IMac Freezing Several Times a Day
My iMac is freezing several times a day. It started out just when I went to wake it from sleep in the morning, but now it is more often. I read about similar issues on the discussion boards and have taken the following actions: I have gone into Disk Utility and run "Verify Disk" and received "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok." I also used the Activity Monitor to check CPU activity, RAM availability, Hard Disk availability, etc. and everything seems fine there (57.4 GB open). However, when I checked Console Messages, there have been none since 1/16 at 4:37pm. It has been over a month since the freezing issue has been going on (& becoming more frequent) so I wonder if there is a relation/cause there? Any help welcome -- thanks!

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the Startup right after that for clues.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Firefox freezes several times a day on my Imac so that I have to close it by force quit.
I have used several versions of firefox and each one freezes several times each day on my Imac. The only add on I use is the Ebay sidebar. When Firefox freezes the only answer is to "force Quit".
I do not have this problem with any other search engine (safari, opera,chrome).http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs

Upgraded to Lion, my iMac early 2009 freeze several times a day
Hi all,
Since my upgrade to Lion (1.6.8 -> 1.7.3 and now 1.7.4), my iMac 2009 freeze several times a day.
the screen (wallpaper and windows) change of color ... i saw some artifacts and ... a moment, my mouse stops to move, my only way is to reboot my iMac.
before my upgrade, my iMac ran a week without a reboot .. :-!In addition to having adequate RAM did you repair disk permissions after the updates? If not then please run Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and run Repair Disk Permissions, I would recommend doing so 2x. If you see messages, you can normally disregard them per Apple's Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore advice letter.

My MBP "13 freezes several times a day
My MBP "13 freezes several times a day. Suddenly the spinning ball apears fro 2-3 minutes, then disappear for 30 secs and re-appearing for 2 minutes. There seam to be no pattern in which software is running at the time this occours. I have just installed new RAM and I have 150 gig available on my 500 gig HDD.
Anyone?
G:-)Hey,
My advise would be to open Activity monitor, look at what takes up the most threads while you're working normally. See if there are any background apps causing overloads, also look at how much of the RAM is being addressed in the system memory tab.
Alternatively if you find that very little of the computers CPU is being used and in this case i would advise verifying and repairing your disk permissions through Disk Utility
Finally if this doesn't fix your issue, you may be looking at a software issue. Are you running 10.8? Upgrading may address and fix your issue.
350GB is still a fair amount of information for the computer to process. You can also move your non immediate date onto an external harddrive to save internal space. Things like iphoto library, itunes library, films and
i agree with clintonfrombirmingham it could be signs of a failing harddrive. Make a backup and see Apple. -
IMac hangs several times a day
I have problems with my imac (late 2012). The iMac hangs several times a day. The messages (console) are different.

Does anyone know a reason?Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previo' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. -
IMac crashes several times per day. What is causing the issue?
Here is the error report.
I am always prompted to "report this issue to Apple" but never hear back as to what the issue actually is.
Can someone decipher the "crash report"?
Thank you!

"pages" freezes repeatedly during the day on my iPad. is tgere a patch, a fix?
Try quitting Pages then reset the iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.
Then reset your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem. -
Gwia abends or freezes several times a day - imap ssl
Hello,
current system - NW6.5 sp8 - 3 node cluster - GW8.0.3 hp3 - gwia running in it's own address space
Our GW install had been stable for long time running 8.0.2 hp3. Then two changes were made to support some new clients that required IMAP and SMTP in a secure way.
On Gwia, IMAP SSL was set to required and SMTP SSL was set to enabled. In gwia.cfg the /forceinboundauth was added. So now, any host sending SMTP to gwia must authenticate.
Things went OK for a while but the number of clients connecting via Imap/SMTP has increased and problems started. Gwia would freeze or abend and had to be restarted. I upgraded to gw8.0.3 hp3 which as far as I know is the latest available version. But the abends and problems continue. Here is an example of an abend -
14/06/2013 17:25:21 : SERVER-5.70-2187 [nmID=D0006]
Removed address space because of memory protection violation
Address Space: GWIA
Reason: Page Fault, Attempt to write to non-present page
Running Thread: GWIMAP-SSL-Handler_5
EIP: 0xF53125BD (LIBC.NLM + 0x945BD)
Access Location
I have been watching the gwia address space from monitor and it grows quite large. When gwia first loads the allocated space is 8MB, after a short while it grow rapidly to 50MB. I have seen it at 200MB+.
Any ideas what I can do?
Regards,
PaulBob,
Finally the our GW (8.0.3) is running on linux (oes11.1). That has fixed it, the gwia keeps running with exactly the same IMAP users/clients/load etc. So far it has been running for 3.5 days. I kept the 'IMAP service' going on NetWare by having a cron job that ran twice a hour, it unloaded and then reloaded the gwia. It would take ages to shut down and unload but would get there eventually. In the last few days before the migration I had to change the cron job to kick gwia three times an hour as it would not last the 30 minutes!
Regards,
Paul

Second, GW 8 on NetWare is, in my experience, not nearly as stable / robust as on Linux. We consolidated from 5 NW servers to a single ( same class ) Linux system and both increased performance and greatly improved stability. As a half step, you can easily run just the GWIA on a Linux VM to "outsource" the abends. And on Linux when an agent dies, you can rig it to auto restart so user's have no idea its happening.

