IMac Frozen URGENT!

Hi,
My iMac 2008 has frozen today whilst browsing the internet, I was using safari and iMovie was open in the background, I am running OSX Mavericks and the latest version of iMovie.
I recently sent the mac to apple for a new hard drive due to this issue corrupting my Hard Drive, so the hard drive is under 6 months old, could somebody let me know what to do as I have an essay due tomorrow, and can't complete due to this!!

You may have stretched the system resources on an a 2008 Mzc running both Safari and iMovie simultaneously.
Just run Safari and see if the system freezes.

when i went into disk utilities and chose to clean my free space i left it over one hour to do its stuff
i came back and there was no progress bar just the box so i quit the program and when i opened mac mail the system just froze i forced quit mail rebooted and blue screen death
Now when free space is being cleaned is it the same as windows dose the utility write lots of 0 on the hard drive then rebbot its self to free the space
basicly is my hard drive full of 00000 is this why im getting this message because the process was interupted

To do the NVRAM reset (be quick with Step 4, "immediately" is literal!):
1. Power down the machine.
2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should.

IMac frozen after choosing "Restart" from Software Update

Software Update had 2 updates: Latest Safari and latest iTunes. I hit "Install" and it prompted me to restart the computer in order to install the updates. I hit it and then the screen dimmed and I immediatley left to do something else. I assumed it would just do its thing and when I'd be back, it'd be installed and I could log in. Well, I came back about 10 minutes later and found that it was at a blue screen with a swirling indicator graphic (not beach ball, black/grey spiral). It's been like this for 30+ minutes.
The thing is, I'm not sure if it already installed and it restarted and now it's stuck. Or if it was trying to restart but froze here before any installing. So I have no idea what its progress was after I hit "Restart" from Software Update.
I should also mention that I had a problem with Finder and when I relaunched it, it gave error messages rather than opening any Finder window (said something like it couldn't open). Also I had a bunch of other applications that weren't quitting properly so I used Force Quit on them. However, I had Safari open and didn't force quit as I thought the restart/update process would quit for me. I had a huge number of Safari windows open and I remember seeing about 5GB or so of virtual memory being taken up by Safari. I had force quit my other applications becuase they froze but I didn't get a chance to force quit Safari and just proceeded with Software Update Restart since I thought it would just quit Safari as part of the restart process. So I think maybe this frozen screen may be because Safari was taking up so much memory and the quitting is making it freeze. I'm not sure though.
Anyone have any ideas? Should I just try holding the power button and restarting manually and see what happens?

Hi there, I have an iMac (purchased in 2010) and all of a sudden whilst I was listening to music and the sound got distorted and everything crashed,
managed to force quit Chrome, Spotify etc. it said before chrome crashed that shockwave plug-in crashed.
cursor changed to rainbow pinwheel , now back to usual cursor.
tried to reboot usuing keyboard then Finder launched but it has frozen again

Hold down the Power button until the computer shuts down, then restart. Your life may improve a bit if you did not try to run Chrome, Spotify, Shockwave, and Skype plus whatever else you have loaded.
Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:

Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.

About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
    used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
    requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
    drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later

Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

my mbp is just over 2 weeks old! anyhow, it says 469$. It is under warranty obviously!
I would call them. Unplug the imac and leave it unplugged for a couple of mins and try again. sometimes these machines need to take a break i guess. worth a try!

HT4718 iMac frozen on white screen

My iMac got stuck in safari last night, did force quit, took a while for it to sort itself out, log in this morning ok, come back later frozen. Restarted cant get past white screen with logo and white spinning wheel, have tried command + r, holding shift key, holding D. Only have keyboard in USB port. Managed to get to disk utility screen and select restore from TM machine but it was searching for disk to restore to and seemed to be stuck, have also managed to get to screen where you select mac drive but once selected it just goes to the white spinning page. Have a windows keyboard plugged in so any help need to remind me which key to press. Thanks

Hi there, sorry to say but my hard drive was fried we think due to a power cut that happened around the same time so I had to get it replaced, thankfully I had the trusty TM backup so didn't lose anything, hope you manage to fix. I searched and tried out all the tips that I could find beforehand. I took it to an Apple Technician who ran a test on the machine for me. Good luck.

Multicolored Wheel and iMac Frozen

Hi!
I've bought a new iMac on May 2014. I've made a complete migration from my previous iMac with which I've never had any problem.
My new iMac ( 21.5 " with 16Go RAM ) sometimes blocks completely after the Multicolored wheel appears. I never seen that with my old iMac.
I'm obliged to switch it with the button behind. All has been made to try to resolve this problem. I've contacted also The support of Apple 4 times but the problem is always present. It appears aleatory at any time and with any application used.
All was made on it : clean instal, new admin, reset SMC, reset PRAM, authorization repaired etc...
Somebody can help me? (OSX 10.9.4)

Installing FCP (V2/V3 on iMac G5)--Urgent!

