IMac, Fresh Install Of Lion via Recovery HD

Hi,
A few weeks ago my iMac had a serious bug with iMovie. So now I want to prefrom a fresh install of Lion. I have already backed up my data and know how to get to recovery.
But I don't know which drive to erase.
Do I erase The "500.11 GB ST3500418ASQ Media" or the one below it "Macintosh HD"????

Hi,
Macintosh HD is normally it, (the Boot Drive), & quite sure it is for you.
Are you sure you need to erase it though?

  • CAN'T FRESH INSTALL MOUNTAIN LION

    I have a mid 2010 17" MacBook Pro.
Had been using it for years till now.
Recently, I reinstalled mountain lion and boot camp (for web ATM).
The first time it couldn't boot up was 2 weeks ago. No matter how I try, just couldn't boot up after I used **** windows.
I thought it was virus from windows, so I re-do it again.
This time, I can't even fresh install mountain lion, it says there's some problem with the installation program, and ask me to try again.
I even made a flash stick of ML, and says the same thing.
I tried all the disk utility stuff. verify, recovery, clean.
And I used the Apple Hardware Test tool to test it, says nothing wrong with my mac. (I did extention test as well.)
    My Hardware Description:
    Name: MacBook Pro
    Model: MacBookPro6.1
    CPU: intel Core I5
    Core Number:2
    CPU Speed: 2.53 Hz

    BOOT ROM VERSION: MBP61.88z.0057.B0F.1112091028

What happened to my MBP???? Please help~
Thanks in advance if any reply.

  • How To Do Fresh Install of Lion (Not ML)? ML Bricked My Mini

I am at the point that I need to reinstall Lion 10.7.4 onto my Mini that I attempted to install ML on. None of the recovery from Apple cures the ML panics after the several ML install attempts.
I need to do a fresh install of Lion, but need instructions.
    Thanks.

If your Mini came with Lion then you can use Internet recovery:

  • Fresh install of Lion, what happens to iPhone Apps?

    HI all,
I want to do a fresh install of Lion on my Mac. What is going to happen to all of my iPhone and iPod touch apps when I do this? Is there a way to back them up and then add them back to iTunes when I'm done?
I already have all of my photos, movies, music, Mac app .dmg's and documents backed up on a 1TB drive (not time machine, just manual). But what about my iPhone Apps?
I have spent a lot of money on these things and I do not want to have to buy them all again.

  • Fresh install of Lion & migration from internal drive

    Hello,
I recently did a fresh install of Lion 10.7.1 from a bootable DMG of Lion 10.7.1 I downloaded from the app store.  Before I installed Lion I used disk utility from the installer to format my system drive in order to get a fresh install.
The installation went fine and I am now booted into 10.7.1.
I am trying to use Migration Assistant to migrate files over from a Time Machine backup that is on a separate internal hard drive in my Mac Pro.  Unfortunatley MA does not recognize the drive as a source.  The hard drive is visible to me in Finder, yet when I dig deep into the structure some of the folders are not accessible to me since I do not have read/write permission.  I had to enable the permission for the drive initially but that does not cascade to the entire contents of the drive.  I enabled root access in attempt to get around this didn't work.
Is my problem one of permissions or what else?
    Thanks!

    Try Lion Community and TimeMachine
    http://www.apple.com/support/lion
    http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine
Me, and I hope others, clone your system first! keep your drive you have even, as is, you may want or need 10.6.8 still. Format a new drive for Lion instead.
As for what TimeMachine holds and why Setup Assistant on first boot wouldn't import anything.... sorry.

  • IPhoto won't open after fresh instal of Lion!

I recently erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Lion as I am giving my MacBook Pro to my brother as a Xmas present. I used a USB pen to reinstall Lion. I used my time MAchine backup to bring over iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband. Everything works apart from iPhoto. It says "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Thing is iLife came bundled on my Mac and i did not have to buy it from the App Store. Everything is up to date but it just won;t open. Can anyone help explain why this maybe and help me fix the problem?
    Thanks
    Matt

Try holding down the Command + Option keys then launch iPhoto.
Select:   Repair the iPhoto Library Data base then click Rebuild.

