IMac G3 DVD 400-3 beeps

I have a friends iMac to fix, it has been difficult; I posted at first about a DiscWarrior cd that was stuck in the drive "causing it to not start", requesting help with getting the disc out.
Well I got the CD out by dismantling the computer and removing the CD/DVD drive only to discover that the slot loader has a sort of gate that prevents removal. So I reconnected the power and plugged the DVD drive back in to the internal power cable, started up with the computer open and the DVD drive resting on a front edge but with a paper clip pressed to the Emergency Eject button - this in time worked. The disc ejected.
I put the computer back together, installing two new sticks of 512 Mbs RAM while I was at it (which I now realise might not have been the brightest thing to do) and so started up with an empty DVD slot. Exactly the same sequence of events took place. No screen image, no chimes, just the graunch sort of noise of the initial start-up (normal sound), the power button glows green but nothing further.
If I try Option start with my LaCie FW Pocketdrive (it has a System and System folder) attached, I get 3 beeps after about 30 secs, while still holding down Option (I'm not sure if this should work or not - the OS is 8.6 and I don't know if Option start was an Option back then!!). I have not seen mention of 3 beeps or its significance in all the literature that I have looked at in the last 3-4 days as a direct consequence of getting involved with this iMac. I have read all that I could find and am now stumped because having removed the back panel and connected a spare monitor to the VGA port I get no image on the second monitor either.
So far everyone has talked of OS 9 or OSX but not 8.6 - I don't know what to do next. I do have a Software Install and Restore disc for the G3 that has 8.5.1. on it. Should I try starting from this? I also have the OS9.0.4. Install discs for my old G4 DP 500 that I could try. Given that the DW disc got stuck in the slot (I know now that TTPro and DW can cause this to happen) I am nervous of this getting stuck too.
I know that what I really need to do is run the Firmware Updater 4.1.9. that I downloaded but as I can't start the computer or see anything on a screen, I don't know how to proceed. And as I can't start it I can't tell you much about it other than that when it WOULD start, prior to me running DiscWarrior, I had ascertained that it was a 400 Mhz G3 with 192 Mbs of RAM. It is Dark Blue which could be described as Indigo or Bondi Blue, it has a 9 Gig Maxtor HD which is called Barry's New HD implying that it is a replacement.
I tried a Firewire Target disc mode (with the G3 attached to my G5 - which CAN'T boot into 9) start-up but this did nothing other than cause the 3 beeps as well. Should I try this with my G4, as this will still boot into 9? The one thing I have not done is check the internal PMU(?) battery but I didn't think that this would cause all this strife. I have discovered the 3 beeps are to say no ram installed! I removed the 2 new sticks and find they are 133 and the originals are 100 BUT I do remember seeing that the slot loaders are suppposed to take both speeds!?
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure whether it was beeping because it didn'y want to know about the NEW RAM that I had put in - 2 x 512 mbs of pc-133 (the old ones were pc-100i) or that I hadn't pushed BOTH of them in properly. I have added and removed RAM from so many Macs that I find this difficult to believe.
The RAM supplier, Microseconds, was sure that this slot loader would take both pc-100 and pc-133 sticks (on the sticks it says -Edge PC-133 memory, followed by PC-133-322-620, pc-100 compatible) so I don't know why it didn't want to know about this memory.
Possibly it is because I haven't yet resolved what is clearly a much bigger issue, one that I didn't know about until a few days ago; the iMac Firmware and Installer/Utility disc issue that has resulted in an unbootable iMac, that I now feel I should not have gone near but my friends are waiting for me to "wake it up" and so I must persevere.
I have tried Firewire Target Disc Mode, Ethernet, Option start with a FW drive attached that contains a System folder (admittedly, OS 90.2.2 and the iMac is still 8.6), OS 90 Installer disc and I have also tried plugging another monitor into the "concealed" VGA socket - all to no avail so far.
My next thought was that I only have the option of removing the HD and putting it into another computer and updating this to OS 9.2, then putting it back into the iMac BUT I do not see how this is going to allow me to boot the computer or see anything on the monitor so as to then open the Firmware Updater 4.1.9. I'm stumped. Any more ideas would be great to hear about..

  • IMac - external DVD drive crashes Aimersoft DVD Ripping program

I am using Aimersoft DVD ripping software (legal version) to make mp4 files out of DVDs. It works fine on the IMac internal DVD drive. But when I try and use an external DVD drive using FW800/400 conversion cable, Aimersoft program keeps crashing.
    Any thoughts?

    Peter,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Here are some alternative choices for playing DVDs.
If the LaCie drive USB or FW?
Tiger is serious improvement over 10.1 (although you may need some more RAM) I'm not sure whether it will cure the DVD player issue? If you still have space (9Gb) on your 40Gb drive you could use Mac the Ripper, and then open the VIDEO_TS file in DVD Player.

  • IMac DV SE 400 chimes, gives flashing question mark. Hard drive bad?

