IMac freezing problem.

Hi all, since upgrading to Mountain Lion my iMac keeps freezing every now and then and seems to be getting worse.
I upgraded to 10.9 Maverick a couple days ago but that didn't help either.
Anyone have any ideas what could cause it if it's not the OS?
My machine specs:

Guys
I've had exactly the same issues crashing and freezing all the time... I've determined its OS X Mavericks and how its handling the Comrpessed RAM Its gotta be releated to this its the only explanation...
http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/advanced-technologies/
(Make sure you've backed everything up but)... Today to fix my Mac was:
Run the battery down to zero so it turned itself off. Easily done when installing Ubuntu (Which by the way runs great on Mbp 2010 15") or just leave it turned on doing something. NOT IMPORTANT... I was just being sure all the cached (Compressed RAM) had been cleared from the chips....
Format the Disk with 1 Partition
Reinstall with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 fresh from App store download i used Lion Disk maker 2.0.2 to make a installerable USB...
Check Console for any (FIXME) errors after install ( At nearly a days heavy use now and there isn't a single error in sight...)
See my screenshot for proof... Not a single Fixme UTF issue in sight on Mountain Lion now... I've done as much testing as i can physically do now im just going to reinstall all my apps are use the system for a month or so unitl they release Mavericks 10.9.2 and see if they have addressed the memory faults...

  • Imac freezing problems

Basically, the first thing I noticed was (after syncing and charging my ipod) the screen of my ipod had 2 or 3 gray colored lines running across the screen. Lately, I’ve noticed that my desktop iMac periodically has the same lines, (from time to time) when surfing the internet (via Safari). The biggest problem now is opening new window boxes … i.e. opening a itunes, iphoto, or searching my hard drive while I already have Safari open. My iMac would consistently freeze as I was trying to add any jpeg pictures attachments to my Facebook page and while I tried to attach files to emails. The drop down box, which comes down, displaying everything in my hard drive, would (9 times out of 10) freeze midway through … so I could see half the hard drive box. The iMac then needed to be manually restarted, and on occasion it would restart itself. Also, I notice while pulling Youtube or Netflix fullscreen, the screen itself usually freezes or just goes to black and needs to be restarted.
    Thanks for the help!

I would do some basic repairs for starts.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • IMac freezing on wake

Seems to be getter worse every update.
I'm currently using 10.5.5 on a iMac 3.06 Core2Duo, and I have to reset with the power switch several times a day. It freezes up when waking from sleep. Works for a few seconds, but then stops responding with the eternal beachball. Safari seems to be the culprit since it's always what starts the beachball. Anyone else have these issues?

    subject: iMac freezing/ iTunes freeing/ Safari freezing/ app store crashing/ iTunes crashing/hanging
    Good afternoon,
I am investigating the same problem for more than two weeks.
    Might have found the solution...
    And this solution is odd!
I haven't had freezing problems with an iMac Intel dual core with OS-X 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.01
Neither with a MacPro PowerPC with OS-X 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.01.
Neither with a Macbook Pro Intel with OS-X 10.5.5. and iTunes 8.01
Neither with other Intel or PowerPC machines.
    HOWEVER:
I had major freezing problems with a iMac PowerPC with OS-X 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.01.
And I read a lot of discussion posts from other users with likewise problems
with OS-X 10.4 and 10.5, Intel and PowerPC and even in Windowx XP.
Whatever I did: nothing helped/ or the solution did not last for long.
Even a clean format and clean installation did not helped.
My iMac freezed using Safari, iTunes, PDF viewer and so on.
    Or using other programms.
    Randomly.
Sometimes the iMac even freezes before I logged in with name and password.
Only by holding the on/off button pushed for a couple of seconds, I was able to restart
(since the mouse cursor and keyboard did not worked).
Force Quit did not work either.
    A Hardware problem?
    No. Checked and double checked.
Reset all (epr)rom's/ram's in the machine.
    Even resetted the power supply.
Log files report about different errors:
    - EXCBADACCESS + KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE
(a thread trying to write to read-only memory. This is always caused by a data access).
    - start before command
    - exited abnormally: Hangup
    - and, a more interesting error, USB caused wake event (EHCI)
The last error has a relation with the problem you have:
    *freezing when waking from sleep.*
I found (probably) the solution and the cause:
_iTunes and the (USB) related programming in iTunes....._
Since I tried my solution (see her under) the iMac DOES NOT FREEZE ANYMORE!
Hope it works for you too!
    *Please let me know.*
    Good luck,
    kind regards,
    Danny