  • Fresh install mountain lion

I am having to many crashes on my Mountain Lion (upgraded from Snow Leopard) and want to reinstall Mountain Lion and see if this doesn't work. My Mac crashed about once or twice a week and most recently this caused my Outlook for Mac to be corrupted. Tied to rebuild DB but it is not working.
How can I fresh install Mountain Lion removing all from my HDD and recovering my data safely?

Found my old Mail, so basically back to normal.
However had two crashes since I've done everything and now I am concerned that my Mac issue might be hardware related:

  • Fresh Install of Lion - anything to be aware of?

I have installed Lion as an upgrade (and copied off the installer to an external HDD). The Emergency disk partition is there - and I assume it works.
Apart from backing up essential data; is there anything I should be aware of if I want to do a fresh install of Lion by erasing the HDD with the system on it and then booting from the Emergency partition?

To answer my own question a bit further. The following two links both show how to install Lion without the need to first have Snow Leopard installed.

  • Clean install of Lion in Recovery Mode - Easy?

I've been looking at different ways of getting a clean install of Lion on a machine that:
    Has Lion already installed
    Can boot into Recovery Mode
Is there a problem with the following, simple procedure:
Boot into Recovery Mode with the usual cmd+R; connect to WiFi.
Open Disk Utilities and erase/reformat the 'main' Partition on the Hard Disk
Once a new, fresh partition has been created, get back into the main Lion Recovery dashboard
Choose the Install Lion option pointed at the fresh partition.
Can someone confirm, please, that this should work, and that I won't be left with an empty partition on which Lion will refuse to re-install....?!
    thanks
    mark
PS If this makes a difference, I'm likely to need to do this on an iMac that was purchased with Snow Leopard, then updated to Lion in the usual App Store way; it's been reinstalled via Lion Recovery but not a clean install; the problems it has still persisted and I think it's time for a clean slate

It isn't, and its potentially problem-causing unless you know you've had one good, trouble-free install from that .dmg.
I went that route the first time I downloaded Lion, had troubles with my first install and continued having troubles with every install afterward made from my USB installer. The light finally went on in my head that it was the original .dmg that I'd downloaded and saved to USB that was corrupt.
Another point is that even if you have no problems with that .dmg, you'll be stuck with that version of Lion everytime and have to do laborious software updates. If you download directly you get whatever version is currently in the App store (10.7.4 right now).
The only advantages I can see of doing it Cattus' way is if you either have a cap on your available downloads per month or a slow connection. Otherwise, not worth it, IMHO.

  • Cannot Do Fresh Install Mountain Lion on My MBP

    Hello everyone!
I just wanted to do fresh install on my MBP.
It had OS X 10.8.3 before. And then I wanted to do fresh install using USB bootable Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
But when I reboot from USB, there's an error like this: "There was a problem installing "Mac OS X"."
What should I do? I'm really confused.
I use MBP late 2011 actually.

Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X

  • Cannot Fresh Install Mountain Lion on SSD

Hi I am new to macs and the first thing I want to do on my mac is install the Mac OSX onto my old SSD from my Windows machine. I have been having great difficulty so far! I created the mac osx dvd following the instructions here. I then took out my old HDD and put in the old SSD, I loaded up from the macosx dvd i created. I then erased the ssd drive as mac extended journal. I then installed the OS. It seemed to work, I loaded up mac osx mountain lion and logged in.
The only thing was that whatever you did on the screen made the spinning thinking wheel appear for far too long. Even opening the finder windows took a while.
I thought the fresh install must have gone funny so I just went through the process gain and tried to install mac osx again. Now I cannot even get the installer to finish! It just stops and says its failed. I have tried wiping the drive again and starting again but now every time the installer fails. Like the first time I tried to install it somehow left some damage or mess behind. Well I hope its not the SSD that is faulty I tested it by plugging it in to another computer with a hard drive docking thing. It seemed to read and write fine!?
I am very confused, could it be a dodgy dvd? I burned it and it seems to work fine, burned it straight from the download so could the download be corrupted?
Its a pain as they are dual layered DVDS and cost a fair amount! Its so frustrating as its my new mac and I just want to get it up and running and do some editing I thought it would all run smoothly, what with it being Mac and all.. :-(
Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Hmm... it seems as if you went through the correct procedures... here's what I'd do, though...
Buy an inexpensive enclosure for your 'old' hard drive (OWC is a good source) and keep the SSD installed in your MBP. Boot from the 'old' drive.
Use Disk Utility to reformat the SSD - format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to the SSD. You'll have the option of creating the Recovery partition - do so.
Beofre rebooting, choose the SSD as your Startup Disk under System Preferences. Then reboot. You should boot into your (speedy) SSD now.
Let me know if this doesn't work.

BTW: I prefer creating a USB flash drive (8GB+) as a bootable installaton drive rather than a DVD. I've made quite a few of them using Lion DiskMaker (similar process that you describe - just automated).

  • Cannot make a fresh install of Lion on my Macbook Pro.

Whenever I try to reinstall Lion through the Recovery HD menu, the installation goes fine up until a moment when it prompts me that if I would really like to cancel the installation procedure, even though I did not cancel it.
I click to not cancel it, but it does it anyway.
How can I work around this?
Also, when doing reinstallation, I deleted completely my Mac HD. The only difference there is between the current installed OS HD is that it is Journaled and Case-Sensitive, whereas the fresh install I wish to do is only Journaled.
    Thanks in advance.

Without Snow Leopard you cannot purchase or download Lion, so you haven't much choice unless you wait until Apple releases their USB flash drive with Lion later this month - $69.00.

  • Fresh Install of Lion

I may replace the hard drive on my late 2008 MacBook Pro. I am on OSX10.5.8. Actually I am hoping that with a complete wipe of the drive I can solve some of the minor problems that are annoying me. Slowness, heating up etc…  Nothing major, but after nearly 4 years of heavy use some gremlins are creeping in. I have performed all the maintenance and diagnostics that should be run but never wiped the drive. I have upgraded the ram and know that my machine meets the minimum requirements for Lion.
Since I have full backups in Time Machine can I just buy the OSX Lion Thumb drive and do a fresh install?
I see that the license agreement does call for Snow Leopard but some on this forum and elsewhere say you can skip it if you do a complete fresh install.  Will doing this cause any problems for me in the future?
    Thanks

but you will always need to use the USB flash drive because you will not have Snow Leopard and cannot download Lion.
    That's an interesting corollary.
Surely you can open a MAS account and register the purchase?  Otherwise, it is obviously better to purchase the 10.6.8 disk and install that first, then purchase Lion, so that you have a MAS history and in the future can re-download if necessary.
What happens to the Recovery HD process in your instance, with only a USB?

  • Fresh install stuck on internet recovery screen

Wiped main drive and secondary drive clean for new user and fresh osx install.  Went back to main screen to start osx install and now it says error temporarily unavailable  So I shut down and now can't get past internet recovery screen and it won't recognize our wifi .  What do I do to get the fresh install completed for the new user?  The computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro.  I have read that maybe there is no recovery partition available since the drives were all cleared and I didn't realize I needed to leave anything on the discs.
i do have another mac that already has mavericks but would the usb method work to get past the internet recovery screen?
also, how do I know if I did the data wipe and reinstall correctly?

Did you boot using command - R (Recovery Volume) or command - option/alt -R (Internet Recovery)?
Did you do the update to allow Internet Recovery?
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support
