IMac g3 cant boot mac os 9.1 install cd!!!!!! help!!!!!!

well first of all i checked this website: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac600graphite.html
and it said it shipped with os 9.1.
but my problem is that it wont boot into the os 9.1 install cd.
Also its a indigo iMac g3 and the cd is a retail install cd (Mac Os 9.1 of course.)
what can i do please help me.

Apple have not made any OS version newer than 7.5.5 public domain, so anything 7.6 or higher someone puts up on a torrent site is techncially illegal softwre.
Second, I wouldn't trust a "free OS." TNSTAAFL, ya' know. I've heard a number of horror stories of illegally downloaded OS software doing bad things. If your lucky, it simply doesn't install. It can get worse.
Considering your location (Cupertino), I would think you can find a Mac User Group easily. They are often a great source for righteous older software at decent prices.

  • IMac won't boot OsX Partition after Bootcamp install/uninstall.

    Hello,
I have bought 2 late 2012 21.5 iMacs last year and have used both the same way. Here is what happened with one of them recently.
Fisrt af all I've installed bootcamp 1 year ago in both iMacs without issues and was ok so far, and was using exclusively Windows 7 partition. The trouble iMac started with some startup issues during boot/reboot (screen was frozen with green/grey horizontal lines), but worked fine after following manual start up.
Lately I've been trying to boot from OsX partition and it freezes in the apple logo every time.
I have already done the SMC / PRAM procedures, without success.
I have tried to download and do a fresh OsX install (Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite). Can't boot from Mavericks / Yosemite flash drive install (both freeze at apple logo - horizontal lines), and only had partial success with one Mountain Lion 10.8.5 flash drive install that booted all right and the first part of the installation process was ok, but after the initial reboot, it happened to freeze the same way before.
The iMac failed to boot in safe mode (stops booting at 25% and then freezes on apple logo), and show no issues with AHT tests.
I can boot in single user mode, but it reboots after a few seconds. I noticed some errors messages during this boot.
It fails to boot in verbose mode, showing a few lines of errors (images attached), and then freezes in a green horizontal line screen.
I can still boot from Bootcamp flash drive and Ubuntu Flash drive, and install both OS. The only issue is with OsX itself. I have used Gparted in Ubuntu to Format the hole partition to HFS+, and can't find any errors in hard drive tests.
I thought about buying a thunderbolt cable and try to do a Clone of my other iMac, but don't know if it will work.
Any other tests/suggestions about this issue?
    Regards,

Fixed the problem with this setup
Of course this means i just lost 4GB.
Let me tell the full story.
In the beginning, long ago, once upon a time. My iMac had 2x2GB ram sticks which were in the two DIMM1 Banks. I then told myself "I WANT MORE RAM BECAUSE LOLZ". So i bought 2x4GB ram sticks. The two empty slots were Bank 0/DIMM0 and Bank 1/DIMM 0. and I added them in there. having done that, I booted OS X up, worked great, had 12GB, everything was shiny and beautiful. Soon after I wanted to try it out on windows. I restarted my computer and BAM the blinking cursor just sits there, being stubborn and all. I then told myself "holy balls, this new ram i got is bonkers" (them words, I blame the language filter). Then after giving it a little thought, i just asked myself if it was because I had ram from two different manufacturers. I removed my old ram, which has nice Samsung stickers on them, and booted it up on windows. Still had the same problem, I then decided that maybe this is all really mentally challenged so to win I had to think like a retard. I took my new ram and inserted it in the same slots where my old ram sticks were (DIMM1 Banks), booted windows up and IT WORKED.
I still hold all of my WHYs on this subject but I will keep messing around to see if I find a better solution than just leaving both DIMM0 banks empty

  • Cant get CS6 Master Collection to Install! HELP!!!!!

Cant get CS6 Master Collection to Install. Migrated to a new Mac Pro 5,1 Single Quad Core 3.2, 32GB of Ram. CS6 Apps worked fine until I tried to launch Illustrator. Illustrator just hangs and finally have to force quit. Tried reinstalling it, and the intalller and uninstaller don't work. I've restarted as suggested...same thing. I've use the Adobe Cleaner...no luck. Downloaded the installer again and tried....no luck.
Bunch of errors starting with "DW051". All end with "has changed." I've called tech support and retried all the above...no luck. (Poorest customer support on the planet)
Attached is an image of the messages including the errors. Please help. I'm loosing my mind.

