IMac: Fried or not?

I've had this problem happen to me a coupla times, but never thought much of it as it went away after a coupla reboots. It happens both in OSX and WinXP. The screen will lock up, and I have to reboot. After that, if I let it boot to OS X, the round dial will go round a bit, then I get the multi-language "You need to restart" box in the middle of the screen.
If i start up holding the alt key (to change the boot up volume), I get as far as it allowing me to move the mouse, and selecting the volume, and if I select WinXP, it will attempt to boot into that. And this is where it gets interesting: I can tell whether the WinXP boot sequence will be a success by the background-image of the WinXP loading screen: If it has a very faint, dark-burgundy-red (almost black) moiré effect, I'll know it won't be succesful, and it will just restart after some HD churning. When XP's "select safe mode" text comes up, the screen text is slightly garbled, with faint, light-grey horizontal lines through each character on the screen.
Also, when I try booting from the OSX Install discs (by holding C just after the boot-up chime), it will churn away on the DVD, before giving me the multi-lingual "Please reboot" window again, just as above.
Another thing: I mainly have WinXP to play Valve's Counterstrike game, with all the details turned up. Friend of mine mentioned maybe that's what's causing the problems.
So, can anyone tell me whether my iMac is fried?

"Also, when I try booting from the OSX Install discs (by holding C just after the boot-up chime), it will churn away on the DVD, before giving me the multi-lingual "Please reboot" window"
No, it's not fried:) Kernel panics can be caused by either hardware or software. Your kernel panics are apparently not caused by software, as your installed OS doesn't control a bootup from the install disc. Your install disc boot result seems to indicate that your kernel panics are hardware related. It would be best if you could confirm that result by repeating your attempted boot from the install disc. The further into the boot process that you can get prior to the kernel panic occurring, the more sound that conclusion would be.
If it is a hardware issue, this most likely means a RAM or hard drive issue. If your RAM is all original from Apple, your problem immediately becomes Apple's problem.
If the RAM is not Apple, or not all Apple, remove the non-Apple RAM and see if the kernel panics continue or stop. At this time there is no need to run any other tests on non-Apple RAM other than removing it from the system. That is the best test of RAM.
If the kernel panics stop and your iMac runs well, remove the Apple RAM and see if your iMac will run as well and without kernel panics when using only the non-Apple RAM.
Between running the Apple Hardware Test (while Apple RAM only is installed), and the "S.M.A.R.T. Status" reported in Disk Utility, that should be all you need to detect a faulty hard drive.
If you wish to further test the RAM, download and run the RAM test utility Memtest to give your RAM a good testing in addition to running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. Best to set both to run multiple cycles.
You can safely walk away from your iMac and leave it running either one. If the RAM is bad, Memtest might not even be able to complete its test - it'll just stop in the middle. It can move slowly, though, so don't mistake its slowness for a dead stop.
You can also check the "Diagnostics" subsection of System Profiler to see the most recent results of your iMac's startup self-test, as well as the last run of the Hardware Test. Best of luck with it:)

  • I had an Intel-iMac fried by lightening. UPS, surge protectors but it happened as I was reaching to unplug.  Cold now.  Could it just be the power supply?  Can I replace that myself?

This is the full question since I couldn't get it all in the box.
I have some complex questions regarding an iMac, a Time-Machine backup, and iTunes on an iPod.
I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica.  Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house.  I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip.  There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.
When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.
First questions:  Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts?  Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply?  Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician?  My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.
Next question:  Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service?  How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.
Those are my iMac questions, now the questions about backup restoration.
If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.  I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook.  My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.  I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that.  Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Quite possible, but working on iMacs is not easy, & PSU might be prohibitive.
Hopefully the Drive might have info on it, but even pulling that out can be a chore.

I'd get an external drive & restore the whole works to it, then boot from the External drive.

Sorry, but that is correct. You need Snow Leopard to sync your phone and the latest version of iTunes and you old G5 cannot run that.

This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.

