Imac freezes up but mouse still works

I've got an imac with Snow Leopard on it.  It has started to freeze up quite a bit, maybe once every two days.  There are four profiles on the computer and it happens to them all.  I have reparied permissions in each profile and run the Hardware test both standard and extended and it returned zero problems.  I've reset the PRAM and NVRAM.  When it freezes up the only thing that still works is the mouse.  It moves the pointer but clicking doesn't do anything.  Trying to force quit applications doesn't do anything.  I tried unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in, thinking maybe it wasn't really freezing but just a bad keyboard but that didn't do anything--and neither does rightclicking on anything.
What else can I try?  I'd be willing to post a log file if someone would tell me the right one to post.

Disconnect all unneeded peripherals (firewire, usb).
Try smc and pram reset.
Next boot from you installer dvd or lion recovery partition (you didn't specify what OS you are using) or an external bootable backup and try to verify/repair your drive(s) with Disk Utility (not repair permissions -- it's a waste of time and doesn't repair anything in your login accounts anyhow).
Boot in safe mode to see if there are still problems.  If not reboot normally.

  • PC keeps freezing but mouse still works...

So my PC keeps crashing, sometimes when I turn it on straight away, sometimes after a few minutes, very rarely it doesn't crash.
However when it crashes, my mouse still works, I can still move it around. Sometimes on Chrome for example I can still click links, but they won't load.
In other apps the PC totally crashes when I click something.
I've tried drivers, firmware updates, it's definitely not overheating. Just cannot work out what the issue is.
I've got an SSD but not had any issues from it but i'm worried it could be this or the motherboard.
The red light on the front of my PC that flashes when my PC is working just goes solid red when it crashes, and the only fix then is a hard reboot. Very frustrating, especially if i'm in the middle of something.
Anyone got any ideas or ways I can test what the issue is?
    Thank you,
    Liam.
Edit to say i'm on Windows 7.
Edit again to say i've done Chkdsk on my SSD and it seemed OK...

    After the above
I would update the SSD firmware and run windows performance recorder (if you can when you are having the problem) and it does run in win 7.
In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (Windows Performance Toolkit)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652
Help with installation (if needed) is here
When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage (if available), CPU usage, Disk IO.
If your problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)  Please configure yours as per the below snip
    Click Start
Let it run for 60 secs or more and save the file (it will show you where it is being saved and what the file is called)
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.

  • TS4135 Imac freezes but mouse still work.

My Imac freezes everytime I try to load an app. Rather its a webpage on safari, playing videos on sites, iTunes, photobooth etc. I can't even load the applications folder without it freezing on me. The dock & keyboard shortcuts are frozen too. The only thing that moves is the mouse cursor, but its no good if I can't open or close anything. I wiped out my Imac to factory settings, thinking it would clear ram/men space and that didn't help. Sigh. I need help. What can I do? What should I do? Is this a firmware or system update problem? Help me please!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Imac screen blackout but computer still working..Helpp

I'am writing this due to the fact that I couldn't find my specific issue on any forum or area of the apple community. This happened last night after a bad storm knocked out the electricity while my computer was on. When I turned my computer back on this morning, I could hear the "Rev Up"/Start Sound and Next I would see the startup screen/password box that I normally would see, but it only flashed for a second then the screen went black. But the computer doesn't shut down, everything stays on! I can even put in the OS X utility Disk and eject it, I even tried to hold down the C key to activate it And it sounds like its working but the screen stays black. After I tried this, I manually tried to shut the computer down, but when I do, it immediatly goes into hibernation mode. When I go to turn it on again, I see my same log in screen, for a quick second then the screen goes Black again. It seems like the computer is working, like as if I could log on and use my computer, but just can't see anything because the SCREENS ALL BLACK! Im even thinking maybe to purchase a DVI to ACD cord in order to set up a seperate monitor in order to see if I can still access my computer...Any ideas anyone?? Or anywhere someone could direct me..or has this happened to anyone?.. Major Thanks in advance apple community, you never let me down.