Thanks Manish-Sharma. I found solution on another post yesterday but I tried all the ways listed above again....no results though. The only progress I did make is that the installer does run and finish! Finally got this new result by placing the current Illustrator Folder from the Applications folder into the trash without deleting it. I launched the Master Collection installer and only selected Illustrator for the install. (All other apps work fine) It did install the new Illustrator application in the Applications folder. Then I launched Illustrator and the same thing happens. The icon starts bouncing in the dock, but that's it. No startup screen...nothing. After a few minutes I check and "Adobe Illustrator is not responding" so I have to force quit.
I was on the phone with Adobe support and established a case # 0183688527 yesterday. They had me do the things you've suggested and more with no results. Sent them an update on other methods I've tried last night. They're supposed to get back to you in 24 hours. 28 hours later.....Haven't heard a word from them.
Any more input is welcome. This really sucks.
    Thanks again for your input

  • Quicktime help needed - I have an Imac 800Mhz PPC G4 with OSX 4.11 installed , Quicktime help needed? - I have an Imac 800Mhz PPC G4 with OSX 4.11 installed?

I have an Imac 800Mhz PPC G4 with OSX 4.11 installed, THANKS! Quicktime help needed?

Thanks for your kind reply Quicktime Kirk!  Thanks in advance to anyone who replies to this as well. I have heard that what I need is an older Quicktime Version that allows for saving files, etc. But apple does not support it & I should look elsewhere - hence my appeal on this forum. Also, for some reason, when I try to upgrade to Quicktime Pro my browser  (both Safari & Firefox) quits as I am about to complete my purchase. In any event, the real question is this: would the Quicktime Pro upgrade be compatible with my current system?

  • Cant boot mac, have tried various things

Hi all, i would appreciate if anyone could give me some help. I try to give as much detail as to what happen so far below.
My Macbook pro 2009 5,3 recently started acting up. Initially i was able to login fine etc, however i was playing a video and it started to pause and freeze. My computer locked up and i had to restart, however once back into mac it would go very slow and applications would hang and i would need to leave them for a min to unfreeze. I noticed this happen shortly after upgrading to osx 10.8.5 from 10.8.2 (not sure if its related). Over time the startup became very slow and sometimes i could not get past the grey spinning cog with the apple logo.  So:
I tried reseting p-ram, and doing a cmd+s single user mode and running the 'fsck -fy' etc which worked, i was able to log back into my mac but it was still very slow and apps locking and freezing and had to hard restart.
I also did a option+cmd+r to go into repair mode on startup, i ran disk utility and did repair permissions and disk repair (In the disk utility it seemes the hdd was fine and s.m.a.r.t was ok), that seemed fine but still it would take ages to login and even load an app and had to hard restart in the end.
Now i cant even login or access single user mode properly(explained below), i cant run recovery on startup spinning cog just locks or keeps going forever, i cant run the install cd while holding down C the spinning grey cog just stops after a long wait. I can run hardware dianostics while holding D with the applications dvd, i have done this and it says the ram is fine (not sure if this tests hdd) but i cant really do anything useful with it.
When i go into single user mode now it says some jiberish and then stops the text from coming down like it use to, then it waits a while, then says:
    hfs_mountroot failed: 6
cannot mount root error = 19
    disk0s2 media is not present
and keeps repeating this down the screen with some other jiberish.
It seems something inside has messed up even more and now disk0s2 cant even mount (probably why i cant access single user mode, recover mode etc..).
I had tried using some software called macdrive (hsf emulator kinda thing) and hsfexplorer on windows with a sata to usb adaptor (also sata to motherboard) but it did not connect properly and did not show up in my computer like it is supposed to. Does any one think that if i had not got to the stage where it cant mount disk0s2 problem it may have worked beforehand?
Do you think i could have backed up the drive with disk utility to a external HDD if i had done it when repair mode was working? (i am kicking myself if i could have)
Another thing i though was to go into single user mode and mount a external HDD and use the copy 'mv' command to copy the data over. When single user mode was working i could run the 'ls' command to browse directries and files where still intact etc, has anyone ever done this backup idea?
If possible if i can just get single user mode working again or repair mode working then i might be able to do some attempts at backing up. How can i get disk0s2 to mount like it should do?
How can i go about getting the data back from this drive? it is extremely important to me, some options i have thought of was to buy a duplicate drive and replace the platters (very hard) and see if that would work (might not even fix mounting issue). Right now i am freezing the drive in the freezer since some people say this works but i dought this will help, will try and boot it tommrow. Would it be possible for me to get a platter reading device that i can take the platters out and then put in a special device to read the data? Does any one know what the special white lab coat people use to do specialist recovery, i would be interested in buying that equitment.
I have read that some people have left the mac overnight with the spinning cog then the login might appear?
I am fairly sure all the files and data i need are still on there regardless of if the hdd is dead/dying/failing, its just the disk0s2 is not mounting properly so i cant access anything to try and recover and some osx system files might be messed up to.
    Please help, much appreciated =)

  • I accidently used Disk Utility to fix a partition. I cant boot in with any USB drive. Help.

