IMac G3 goofy after 2006-004 security update

I originally posted this in the Safari forum and was re-directed here. After the latest security update, Safari acts very strange. Some pages open but most don't. I can only get to this discussion page by way of a link in an earlier email. www.foxnews.com works fine as does ebay.com. When I type in other addresses (including Google.com) I get a message that says "Safari can't open the page. The error was: "bad server response" (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011). Report the bug to Apple"...which I did. Several other weird things are happening---When I restart, I get a black rectangle inside the blue background as the system loads. Also my clock re-set to 12/31/69. My trash icon on the dock has disappeared, and 2 different printers refuse to print. The printers actually start and make a noise and even thread the paper through, but no printing is on the paper.
I have repaired permissions, zapped the pram, unplugged and restarted, removed some preferences like com.apple.safari.plist. I don't know what else to try.

Hello again Barb,
Glad to see you took my suggestion & posted here. Here are my thoughts.
Do you have any logs in the Console like this below ?
: for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/iTunesHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/iT unesHelper malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 13 can't byte swap it)
•Do you have itunes in Account/Start up items if yes use the minus[-] to remove it from Start ups.
•Then go to Application folder/iTunes -> ( actions menu) Show package Contents/Resources/iTunes Helper move this to the desktop.
Next Go to HD->Library->Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
•So, just go to the Receipts folder, open it, go to list mode, find the iTune.pkg files, and put into your trash (but don't empty until you've made sure all this works for you) any iTunes.pkg files EXCEPT the ones mentioned above. You do need the iTunes.pkg files mentioned above, but you do not need the ones in your trash.
(NOTE. DO NOT remove any other files except the iTunes.pkg files mentioned.) None of this will affect your music library or music.
Then do a restart & run permissions repair.
The other issue you do not mention is Norton did you uninstall it ?
Which Norton do you use, you did not repy to that.http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2730248&#2730248
Look at macjack's post for the Unistaller.
Backup your files if you have not done so already. If the worse happens at least it will not be a disaster. Any q's please ask.

  • LaCie drive unrecognized after 2007-004 Security Update

Earlier today, I downloaded the Apple Security Update 2007-004, and upon restarting, one of my two LaCie drives became unrecognizable. This is an older 200GB drive, while a newer 250GB LaCie drive still works fine.
I've had a similar problem once before, but was able to go to DiskUtility and repair the permissions, which successfully reset things. This time, DU has the disk listed in the lefthand directory window, but won't let me verify or repair anything.
I have read through lots of other posts about conflicts after the 2007-004, but couldn't find one that involved LaCie drives.
I've tried just about all of the standard fix attempts:
    Unplugging everything for 10 minutes...
    Changed power plugs...
    Changed ports...
DiskUtility and DiskWarrior (the drive is unrecognized to both)...
    Updating the ComboUpdater...
    Deep-cleaned the caches...
    LaCie update...
    Nothing has worked.
Any other ideas? I've read some suggestions to try an Archive and Re-install of the OSX, but liked to put that off if necessary.
There is always the chance the drive is bad, but seeing how this happened right after the 2007-004 update which has caused so many other conflicts, I think the problem is not necessarily the drive, but some unknown conflict.
    Thanks...

this is the right one. sorry.
I had read the link above already, but it's not exactly the same problem....or at least, not exactly the same cause.
The conflicts discussed in that thread came about as a result of the 10.4.9 OS update. My LaCie drives worked fine after that. My conflict was not caused by that, but rather the much more recent 2007-004 Apple Security Update.
In any case, no one in that thread had any definitive solution to offer, anyway.

  • Safari slowdown after the latest security update

I am using Mac OS X 10.4.5 (8H14)on an iMac G5, and after the latets security update i have noticed that Safari has slowed down quite a lot as follows:
I launch Safari, and the "home" page's URL, which I have set to "apple.com," takes forever to show on the screen. There is a delay of several seconds (at least 10-15 seconds), before Safari opens the page. This happens with all bookmarks I have in Safari. However, I launch FireFox, and it works as fast as ever.
I have reset Safari, cleared the cache, deleted the icons, etc., but nothing works. I read about a Safari speed fix at another post, but i don't use Airport, just a wired DSL and router, no TCP/IP.

