IMac G3 333 Freezes at Seemingly Random Times
Hello all,
I have an iMac G3 333 that runs OS 10.4.10 beautifully... except it locks up/freezes and I can't figure out why. I will use it for a while and then suddenly the mouse pointer stops moving and the keyboard doesn't work. If iTunes is playing the music skips then stops. Nothing happens on the screen. At that point the Mac must be unplugged because the power button doesn't work either. I typically get about 20 minutes of use out of it before a crash. Everything else is normal. If it sits left alone and the screen saver turns on it's happy to sit indefinitely. It also is comfortable waking up after falling asleep.
It is a 333 that I upgraded to 256 MB of RAM (filled both slots). Original 6 gig or so hard drive (I know, cramped, but it works). I also changed the motherboard battery. No other software installed.
Weird part is that this problem also happened when running OS 9.2.2 with the original 32 MB of RAM. At the time, I attributed it to OS 9 extensions. I did do all firmware updates before upgrading to OS 10. I did a complete reformat and reinstall.
I have tried:
memtest in single user mode (all RAM checks out ok)
repair permissions
verify disk (several times and in single user mode)
reset PRAM multiple times
holding the motherboard reset button
reinstalling OS 10.4
not using my surge protector (stupid, but i tried it)
taking the fan out, cleaning all the dust from it, and reinstalling (maybe it was/is overheating?)
I cannot figure out what could be going on. I have spent a lot of time inside Macs (I also tinker with an SE/30), but this one baffles me. If you have a suggestion I would really appreciate it.
Dave
A hard drive that's almost filled to capacity can have problems, especially if there's a lot of fragmentation. The drive could also have a hardware problem that's causing the read/write heads to stick, causing a system hang. If you want to continue using this Mac, I'd install a larger hard drive (120 GBs is the max. retail size that's recognized at full capacity). A worst case scenario would be a flaky processor. I had a G3-333 MHz ZIF processor in a beige G3 that would act up and cause system hangs. Once I replaced it, the quirky behavior disappeared. Unfortunately, your iMac's processor is soldered to the processor card. Unless you really want to keep using it, you should decide if it's worth investing any money trying to troubleshoot the problem.

Mail tool seems to freeze my system at seemingly random times for a couple of minutes once or twice an hour. What's going on?
I've run permissions repair, & the disk repair run showed no problems. The disk is split into Mac & BootCamp partitions and there's about 80GB free on the Mac partition. I'm running 2 x 8GB DIMMs that have been carefully matched and extensively memtested and passed. This is an early 2011, 15 inch MBP with the 1.5 GB ATI GPU option.

ITunes shuts down at seemingly random times (read others like this before)
I have a Windows 8 PC, 11.0 up to date version. I was getting a system sound at random times and concurrently the file would stop playing. Here is what I did .. I changed the system sound for "Device Connect" and made it something totally recognizable. Typical email sound and other error sounds come out and there is no problem. I think it is something linked to "Device Connect". Is it hardware or is iTunes battling for connection or what? When it happens I am able to close and restart iTunes .. but this is ridiculous. Anybody got a thought, direction or idea on what this might be?

Firefox crashing at seemingly random times?
I am running Windows Safe Mode and running Firefox with add-ons disabled, but it is still crashing. When add-ons are enabled, it crashes any time I try to view the add-ons tab, but if add-ons are disabled, it crashes at more random times.
Crash signature: nsXPCWrappedJSClass::CallMethod(nsXPCWrappedJS*, unsigned short, XPTMethodDescriptor const*, nsXPTCMiniVariant*)
I am also having the repeating crash problem with Google Chrome, but I don't know if the two problems are related.Ill post some of the most recent reports that have happened, if you need more there are plenty logged on there:

KDE Plasma 5 crashing at seemingly random times
I've been having this problem for a while now and so far I've been unsuccessful in trying to troubleshoot it myself. My computer will be working along fine, and then all of a sudden will freeze. No mouse pointer movement, no keyboard input, trying to switch to a different X session fails (ctrl+alt+F2, etc.), even the numlock key will stop functioning. This forces me to manually reset the computer each time.
Checking the logs (journalctl --since today) shows this alarm at the time of every crash:
Mar 04 11:32:00 mycomp.domain.local kdeinit5[848]: Created alarm 16777226
Obviously the date/time and PID are different, but it's always kdeinit5 and alarm 16777226.
Google has turned up nothing useful for me that I can see and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when the crashes occur; sometimes I'm running VMs through VirtualBox and doing a million things at once and other times I'm not doing much except browsing the web and reading the news.
I'm speculating that it might be an issue with some of the different KDE packages conflicting somehow, but I have no idea which ones it might be or if that's even remotely the case.
If it helps, here is a complete list of packages that I currently have installed (pacman -Q):