Mac pro freezes several times a day
My Mac pro is running slowly and get the pinwheel often. It also freezes at least once a day.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting. -
Mail hangs (freezes) several times each day
I have included the console log in hope that someone can make sense of why this behaviour has begun. I was completely stable in Mail until shortly after about two months of using Mail in Mavericks.
TIA!

Are you running any #3rd party applications as well?
If a proprietary (Apple) application "locks up"... it should not bring down the whole system; rather, one should be able to force quit the application that only appears to be hanging the entire system (press option, command & esc keys for the "Force Quit" application menu).
After a force quit of a proprietary application, it then should open right back up without a reboot. The system should not hang. For example, if Safari does "hang" w/a spinning beachball & you force quit that & then fire it up again -- as opposed to a machine that completely "locks up" as you say... that term is usually reserved for when absolutely everything is frozen which calls for the radical power-button force shutdown. -
My Macbook pro freezes several times a day, help.
My MacBook Pro freezes way too much. It just randomly freezes, whether it be when I'm surfing the web, or I casually move it, it just freezes, and I have no idea what to do. Should I take it to the apple store?
if it happens often while surfing the web its probably flash that is slowing it down open safari then choose safari extensions and install the click to flash plug in it should fix your problem another reason why that could happen is when your computer gets to warm
open the activity monitor programm and check under the processes once in a while if you see the processs kernel root using up a 400 percent of your cpu right before or during the crash then thats the reason, which means your computer is getting to hot
try preventing that by putting it on two books so air can reach the underside of your macbook -
Firefox freezes several times a day
Support page says to just restart Firefox, which I've been doing via Force Quit since there's no other way. But this is happening every 1-2 hours, which is just unacceptable for prolonged work. It doesn't matter what site I'm on or what I'm doing when it happens. First multi-touch scrolling stops working, then I realize I can't click on anything, then I realize I can't change tabs. What causes this and is there a way to fix it? I love FF 4 otherwise so I don't want to go back.
EDIT: I submitted this right after FF had frozen and I restarted. Fifteen minutes later, it did it again.I have used Firefox since it first came out, and always loved it. Firefox 4.0.1 is a different story. This must be one of the worst software upgrades across the board, of any software package I have ever used. I have stuck with it for a few weeks, and I have now finally given up.
Constant crashes, constant freezes, many plugins no longer work, my favorite among them, i.e PDF plugin to see PDF files inside the browser. AppTabs disappear over and over.
I have downgraded back to 3.6.17 and hope things will be better again. -
IMac Retina has started shutting down several times a day, generating a "Panic Report".
Although I have had a new iMac Retina since October, it is only within the past few weeks that I have started trying to use it for most purposes. Initially, it seemed to be working OK. But during the past week, it has started to do peculiar things, such as:
1. Now, several times a day, it shuts down unexpectedly. When I boot it back up, it displays a message saying that it was shut down because of a problem. Then, when I click on the window for a report of the problem, it generates a long “Panic Report”.
2. When it boots back up, it automatically opens several windows that I did not have open when it shut down — Safari, Firefox, Excel, Word, etc.
3. I have 2 external 1gb drives connected for data, and 2 external 4gb drives connected for Time Machine backups. All of the drives have been formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). However, although Finder originally showed all 4 of those drives, Finder now always omits a particular one of the 1gb drives. Yet, iDrive and Time Machine continue to recognize all 4 drives.
4. Several times over the past week, it suddenly popped up a “Jabber" window containing a long transcript of a series of iPhone texts that I exchanged in January. However, I never installed Jabber (to my knowledge), and it doesn’t show as currently installed on any of my devices.
I just ran EtreCheck, and this is the report:
Problem description:
New iMac with Yosemite has started to shut down itself several times a day, generating a Panic Report.

