  • IMac freezes and emits horn sound

We have a very strange issue with our iMac. Every now and again it freezes and emits a strange horn sound (http://db.tt/cy1lI5Z) – sort of like a car horn, in series of three bursts about a second apart, each series about 2 seconds apart. It's quite bizarre. The only way to stop the sound is to hold down the power button until the machine shuts down.
The issue is not OS-X version related: we're running Lion but it also happened under Snow Leopard. I has only happened about four times in the last year.
Can't see any strange messages in Console – at least not that I understand.
Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to resolve this before the machine is out of warranty in a couple of months, but can't see the point of taking it into a store because there's nothing to show them with such a rare issue.

Thanks for the update Mark. That puts me in a bit of a bind because I've added non-OEM memory to my iMac. So if I take it in for repair and they find the additional memory at fault, I guess they'll charge me big time.
That said, if yours is a memory issue it is presumably with the original memory?
There must be a way to do a thorough test of memory modules? Anyone know of a good way to do this (beyond AHT)?
EDIT: Just found references to Memtest on Google. Will try that first.
Would appreciate any further updates, Mark.

  • IMAC freezing, hang during startup, loud noise coming out from the speaker

I am using the iMAC i3 Intel based which i bought it just a month ago
Last week it hang, freeze just like that without me launch any application just yet
I hold the ON button for a restart, and it freeze during the startup
One more thing, sometimes when it freeze, there's a noise coming out from the speaker ( just like there is no signal from the TV )
Already sent it to the Apple Service Center but they tell me it is free from any error, but by the time i bring it back home, not even 12 hours, it freeze again just like that with loud noises coming out from the speaker.
Btw did i mention, sometimes there's also a screen distortion
    Please somebody help me

I've experienced similar symptoms to the original poster's description. I have an iMac 27" 2010 model. This may be related to the following:
I've looked on numerous forums regarding the freezing problem I was having. This problem would arise on a wide range of systems.
Symptoms included but were not all always present - usually when I am loading the system with games/heavy load processes:
    - Full system freeze, screen still on.
    - Loud cracking noise coming from speakers (relative to what volume was at when the freeze happened).
    - Computer asleep but I cannot wake up unless hard reset with power button.
    - My screen backlight was also damaged (permanently dimmed) near the left side, and progressively got worse over time. This was fixed (replaced LCD 27" display $600+ and covered by my creditcard extended warranty)
Basically, what I've come to realize which has not been well documented as far as I could find relating to this problem - is that the system is overheating and causing these freezing errors (and LCD damage in my case). Prologned occurances could result in different system part failures.
How do you fix the overheating problem? Give this a try, it's worked so far for me and I've actually been able to continue video/photo editing without having this annoying freeze.
Search for and download 'iStat Pro' (widget addon that lets you monitor your system temperatures... compare it before and after the fix)
Search for and download 'SMCFanControl (a great little app that allows you to change your system fan speeds) - I did not know this was possible, and have never heard the fans go this high when it was being run automatically by the system. The fan's are obviously louder when set to max, but is well worth the system cooling results.

  • Arm record and the meters top out and a loud sound comes out

    Hi
I have tried to record but just get a loud sound and the meters max out when arming a track to record. I am using a Digi 002 rack into my Imac. Playback of demo files works fine. Help
    thks
    Al

Sounds like your getting feedback. First make sure your using the Digi and not the built in mic.
Turn down your monitors, keep mic as far away from the monitors or use headphones to monitor.

  • Imac freezing up and delete Iphoto

Since i upgraded to the new LIon . My computer deleted IPhoto during the update. Now have to buy it back. It also has been freezing up and the tractpad also! / I have to push the power button to kill it then puch the space bar to reopen the screen to where i had it. Then things work. sometimes it does it 4 or 5 times in a row. I have all the latest updates weekly. Nothing works to fix it but the power button and space bar.

You may need to replace the PRAM battery.  Bring it in for service.

  • Can I connect imac to HDMI and also Surround sound also through HDMI using the thunderbolt sockets via an adaptor into a HDMI?

I want to be able to connect my imac to my TV and Surround Sound, from what I have read the best want of doing this is both via HDMI. Before I go out and buy another adaptor for a second thunderbolt to HDMI I was wondering if this would work? I basically I want to be able to stream videos from Imac to TV with sound coming through surround sound and also when I am on itunes have the music come through the surround sound. At the moment I have an adaptor (thunderbolt to HDMI) which goes into the TV and a optical cable from TV into the surround sound, then I also have a 3.5mm from the imac to the Surround sound, but I find this lacks in quailty. Would upgrading to a HDMI work and be better ? Should I also look into an optical cable though I dont see how to connect this to the imac?

OK. From what I can tell here, the Sony HT-SF2000 has 3 HDMI inputs & one HDMI output, so the simplest hookup would be to connect the iMac to one of the the Sony's HDMI inputs via the Thunderbolt-HDMI adaptor, & connect the Sony's HDMI output to the TV's HDMI input.
Use the Sony like an HDMI input selector for the TV (plugging in your other HDMI devices, if any, to it). Use the HDMI input on it from the iMac for both movie & iTunes sound output, & for TV output for video. (You can even use the TV as a second screen for the iMac.)
If for some reason you want a separate input for the iMac's sound output, you can use the optical input on the Sony for that, with a TOSLINK cable connection to the iMac. You will need either a Mini-TOSLINK adaptor or a TOSLINK to mini-TOSLINK cable to connect to the audio output of the iMac.

