IMac G3 350Mhz Memory & System Upgrade Killer

I was trying to upgrade (RAM and system) my children's iMac. I went from 9.1 to 10.2 (own all software). 256 chip went in first and only with 9.1. Ran fine. Next step was to put original CD (not tray) in iMac and install system upgrade.
Ran fine during requested restarts. Shut down and came back 4 hours later to run tutorial program (Total Training for Mac OS X). I could hear the 'good' mac startup sound, but the entire screen was dark...as if it were turned off.
After reading messages, I learned about 'firmware'. Should I have installed something? Doesn't the 10.2 know to install this firmware?
Need direction on how to get the children's computer running before wife does a 'Lorraina Bobbit'.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

After turning on the machine, wait a few minutes and then push the button on the front. Once this button has changed color, push it again and see if your display functions normally; if so, open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences and set your Mac OS 9 system as the startup disk. Restart your machine, and then perform the instructions in sentence 1 again. From here, download and install the firmware update immediately, and then use Startup Disk 9.21 to reselect the Mac OS X system as the startup disk.

  • IMac screen darker after system upgrade

Today, I installed 10.4 followed by 10.4.4 on my iMac Edu. After the installation (and right now) my screen is much darker. It looks like the background-lightning is off since then.
Is there any known solution to this? Is this a known issue?
    Mathias Dubois

OK. Silly me! (But silly Apple too a wee bit, I think...!)
I resetted the PRAM and it went bright again. Why does the system Upgrade not reset the PRAM itself if this can be an issue?

  • Have an IMac 7.1, desktop system 10.4.11, 2.8 GHz, 4MB, 4GB.  what can I upgrade to?  What do I need to buy and how high can I go?

Have an IMac 7.1, desktop system 10.4.11, 2.8 GHz, 4MB, 4GB.  what can I upgrade to?  What do I need to buy and how high can I go?

You can replace one of the 2 GB RAM sticks with a 4 GB stick for a total max. RAM of 6 GBs.
    Here are the specs.
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Purchase reliable Mac RAM from online vendors Crucial or OWC (Other World Computing).
The highest OS X version you can go is OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
First, though, you need to purchase a retail disc version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in order to download upgrade to OS X 10.8.
Purchase OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Use Software update, in OS X Preferences Pane to update to the latest version of OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard before upgrading OS to 10.8 Mountain Lion.
OS X 10,6.8 will install the Mac App Store icon in OS X's Application Dock.
From there, you can launch the Mac App Store and download and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Use Sofware Update again to update to the latest version of Mountain Lion.
Be advised, you may want to play around in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard before updating to OS X 10.8 Mt. Lion.
Some users aren't happy with the Hybrid OS X/iOS functionality of OS X 10.8 Mounatin Lion.
If you upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and aren't happy with it, the only way to return to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is wipe the internal drive, reformat it, then reinstall OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
You might want to consider purchasing an external FireWire hard drive, format it so you can install OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard and all of its updates onto the internal drive, use a copying/cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to make a duplicate of your internal drive to the external FireWire drive as a backup that you can reinstall onto your internal drive just in case you find you are not happy with the look and functionality of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
    Good Luck!

  • How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

You can't.  iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your (mobile) device using iOS 5 or later. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .....
    What is backed up
You get unlimited free storage for:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Notes: Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backups of purchased movies and TV shows are U.S. only. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. These movies will indicate that they are not available in iTunes in the Cloud on their product details page in the iTunes Store. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemails
But not from a Mac.  If you want to backup your photos and other important files I suggest you get an external hard drive and use  it with Time Machine.

  • Just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and Intel Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and Quicktime plays m4v files with stuttering audio

I just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and 3.33 Ghz  Intel Core Duo Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.  I now have Quicktime 10.3 which plays m4v files with stuttering audio.  This is a nightmare as I use Quicktime a lot in my research.  I have seen similar threads but so far only reporting the problem.  For now I have installed Quicktime Player 10.7 (which appears in utilities, leaving Quicktime 10.3 in the main applications list) which plays the same videos with no problem, but it would be good to know if anyone has managed to find a workaround at all, or know if Apple have plans to do anything about it?