Last edited by cypher_zero (2015-03-06 17:53:06)The issue still persists. I have completely wiped and re-installed everything twice now, the second time including the /home partition the second time.
Any help, suggestions or advice would be *really* helpful.
Here's some more info about my system if that helps:

The 'e' key stops working at seeming random times.
Several times now I've come to the computer to wake it up, and can't login to my account apparently because the 'e' key is not recognized when I try to type in the password. It does not seem to be a keyboard issue, because when I plug in a different one, it still has the same issue. When this happens, I have to turn off the compter by holding down the power button on the back. Of course this means I've lost anything that wasn't saved. After the computer boots up, it appears to work fine afterwards. Intervals between this problem have gone from once every couple weeks, to once every couple of days. It appears to be only the 'e' that is affected.
Any ideas? The problem seems to be related to an alternate keyboard layout I sometimes use for writing in Esperanto. It appears that if the computer goes to sleep when this layout is active, the password requester won't recognize either the 'e' or the 'a' keys. This is rather strange, since this layout doesn't redefine either of these keys.
The work-around is that I've changed my password so that it doesn't use either of these keys. One I'm properly logged in, the keyboard works normally.
The particular layout I use is an old one, with the last update on the readme file dated 2004. I haven't been able to find a newer version of this layout, and other Esperanto layouts I've found remap the keyboard differently from this one. It'd be like learning to type all over again. I don't want to do that if I can avoid it.
I appreciate the help and advice. I knew that just turning off the power was a bad idea, but I didn't know what else to do, if I was unable to log in in the first place. -
Satelite P205D-S8802 Freezes at apparently random times [ using Win 7 Premium]
The windows event logs shows :
[1] The driver detected a controller error on \device\Harddisk1\DR1 I got 8 errors in 10 seconds
[2] Fatal hardware has occurred : Unknown error processor Id:1
the 2nd error was more than one hour after the disk errors
Any suggestions would be gratefullty received,
thankyou,
trevHi Jerry,
thankyou foe the reply of course since you requested me to note time etc it hasn't hung
It is however running Win 7 professional not premium as I stated and it is 64 bit. someone noted... hope thats 32 bit....
The only info I can add is that the machine got into trouble earlier all that was running was skype logged in but I wasn't using it cpu went to 99% and all I could do was log off [ took 10 minutes] the critical event at that time was as follows I hope I am not posting too much data,
thankyou for helping,
Trev.

Centro dies for no apparent reason; it also freezes up seemingly randomly.
My Centro has two issues I can't understand: 1) it sometimes just dies for no apparent reason. The battery is usually fully charged or almost fully charged, and it's just dead. 2) Sometimes when I am receiving a call, I try to answer the call and the phone just freezes. It's usually non-responsive for several minutes, then it comes back to life.
I don't have any 3rd party software on it and the phone is less than 6 months old. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Post relates to: Centro (Unlocked GSM)Try hard reseting and not hotsyncing and see if the problem continues. If it does then it's either the device or the network settings. What carrier and how old of a SIM card?

IMac Clock Changing to Random Time
After turning on my iMac, sometimes the clock displays a random time, nowhere close to the current time in my area. I have the clock auto set on which syncs through the internet, but that does not seems to help at all, in fact, i think it syncs a different time zone than i have set. But the catch is that once i go to the clock menu to reset the time, the clock goes back to my time zone. What could be causing this?
Which time server are you using? Apple Asia would seem to be the appropriate one for you.
I would make sure that your time zone & city and time server are setup appropriately for your area and see what happens. Probably wouldn't hurt to restart as well. -
Ipod touch (2gen) keeps freezing at random times..
My ipod touch keeps freezing at very random times. It has been doing it a lot more frequently, mostly while texting from textPlus Silver app. but it will freeze up sometimes during sleep mode and it wont even turn on unless I restart it. sometimes it would freeze while watching youtube videos. butr its all very random. any tips?
Edit: I have tried resetting it, let it charge fully, restoring it, everything. but to no avail