Thunderbolt Bus: iMac, Apple Inc., 26.1 -
My iMac does an automatic restart several times a day. It gives me a option to send in a "panic" report. This happens randomly during the day and night. Any idea of anything new that might be causing this? I am up to date on all applications.
Mac users often ask whether they should install "anti-virus" (AV) software. The usual answer is "no." That answer is right, but it may give the wrong impression that there is no threat from what are loosely called "viruses." There is a threat, and you need to educate yourself about it.
1. This is a comment on what you should—and should not—do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet and gets onto a computer as an unintended consequence of the user's actions.
It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the computer, or who has been able to take control of it remotely. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. AV software is not intended to, and does not, defend against such attacks.
The comment is long because the issue is complex. The key points are in sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user. Internally Apple calls it "XProtect."
The malware recognition database used by XProtect is automatically updated; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
☞ It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
☞ It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't been checked for security by Apple unless it comes from the App Store, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
☞ It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
☞ A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
☞ An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
Apple has taken far too long to revoke the codesigning certificates of some known abusers, thereby diluting the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. Those lapses don't involve App Store products, however.
For the reasons given, App Store products, and—to a lesser extent—other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandbox security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they are not, and never will be, complete protection. Malware is a problem of human behavior, not machine behavior, and no technological fix alone is going to solve it. Trusting software to protect you will only make you more vulnerable.
The best defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and Internet criminals. If you're better informed than they think you are, you'll win. That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know when you're leaving the safe harbor? Below are some warning signs of danger.
Software from an untrustworthy source
☞ Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, doesn't come directly from the developer’s website. Do not trust an alert from any website to update Flash, or your browser, or any other software. A genuine alert that Flash is outdated and blocked is shown on this support page. Follow the instructions on the support page in that case. Otherwise, assume that the alert is fake and someone is trying to scam you into installing malware. If you see such alerts on more than one website, ask for instructions.
☞ Software of any kind is distributed via BitTorrent, or Usenet, or on a website that also distributes pirated music or movies.
☞ Rogue websites such as Softonic, Soft32, and CNET Download distribute free applications that have been packaged in a superfluous "installer."
☞ The software is advertised by means of spam or intrusive web ads. Any ad, on any site, that includes a direct link to a download should be ignored.
Software that is plainly illegal or does something illegal
☞ High-priced commercial software such as Photoshop is "cracked" or "free."
☞ An application helps you to infringe copyright, for instance by circumventing the copy protection on commercial software, or saving streamed media for reuse without permission. All "YouTube downloaders" are in this category, though not all are necessarily malicious.
Conditional or unsolicited offers from strangers
☞ A telephone caller or a web page tells you that you have a “virus” and offers to help you remove it. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
☞ A web site offers free content such as video or music, but to use it you must install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "downloader," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one.
☞ You win a prize in a contest you never entered.
☞ Someone on a message board such as this one is eager to help you, but only if you download an application of his choosing.
☞ A "FREE WI-FI !!!" network advertises itself in a public place such as an airport, but is not provided by the management.
☞ Anything online that you would expect to pay for is "free."
Unexpected events
☞ A file is downloaded automatically when you visit a web page, with no other action on your part. Delete any such file without opening it.
☞ You open what you think is a document and get an alert that it's "an application downloaded from the Internet." Click Cancel and delete the file. Even if you don't get the alert, you should still delete any file that isn't what you expected it to be.
☞ An application does something you don't expect, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
☞ Software is attached to email that you didn't request, even if it comes (or seems to come) from someone you trust.
I don't say that leaving the safe harbor just once will necessarily result in disaster, but making a habit of it will weaken your defenses against malware attack. Any of the above scenarios should, at the very least, make you uncomfortable.
6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it—not JavaScript—in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a padlock icon in the address bar when visiting a secure site.
Stay within the safe harbor, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
7. Never install any commercial AV or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they are all worse than useless. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free security apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial AV products?
☞ To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. This technique is a proven failure, as a major AV software vendor has admitted. Most attacks are "zero-day"—that is, previously unknown. Recognition-based AV does not defend against such attacks, and the enterprise IT industry is coming to the realization that traditional AV software is worthless.
☞ Its design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere. In order to meet that nonexistent threat, commercial AV software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
☞ By modifying the operating system, the software may also create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
☞ Most importantly, a false sense of security is dangerous.
8. An AV product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," has the same drawback as the commercial suites of being always out of date, but it does not inject low-level code into the operating system. That doesn't mean it's entirely harmless. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An AV app is not needed, and cannot be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful, if at all, only for detecting Windows malware, and even for that use it's not really effective, because new Windows malware is emerging much faster than OS X malware.
Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else. A malicious attachment in email is usually easy to recognize by the name alone. An actual example:
London Terror Moovie.avi [124 spaces] Checked By Norton Antivirus.exe
You don't need software to tell you that's a Windows trojan. Software may be able to tell you which trojan it is, but who cares? In practice, there's no reason to use recognition software unless an organizational policy requires it. Windows malware is so widespread that you should assume it's in every email attachment until proven otherwise. Nevertheless, ClamXav or a similar product from the App Store may serve a purpose if it satisfies an ill-informed network administrator who says you must run some kind of AV application. It's free and it won't handicap the system.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have all the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
10. As a Mac user, you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither can you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. Navigating the Internet is like walking the streets of a big city. It can be as safe or as dangerous as you choose to make it. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.