This is weird, but Safari is working fast again. All I did was to quit Safari and use FireFox to post my problems with safari. After using the bookmarks I have in FireFox (the same ones I have in Safari) to check if the problem was also the same with FireFox, then I quit FireFox and launched Safari, and Safari is now working normal.

  • 2006-007 security update breaks 8192-bit certificates: certtool X509Anchors

Installing the 2006-007 security update has caused Keychain Access and certtool to be unable to use my 8192-bit certificates. This issue hit me severely as it has impacted my entire OS/X Server SSL configuration, including Open Directory and Server Admin.
I have OS/X 10.4.8 clients connected to a 10.4.8 server. All of my server certificates -- including Mail, Open Directory, Apache, and iChat -- are verified by a self-signed X.509 CA certificate with an 8192-bit key.
Now, suddenly, Keychain Access and certtool barf all over the 8192-bit key. In my X509Anchors, the certificate data is now listed as invalid ("Unable to display this certificate"):
    CSSMCLCertGetAllFields: CSPINVALID_ATTR_KEYLENGTH
OpenSSL 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 find it to be a valid certificate, and other applications (Firefox, Thunderbird, etc) have no problems.
Not only do Mail and Safari fail to function, I can no longer access the OS/X Server Admin. I now receive the error, "There is no server available at the address you entered. All services failed to access the address you provided for <server>. Check the address and try to log on again or contact your network administrator."
Some server certs have 4096- or 2048-bit keys. Certificates with 4096-bit keys or less are not a problem, but they all tie back to the 8192-bit CA cert.
Recreating and distributing new certs and chains to all client machines would be an administrative nightmare, and I'm not sure that I can change the Server certs and keys without access to Server Admin, anyway.
This is a huge problem, and I am stuck in the water. If anyone knows of a solution, or can get a response from Apple, please post it here!
    Thanks,
    dkallan

Update: since I never found a fix, I ultimately and reulctantly created new 4096-bit keys for everything, all the way back to a new CA cert. Has anyone had success with 8192-bit keys since the 2006-007 security update?

  • After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file.

After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file. HELP!!!

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • Eclipse IDE won't start anymore after most recent security update

    Hello everybody,
after today's security update the Eclipse IDE won't start anymore on my system, I just receive the following error message:
A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse.
No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: /Applications/eclipse/Eclipse.app/Contents/MacOS/jre/bin/
    java
    'java' in your current PATH
Java is installed and Eclipse ran smoothly until I upgraded. Other Java programs like Visual Paradigm still work without problems.
Does anybody have an idea what I can do about this? I have already tried repairing permissions, to no avail.
    Best regards,
    Björn
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have narrowed down the problem even more:
Obviously system path variables are not set anymore on my system for UNIX processes that are started in background, whereas starting applications from terminal using the open command ('open Gimp.app' for instance) still works without any problems.
Any ideas where to change this behaviour?