MacBook Pro - Stall, Freezes at Random Times & Durations
Hello all, hope you can help me with a perplexing problem.
Starting this past Monday, my MacBook Pro (specs below) started stalling or freezing at random times. The stalls will sometimes last for 5 seconds and then I can use it again, other times it'll last for 30 seconds to several minutes. On occasion it'll freeze up so hard that I have to do a hard shut down. When it stalls, I can move my mouse and even select other applications which sometimes work. More often then not, it stalls all the programs and I just have to wait.
It does not seem to matter what applications are running or how many. Generally I run a web browser (Firefox, Chrome, or Safari - I've been alternating to see if one is better) with one or two tabs open. I've worked flawlessly for several hours with Browser, Word, and Terminal open, then it freezes up when I try to open something like System Preferences (or Spotlight or whatnot). So there is no real pattern when it comes to applications.
The temperature hovers around 55 - 65. RAM usage rarely tops half and CPU fluctuates but nothing outside of what you'd consider normal (i.e. it never pegs at 100% when stalled or frozen).
I've tried the following:
* Ran Rember (1 pass, then another 25 passes over night) - No Errors
* Ran Verify Permissions - No Errors
* Ran Verify Disk - No Errors
* Reformatted and Reinstalled the OS from scratch (problem continues)
* Repeated the Rember, Verify Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk - No Errors
* Reset PRAM and NVRAM
* Reset the SMC
* Ran Applejack and all the tests associated with it.
In the Console system.log, there was an instance of unknown-dev: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5. After doing some Googling, I ended up disabling Journaling to see if that would make a difference. I was able to run for about 25 minutes before it froze up again.
Any other thoughts or theories that I could try out? Much appreciated.

If you done that, then I believe you have a hard drive issue. Did you zero-out the drive (select "Zero out data" under the "Security Options" button in your Disk Utility) before you reinstalled a new system? If not, you might try that to map out any bad sectors first, before replacing the drive.

Dual G5 freezes at random times...
Computer Specs:
Dual 2.0 GHz G5 (2003)
2.5 GB RAM (2 x 1GB, 2 x 256 MB)
160 GB HD SATA slot A (boot disk)
500 GB HD SATA slot B
OS 10.5.8
My computer has been working fine for the past 6 and half years, and then I decided to move my office. Once I hooked my computer up in the new location, it started behaving very erratically. At random times (2 mins - 4 hours) after it starts up, it freezes and the fans kick into overdrive. I have tried the following with no improvement.
Removed my 2 x 256 MB Ram. (Operated with 2 X 1GB).
Removed my 2 x 1 GB Ram. (Operated with 2 X 256 MB).
Reset PRAM.
let run with no USB (including mouse and keyboard) or firewire devices connected.
booted from CD (freeze occurred while booted from CD)
Restored from Time Machine to new Drive and replaced the boot disk.
Can not run AHT, because the restore disk provided to me 6 years ago is not recognized.
Seems like a Hardware issue... Any ideas?I know this particular problem has already been answered, but I'll offer my recent experience for others that have random freezes.
I have a similar G5: Dual 2.5GHz running 10.5.8. I started getting random freezes where the system was not responsive to the keyboard or mouse. The display did not change--just suddenly lock up at what appeared to be random times in different applications. I had to force shutdown from the power switch.
I tried numerous things. I booted from a good backup--still froze randomly. I reset PRAM, changed the battery, moved RAM around, changed internal disk drives, no dust -- didn't help.
During one attempt to install a fresh OS from the Install Disk, the system froze at the point where I entered my Apple ID and password. Before shutting down again, I disconnected the Ethernet cable and suddenly the keyboard and mouse were responsive again. I booted again with the cable disconnected and connected via wireless. No more freezes. The G5 had been connected to a NetGear gigaswitch along with several other computers and NAS, none of which had problems. I power cycled the switch and connected the G5 to a different switch port and have had no freezeups since. I didn't realize that a bad Ethernet connection would cause the OS to lockup -- would have expected a timeout or other error message.
Hope this helps. -
Seemingly random X server freezes/crashes - "EQ overflowing"
I assume not knowing where a question belongs screams "Newbie Corner", doesn't it?
I am running a relatively fresh Arch setup with Awesome wm, and recently my X-server has started freezing up completely randomly. The only pattern I have been able to see is that I usually have Google+ opened in the active Firefox tab, but considering that I find myself there comparably often and I can see no way in which a specific page on a specific browser could crash the X server (although, when I once had the wm survive through one of the freezes a pop-up informed me that a script on the Google+ page had caused problems, I unfortunately could not take any notes in time though since another freeze occured immediately after and actually crashed this time), it could just be a coincidence.
I have had the problem for a while now, but after a recent upgrade it seems to have become more frequent. Due to this install only being about a month old I've installed quite a lot and I have upgraded twice since the initial "problematic" upgrade, so I don't believe I could find a culprit very easily.
I do have an Xorg log with the error that seems to cause it ("(EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed"), but Google results don't match my problem and I don't know much about the X server so I will not be able to come up with a solution myself. This is my error log.
Interestingly, mpd seems to get stuck in a loop as well when this happens, which to my understanding it should not since the two are not related. Do correct me if they are, of course.
At this point I really don't know what else to do, the only hints I have left is that according to my log I replugged my mouse just before it happened the last time, but I don't believe it's the problem since that did definitely not cause it before, and the fact that I have a faulty driver for my touchpad, which has been a problem since the beginning I've been too lazy to fix so far (so much more exciting stuff to play with!).
So, if you've read this far I'd really like to thank you for taking the time to do so and I hope you can tell me what the hell is making my Arch Linux look like Windows... This better not happen when I'm trying to show off, seriously.pulseaudio and alsa seem to have problems, 5 minutes before the latest crash I have 3 sections looking like this:

