IMac freezing, white screen

For the last week now, my iMac 24" has been freezing up while doing small tasks - emptying trash, moving things on the desk top, iTunes songs will stutter or pause for a long time during play, opening programs... I try CmdOptEsc to get to a force quit. I cannot get there. The computer will not respond with mouse clicks or keyboard input. The computer gets very warm during all this.
I hold in the power button. It finally shuts down. When I go to start it back up, 3 times now, it has come up to a white screen (pre the apple logo showing up ...) but then does not continue to start up. I have to - again - do a hard shut down and restart. So far, upon the second try during these instances, it does start back up and loads everything.
I am waiting to get my install discs (they were missing when I got the computer back in Feb). I read on here that I should do a repair from the discs. I will try that.
Any other feedback would be greatly helpful. If I need to send this computer in - do I bring it back to the retailer I got from? Or do I need to send it back into Apple?

Hold Shift Key upom booting, this might work and if you get in, copy your Users folders off to a storage drive as soon as possible.
Reboot normally and see if that fixed your problem, look at Disk Utility > Repair
If your good with fixing Mac's you likely can fix this issue yourself, but if not your going to have to take it in for data recovery/service/repair.

The 3 beeps during start-up are telling you that the RAM is bad.
If you can access the RAM modules, you may try taking them out and putting them back in, perhaps it's only bad contacts.
If that doesn't help, you'll need new RAM module(s).

  • 20" Imac has white screen and freezes at start-up

my 20" imac will not start....help...All I get is a white screen and tone at start-up then it stays white. I tried hooking up a bootable firewire drive and pressing the alt/option key at start up nothing. I also tried the command/option/p/r at start up, it will reboot to the same screen. I also tried running the hardware diagnostics at start-up...no response. Computer was purchased on Nov .4 2007, warrenty just expired.
    Help......Please....

I had the exact same problem today. My iMac 20" (iMac 8,1) would't boot any more, staying stuck on a white screen immediately after the normal start-up chime. Nothing worked (no safe mode, no DVD boot, no disk selection icon when starting with alt pressed, no Apple hardware test, no parameter RAM reset, power management chip reset had no effect, no verbose mode, not even open firmware).
I browsed the forums, but what I found didn't help, so I was about to stop trying and have it fixed by Apple. But my son told me he had noticed that after "a long time" (he's 4...), a folder with a flashing ? would appear. I figured that wouldn't happen in case of a severe hardware failure, so I tried one last thing: I hooked up an old PowerBook in target disk mode via Firewire and restarted the iMac. I tried several times (with and without alt pressed), but nothing happened (when pressing alt, a functional mouse pointer would appear, though).
Then I restarted a last time and left the iMac sit there on its white screen for about 20 minutes... and that's when the miracle happened: it finally booted off the target-disk mode PowerBook's system!
I ran Disk Utility, which saw the iMac internal HD as disk2s0 (or something like that), and launched the disk repair process. After about three error-ridden verify-repair cycles, the green ok message finally appeared and the volume mounted as if nothing had happened. I rebooted off the internal disk without a glitch, and I still have to find damaged or lost files.
I guess I was lucky that my HD problem was benign enough to be cured by Disk Utility. But even if that had not been the case, at least I'd have known that the HD failed, and maybe I could have saved some files using recovery software. Whatever the case, if you've got an external bootable drive, it's definitely worth trying before handing your iMac over for (usually horribly expensive) repairs.
    Good luck!

