IMac from 2009. Suddenly making noise like a loud fan.

My IMac from 2009 is suddenly making noise like a very loud fan, or a little like a vacuum cleaner. The sound seems to becoming from the IMac, not my speakers.  Could this be from any of the wires or connections plugged into it?  Restarting the computer did not stop this. I think this happened once before a long time ago. Anything I can do?

Before I saw Mike Sombrio's post:
I restarted the IMac without unplugging the power cord, but the noise was still there when the IMac came back on.  Then I repeated this about 10 minutes later, (restarting the computer without unplugging the power cord). This time the noise was no longer there. I don't know what's going on. I hope this problem does not return. Any explanations? Is this a sign that my IMac is having serious problems? Any advice?

  • My iMac sounds terrible!  There's like a loud fan or motor running?

    Hello,
My iMac sounds like a plane taking off!  I will have to confirm what version of OS I am running but does anyone else have this issue?  Is it the fan or is it a hardware issue?  It has become a little slower over the last couple of months and it's only 8 months old!
    Please help!

Problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Well there are air vents on the bottom or the back or both so you would blow compressed air into those areas or when they are changing the drive have the service center do it as it is easier and better to do it when the system is opened up.

  • IMac from 2009, 4 GB RAM. System shuts down when I use safari or make much moves on the trackpath.

I've got an iMac from 2009, 4 GB RAM. System shuts down when I use safari or make much moves on the trackpath. Use Mavericks, installed Mavericks again on clean system. Problem still exist. What now?

The 2009 iMaccan take 8 GB ram, while it should run ok with 4 it might be a rather inexpensive test to put in 8 and see if that clears up the problems.  Mavericks is going to use almost 2 GB itself so, unless you are opening a lot of applications, you should get by with 4 GB.  But I would go for 8 and see how it does.

  • Imac freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans

My Imac G5 non intel 20" freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans start and it won't boot. just have the logo on the grey screen.
I've tried resetting Pram - think that was the right thing to do?
I've tried disk utility, but it won't settle for me to choose the hard drive, it kind of sticks and keeps rotating the wheel.
    any ideas anyone?
    please help.

Lots of things you can try - first, try resetting the SMU. Next, boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and try to verify and repair your hard drive. If that doesn't work, try running the Apple Hardware Test on one of your install discs.
Also, depending on which model you have, you may be eligible for Apple's power supply or video and power issues.
    Please post back with results,

  • I have an iMac from 2009 updated all my OS programs even purchased Snow Leopard. Tried to import pictures from my iPad mini and found out my iPhoto program is not working.  Can I get a replacement

I have a 24 inch 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 duo, purchased April 2009.  I tried to import my photos from my iPad mini and found out that my iPhoto program was not working correctly.
Is there a way that I can get an updated version of iPhoto.
    Thanks

What does "not working correctly" actually mean?
What version of the OS do you have?
v8.1.2 is the latest version of iPhoto 09. Upgrading beyond that requires a purchase.

  • Sudden CPU Increase leading to loud fan noise

I'm noticing that sporadically firefox or mail (or some other program but these are the common ones) will have a sudden increase in CPU usage. It's jumped into the teens and above. Sometimes 50+.
This of course leads to the fan to kick in and start going and it is of course LOUD. So I kill that process and everything is back to normal.
Any ideas why this is happening though? Did something happen can I prevent this?

    Hello,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I world not worry about this, MacBooks do this, it is just the CPU working harder and that creates more heat. Most of the time it is YouTube or something processor intensive.
    Hope this helps!

Photosmart 6520 makes noise like slipping gears when printing. Printer is just one month old? Have Windows 8.1 OS.

    Hi @Zed0027,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that your HP Photosmart 6520 is making noises like the gears are slipping during printing, and I am happy to help!
For further assistance, I will need to know:
If the printer is located on a flat surface.
If there are any error messages displayed on the printer's display screen. Such as: Paper Jam, Carriage Jam etc.
If the power cable is plugged into a surge protector, or directly to the wall outlet. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
If you can see any broken parts in the printer when you open it.
If the ink carriage is moving freely.
In the meantime, please try a hard reset, please see this post, How to perform a Hard Reset by @Rich1.
Hope to hear from you soon!

  • X200 is suddenly emitting a loud fan noise

My X200 has been working perfectly since October. Now, almost a year later, it suddenly started to emit a loud fan noise (almost as if something fell inside the fan, although nothing did). Has anyone experienced fan failure on the X200? How can I get it fixed? I'm on a long trip in Europe and need to use it on daily basis. It's quite embarrasing to turn the machine on in public places.

heretohelp - if WaleedBakr's system is under warranty then of course it would be covered.   no one is claiming otherwise or denying him of service.
regarding Lenovo knowing "exactly what is wrong with [his] computer", that depends entirely if a call has been made to service.   it sounds like the issue may have cleared itself and that a service case hasn't been opened.
regarding this post going so long without a response from a technician, this thread was started on a saturday (in the US) and our forum doesn't have technicians roaming around.   this is a peer-to-peer forum, not an official support channel.
i recommend familiarizing yourself with our community participation rules where we outline the objectives of this forum and rules of conduct.
if you have personal experience with this same issue happening on multiple X200 systems then i suggest posting about it in this thread so the information can be logged.   that would be very helpful.

  • Fan issue making noise and heating issue

    Hi,
My laptop fan is making noise like a car engine.Earliar i did nott realize it but since winters are here i can hear it clearly coz ciealing fan is not under use now. Also my laptop is quite heated below.I have read that dust can accumulate in vents but i cant see any. Also my previous laptop got killed becoz of this same issue.Hp should do something about it.Can a layman like me open the dv-4 version and clean the fan? It is out of warranty now and i dont want to spend on shop. But i saw a video HP laptops are complicated to open....and close.Watevr other advice u r most welcome to give regarding yhis issue.
    thanks

HP notebooks tend to run hot & thermal control is minimal effort in design & materials.
You can try clening with compressed air or a hoover perhaps but if looks clean & air sems to be flowing I expect it not the main issue.
You may also want to check running processes & CPU use as issues here & viruses can causes CPU load thus heat.
Also review notebook placed so vents are not blocked/restricted.
Use software such as HWinfo to review the actual temps of CPU GPU etc as helps see how much of an issue you really have.
HP laptops can be improved with thermal shims, ceramique paste, housing vent modifications & in extreme cases secondary case venting 25>30mm fan.
Not easy to do without some experience.

  • Just purchased a ex demo iMac from a store and i want to reset and start from scratch how do i do this please

just purchased a ex demo iMac from a store and would like to reset and start again how do i do this

I would take it back to the store and have them do this for you, that should be a condition of the  purchase. However the easiest method is to boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) on startup, use Disk Utility to erase the HD and then install OS X again. This will give you a fresh start.