I accidentally used Disk Utility to fix a partition.  It erased it.  I desperately need to restore it.
I have an imac without a cdrom.  How do I create a bootable usb with testdisk as for some bizarre reason it seems impossible to create a bootable usb drive for osx.  I tried GParted and the ultimate boot disk that both have test disk.
I am stumped.  Why can't I boot into my imac with a usb?  I have a mac air that I just cant seem to create a usb drive with testdrive thats bootable.  I even tried rEFit but no luck.
Anyone have an idea? How do I fix my system ?

I have an imac OSX 10.8.
I tried creating a usb drive of testdisk on my mac air so that I could use it to boot into the iMAC and restore the partition table.
    I created it using:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o target.img ~/Desktop/ubcd530.iso
    dd if=./target.img.dmg of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m
It did not work.  It would not boot.  I also tried Gnome Partition tool and that did not boot either.  I need my old system as it has important data
    Any tips? Thanks!

  • Imac won't boot with new hard drive installed

So I installed a new 1Tb caviar black in my PPC G5 Imac, but when I turn the computer on, I get no video, no startup chime, nothing. The power light does come on, and fans start running after a minute or so, but thats it. I can't boot from the install disc.
The computer boots up as expected when I remove the drive(startup chime, grey screen, missing folder icon).
Any suggestions to what the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    -D

wierd i have similar problem. I removed HDD after crash to backup in an enclosure before reinstalling os again, put the hdd back and connected the hdd sensor backup (although i thought it was a knock sensor..doh!) . Mac wouldnt start, no screen, no chime, nada, but sleep light stays on. With PCs this usually mean CPU fault so i removed RAM to see if could get a BEEP meaning CPU is ok as it spots ram. No beep. So after checking everything i stripped out ram, hdd, airport and battery and reset PMU, tried again and now i get beep!! so cpu works. slowly adding everything back in and trying power up, last thing to go in was hdd sensor and sure enough when this is connected i reproduce the symptoms. So i disconnected the sensor and tried and i get chimes etc... Ive inspected the cable and made sure is connected right way up and still cant get to work. So it seems sensor is goosed! Debating wether to replace just yet

  • Lion iMac won't boot and can't re-install OS as disk locked.

Hi, my iMac was purchased in 2011 and is running Lion, Mac OS X 10.7.5.
On Monday it stopped booting and gets stuck at the apple logo and spinning thingy.
I have tried to Verify and Repair the Macintosh HD disk but both fail. Next step I wanted to try was to re-install the OS which I understand will keep my settings and data. When I go into this option the disc is greyed out and it says "The disk is locked".
Do I need to unlock the disc, if so then any ideas how I do this ??
What other diagnostics should I try ??
Many thanks in advance for help.

When you try to install and check your hard drive, and you starting the computer from the recovery partition.
Restarting your computer by holding down the command + R, Additional if you have access to DiskWarrior you should give that a try to repair your hard drive.

  • IMac taking long time to boot after new hard drive installed. Help?

I recently had a new hard drive installed on my iMac (running Snow Leopard). After the intall all was well, but I couldn't get my screensaver to work. Erroneously thinking it was missing, I reinstalled it and ended up with two screen saver folders in the system files. Now when I turn on the Mac, I get a white screen for several seconds (close to a minute) before the system shows me the Apple logo and then boots. I'm concerned about this. Did my copying the screen saver cause the problem? Should I reinstall my system software?  I was planning to upgrade to Mountain Lion anyway. Will that fix the problem? Any suggestions appreciated.

Restart in Safe Boot Mode (hold the left Shift key as soon as you restart your computer and hold it until the Apple logo appears). Once it gets to the desktop you can restart normally. Safe Mode  serves a number of purposes and one of them is to delete/trim temporary files that might be causing boot problems. There's no guarantee this will improve your startup time but it will do no harm and I have seen computers restart more quickly after a Safe Boot.

  • IMac shuts down during Mac OS X Bootcamp Installation PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi,
Just opened my new iMac and have installed Windows XP Professional SP 2. I have inserted the Mac OS X installation disc, per the instructions, but Boot Camp won't install in Windows! It looks like it is going to copy files, but then it just shuts down all of a sudden and reboots to Windows. Once it is rebooted, there is a "critical error" message - yikes! I wish I didn't need Windows on my new Mac, but I have to have it for work. Please please please help.
    Thanks

Sounds like the new iMac may not support XP. Someone was curious about XP support on MBP today also.
For my time/effort/money I'd choose Windows 7 Home Premium, probably 64-bit.