  • IMac G4 White Screen

    Hi.
Just registered but this is the closest thread to what I am experiencing with my iMac.
    I have a 2003 iMac G4 1,25Ghz 17".
It runs fine and I have not had any problems except
this annoying issue - it takes several attempts to get
    it to start-up.
For example, first thing in the morning, I press the
power button and it locks at the white screen with the
grey apple logo with faint grey or white vertical lines.
I repeat restarting the iMac with the power button and
it happens three or so times and usually boots up fine
to the Desktop on the third or fourth attempt. After
    that it runs fine.
As I type this it has been on for six hours with no problems.
I have changed the internal HDD as it was failing with
a new unit, upgraded the RAM, changed the PRAM
Battery, zapped the PRAM and PMU, repaired disk
permissions and even tried a clean install of the OS.
In addition, I had a look at the logic board and all the
capacitors looked fine and all connectors were in. It
has lead me to think it may be the PSU that is on its
way out? System diagnosis is fine, RAM is OK (checked using memtest) and
there are no common symptoms of bad capacitors on
the logic board like freezing, crashing and graphic
    artifacts on screen.
The previous owner said he never had any problems
but admitted the iMac was rarely turned off - it would
go to sleep when it was not being used.
Any help or advice would be great.
    Thanks.
    Iain

    Update:
Have had the iMac powered on for two days and nights and there have been no problems at all. It goes to sleep and wakes from sleep fine. No funny noises or smells!
Just the power up issue. Please help!
    Thanks in advance.

  • IMac froze, white screen on startup

Last night I had a freeze of my iMac. It locked up emptying the trash. Firefox would not quit or force quit. In the end I pressed the power button to close it down. Then it would not boot and just displayed a white screen (no apple). I left it for 30 minutes, disconnected all cables except the keyboard. It then booted OK and Techtools reported all passess, including surface scan.
I might have had an overheated CPU after many hours of video processing. Or too many firewire devices. Or ...
However, There do seem to be a lot of similar problems in today's discussions - 1st June 2009!
The video processing was using an Elgato Turbo 264. That is working OK now but maybe it had problems?
I will gradually reconnect devices and see if the iMac freezes again.

    HI Michael,
Can you post a crash log here?
How to locate a crash log:
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Click "Go" in the menu, then select "Go to Folder".
    3. Copy and paste this path into the Finder dialog:
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/
    4. Click the Go button.
    5. Finder opens the folder containing the crash log. Look for a the crash file with a date field that *looks like the most recent.*

  • 21" iMac getting white screen and does not boot up

    Hi All!
This is my first time to post here but have been using Mac OS since 2009.
I am having issues with my  Mid 2011 iMac 21". I keep  getting a white screen and it does not boot up.
I am a bit technical so I have done all the necessary steps as below:
    1. Powercycle the system (Shutdown, unplug for 10 seconds and replug) = No go
    2. Reset NVRAM several times = No go
    3. Went to Safe Boot = Vertical white stripes on blue screen appears
    4. Tried booting on Recovery Disk = Vertical white stripes on blue screen appears
I'm thinking my video card is faulty now.
Any help guys? I hope my hard drive is not fried
What's worse, my 3 year extended warranty just expired last June and it's only been 3 months

First i can't send it back becuase it didnt have a warranty i purchased it on ebay. second the guy didnt send the install disks with it as he promised i have tried to follow up with him with no luck so hes been reported to ebay. and due to current buisiness expenses cant afford the new software. is there anything else i can do to at least boot the thing so i can figure out whats wrong with it. and has anybody experienced this before and if so how was the issue resolved. soooo frustrated as buisiness is at a stand still till this machine works. p.s.it has osx leopard latest version.

  • IMac 27" white screen of death

    Hello.
I've recently changed HDD in my iMac to OCZ Vertex 2 SSD in a local Apple service. Everything was OK until today. I woke up my iMac from Sleep, it showed the beachball and became frozen and unresponsive. I pressed Power button to switch it off. After that I've pressed Power button again to switch it back on. But... all I could see was a White Screen.
iMac doesn't react on pressing "C", "Shift", "D", "ALT" and other combinations that could help me. I even can't boot using Install Disk. All I can see is a White Screen of Death.
What are the suggestions to my issue?
I'd like to hear any help.

Well, I'm sure that the Apple service who performed the work would have a warranty? I would be contacting them immediately and tell them to fix the problem without cost to you.

