being detected.
I will send you a PM to access the registry and steps to do. In the forum beside your handle name just click on the
envelope to view it.
Have a nice day!
Thank You.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
Click the “Kudos Thumbs Up" on the right to say “Thanks” for helping!

  • IMac freezing up while using Safari

My iMac freezes up sometimes while using Safari and even trying to force quit doesn't help because the computer is totally frozen up.
I have left my Activity Monitor open and when it froze again today I was able to see that the system memory seems to be the problem area.
I see the following under System Memory:
Free          almost nothing (here's the problem)
    Wired        1.09 Gb
    Active        2 Gb
    Inactive      3.9 Gb
Why is the ratio between Free and Inactive memory so high?
When the computer eventually unfreezes the Free memory returns to about 4 GB, seems where it should be.
Wondering what could be using the Free memory ?

You have a lot of issues.

To remove the Codec-M spyware, first back up all data, then select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. For any extension with a name you don't recognize, select it and click Uninstall. If in doubt, delete all extensions.
If you use Firefox or Chrome, take the corresponding steps in those browsers. You might have to delete Chrome completely and reinstall it from a fresh download.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.codecm.uploader.plist
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open with a file selected. Delete the selected file. Then do the same with this line:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Codec-M
    Finally, this:
    /Applications/Codec-M.app
This time you may be prompted for your administrator password.
Log out and log back in.

    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.
    C.
Remove "Rapport" by following the instructions on this page.
    D.
Remove "Eltima Player," which is garbage.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
    E.
If your ISP is not StarHub Cable Vision in Singapore, you need to change your network settings. Ask for instructions.
    F.
Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock all your user files, reset their ownership, and remove their access-control lists. If you've set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    G.
If you still have problems after all the above, remove "SurfEasy."

  • Why am I seeing slow performance/freezing only while using Publish Services?

I experience significant lag/lock-up when my Publish Services menu is expanded.  The animation of the menu itself, as well as the other visual functions oF LR.  If the menu is already open, the other parts of the display scroll properly, and no other functionality is affected.
Win7 Ultimate / 6-core AMD / 8GB ram.  I do have my catalog (75k photos) on a different drive than the app, but they all have 5GB+ free space at all times.  This problem began for me in LR4, and even after having removed publish services, reloading individually, and reinstalling LR, upgrading to CC, my system is hobbled if I try to interact with that region of the Navigator.  The functions themselves are fine - uploads, etc. run smoothly.  It seems to be a UI thing.

    Hi Peter
Thanks - I've found that the files were marked as 'hidden' and thus by switching them on gain I was able to recreate the original location.  Regrettably this has had absolutely no effect on my problem. :-(
I have now created a  fresh document, studiously linking all my images properly  (similar number to a DK 'Eyewitness Travel Guide') and by the time I got halfway through its 80 pages, InDesign had slowed to a crawl - ie 15-20 seconds to respond to any command.  It is clearly doing something that it thinks necessary despite all the 'workarounds' people have suggested. Please please Adobe what's going on???

  • Hooking up a projector on macbook white running windows XP SP3 via bootcamp

    Dear friends:
I have a question related on how to set a macbook (white) computer to recognize a projector while runnning windows XP SP3 (using bootcamp).
I'm using a mini DVI to VGA adapter.
The first I did was to plug the cable of the projector on the adapter, then I selected second monitor option in display properties (tab settings) and the best I got from there was to extend windows desktop onto the projector, but the thing is that I want to mirror both screens in order to show a full screen presentation on power point.
I played with the screen resolutions of both monitors and I got no success, so I decided to restart the macbook. Initially on both screens from the projector and that of the macbook it appeared the logo of windows xp when booting, but then when the session was started the screen of the projector got black.
I attempted by using F7 key but still got no success.
Could you give me a suggestion on how to solve this problem??, I hope my english was clear so you can understand my problem.
    Best regards.
    Oscar

