IMac g3 dv not downloading os x 10.3 panther disk
Hi everyone,
My iMac stopped working previously and I was told I had to purchase a new hard drive and install it.
I did so, and started my Mac up again. I went into the installation and it got to the 'select a destionation' part.
It showed the hard drive but with a red exclamation mark next to it, implying I can't install os x on that drive.
I've tried erasing it, restoring it, and veryfying it. Nothing has worked. It still has the exclamation mark.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gavin: There are some model-specific installer discs that will install on some machines other than the ones for which they were designed, and some of those installations will prove to be trouble-free for some of the people who use them. Whether or not you luck out will depend on how much use you make of hardware in your machine that is not supported by the OS components you've installed, which were designed to support other hardware instead.
A retail (universal) installer checks to see what Apple hardware is present, then selects and installs the right OS components to support all of it. A model-specific installer disc contains only the software components to support a particular hardware configuration. There is no guarantee that mismatched hardware and software will function well, or at all, in any particular user's everyday work or in any particular one-time-only project that the user may undertake.
All of this is to say that using a model-specific installer on a different Mac model is a gamble. Even if it appears to work satisfactorily for a long time, there's still a possibility that it will go to pieces on you when you happen to stress it in some particular way that is impossible to anticipate. For an OS installation that you can rely on to behave predictably, and not conceal deficiencies that may be diffficult or impossible to troubleshoot down the line, use a retail installer disc set.

I ask because OPTIARC drives tend to be used in iMacs newer than the pre-2006 models this forum covers. We want to be sure the advice you get is targeted to your model and not one that's over six years old. -
Will not download apps to Imac
i can download music video content but my imac will just not download apps from the store

i have emptied itunes and reset ...tried with my library empty
tried loading from library based on the machine and also off on a hard drive all with new virgin copies of itunes
this is so frustrating as i am begining to use my macbook pro less and lessYou could also partition your drive, or use an external. Clone your current startup to the external or other partition and then install Mavericks on that (or the othe way arround if you want).
You'll have to reboot to get to those programs, though. -
I downloaded Lion from the App Store on to my iMac and did not save it to a thumb before installing. Do I have to buy it again to install it on my Macbook Pro and iPad, or is there another way to do that?
All my electronics are about a year old. iPad is Model MB293LL (4.2.1) only wi-fi - no phone.
MacBook Pro is OSX 10.6.8 Build 10K549. Also have an AT&T iPhone that I basically use as a Palm, since I changed carriers.

Hold the Option key and click on “Purchases”
Hold the Option key and click on “OS X Lion” from the purchased app list
“Installed’ should now say “Install” which allows you to download OS X Lion.
This assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both computers.
Lion does not get installed on an iPad. It runs iOS. -
Just purchased a brand new iMAC and sucessfully performed download and install of Mountain Lion (free upgrade). Discovered that dashboard widgets will not download as webpage times_out in both Safari and Firefox. Already set security to allow downloads from 'anywhere' but with no change. Downloads from anywhere else works fine, just widgets won't work, and I've been trying for several days now. Any suggestions? (firewall is off).

Just bought a new imac and tried to download all my music from my iPod but it only allow me to download purchased items and not the rest of stuff stored on a previous pc itunes folder. How do I get round this ?
The simplest way to transfer everything is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.

I installed windows 7 on my iMac 21.5 (late 2009) and when I boot windows 7, the lag drivers are missing and bootcamp is not installed. The windows package would not download through bootcamp, even when left alone for 2 hours. Don't have the lion disk... Drivers seem impossible to get. Please help!

Software Update is not finding latest release (April 3) of Java 2012 001 Update on my iMac mid-2007, but it downloaded it automatically on my iMac mid-2011 yesterday. Both are running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3. When I try to download the update manually from Apple on my older iMac, it downloads okay, but when I try to open the dmg file, I get a warning message saying that opening this update may make your computer LESS secure. Do you want to proceed? (I did not).
Why would Software Update find this update and install it automatically on one iMac and not the other, if they are both running the same version of Mac OS X Lion? I checked the installed software list on my old iMac and the Java update does not appear there. Why would this update make my old iMac less secure?Recall that Java is not installed as part of Lion.
You have to install it (and are asked if you want to) when you first try to run some java stuff.
Is it possible that the iMac 2007 does not have Java yet?
Try this: open Terminal (from Utilities) and type java -version (exactly like that, with the space before the hyphen).
What do you get?
Consistent with this theory is that the dmg thing gave you the warning - installing java might make your machine less secure because java is a means for bad guys to try to do bad things to your computer.

Hi there. I just bought a new iMac. Used to have a pc. Plugged my nano into iMac and it transferred my purchases fine. Bought a new album on i tunes and it will not download to my nano. Does anyone have any suggestions? Much appreciated. Thanks.
You may not have the iPod's Music tab set up in iTunes, which is how you tell iTunes how to automatically sync your iPod.
Select the iPod in iTunes. There is a row of "tabs" (starting with Summary). Click on Music there.
To use automatic syncing, the checkbox for Sync Music is checked. Below that, you can choose to sync Entire music library, if it fits. Otherwise, you can choose to sync Select playlists, artists, albums, and genres.
With the latter choice, you can create a selection of songs to sync to the iPod by selecting (checkmarking) playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres on the Music tab. For example, you can make a playlist in iTunes with all the songs you want on the iPod. That new album needs to be on that playlist, if you want those songs synced to the iPod. On the Music tab, checkmark that playlist.
When you Apply the change, your selection of songs sync to the iPod (replacing its existing content). Going forward, any changes in the iTunes Music library that are related to your selection of songs on the Music tab sync automatically to the iPod when you connect it, or when you click Sync.
Therefore, if you create a playlist with songs you want on the iPod, and select it on the iPod's Music tab, you can simply update that playlist in iTunes (add and remove songs), and those changes sync to the iPod automatically at the next opportunity. -
Mountain Lion will not download to my iMac, "The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed."
I have this problem also. I was able to download Mountain Lion to my daughter's Mac Mini without any trouble. However, I can't download this to my MacBook Pro. I have read other sites that suggest VirusBarrier is the problem and recommend turning it off in VirusBarrier>Preferences>Advanced. I have tried this and it still doesn't work, although some report that it has worked for them.

Shop purchased photoshop elements 13 will not download to my iMac using the redemption codes.

I purchased this at a store called Harvey Norman here in Western Australia and after going through all the redemption code and serial number panels when I hit the down load button nothing happens.
Although the panel with the download button tells me I have been successfully the system it will not download to my iMac. Any ideas anyone? Incidently all Adobe help panels and contacts do not respond

Backing up your phone isn't really relevant. You can download items you've already purchased (from the iTunes Store on your Mac) to your phone. If you have items you didn't purchase, e.g. ripped CDs, you would have to subscribe to 'iTunes Match' ($24.99 p.a.) to be able to do the same thing with them.