I downloaded Lion from the App Store on to my iMac and did not save it to a thumb before installing.  Do I have to buy it again to install  it on my Macbook Pro and iPad,  or is there another way to do that?
All my electronics are about a year old.   iPad is Model MB293LL (4.2.1) only wi-fi - no phone.
MacBook Pro is  OSX 10.6.8 Build 10K549.  Also have an AT&T iPhone that I basically use as a Palm, since I changed carriers.
    Thank you for your help.
ps: I got an error message and it looks like this did not get posted the first time.  2nd try.

Open the Mac App Store on your MacBook Pro
Hold the Option key and click on “Purchases”
Hold the Option key and click on “OS X Lion” from the purchased app list
“Installed’ should now say “Install” which allows you to download OS X Lion.
This assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both computers.
Lion does not get installed on an iPad. It runs iOS.

  • My bluetooth keyboard (Macnus 3.0) is recognised by my iMac but will  not pair?  I have paired it with my iPad using code 8310 but it still will not pair with my iMac.  Can someone help please?

My bluetooth keyboard (Macnus brand - bought recently in Thailand)(similar to Mac small keyboard) will pair with my iPad using code 8310,and is recognized by my iMac but will not pair?
There are very scant instructions with the keyboard and no mention of any code (the code was prompted by my iPad).
I have followed the instructions but it still will not pair with my iMac!
    Can anyone help please?
My iMac is 20 inch  Mid 2007 OSX10.9.1 4GB RAM

Hi All, thank you for you suggestions.  I have been unable to find any website for the maker, but have looked at several Thai/cambodian sites incl <http://www.buycoms.com/Article/8435/index.asp>  which mentions the keyboard being suitable for tablet or windows.  No mention of iMac!  although the box is branded to indicate Mac compatable.
I'm thinking that maybe it just will not pair with an iMac.
Ill keep looking for the maker website, which might come on later in the future? maybe?
    thanks again.

  • IMac external display not recognised although previously it was recognised.

I have been using a secondary display for several months without problems. Now the iMac refuses to recognize it's existence. The secondary display gives message 'No Input Signal' Any ideas as to what has gone wrong?

No other settings that I know of on the monitor. What is puzzling is that it has worked for three months and I have not knowingly changed anything apart from OS updates. The iMac just does not detect the second monitor so it is not appearing in Display Settings dialog.

My brother has eight cats, so your not along. Fortunetly his go outside.
I have been talking to the people over at macforums and they had some good thoughts. One guy suggested going analog and soldering in a rocker switch on the cable connecting a hub to the computer, turn off switch turns off keyboard and mouse.
I was prepared to try that but a great idea came along. Arch, you might be interested in this too. Buy a cheap (found one locally for $20) usb kvm switch that takes one usb keyboard and mouse and connects it to two pcs/macs and only connect one of the outs to my system. There is a button to switch between the two, so when I want to disable the keyboard and mouse, I just switch it to pc2, which is not connected to anything.
Cheap and easy solution. I wish I could of figured out how to do this with software, since there would be no money if it was freeware, but I guess you cant win them all.
    Thanks everyone for chiming in!

  • Imac thunderbolt port not recognising hardware

I recently purchased a late 2012 27' imac 3.4GHz, i7.  The things works beautifully, however I'm having a particular issue with the thunderbolt ports.  It's not recognising hardware I plug in - to either port.  I've done a fair bit of research - done the whole restart thing, tried different combinations of connecting and booting up, uninstalling and re-installing the hardware drivers I'm trying to connect, used previous versions of the drivers, tested the hardware on my old macbook pro and it worked, but the new imac is just not recognising it through the thunderbolt ports.  Specifically, the hardware is a Mbox 3 Pro, with Firewire 800 to 400 to thunderbolt cable.  Long chain, but I do know it works.  Any help/ideas on getting the imac and hardware to communicate would be greatly appreciated

I assume you mean System Information?
    The Thunderbolt Bus information reads:
    Firmware Version: 23.4
    Port:
         Status: No device connected
         Link Status: 0x7
         Link Controller Firmware Version: 0.12.3
    Port:
         Status: No device connected
         Link Status: 0x7
         Link Controller Firmware Version: 0.12.3
Since the post, I went out and bought a new thunderbolt adapter, but still no go, it's weird because the Mbox pro is consistently working on my laptop but not on the Imac.
