IMac Freezes - spinning wheel - Heroku????

I'm having a couple of issues with my iMac desktop.
After it sits idle for a while it freezes.  At first the mouse doesn't respond at all.  Then, if I can get it moving, I get the spinning wheel that won't go away.  I have to end up turning it off, then back on for it to work.  I've had the computer for over 3 years and this just started happening about 2 weeks ago.
Yesterday I got an error message when using Safari -- "Heroku -- No app found".  I have no idea what this means.  Has something hijacked my computer?  Strangely, I've been getting the same error message on my iPad lately!  Could it have something to do with iCloud sharing information on both?  Sorry for the broad questions, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Mac's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

From your description, it seems very likely that the machine is overheating.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Frozen iMac with Spinning Wheel

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Computer freezing with spinning wheel -- Heroku??

    Hi,

This forum category is for Older iPods, so I'm not sure how your post ended up here.  You may want to post another question, by going here first
    https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
and selecting the appropriate forun category, such as your Mac model or Mac OS X version.
I would do two tests.  Start up the Mac in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Although some things will not work in Safe Mode, you can use Safari.  Does this problem happen in Safe Mode?  If it does not, there may be some system extension or background process running when you start up nornally, that is causing this problem.
To further narrow down the cause, start up normally and create a new user account in System Preferences Users & Groups pane.  The new user account can be Admin or Standard.  Log out and log in to the new user account (do not use Fast User Switching).  In the new user account, does this problem occur?  If it does, the cause is likely to be at the system level.  If does not, the cause is likely to be something that runs in the background, when you log in to your usual user account.
Doing these test will allow additional troubleshooting to be more focused.

  • How can I stop laptop freeze/spinning wheel every time I click or type etc?

I sporadically get momentary freeze and or spinning wheel when I try to do anything on the laptop. Sometimes it works fine but the majority of the time it stops on every click. The problem has been persistant for a week or two, possibly related to a mavericks update.
The dock sometimes doesn't work either - it is unresponsive, an appl will bounce but not open.
This occurs enough to be very frustrating and gets in the way of my work.

I backed up all my files, emptied the hard drive and uninstalled/reinstalled Mavericks.
This created another problem - the laptop would not boot up and I got a flashing question mark in a folder on the screen. Eventually I was able to reinstall Lion which then fixed that problem. For a short while there were no problems of latency either (maybe 20 minutes).
I have done disc scans/repairs and there were no problems there. I did an extensive hardware scan as well and no problems were detected.
I don't know much about Apple computers - I've only had this for just under two years and I have had no problems so I'm quite illiterate regarding how to repair it or scan for problems. Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
    <Edited by Host>
Incidentally I have had no freezes since starting to write this post - Lion seems to be more stable than Mavericks was.

  • ITunes 10.6.3 freezes/spinning wheel when I click the 'book' tab for the ipad. HELP!

    Hey all,
Tried searching the net but cannot find a suitable solution to my problem
This problem occurs every now and then, but this time I can't fix it.
When I connect my ipad to my Macbook (2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 2009 running OS 10.5.8) and I try to click any tab (Music/Book/Apps etc) when I have the ipad selected in iTunes - iTunes freezes and I get the spinning wheel of death!
I really need to sync up some documents into ibooks and am getting really frustrated.
I plan to buy a Macbook Pro in the coming months so upgrading iTunes or OS is not something I want to be doing, I just want to be able to sync books without iTunes crashing on me.
Have tried restarting computer and iTunes, checking active and inactive ram in the Activity Monitor but nothing works.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

What version of iTunes do you have on your computer?

I ran an EtreCheck on my laptop and this is what the report said. I've had this laptop for about 4 years and it just started freezing up around a week ago. The spinning wheel pops up every few minutes, slows down everything, and makes it extremely frustating to be using the laptop.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • MacBook Pro freeze/spinning wheel

    Hey everyone,
Yesterday my MacBook Pro started behaving strangely. When I turn it on, it works (very slowly) for around 5-10 minutes, and then the applications freeze and the spinning wheel appears. If I click on anything else (finder, apple logo) at this point the spinning wheel will also appear. I have no other option than to hold down the start-button till it shuts off. Also, everything on the screen (finder windows, desktop icons, etc.) continues to dissapear for a short moment and come back again. The same things happen when in safe-mode. I searched on here and found people with similar problems.
    I'd appreciate any help!
One got it solved when he posted what Etrecheck found, so I've done the same:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1306 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1536 500 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • I am having trouble with computer freezing, spinning wheel.  The only way to get out is to manually shut off computer and reboot.