Oh k thanks alot for your input. I think my only option is running XP through VM Fusion on my Time Capsule like Eric mentioned. I would have loved to exclude Mac OS X from running at all in the background while I'm on Windows since the programs I'm planning to run on Windows are Memory intensive. That's the whole reason I'm trying not to have windows installed on my macbook HD and have it run independently like it would on bootcamp. Thanks for all your help tho.
If anyone has a different suggestion pls feel free to comment. Thanks

  • IMac Freezes in everything other than Windows 7

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My iMac was running Snow Leopard and Windows 7 via Boot Camp successfully with no issues until yesterday. The iMac froze in Snow Leopard and I had to manually reboot by holding down power button.
Since then OS X won't run, Windows is still OK. If I select OS X the iMac freezes on the grey screen. I've tried safe mode and still no joy as it freezes on the grey screen as well.
If I place my OS X 10.6 install disk in the dvd drive it reads the disk, stays on the grey screen and after 2 minutes I then get the Kernel panic screen to reboot. Tried on a 10.5 Install disk in case disk was the problem but it does the same thing (windows install disk works fine, so DVD player OK).
Have also reset PROM and NVRAM. Rebooted machine using cmd S into Linux to check disk and it found no issues.
Anyone got any other ideas. I have a full time machine backup so trashing the hard disk if I could would be OK.

Just managed to get the cmd v command working but only with placing the OS X install disk in. It shows a long list of directories and folders that it tries to find the number of files but it can't count due to missing folder.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 has done something. I would love to get this machine in a position so I can wipe the whole disk as if new and reinstall OS X but as I mentioned before I get the Kernal panic if I place an OS X install disk in

  • My imac freezes while on Safari.

The color wheel turns, force quit does not respond, the clock even stops.  I've left it like that overnight and when I awake it the next day the color wheel is still turning.  I have to shut it down with the power button and after I restart, then go open Safari, I get thin (one pixel?) horizontal lines almost totally across the screen, at random areas, when I scroll.
It will also randomly freeze when minimizing a window or working in iPhoto.
Mac OS 10.5.8 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 memory & NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT  Software updates are current.

I have the same issue with Safari. Most of the time while scrolling. It has caused countless files which happened to be open at the time of the freeze to be damaged. I took my imac in to Apple and they found nothing wrong. Said it was a software issue.
I have this freeze/hard boot to happen sometimes 4 times per day. I have to close all files when I need to use Safari or any web browser to avoid having them damaged when it inevitably freezes.

Several times my iMac freezes while using Safari. Only way to get out is to do a hard shut-down by holding the start button.  Any ideas?  Version of Maveriks is 10.9.2

a  project on iMovie 09 that  Freezes(only the project)  the viwer window blocked in gray ... .. After editing that  took me a year I'm stuck .
All my finished projects that are in the Library infected with the same symptoms and it happens only after I went into the problematic project.
I tried to open a new project and everything works
...I also tried throwing Recent Files, in the past It solved the problem ,not this time ...
the problem is that this project will take me a long, long time to rebuild

This recently happened to me.  I am a novice, but it seemed like that project got corrupted some how.
    I deleted it.
Went to time machine and picked it up again when I knew it was working ok.
I lost a few hours of work, but not the entire project.
Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

  • IMac Freezes Periodically During Screen Saver Only

I own a late-2006 Intel-based iMac. Over the last few months, I've noticed that the iMac freezes when the screen saver is running. This doesn't happen all the time, and it doesn't matter what screen saver I use. (None of the screen savers is a third-party.) The iMac doesn't freeze at any other time.
    Any ideas?
    - Keith
P.S. I'm running Snow Leopard right now, and it happens even with Snow Leopard, just as it did with plain ol' Leopard.

Your iMac has a dedicated Graphic's chip (GPU), while some of the Late 2006 17" iMacs had a GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM that shared with the main memory. To check which Graphic's chip you have go to: Apple > About This Mac > More Info and in the Hardware section select Graphics/Display.
If you would like to monitor the temperature of your GPU, CPU, HD and Memory check out the iStat Pro widget > http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
The main reason I suspect the lack of RAM over an overheating GPU is because you only reported a problem with the Screen Saver and not with other intense graphic's like movies, videos or games.
Please let us know how you make out with the RAM upgrade.