  • HELP Please-Loud Alarm Beeps from iMac plus White Screen Only, Too

Hello, Cannot get to the home screen of my iMac - its just a white screen with the grey Apple logo and the spinning circle in a holding pattern.  I've tried turning it off and on several times but the home screen does not kick-in.
Whenever I get a message to install s/w, when the iMac turns itself off and restarts there is a really loud beeping alarm warning.  I turn it off, turn it back on and I get to the home screen - not this time.  Also it seems to happen with the iTunes s/w updates - they don't appear to install.
I'm a total noob with PC's.  Someone mentioned resetting RAM (whats that and how do you do it? (maybe applies to a Macbook and not an iMac  (what's that)
I'm lost - any guidance is appreciated.  Thanks

In Disk Utility, highlight your HD (the top one with the maker's name) and click on 'Repair Disk' on the right hand side. It's greyed out in my pic, but will be live when you boot from the DVD.
Also check that the S.M.A.R.T. status shows 'verified' (arrow). If all is OK, a message will appear in the window after the checks are complete:
If the message says that repairs have been carried out, run the repair again until the green OK message appears with no repairs indicated.
All we've done up to now is check as far as possible that the HD is OK, and that the problem really does appear to be with RAM.
As said above, it's rare for two RAM modules to go duff at the same time, so deeper investigation may be needed to ensure the Logic Board is OK, or that there's no loose connectors at the back of the RAM slots.

  • IMac has white screen after last update!

I am running maverick on my iMac. After this last update installed I am getting the white screen. It was working fine before. I have tried unplugging everything and restarting and that did not work. I have downloaded and reinstalled maverick and that didn't work. I have ran the disk utilities and the disk and permissions are good.   When I am in the disk utility screen there are fuzzy about 1 inch lines running up and down the screen about 2 inches apart. And when I enter the disk utility start up the screen that is gray with the apple logo is all fuzzy. I have a time machine backup but it is a month or so old and I have a couple of files I really need to save if I can.

I Have gotten in using the left shift key forcing safe mode. There are still verticle lines up and down the screen.

  • IMac (2011) white screen for long time before loading

    Hello everyone,
When i powered on my iMac yesterday I got the white screen (before the white screen with the grey Apple logo) for a very long time (app. 4-5 min.) before loading the white screen with the grey Apple logo and eventually starting up my dekstop.
Also the wireless bluetooth mouse and keyboard kept on searching for connection, unsuccesfully - so I pluggend in a cabled keyboard and mouse.
    So far so good.
I chose to make a clean installation of Mavericks OS X (which was also the current OS X), hoping this would put a end to the long loading time when powering up the computer. However this didn't do any good, and I still get the long loading time with the blank white screen, and no succesfull connection between bluetooth mouse+keyboard and the computer.
Does anyone recognize this issue, and how should I deal with it?
The harddrive is a 1TB SATA, and I never had similar issues with the machine.
The clean install of Mavericks was done after erasing the harddrive, through disc utilities.
I feel very confused about this issue, and can't no longer find any alternative solutions to solve it.
Hoping for your advice and kind help

    True :-)
I pressed D upon startup and was able to launch the disc utility.
Tried to Google for people with the same problem, but didnt get any decent answer.
I am thinking some component must be broken, either the HDD or RAM?

  • TS1587 intel iMac went white screen.

No warning or nothing.  had rececently updated Firefox up and clicked weather link and display went white.  Restarted via power button and just white screen no boot up at all

Could be a failed HD. Locate your original OS X install disc that came with the computer and run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode. Run the test 3 times back to back because sometimes it doesn't always pick up errors. If you get errors then it's time to take the machine in for a professional diagnosis and you can decide it it's time to repair or replace it. Assuming you have been backing up this will be just an inconvenience.

  • Freezing White Screen

Hey guys i've been looking all over the place trying to find out what's going on and i found some stuff similar but none of those tips seems to be working. So heres what's up I got a security update from the software update screen and installed it. Upon restarting my computer all i get is a blank white screen, no apple or no loading symbol. I've tried starting it in safe mode and i get the same result. I put the system disk in and checked out my disk utility verified the HD and Verified the HD said there were no problems. Tried reinstalling OSX and nothing. Deleted the partition and tried to start a new and nothing, what's happening after the install though is it'll say get disc 2 ready and then when it reboots right back to the white screen. Any Ideas what's going on here?

oh yea and once in the system disc won't come back out either