  • IMac won't boot from any HDD or install disc

    Hi everybody.
This morning my iMac just didn't wanna boot up, it powers on and the start sound plays but nothing more, all white screen.
Tried holding OPT at start, my mouse cursor becomes visible and active but none of my startup drives show. Also tried booting from both SL and leopard install DVD, it reads the disc for a minute or two then spits it out, nothing on the screen, all white.
Tried resetting PRAM, holding down CMDOPT+PR, it reboots but same thing after that.
My internal HDD crashed recently so I've been booting from my external drive which has SL installed. This has worked fine unitl now, last night I shut the machine down it did take an extra two minutes to power off which was out of the ordinary.
All help appreciated which can avoid me from sending it in for repair.

    Thanks for the reply.
Since my internal drive had been failing I guessed it had to be the culprit and right I was. After I swapped the HDD (plus swiped the interior clean) my iMac was like new again plus I didn't have to send it away.
But what I can't quite understand is why a bad internal drive which was not in use would hinder the mac from booting from the install DVD all of a sudden.

  • Another G5 iMac won't boot past grey Apple screen!! HELP!!!

Last night I tried to put my iMac to sleep. it took about 3 times, and it finally went to sleep. Today I tried to wake it up but I got the little spinning disk, and it would not wake up. I could not restart it from the screen, so I pulled out the power cord as I have had to do a few times in the past with no problems. Today when I plugged it back in it got to the grey Apple screen, but no little progress circle. I waited & waited, nothing happened so I cycled power again. This time I got the progress timer circle, but again after about 20 minutes nothing happened. I then put the install disc in and booted from that. Tried verify disc, but it failed saying it could not un-mount the volume. Tried verifying permissions, but it seemed to get stuck with just a fraction left on the progress bar, so I quit & tried again (basically where I'm at now). I have also noticed that if I choose the "start up disc" (while running from the disc) the only thing that shows in a network icon. My HD does not show up as an option. For about the past 5 months I have noticed my HD has been a bit noisy. Kind of a whirling sound that seems to get louder then quiet down & repeat....not real loud, but loud enough so I have noticed it. I have been worried that something like this might happen.
update: while repairing permissions I just got a "Disc utility error" says Disc utility has lost it's connection with the disc management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disc Utility. This is the same message I got the last time I tried to run it. I also have an OSX Leopard install DVD...should I be starting from that disc, or the install disc that came with it? If I should be using the newer disc, how would I get the other disc out of the machine?
So....am I up the creek with out a paddle, or is there anything I could try?
any advise would be greatly appreciate as ALL my data is on my iMac and not this POS PC I have to use now.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Using Target Disk Mode is an excellent, idea, you should be able to drag your data on to the new machine.

  • IMac G5 wont boot.

Hi guys, in my school there is a classroom with iMacs G5 and my job is to take care of it. So I decide to set firmware passwords on all iMacs. When I set firmware password on first iMac and I reboot it, that iMac cant boot to os x and single user even it cant boot mac os x installation disc. I reset pram and take off ram and nothing happens. What I can do? Version of os x is 10.4 Guys help me.

There are Support articles online at Apple's site which can help resolve the issue of a lost Firmware password; and how to set them correctly, depending on the hardware or machine series, or OS version.
Could be you did not do the process completely or in the correct manner of detail for it to work on that iMac G5. And depending on the OS X version, the means to do so can vary. An example of enacting Firmware protection is in the following page link:
•Setting up firmware password protection in the Mac OS X:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1352
•Enable password protection on your Mac:
    http://www.macinstruct.com/node/507
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
Since the powerPC G5 would be unable to run a system newer than Leopard 10.5(.8) the question of further upgrade is not entered into here; but for certain systems, oversight via Server software is almost always better when you have it. However old Tiger 10.4.x may be, that was a good system, and harder now to maintain since it is old, without updates, and relies on whatever third-party browsers, etc (tenfourfox) for any online access. The old server software would be hard to find, unless original DVDs were donated to the school.
There are other ways to secure computers, since anyone with physical access and time can remove an Admin password or an O.F. password. Articles for these older systems were on Apple Support site on how to secure Panther, Tiger, and Leopard, these were .pdf documents for download; maybe gone now.
I see how the need to protect the computers from such access before someone else, perhaps a student posing as a trusted administrator, for example. And I also see how anyone can ask questions and get answers to do this, before an authentic administrator could get around to doing so. That's why it is important to do the steps correctly; or avoid Open Firmware passwords if you can. Yet it is too easy with physical access to the computers, with a boot disc, etc to remove an Admin password. And a little harder for someone with a little skill, to remove the OF passwords set by an official who has authorization to control the Macs.
For greater protection, use physical controls in conjunction
with firmware password protection and encryption...
How to Password Protect Your Mac
    How to Disable Automatic Login
How to Create User Accounts in Mac OS X
You may have to become an expert in troubleshooting hardware issues in those iMac G5s since that layer of difficulty is made worse by attempting the Open Firmware password in addition to having older machines, etc; and no server software to manage them in a group.
Hopefully you can work around issues as you find them...
    Good luck & happy computing!