My G3 iMac DV SE 400 will not start up. This is what happens:
    1. Startup chime
    2. Hard drive starts to spin
    3. Hard drive "clicks" once
    4. Flashing question mark on screen
I tried resetting the PRAM and disconnecting everything like it says in the manual. I have booted up from CD and used Disk Utility (OS X) and Disk First Aid (OS 9) to find out if the computer "sees" the hard drive. No luck with either one - the drive does not mount. I have also tried System Profiler and the computer does not recognize the presence of any hard drive there either.
Is the hard drive really "dead?" Can it be resurrected - at least to the point where I can retrieve my files, pictures, etc.? I'm confident that the drive is receiving power because it actually starts to spin up (see #2 above). Am I overlooking something easy here? Could it be as simple as replacing the battery? I haven't tried that because the hard drive does "attempt" to start up.
Failing all else, is it possible to retrieve the data using my other Mac even though the hard drive will not boot?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well if it spins up you might be able to salvage your data with Data Rescue II (free demo) or Disk Warrior. You could also try Target mode but if disk utility didn't see it then that's probably not going to be any better.
If those two don't see it then your only option is data retrieval via a pro company but that will be very expensive.

I know the other way around is easy - lots of how to on how to access your PC's drive from a MBA ... But my PC Laptop's drive is broken I need to use my iMac's DVD Drive ... Is this possible? I also have Win XP installed on Bootcamp if saring only works between Windows...
    Thanks in Advance

  • Regular Airport card - fit in iMac DV SE 400?

    Hello there,
I'm trying to install an 802.b AirPort card on my iMac DV SE 400 but it does't seem to fit. The antena cable in the iMac inserts properly in the card but the plastic slot where the card in supposed to go is too wide. Also, there's no male connector in the iMac to connect the card to. The AirPort card fits and works properly in both, my G4 MDD and my 867 PB. I thought this card was supposed to work in my iMac. Am I missing something?
Thanks a lot for any help you may provide.
    Jacobo

Yes that card fits but you also need the adapter. More information can be found in Duane, "iMac CRT: I want to make my iMac wireless...", 01:51pm Jan 31, 2005 CDT.

  • What DVD formats can read iMac recorded DVDs?

    Hello All,
I have a new intel based 20 inch iMac. When I record a video to a DVD with my iMac I'm I safe in assuming that everyone I send it to will be able to view it on their players? Is there a list someone that lists the formats that will read iMac recorded DVDs? Are they universal?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

If you are talking about DVD video format (i.e. using iDVD)...
It's not so much a function of the Mac, or the DVD recorder as much as what media you use. Most recent DVD players should be able to handle just about anything, but some older ones don't handle all formats well. For instance, some may like +R disks, and others may like -R disks. Others may not like RW disks. Some very old players may not properly play any burned media.
If there's one or two particular models you are going to be using to play your disks, visit their company's website and read the specs for that drive. You can usually get user manuals for the older drives. If you can't find any specs, then you will have to experiment with different media, testing them in your target players.

  • Does iMac recovery DVDs include iLife08?

I just got my iMac yesterday. When I checked everything in my box, I found only two DVDs in it. One is for installing Mac OSX system and system apps, such as Mail, iCal, etc. The other dvd only including an Xcode folder. I can't find how to reinstall iLife08 packages that go with every new iMacs. So I just wonder if the iMac recovery DVDs can restore the system with iLife08 suit together? Or I still need to buy another iLife08 package in case I need to reinstall everything?

Thanks Simon. I just got this stupid question as the DVDs I found in the box this time is quit different from the CDs I found when I bought my iBook last time. In that box, there were 4 CDs with clearly OSX system, iLife04, ... labels on it. But this time, no iLife08 appeared on DVDs label. So I confused. Thanks a lot for this information.

  • My iMac's DVD Rom Stuck! I can't insert any Disk.

My iMac's DVD rom is not accepting any disk.
If I try to insert a Disk, it only goes half way. Something is BLOCKING the disk from going in.
The last time I used the DVD rom was last week, it ejected the disk so hard, the DVD Disk actually fell on the floor...after that, It's been stuck until now.
    Is the DVD rom broken?
My iMac is Core 2 Duo 2.4 [2007-2008 model]
    Thanks.

Yes, your DVD drive is busted.
Contact your Local Apple Service Provider and make an appointment to have is serviced.

It will be covered if you have Apple Care, if not call around and get some estimates.

“Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?”

To connect both iMacs, you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter, and a FireWire 400 cable, so you will be able to connect both Macs

  • Do iMacs play DVDs and CDs?

Do iMacs play DVDs and CDs?  I don't see any info about this on the specs page.  Is this an add on?

Yes, they do. For models which don't include an internal optical drive, this requires an external one such as Apple's USB SuperDrive, or for some uses, one in another computer.

  • OSX for iMac Power G3 400

I have a iMac Power G3 400 MHz currently running OS 9.2 with 1G of memory and a 40G hard drive. I would like to upgrade to OS 10.3.9 to mirror my PowerBook G4 laptop. Is this doable? I have been given conflicting advice.

Adobe product's are going to be really slow on OSX (especially the Creative Suite version's! You are not going to work with it really nice, a lot off waiting. Maybe big file's will even not open.
Photoshop CS2 will work, but Adobe Illustrator 10 can not even run on your iMac:
Minimum Adobe Illustrator 10 system requirement's:
    PowerPC® G4 or G5 processor
Mac OS X v.10.2.8 (10.3.8 or higher recommended)
    256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
    960MB of available hard-disk space
Color monitor with 16-bit video card
    1,024x768 monitor resolution
    CD-ROM drive
If you want to have a nice extra system, i would probably buy something like a G4 MacMini. Those are fast enough for your requirement's and quite cheap (used one's ofcours) for the performance you get.
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem.