  • Macbook pro(intel based) all apps hang but mouse still work

My Macbook Pro(intel) running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 has started hanging after the last OS upgrade.  All apps stop responding but the mouse pointer contines to function, though mouse click doesn't respond as all apps are not responding.
    Any ideas or suggestion?

Yes, I have this problem as well. Although it only happens once I have resumed the computer from standby/sleep mode.
I haven't contacted Apple yet as it has only happened again recently and I put the first time down to a once off. I really hope this is not a hardware issue as I am already suffering from airport related kernel panics.
Anyway, from browsing the internet somebody mentioned that disabling "accidental input" in System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse may solve the problem. I have done that and it hasn't happened again yet. Although, this is not an ideal solution.
Please let me know if you hear of any developments. I was hoping that switching to Mac might get rid of all my computer troubles (previously XP) but all I've had is problem after problem .

  • I have an issue where coloured dots (small squares) appear on my screen and it gets to the point where the entire screen freezes although the mouse still moves but nothing works and I need to turn the computer off at the switch. Any ideas?

Reset the SMC and PRAM, if the issue continues then you likely have a failing GPU (hardware) that requires repair. To be sure take it in and have it professionally assessed.

I am running Mac OS X Lion on a brand new Mini.  Every now and then, my keyboard goes "dead."  The mouse still works but I can't type.  If I restart, everything is fine again.  Is there anything that will fix this problem?
Also, I am trying to connect my Mini from the mini-Displayport to the Displayport of my Dell U2410 monitor.  The image is very grainy, even though it is set to the correct resolution: 1920 X 1200 at 60Hz.  If I use HDMI to VGA input, the image is much clearer.  Is there a way to get the Displayport to work?

I'm having exactly the same keyboard issue.  Certainly nothing has ever enhanced my concentration while coding like suddenly becoming unable to type.
I'm seeing a great many devicemgr and rake errors in my system log.  I don't know if they're related.  How 'bout you?
If you're unfamiliar with the system log…
    Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
If necessary, choose View > Show Log List.
system.log is at the top of the FILES section.
Try searching it for hot words like DEBUG, FATAL, and aborted.
I've found some discussions that would tend to indicate my errors are postGres related – I'm running OS X server.

Well, if you've indeed tried EVERYTHING, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for evaluation.

Recurring theme with the 4s losing alerts except for the phone ringing.  Most complaints seem to center on the 7.1 upgrade.  The fix is dodgy, putting in a charger, playing a you tube video then pulling out the charger and wiggling it until you get the sound back.  When you get the sound back, the volume buttons start to work again.  Alternate solutions involve cleaning the docking port with a toothbrush, running a pick over the electrodes etc.

What country are you in ? The price for repair (i.e. replacement) for the iPad 3 and 4 appears to be around the €300 mark
If you select your country at the top of this page, then select the 'Warranty & Service Pricing' section on the left of the screen, and then 'My iPad is not eligible for warranty service' section on the right, you should be able to see the price in your country.

I dropped my macbook pro 17" from about 4 feet from my shelf onto a hard floor and it dinged the corner pretty bad, but it still works OK. a year back also it fell of from 1ft height but that time there was not any dent. my worry is will it give any prop in future or its just a cosmetic issue but in performance it wont give any problems. it happened an hr back & i am very upset for this misshandling.

I dropped a MBP and dented that same corner, though it wasn't one of the unibody MBPs:
It worked flawlessly for a month, then suddenly died.  I put it to sleep one day, then 5 minutes later remembered something I had forgotten to do, opened it back up...  and nothing.  It never worked again.  Repairs would have been well over $1,000, and would not have been covered by the warranty or by AppleCare (if I had bought it).  I opted to just buy a new Mac instead.
Now, just because that happened to me does not mean that's what will happen to you.  However, you do need to prepare yourself for that possibility.