Wait for the new Apple iTunes version
or: download an older iTunes version and use this one til Apple solved the problem
    See for instance:

  • If I try to send attachments on my Yahoo email, my iMac freezes up. I don't have the problem with my MacBook Pro.

If I try to send attachments on my Yahoo email, my iMac freezes up. I don't have the problem with my MacBook Pro.

The file format used by the iOS versions of the iWork apps can only be read by the new iWork apps on your Mac - i.e. Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. Those versions for the Mac require Mavericks, OS X 10.9. The "too old" error on a Mac comes if you are trying to open an iWork '08 or earlier file in the newest apps. If you do have the newest apps you can open the files from your iPad.
If you can't or don't want to upgrade to Mavericks & the newest iWork apps your best option would be to export/share the files from the iPad to a type an older version of iWork can read such as Word, text, Excel, etc.
Or contact AppleCare. They made this mess, let them fix it.

I have disabled Safari Extensions, and didn't succeed to remove Avira's kext file, but as I said, I have experienced this freezes before I had Avira.
I don't think that is the problem.
Can anyone help me and recommend what else should I do? This thing is quite annoying. My iMac is my workplace and constant freezes are frustrating.
    Thanks in advance

  • IMac Freezing - No video glitch, but unresponsive

    Good morning all,
In the past week or so, I've started to have problems with my iMac freezing. This has occurred while using iChat, playing World of Warcraft and while using Safari (not all at once).
In short, the video display seems to freeze. I can still hear audio (ie. the other person on iChat speaking), but everything else in non-responsive. The keyboard does not respond and I cannot ALT-Tab or open any other programs. My only recourse is to manually turn off the computer and try again.
It's usually a guaranteed failure when opening up Warcraft. About 4 seconds after the program has opened, the computer freezes.
I've searched the forums and have come across several threads that involve some sort of graphical glitch, from which I do not suffer. That being said, I thought a new thread might be appropriate.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

My iMac has been repeatedly freezing when I am working in Final Cut Express. It plays the sound but freezes the video. It has been a horrible experience to try to edit 'blind'!
I have vacuumed the air vents, installed smcFan Control (great to manual adjust fan speeds on all 3 internal fans), re-installed Snow Leopard & gone through copious hours as all the software updates each time I've re-installed, and I run the disc doctor program. It started happening around the time Steve Jobs said Apple would no longer use Flash. I thought it a Flash issue since it only has to do with the playback of video. Today I discovered that clips I downloaded yesterday were also freezing in my desktop Picasa. Meaning it's not Final Cut, or Picasa, and unlikely my video card as all videos streamed from the NET (on YouTube, etc) play fine, and in fact my videos that freeze on my iMac when uploaded to YouTube or Facebook play fine.
I am enormously and thoroughly frustrated, as you can imagine. I had 15 clips from the G20 Protest March yesterday and was not able to make an adequate video to upload out of them because the video keeps freezing, and losing synch with the audio - and every time you try to play it, it freezes in a different spot!!
    Horrendous problem.
Today, then, following advice in this thread, I will try re-installing back an update or so on OSX - I'm using 10.6.4, and perhaps need to go backwards?
This is an awful problem and I am surprised Apple hasn't addressed it. Perhaps it only relates to computers a few years old?
A usually very happy iMac user who is very disgruntled these days...