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.

  • IMac HELP... Upgrade memory on a 800 MHz PowerPC G4

    iMac HELP...
Upgrade memory on a 800 MHz PowerPC G4
I believe I can add more PC133 SDRAM memory to my mac, but have been advised that not all memory works, how do I know what works and what does not?
If you can use this link, here is a really good price...
    http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Name=pc133+sdram
Please advise, the last thing I want to do is buy the wrong memory and install something that doesn't work. THANKS!

    Hello,
    1. There are two slots as shown in the photos below:
The left one being the SODIMM "User" slot and the right image showing the DIMM "Factory" slot.
When Apple published the maximum RAM for the iMac 800MHz it was based on the fact that in both DIMM and SODIMM form 512Mb was the largest capacity on the market hence 2 x 512Mb = 1Gb max. If it is now possible to get a 1Gb PC133 DIMM then theoretically 1.5Gb could be the max but I have heard nothing to confirm that this actually works in an iMac G4.
Crucial always stick to Apple's specs and hence 1024Mb.
    2. I suspect that you have 1 x 256Mb PC133 168pin DIMM (factory) and 1 x 256Mb PC133 144pin SODIMM (later upgrade). You can check this by looking at the contents of J13/J14 memory slots in  Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info... > Hardware/Memory

  • IMac G3 33MHz runs system 9.2.2 but crashes runing system 10

This is a strange one. I own many macs (over 20 last count). Recently we upgraded the office to new iMacs, eMacs and G5 towers. I still have several 1999 - iMac G3 tray 333Mhz and I am in the process of finding other uses for them. I add memory and upgrade them to system 10.3.9. I have done this to 5 older iMacs and they all work well.
I now have one that refuses to run system 10. It had originally come with 8.6 and I upgraded it to 9.2.2. It runs fine with system 9. When I went to install system 10 it crashes near the end of the system 10 install (10.3.5 store bought, made for any machine). It freezes while running 10.3.5 on CD. If I swap the HD (with OS 10.3.5 from a working iMac G3 333Mhz) it will run for a while then freeze (no beachball just stuck). Sometimes it freezes while the system 10.3.5 is loading but not always in the same place. I was able to load 10.3.9 on the HD (after 2 attempts) and got it to install but it wont start before freezing up.
I plan to use it as a time clock so it's 6GB HD and 160MB memory is plenty. I replaced the CD and updated the CD firmware (iMac CD Update 2.0). I have tried to update with "iMac Firmware Update 1.2" but I get a message that "The iMac Firmware Updater does not recognize the firmware and that it is possible that I have a later version". I am not sure what else can be the problem. Is there another way to reinstall firmware? Is there anything else I should check? As it runs 9.2.2 I am assuming it is not a hardware problem and the clock to keep good time.

Did you try using the firmware in this Firmware list?
    Cheers!
    DALE

  • IPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail

*iPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail*
Ok, I upgraded to 4.2 and deleted all previous backups, so I know I'm screwed untill the next update.
I've synced, backed up, restored from backup and still no "Visual Voicemail".
My voicemail only works if I restore the phone to original settings. But if I do that, I loose important data in my apps. As soon as I "Restore From Backup" I loose my "Visual Voicemail".
If I reset my voicemail password with AT&T, I get the screen to set up a new password and greeting in Visual Voicemail. When I go through these steps I get the spinning wheel "Saving".
It never saves, and I get an alert that says it can't connect to voicemail.
I can set up voicemail by dialing "1", but then all I see is a blank screen in my "Visual Voicemail".
I've also tried a full reset of my voicemail with AT&T.
I even got a new SIM card. That didn't work.
Can anybody figure this one out???
    -Thanks

Well, thats the first time I've been told that after a week of phone calls. Maybe it's possible.
I forgot to backup my phone before I upgraded to 4.2. Oops!
When I noticed my Visual Voicemail was gone I tried to backup but ran out of memory.
So I deleted previous backups to make more room. It backed up fine after that.
I don't think it ran out of memory during the update, but maybe it did.
    Crap!

  • What's the best system upgrade for 'older' Mac Mini?