  • Trouble connecting to Airport after installing latest security update

Hi, I have just spent an hour with a level 2 SBC DSL tech and they could not resolve my problem. The problem is this: After installing the latest security update released on March 13 for OS 10.3.9, I can no longer securely connect to my airport. It may have something to do with the keychain because this has happened several times before, most recently after the previous security update about 2 weeks ago. Usually after much playing around, I get a window asking for permission for my new network settings to access the keychain. Once I say yes, all works fine. This time, I am not getting that prompt. Even though I have a full signal showing I am connected to the base, it will not pick up and IP address. Finally, the SBC tech had me disable the wireless key on the desktop pc that is the primary computer on the system and immediately my connections works. If I enable the wireless security key, I lose the connection. As I am completely open to hackers with the wireless security disabled, this is a big problem. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can anybody help me?! Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi, my first post here!
I too experienced this problem this evening, after applying the latest security update to Panther. I had verified that the wireless base station was working correctly and that it's WEP key hadn't become corrupted. There were no error messages after re-starting the Mac, just no IP number via airport.
The keychain utility would hang if any attempt was made to alter the password for WEP, and the airport utility hung too. I used Disc Utility to verify permissions, which found dozens of errors - haven't done any maintenance for months - and fixed them.
On re-starting, Airport was 'OFF' so turned it on, was asked to allow access to keychain, and all is working again.
Thank you to those of you who posted the suggestion about permissions, you certainly saved my evening!

  • MacBookPro Freezes after Installing Latest Security Update 2006-003

After downloading and installing the latest security update 2006-003, MacBook Pro freezes when trying to do anything. Seems to do ok in safe mode but did freeze when trying to verify disk with Disk Utility. (did not try to repair as I am out of town at a motel without Tiger disks). Any suggestions before calling apple?
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Since my post, I think I have solved the problem. At least MyMacBook is working ok so far. What I did is started up in safe mode (for the third time) then I went through the "Library" and looked for stuff that looked like it wouldn't work on a MacBook. This included some Norton Utility things. Also went through preferences and Application Support and did the same thing. By the way I had transferred all this stuff from my old Mac using the transfer app and connecting the two with firewire.
Anyway, it's been working for about an hour. I'll keep this post open for a couple of days to see if it keeps working.

  • IMac won't "wake-up" after installing latest security update

I have a fairly new iMac G5 2GHz, and just installed the latest security update yesterday(4/1/06). Since that update, everytime my computer goes to sleep, I can't wake it up.
The power light is on and I hear the computer running... I can even hear the error "bonk" when I try and hit a bunch of keys, but still won't wake up. Was NEVER a problem until yesterday and I haven't installed anything else.

  • Kernel panics after install of Security Update 2006-007

I also installed the security update, had a kernel panic when the install was 60% through the optimization. Tried to reboot and now only get the Apple logo screen which then goes to the following command lines:
init: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: Exec format error
init: can't exec /bin/sh for singer user: Exec format error
init: can't exec /bin/sh for /etc/rc: Exec format error
I booted from the OSX 10.3 disk, ran disk repair which found no problems. Tried repair disk permissions which hung up 1/3 the way through saying "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue."
I tried to reinstall 10.3 but get the message I cannot install on my hard drive since it says it could not find an earlier version of OS X (I had since updated to 10.3.9). I have about 3 months of photos in iPhoto I haven't backed up (my bad)and would rather not reformat and reinstall the entire operating system. Any suggestions? Thanks

    Hi Larry
First off, Dr. Smoke has some good advice regarding kernel panics here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
but It could be that your system is screwed at a fundamental level. If you can't do an archive and install from your system CD, then your HD may need formatting as a last resort. Do you have 2 macs, or a mate with a mac book? If so, you can connect them up using a firewire cable, and start you mac holding down the 'T' key to restart your mac in target disk mode. You'll see the firewire icon on your screen when it starts, and the other mac will get your HD pop up on it's desktop.
This gives you the ability to remove the data files you need (like all your photos) BEFORE formatting your HD.

  • Mac Mini Won't Boot after 2008 008 Security Update

I have 2 mac mini's both identical systems - ran the security update at home - rebooted and noticed the movements of the mouse and the mail application was 1/2 to a second slow/behind - decided to restart - it took 3 restarts and it finally came back and then locked up
I ran Disk Warrior and version 4.0.1 could not fix the problem - version 3.0.3 said it could and replaced the directory - but upon restart it would not boot - I became mesmerized by the spinning dial
I will not run the update at work and had to substitute my titanium at home in the meantime

  • 'Mail' won't get e-mail after the latest Security Update...