  • Imac freezing up and screen dissolve issues

    Hi all,
My imac intel keeps freezing up for no reason and then won't let you force quit anything.
It still seems to do things in the background like import cds to itunes and download items.
Sometimes it also freezes and then the screen slowly dissolves to bright white and then restarts itself.
Has anyone come across this before.
The imac is about 6 years old.
    Thanks in advance.

If your Mac ame with an Install Sisc, AHT hw test should be on one of them.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Intel iMac freezes, reboots and other issues

Intel iMac 17" 1.83 Ghz model (Had for a while now)
1 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM installed (Mac detects this fine)
    Mac OS X 10.4.8
Beginning yesterday, the Mac froze when shutting World of Warcraft (which had been installed and working for at least two months). Computer completely hung. Restarted machine.
A few minutes later, the machine just switched itself off (or appeared to) - screen goes black. I held in power button for five seconds until I heard a click in the machine. This has happened repeatedly.
One time, the machine froze and the monitor refreshed at a visible rate (I could see the scan line) - each time the screen got darker.
Often, it will turn on, but the OS won't load unless I hold Alt down, or if I use OptionAlt+PR.
Ran disk utility from the install disk, only minor issues, all fixed. The problem of turning off still occurred.
Nothing in the kernel panic log. Diagnostics in System Profiler is saying it passes on the power on self test.
The confusing thing is, that after last night, I pulled the plug out, went to bed, praying to the computer fairy to fix it. This morning, it ran fine continuously for about 8 hours, running WoW, IRC app, iTunes etc. all fine.
Could it be a power supply issue? Is the thing overheating (the Mac is up to date with EFI Firmware update and SFC Firmware update).
I'm utterly stumped as to what's causing it. I don't want to send the thing off as then I'm without a computer.
    Any ideas or advice?

    Has it done it since?

  • IMac freezes and emits a loud scream

If my iMac is left on when I am not actively using it, after some time it will freeze up and emit a loud scream; it has to be disconnected in order to silence it; it may then be restarted. This phenomenon is unpredictable and can happen even when I am using the machine, or in the middle of playing a DVD. It is not something that I can reproduce at will and I have therefore not taken it in for technical attention as it can run for hours without showing any symptoms. The same thing can happen when it is running in the Windows part of the HD.
Has anybody else experienced something like this?

Thanks for the update Mark. That puts me in a bit of a bind because I've added non-OEM memory to my iMac. So if I take it in for repair and they find the additional memory at fault, I guess they'll charge me big time.

  • 2007 iMac freezes up, rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve?

My circa 2007 iMac freezes up, and rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales).

  • TNT (551 & 51) Freezing, Pixelating, and No Sound Randomly!

Since around noon today when I first turned on TNT to watch the Nascar race and pre-race show the channel has constantly been freezing, pixeling and having no sound.  It happens multiple times a minute.  I'm not having this problem with any other channel and I haven't received any other errors or problems from either of my two boxes, so I know it's the channel and not my boxes.  What's going on and when will this be fixed!?!?

No clue. Since this is a customer-helping-customer forum it is doubtful any of us can give you an answer.
Where are you located? Not happening here, although with the rain delay I did not watch 551 100% of the time until about 15 minutes ago (but each time I did go to 551 I did not see any problems).

I have a pixma mg5220 all in one printer. Error code 5012 shows and a loud sound occurs. Running windows8.1 on hp smarttouch 15 812, MIGHT BE b12  It's hard to read. This happens rarely, but when it does, I don't know when it will start to work again. Any suggestions, please?

Hi roxyoung56, To try and resolve the error, please turn off the printer, unplug the power cord and wait for at least 10 minutes, then reconnect the power cord and turn the unit back on again.  If the error still displays, the printer will require servicing.  Please call or email us at one of the methods on the Contact Us page to obtain your servicing options.

  • My IMac freezes up

My IMac freezes up and then it gets little lines and squares all over the screen and all I can do is shut it down.  since it is over 7years old I don't know if I should spend the money to get it looked at or buy a new computer .    Thisstarted after I hooked up a router for this IPad.

Sounds like a heat issue, have you blown the dust out lately?
Is this a G5 iMac? Not sure how many sensors it has, but...

  • Imac freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans

My Imac G5 non intel 20" freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans start and it won't boot. just have the logo on the grey screen.
I've tried resetting Pram - think that was the right thing to do?
I've tried disk utility, but it won't settle for me to choose the hard drive, it kind of sticks and keeps rotating the wheel.
    any ideas anyone?
    please help.

Lots of things you can try - first, try resetting the SMU. Next, boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and try to verify and repair your hard drive. If that doesn't work, try running the Apple Hardware Test on one of your install discs.
Also, depending on which model you have, you may be eligible for Apple's power supply or video and power issues.
    Please post back with results,

  • Frozen screen and emitting series of 3 loud beeps.

My Mac is suddenly freezing and emitting series of 3 loud beeps. It's not when I start up and seems to happen randomly. Sometimes I'm doing  bunch of things, but sometimes I'm not doing anything (and have no other programs open) except watching a movie. (one that was already on my computer, not one i'm streaming)
Each time it does this I have to shut my computer down and restart it atleast twice before it'll work again. Help!!!
PS i just had the logic board replaced a few days ago, could it have something to do with that?

But it's not when I start the computer. It's starts fine and then once it's been running for awhile it freezes and emmits the beeps, Almost claxon like sounds. It also doesn't do it everytime i'm using my computer, or when i'm doing something specific.