  • IMac freezing - using 10.5 with newest 24" Intel

I've read a lot of posts about iMacs freezing and they seem to be mainly with the older gen's of them.
In my case, my 24" Intel iMac freezes and the mouse will not move, the force quit won't work as the keyboard doesn't respond, nothing works, basically I just have a screen and nothing happens.
I can only force shut down and restart the computer. The same problem has happened at least once to my wife and she did the same thing except put the computer to sleep with the power button and restarted with the power button and she got a message that the mouse wasn't synced up with the bluetooth.
Can this problem have anything related to using the wireless mouse and keyboard? I also read something about issues with freezing and that it was addressed with the newest software update.
    thanks for the help

    Hello,
*"restarted with the power button and she got a message that the mouse wasn't synced up with the bluetooth"*
To set up a Bluetooth device to work with your computer:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and then click Bluetooth.
    Click Add +
Choose the type of device you want to set up and follow the onscreen instructions and when you are finished restart the iMac.
    If the iMac still freezes...
Try resetting the SMC, instructions here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
Try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, instructions here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Check the hard disk. Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
*"Can this problem have anything related to using the wireless mouse and keyboard? I also read something about issues with freezing and that it was addressed with the newest software update"*
The most recent software update was for iTunes, so I'm not sure which software update you are referring to.

  • Keep getting message - You need to restart your computer - iMac freezes

My iMac freezes without notice, a dark screen comes over the monitor and the message "you need to restart your computer" appears.
This happens randomly and I have no idea what causes this. I thought perhaps it was just a loose power cord, as the cord does seem quite loose.
However, it happens after the machine has been running for some time. Before I have a chance to save my work, the computer tells me it has to shut down. It's not a consistent thing, so it's hard to know if it's the cord or not.
This also happened half way through watching a DVD. Nothing was touched or moved, so it wouldn't appear that this is being caused by a loose cord.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? (I'm running Tiger on this machine with 700+ megs of RAM plus am using a Mac keyboard. Airport is installed but not in use.

    Hi there,
I would first make sure your Mac is or isn't on any list contained here: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/imac.html - you may in fact have a faulty power supply which is covered by repair extension through Apple.
    Here's a brief explanation on a Kernel Panic: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227

  • IMac freezes in games

    Hallo,
I have a problem with my iMac, since the 10.7.2 update my iMac is freezing in games that I'm playing.
This games are not even heavy graphic games:
    - Day of Defeat: Source
    - Football Manager 2012 Demo
    - Uberstrike
I already did Apple Hardware Test(also the extended one), twice AHT was telling me that all hardware is fine.
Funny thing is it happens after 10 - 15 min. Every time Didn't try other games yet but probably the same happens.
So I'm also not really sure if this is a hardware or software problem. Every time it freezed my iMac was still at a very normal operating temperature.
I have this iMac since the beginning of the year and being playing a lot on it without problems before the update to 10.7.2
    My Specs:
    iMac 27-inch, mid 2010 model
    i7 2.93 GHz
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2
1 TB (from which 769 GB is free)
    AHT: No problems found
Diagnostics on start-up: No problems found
    Smart Utility: Overall status: Passed
Did somebody experience the same problems? Is there something else I can try to find the problem?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi, Jon W. Barto
    just two remarks:
    a) the hardware test of apple does not find all
problems; it frequently tests hardware good, which
isn't. so it is ok, if it tells you about a hardware
problem, but it might be not ok, if everything tests
    fine.
    b) you are certainly aware that you can check the
memory use with the system monitor. thsi might help
you to identify whether you freezing problems are
caused by a shortage in RAM.
My iMac was running with 1 GB of RAM... I don't think there was a shortage. Also, I cannot use System Monitor (you mean Activity Monitor) while I am playing a game.
    c) (I apparently cannot count: a, b, c is more than
    2)
could it be a logic board problem? How old is your
iMac? you are certainly aware as a long user of macs,
that the iMac G5 had some bad batches, and there is
an extended garantee, if you machine falls into these
batches. check the Apple pages for mor info about
    this.
Mine is a rev B iMac... my RMS (I think that's what it's called) did fall under the Power Supply extended warranty agreement, but it is not a power supply issue. The lady at the Apple Store said that it might be the logic board also.
please, report back with the outcome.
    Thomas
BTW, does anyone know if replacing the logic board will solve the problem permanently, or is it a temp. solution until it craps out again?