Applet freezes (seemingly) randomly upon certain actions
Hello all,
I am developing a signed java applet for my company in which the user can hit multiple HTML buttons, and those buttons trigger javascript which in turn signals the applet to perform some task. I can't post the source code unfortunately, but the main gist is that the following buttons are available: Upload Files, Preview File, Edit File, Copy To USB, Delete, and Exit.
This applet is used only on a closed system (i.e. we can trust our users 100%), so everything is handled through AccessController.doPriveleged calls, so as to give full access to the actions called from the javascript.
To clarify each of the actions:
(We deal mostly with ppt/pps)
Upload Files - opens up a JFileChooser window for the user to select multiple files. Upon hitting OK, the files are sent to a server for permanent storage, and copied to a desktop folder for temporary storage.
Preview File - Converts a ppt to pps (if needed), and launches it using the Desktop.open() call.
Edit File - Converts file from pps to ppt (if needed) and calls Desktop.open().
Copy To USB - opens a JFileChooser for the user to select a USB stick directory, and copies all files from the desktop to it.
Delete - Displays a confirmation window, and upon hitting OK deletes the file from the client and server.
Exit - Confirms with the user, and upon hitting OK, re-uploads any edited files to the server and navigates away from the page.
Most of these actions are handled through threads. So every time a button is hit, a new thread is spawned. The threads go away once the action is performed in full .. i.e. when all files are uploaded, or a file is launched.
Everything works like a charm, except (seemingly) randomly, when hitting the Upload, Copy, or Delete button the applet will freeze. I have many System.err.println statements throughout the entire application and it seems as though the applet freezes very early on in performing action. Namely, the last debug statement I see before the console freezes is usually "Perfoming action ('action name')" or "Dispatching to privileged thread". The first statement happens right after the doPrivileged call, and the second statement happens right before the call.
There are no exceptions or anything displayed in the java console. This only happens on those 3 actions. The only thing I think they have in common is that they each show a JOptionPane/JFileChooser. The other actions don't. While the applet appears frozen, I noticed I could still launch files for previewing and editing, but no debug output is produced where it should be.
Like I said, this appears random, but happens often. I can sit there and hit preview/edit over and over again for 10 mins and it will never freeze up. However, if I sit there hitting Upload/Copy/Delete over and over, it will normally freeze after 1-10 times (usually closer to 1-5).
I know there is limited help you guys can give without seeing the source code, but I was wondering if anything pops out as a possible cause.
Thanks for reading.
BryanThanks for the response.
I converted to JApplet, and am still noticing this behavior.
Also, this freezing happens regardless of if I actually upload a file or not. What I am doing is just clicking Upload, then cancel, Upload, then cancel, and repeating a few times until it locks up. Same with the Copy button. I don't actually hit OK to copy, just keep hitting cancel. So each time I hit the button the following should be happening:
Button is hit
Javascript function is called
Javascript calls java function dispatchAction.
java function dispatchAction performs a doPrivileged, which inside the PrivilegedAction calls performAction
performAction creates a Worker class, which is a custom class I made that implements Runnable. The reason for this is I had to be able to pass an external variable into the thread, and wasn't able to with a normal Runnable.
the Worker class is run as a new thread, and inside it calls a function that creates the JFileChooser
That's about it. I have been over the code a few times and find this very peculiar, because VERY little happens when the Upload/Copy/Delete buttons are clicked, then cancelled. The only thing I can see is an issue with calling too many doPrivilege or something, or too many threads .. no idea.
Any other ideas?