    Hey all...
Title says it all. I did the Security Update a few days ago. After the restart, I lost all e-mail from 12/19 on, and have not been able to get new mail since then. The mac in doubt is a G5 iMac 20" running Tiger 10.4.11... No other updates have been done, and all of the other applications seem to work well. I know this is an 'update' issue, as I'm able to get new mail on my iPhone, Powerbook and work Dell.
On a side note, I called Apple on this, and pretty much said the 'update' wasn't an issue.. really, cause it started happening right after the update..
Any insight to fix this would be awesome...
    Thanks,
    Craig

I did remove 'Mail' from the Library/Cache folder and then 'Envelope Index' from the Library/Mail folder.. rebooted after eraser... and nothing new, except for a prompt to re-install 'Mail'.. which I did...
There's a problem there. Unless you deleted the actual Mail application, there would be no reason for any message to reinstall Mail triggered, since it's still there.
At this point, you'll need to do an Archive & Install, with the Preserve Users and Network Settings option. This will remove the current system and replace it with a new one; all programs and data will be left intact. To do this:
    1. Quit all running applications and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
    2. Insert your Mac OS X install/restore disc and boot your Mac from it (hold down the 'C' key until you see the statup screen).
    3. Select your language and proceed with an install as you normally would, but choose Archive & Install, with Preserve Users and Network Settings; run the installer.
    4. After your Mac restarts, eject the disk, then apply the 10.4.11 Combo Update (quit Software Update without updating anything).
    5. Run Software update to bring your system current, and delete the Previous Systems folder.
    6. Repair Permissions again, then restart your Mac and test for this problem.

  • Time Machine Disk borked after 2013-003 security update

I installed the 2013-003 update on the weekend, and conincidentally my Time Machine disk is now locked.  I haven't installed anything else really, so this Security Update is the only change I've made in recent memory, which makes me think that it is the cause, or at least the exacerbating factor.
Background: I have a 27" iMac 3.4GHz / 16 GB (iMac 12,2) with running Mountain Lion 10.8.4.  I have an external RAID array consisting of 2x 3 TB Seagate Barracudas in a Nexstar MX two-bay enclosure, with the enclosure hardware controlling the RAID.  This has worked more or less flawlessly since last fall -- that is until this update.   No raid errors from the enclosure -- as far as it knows the disks are in fine health.
After restarting following the update, I get a message that the OS has locked the Time Machine disk (my aforementioned RAID array) -- so I can read data from it, but I can no longer write -- I can no longer make backups. It mounted the disk, and suggested I use disk first aid to fix it, so I do.
Open Disk First aid, and set it to Verify.  I get some strange errors.  Don't take my word for it, here's the log:

So since this, I can rarely mount the disk.  When I can, I cannot unlock it to back up to -- although if it's awful as it suggests, I don't think I want to.
But, it all seems a little strange to me.  This is RAID, I shouldn't have these problems, no?  I mean, the disks are fine -- although if there was an error on the primary, enough time has passed that's been copied to the secondary by now, so I can't swap them.
Has anyone else had an external disk go T/U after this update?  Is there some fix I'm missing?  I have a new external disk on order (with Thundebolt) so if I have to rebuild my back ups, it won't take as long as this guy over USB, but I don't want to forgo the versions of the files I have no going back some 2 years.
Any insight?  Is my backup borked, making me start over new and lose my back up history?  Is there anyway I can recover this disk, outside of Disk First Aid / sending it to a data recovery place?  Even do you think if I rolled back this update (if that's even a thing) would it set me back on track?
    Thanks!

I had the same issue after a re-build of mountain lion on an older Macbook pro.  I followed you link and instructions and it worked! Thanks wjosten

  • MAC WILL NOT REBOOT AFTER DOWNLOADING LATEST SECURITY UPDATE

I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I patched up what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.  I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball.  I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out.  I tried to use an older System Disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it.  I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail.  Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail, maybe nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hello
It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".