The issue usually occurs when computer goes into the screensaver mode.  When this happens, none of the keys are opperable and the round wheel/ball just continues to spin.  The only resolve is to manually shut down the computer witht the button on back of the monitor/hard drive.  Not sure if this is bad for the computer to shut down this way or not.

I starting having this "colored spinning wheel" problem too! It started about two weeks ago and like the others, every time I go into my Yahoo mail, I get the spinning-wheel and the only way out is to "X" out of the site. Sometimes I can make it through a few notes, other times the problem starts as soon as I click on the first note. I searched google a few days ago and saw a response to this problem that said I should "uncheck" the 3 items in the "Auto-fill" preferences in Safari (Safari-Preferences-Autofill) and that should help. It did not. I also went in and deleted cookies, cache and history, but that didn't work either, or if it did, it only took a few clicks to experience the problem again. One of the times I went in to delete cookies I noticed over 100 cookies and other website data stored and I had only been on perhaps 2 or 3 sites (CNN, google and yahoo and perhaps Apple), and I never click on the adds. Don't know if there's any significance to this but I thought that was an awful lot of "cookies" for just a few clicks after previously deleting cookies. Also, I believe I have the latest version of Yahoo mail. I actually have 2 Yahoo accounts and the spinning wheel is a problem with both of them, same for my wife. Any help would be very much appreciated.
I have a MacBook Pro purchased last December with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari version 5.1, an Intel core i5 processor, 4 GB of memory and a 320 GB HD with very little loaded on it.

I'm a new Mac User and I've had my Mac for over a year and I just started to get the spinning pinwheel.  It is very frustrating because it stops me every few minutes as I am working on my computer.  I ran the Etrecheck and here are my results:  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

  • My mac keeps freezing (spinning wheel)

    Hiya
So I'm pretty new to this whole Mac malarkey, but even I know that the whole mac isn't meant to freeze, where I can move the cursor around the screen but am unable to click or do anything. Then eventually the colourwheel appears and renders me incapable of doing anything. I waited for a while but nothing changed, so I had to turn it off manually via the off button on the key board.
I'm also finding that (and it's really hard to explain, so I hope you know what I mean) where if I'm flicking through a website, for example Facebook, I click onto a new page, and there are lines/blocks/sections that can be seen of the page I was on previously, as if I printscreened page one and put it on Paint, then print screened the other page and put that on a different file, then picked out random squares/sections of page 1 and pasted them onto page two. That's what it looks like. I'm unable to interact with the current page and I have to refresh the page in order to restore it as waiting does nothing.
Finally, sometimes I maximise the page to full screen from a half screen, but the content on the page stays the same size/shape it was, despite the window itself maximising to full screen. The 'void' area is simply white.
It's no exaggeration when I say that my mac is BRAND new - I've had it for about 3 weeks.
Please help!!! What on earth is going on?!
Any and all help is much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Fay

When i booted into safe mode the problem didnt appear but it was running very slugish and glitch.
logging into account seemed to be fine with no problems.
Most of the application were removed before hand before the problem occured but here is the report.

  • IMac freezes when shutting down

My 3 month old iMac (24" Extreme) freezes (spinning wheel just keeps turning) when I try to Shut Down. Then I have no option but to manually shut down the machine using the power button at the back of the machine.
I have made sure that I quit all applications but the problem persists.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Many thanks in advance for help.
I'm having a similar problem. I shut down my iMac at the end of the day (we have a lot of power outages here). The last few days, after I choose "Shut down," it won't -- the screen displays the screen saver (desktopia) but no dock or menu bar. Sometimes the cursor is a spinning wheel, but more often it's an arrow.
Just to be infuriating, the problem is intermittent.
Finally, I just did the latest update (QuickTime 7.5, AirPort Utility 5.3.2, and Digital Camera Raw Compatibility) which required a restart. It went to the screen saver minus dock routine (above), then to a plain light-blue screen.
It seems to work fine when I manually restart.
    Here's the console stuff:

  • IMac freezes when syncing iPod touch

My iMac freezes (spinning beach ball) when I attempt to sync iPod Touch, using iTunes 10.5.  Otherwise, iMac, iTunes, and iPod Touch work fine.
iPod Touch 3rd Gen., IOS 4.3
iMac 21", new in Dec. 2010
    Snow Leopard

    Oh another thing:
It does step 1 ok (backing up) but when it starts downloading apps (step 2) is the problem. The first few apps end up downloading but iTunes freezes like 5 times during the process... After a few apps comes the white screen and everything... Once the iPod is removed and iTunes it closed, the background comes back and everything  goes back to normal. Nothing is erased from the iPod either.
    Thought that would help.