Okay, I have some editing to accomplish (putting a reel together) and I'm in the process of upgrading everything... I would like to use FCP on a loaner G5 iMac while I wait for my QUAD to be delivered. I have FC Studio Cross-grade on the way that will solve all of the world's problems--right? Yet, I don't have any current FCP or FC Studio components.
I own FCP V2 and the V3 upgrade... I was using this painfully on my G3 Pismo years ago... I also have a B & W G3...
Any ideas? I see my options as follows:
a) Try to install FCP 3 on the G5--probably will not work--bad idea.
b) Use iMovie... not powerful enough--bad idea.
c) Get a temp. license from Apple for FCP 5??? Is that possible?
d) Install the old $h#t on the old G3...
e) Something you suggest?

a) Won't work. The upgrade to FCP 3 require that FCP 2 be installed, and since you don't have OS 9 running...you can't do this. Even in Classic mode I hear that installing FCP 2 doesn't work.
b) If it isn't powerful enough for you, it isn't. What kind of reel is this anyway? This should be fine for straight cuts and dissolves.
c) Not possible.
d) This is your best bet. In fact, this is your ONLY bet in my book. And FCP 3 works fine on the older machine.

FW Hard disk dont'eject - iMac frozen

Hi
After a few time of use, my external Hard disk (Iomega fire wire, that I use for Tm backup) won't unmount and freezes Finder ("finder not response"). IMac don't shutdown until I disconnect (powering off or detaching the cable) this hard disk.
If it can useful, It occurs when my Usb printer is ON (Epson RX500), when it is OFF don't occur

The fact that the printer is on and not allowing it to turn off means you must if not manually turn it off, turn the switch off.

IMac Frozen randomly for no obvious reason

My iMac has been acting up weird since two accidental power-off 2 weeks ago. The power off was due to a plug fail at my old house and it happened 2 times in 10 minutes. I eventually fixed the plug and made sure that never happened again. But the 2nd power off looked damaging to my iMac since it triggered automatic safe boot, which looked daunting to me.
Now the problems is that my iMac would randomly freeze for no reason when I'm only running an iTunes (paused), IM program and 2 browsers with about 6 gb hard drive space on a iMac 20 inch model with 2.66 ghz CPU.
It doesn't make sense because I only have some web pages and itunes open(itunes not even playing anything), it shouldn't consume so much processing power that it freezes the machine over.
Random freeze means that sometimes it freeze on login, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it doesn't freeze for a day but suddenly it freezes next afternoon.
I have one new app installed for anti-virus, the McAfee, not sure if the firewall is doing anything. Also I have my mac's firewall on as well.
Here are the stuffs I tried so far:
1. Restart, boot from CD, repair disk and repair permissions.
2. Restart, reset PRAM
3. Install the snowleopard again on the same disk so it overwrites everything and i update the system once again to the latest version.
4. The mouse is working during the freeze because I can see it moving, just not other process can properly run.
Please let me know if there is any log file on the mac that I can access to further diagnose if this is a software failure or hardware failure. I certainly hope i don't have to replace harddrive and memory for this.

Your computer is a mess probably from a combination of things. I would start first by following McAfee's instructions for uninstalling their software for several reasons. First it's of no value because there are no, none, zero, zip virus's for OS X currently. Next is most antivirus applications create more problems than they solve and third they slow down a computer by taking valuable system resources.
Next I would invest in a UPS, this will help in the event you have power problems again. A UPS allows you to do an orderly shut down in the event of a power failure or major power spike.
After you have done both do a SMC reset, Repair Disk Permissions (again) and restart in Safe Mode to clear some caches. If it still is unstable you will need to bring it into your local Apple Store or AASP to be checked out.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Iphoto on imac frozen

iphoto won't open, when force quit asks to repair. I repair and still iphoto won't open. have shut down imac and tried again.

Depress and hold the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your library
If this does not work downloads iPhoto Library Manager and use it's rebuild function

I was transferring information from one iMac to another and decided to cancel the transfer. I am now stuck between the 'unable to transfer some information' screen and the 'registerr information' screen. Any advice?

Not a good sign. If your data is not backed up, power down the machine, and invest in some data recovery software. If your machine is under 4 years old, you can try resetting the PRAM. If it is backed up, you can try repairing the directory*.

ITunes on iMac frozen

My iTunes program is frozen (the little colored wheel is spinning) but not responding. How do I re-set, please?

To Force Quit an Application, hold down Option key+CMD key, then type the esc key, you should get a list of things you can quit.