  • IMac freezes while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do?

Ever since I upgraded to Lion my iMac freezes or nearly freezes for 5 - 10 minutes every hour while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do?
I have tried everything I can think of but its only improved from total freeze while Time Machine backs up to freeze with an occasional few seconds of activity.
I am really fed up with this.

When I first updated to Lion everything was a mess with freezes happenng constantly like every two or three minutes.  Then when looking at the app store I noticed in purchased items that Lion was showing install instead of installed so I downloaded and installed again.
After this install every time Time Machine updated a backup my iMac froze for about 5 or 10 minutes while the backing up was in progress.  I was getting really fed up and started this thread.  Then one morning I got up and the iMac would not start up.  It just sat there with the progress thingy spinning.  I started in T mode to look at it from my MacBookPro and two copies of the HD appeared. Both showing zero files.  I ran Disk utility on the MacBookPro to try to fix the disk.  It showed 8 copies of the disk and all not reparable.
I then created a startup USB drive using my MacBookPro, used it to start up the iMac and restored everything from the previous day's backup.  Since then it has been running smoothly with no freezes so maybe the answer is simply to restore a recent backup.
I am using Imation external drives and I don't believe the problem is drive specific.

  • IMac won't start in mac. Will only start in Windows, option key won't work to allow me to get to mac side. downloaded avast last week. Worried this could be the problem??

iMac was making a strange sound yesterday. I shutdown and restarted now it will only boot in windows vista.  I've tried option key that doesn't work, I've tried command R no luck.  I've left un-plugged, not sure what to do. I don't even get the white screen like it's trying to load, it goes directly to windows vista, once in windows I can't get anywhere to try and go back.  I did download avast the other week, it seemed to be running fine until yesterday. UGH

If you are running OS X "Lion" or later, boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. For Snow Leopard, start your Mac while holding the c key with its original OS X Install DVD inserted in its optical drive.
At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
If you manage to boot OS X, uninstall Avast. Its effect on a Mac has progressed from complete and utter worthlessness to maliciousness.
Be sure to use its latest uninstaller, which will remove it completely.

  • IMac freeze while installing OS upgrade

I have a G5 iMac currently on OS X 10.5.5, I`m trying to upgrade to 10.5.8 via software update, when the installation begins the computer just freezes... the window displays "configuring installation" and the status bar advances a bit and then just stays there. I have more than enough disk space for the installation. Any advice will be appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Run Repair Disk
    1. Insert your Mac OS X Install DVD, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.
The download and run 10.5.8 Combo Update

Get a Virtual Macine software program, Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox, and install XP in a virtual machine.
You can't install XP in a Boot Camp Partition with Lion or Mt Lion, only Win 7.

Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes.  The color wheel comes on and My work stops.  I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot.  I have to shut the computer down the hard way!  when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow.  I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix.  It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything.  My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them.  I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem.  I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing!  Any ideas?

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues...  open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips

  • Windows XP SP3 Freezes After Installation of Nvidia Quadro FX3000

Greetings to all!  I have an older Dell running Windows XP SP3.  It had an Nvidia Quadro FX1000 which began going bad and I replaced with a Quadro FX3000 model.  The drivers I downloaded from Nvidia's web site were the most recent qualified
drivers (yep, they were old, but still the correct drivers).  After of the installation of the card and the drivers Windows boots normally to the logon screen.  After typing in my password Windows tells me its loading my personal settings, then freezes
with no further activity.  I'm unable to use the mouse at that point and can't shut down gracefully.
I can boot successfully into Windows via Safe Mode and log on using my password.  However, the system always hangs after logging on when I just boot straight into Windows without using safe mode.
Can anyone weigh in with a possible reason for this to occur.  It's driving me crazy.  I'm sure the answer is right in front of me, I'm just not seeing it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi!
I know its almost a month since you posted, but I would boot in to safe mode, remove the display drivers and install an older version of the driver. For instance the driver that was released before the latest one.
This has done the trick for me a few times with other hardware!
    Best regards