  • My Imac freezes 5 x a day at least... please help!!!

    Hello,
I'm pulling my hair out because I use my Imac for all my work. Everyday I hold down the reset button *at least 5 times* because the Imac freezes.
    -Updated all software
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Bought another gig of ram
-Won't completely verify disk, says: *Error: underlying task reported failure on exit, 1HFS volume needs repair*
    - Won't allow me to repair disk
What I don't get is that when things freeze, I hit force quit and they don't quit?!! I mean the little black arrow remains underneath the icon. Then I hit "restart" in menu and it won't restart, it just freezes. I thought that was the whole point of force quitting?
So after the screen just freezes blue with the black spinning icon, I have to hold the reset button. Sometimes I don't even get that far, I have to do it on the desktop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! The guy at the computer store said good luck when I asked if anyone in town fixed Macs, lol!

+Won't allow me to repair disk+
It is a different procedure from repairing permissions, which was not the problem, but which you did correctly perform. You can only repair disk using Disk Utility on another volume, not from the same volume, and the other volume must be the same version of OS X.
If you are still using Tiger 10.4.11, not Leopard or SL, boot from your grey-labeled Install Disc and after the first screen there will be a menu bar at the top that includes a Utilities menu from which you can choose Disk Utility. You will be able to try the Repair Disk button, and you should run it completely through at least twice to see if you can get it repaired.
Then quit and restart, don't continue further into the install process. Eject the Install Disc.
If your OS X is now Leopard or SL, make sure that you use the same disc that installed your current OS X.

  • IMac Freezes in everything other than Windows 7

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My iMac was running Snow Leopard and Windows 7 via Boot Camp successfully with no issues until yesterday. The iMac froze in Snow Leopard and I had to manually reboot by holding down power button.
Since then OS X won't run, Windows is still OK. If I select OS X the iMac freezes on the grey screen. I've tried safe mode and still no joy as it freezes on the grey screen as well.
If I place my OS X 10.6 install disk in the dvd drive it reads the disk, stays on the grey screen and after 2 minutes I then get the Kernel panic screen to reboot. Tried on a 10.5 Install disk in case disk was the problem but it does the same thing (windows install disk works fine, so DVD player OK).
Have also reset PROM and NVRAM. Rebooted machine using cmd S into Linux to check disk and it found no issues.
Anyone got any other ideas. I have a full time machine backup so trashing the hard disk if I could would be OK.

Just managed to get the cmd v command working but only with placing the OS X install disk in. It shows a long list of directories and folders that it tries to find the number of files but it can't count due to missing folder.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 has done something. I would love to get this machine in a position so I can wipe the whole disk as if new and reinstall OS X but as I mentioned before I get the Kernal panic if I place an OS X install disk in

  • Imac freezes in sleep mode

Ever since installing Lion my Imac freezes when in sleep mode. Has anyone had the same problem and been able to fix it

Yes, I have the same problem sometimes, along with numerous others. It appears to be a bug with Bluetooth failing to wake up.
The 'fix' that works for me and others on here, according to responses on the forum, is to go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'Computer sleep' to 'never'. For me, this provides a totally reliable solution that I can live with until Apple come up with a fix (hopefully).

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • My imac freezes after 5 minutes of use

my imac freezes after 5 minutes of use, that's including after i reboot.  is there something that i'm not doning because it's freezing on all my programs.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