My MacMini is about five years old:
    Model Name:    Mac mini
    Model Identifier:    Macmini4,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed:    2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors:    1
    Total Number Of Cores:    2
    L2 Cache:    3 MB
    Memory:    2 GB
    Bus Speed:    1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version:    MM41.0042.B00
    SMC Version (system):    1.65f2
This mini is still running  System 10.6.8, with the 'latest' version of Safari being version 5.1.10.
Lately, Safari fails to perform certain features correctly on certain websites, and I have to switch to Firefox to make the websites work.
Is it time for a system upgrade, so I can run a newer version of Safari?  If so, which newer OSX system version would be the best for me to upgrade to?

A few other things to consider if you want to upgrade your OS.
If you are using any apps that are still PowerPC apps, they will not run on
any newer Mac OS.  So you will need to find replacements ($$$$).
Also, in terms of apps, you need to make sure the apps you are currently
using are compatible with the newer MacOS.  You may need to upgrade ($$$$)
    or find alternatives.
Also, you will need to make sure any external hardware that you use with
your Mac is also compatible with the newer MacOS.  You may simply need to
update drivers or the hardware may no longer be supported ($$$$).
So, upgrading your MacOS could end up costing more than just adding RAM!!!

For me it occurred after this update..... I dunno why , but openbox wouldn't load, kde would, however
Guess it's due to the mesa update and using the legacy nvida-173xx driver

  • Can 10.5 Upgrade Kill a Powerbook G4?

    Hello,
Powerbook G4 1Ghz, 1GB memory - was running 10.4.10 with no problems. Tried to upgrade to 10.5. I could never get the upgrade to finish (kernel panics, core dumps, etc.). Tried every option, including a complete erase of the hard drive and fresh install. The upgrade would always crash mid-way through. Finally gave up and decided to go back to 10.4.
Now I can't even get the 10.4 install to work. It crashes too (kernel panic). I've erased the disk several times including a complete wipe using disk utility.
I've done the alt-option-P-R reset several times and have also reset the PMU. Nothing works.
Is it possible that the 10.5 upgrade killed my machine or is it just a coincidence? The machine is pretty old.
    Any suggestions welcomed.
btw, is this something that the Genius Bar at an Apple Store could fix for a fee?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Yes. Leopard can damage hardware. See my long-winded post here.
It ***. Out of Applecare, and new logic boards cost as much as your lappy goes for on Craigslist. I hardly think Apple will pony up to fix our hardware - or admit to it.
Before giving up, I'd try an open firmware reset.
    option-apple-O-F
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
That took care of mine. Of course, it didn't live much longer after that. You may have better luck.
I'd run the Apple Hardware Test (hold down option while booting from your original install disks that came with it) a bunch of times, and see what you come up with.

  • I am running 10.7.5 on an imac and I want to upgrade to Yosemite but I have no app store on my computer. Is there a way I can get the app store on my imac?

I am running 10.7.5 on an imac and I want to upgrade to Yosemite but I have no app store on my computer. Is there a way I can get the app store on my imac?

If you don't have it then you will have to reinstall Lion:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
Then you can download and install Yosemite if your computer meets the system requirements:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • GDM errors on VMWare after system upgrade

After a system upgrade today, I'm getting this when GDM starts:
gdm-binary[595]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server for log errors
There aren't any errors in the Xorg log. The vmware driver is explicitly listed as being loaded:
    Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vware_drv.so
    Modul vmware: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
vmware: Using vmwlegacy driver everything is fine.
vmwlegacy: driver for VMWare SVGA: vmware0405, wmare0710
When I run gdm, I get this:
    ** (gdm-binary:970): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome/DisplayManager
** (gdm-binary:970): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
There are several gdm processes running. When I kill them, they're all restarted with the same results.
    I've reinstalled xorg-server, xorg-apps, gdm, and xf86-video-vmware.
From what I've gathered, there's a problem with the video driver.
    Any recommendations on troubleshooting this?

Solved for me using the solution in this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1072193
I wouldn't mark the present thread as solved, however, since the original poster was experiencing issues with VMWare, while my own problems were on VirtualBox.
