Imac G3 had clean install OS 10.1; can't install 9.2; now won't boot at all

Hello,
I was given an older imac G3--has 176 mg ram; 6 gb hard drive. Due to its small memory and the fact my daughter just wanted it for games, I decided to only install OS 10.1, instead of OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.1.5 which I have on my G4.
Then, I found that most of my CD games (no internet access) need Classic to run. So, upon inserting my OS 9.1 disk to install that, I got the message that the firmware needed to be updated; then an error saying I needed installer 4.5.5.
Two questions:
1. How do I get around the fact that my firmware needs to be updated but when I boot from a locked disk, I get the error message that firmware updates can't take place due to locked disk.
2. Now, I can't get it to boot at all into OS X or any disk in the CD drive--I get a screen with a little script that says, "failed to boot, etc., Apple Firmware 3.0 3f built 12/__98
then (not exact text)
0 >boot MAC-PARTS: specified partition invalid, etc.
can't open ide1, etc.
I hooked it up to my other G3 imac and my G4 via ethernet cable but since there's no system accessible, I can't turn on file sharing/Apple talk, etc.
Hoping I'm not the only night owl going round and round with these kind of problems. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you don't mind wiping the hard drive, boot from the 10.1 installer disk and install the 9 drivers:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75275
Then find out what CD came with the Mac by first identifying it:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58669
And then looking at this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If it came with 9, get the original CD that came with it to install Mac OS 9.
If it came with Mac OS 8.6 or earlier, get a retail 9 CD which looks like
Do a clean install using
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58176 as a guide once you have the correct 9 disk.
Then install the firmware update that corresponds to your Mac:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
And then I would not even bother with 10.1.5 anymore and get 10.2. Repairing issues with 10.1.5 is difficult. 10.2 installer disks which work on that machine once the firmware is updated look like

  • XP installed successfully, but now won't boot into OSX

I installed XP onto my 06 MB Pro without any problems. Now when I restart it boots into XP; holding down the Option key to invoke the Startup Disk Manager doesn't work.
How do I get into OSX to set the main (OSX) partition as the startup drive?

I ran Boot Camp Assisstant, followed instructions (partitioned HD: 1 for OSX, 1 smaller for Windows), inserted XP install disk, then followed Windows installer.
Windows install disk reformatted smaller partition into NTFS, then installed XP.
The Book now boots straight into XP, and holding Option won't invoke the Startup Disk screen to choose between OSX partition or Windows partition. I triple checked that the right partition was reformatted, so am confident it was the right one!
+If you have an external hard drive, you may want to set it up so you can boot from there; have space to use WinClone to backup Windows at some point, as well as clone/backup OS X.+
I have external drives, but they're all USB so no Target Mode I'm afraid.
+If you inserted and installed Apple Setup while in Windows, you should have Apple Boot CAmp control panel startup disk and other services now.+
I haven't inserted any other disks since the XP installation - do I now need to insert my Leopard install disk? How can I check if I have the Boot Camp control panel on the OSX partition (will it show up in XP anywhere?) ?

  • Hi guys I'm really in need of some help. I have an IMac I3 for a while now I've been having a problem of my machine refusing it shut down , it goes to a blue screen with a spinning wheel but doesn't shut down.  And now won't boot from install DvD

Please some one help me ...
    A) my mac won't shut down with external HD connected (if it's been used)
    B) there are disk permissions that can't be fixed SUID stuff ..
    C) I have now verified the Mac HD and it tells me it's corrupt in bold red writing and to start up from install DVD
    D) it won't boot from DVD so I cannot run the repair , initially the machine was spitting it out on start up , now it appears to be attempting to boot off DVD , well it sounds like it is .... BUT it's hanging with the Mac Logo and a wheel ... For um .... 30min now...
    E) weirdly when OSX is booted off the hard drive , it won't recognise the Install DvD or the applications one... It just spits them out....
I had an old PPC 17" and it was a beaut .... Never had a single problem with it ...
I bought this one December 2010 and it's been nothing but issues for a computer in excess of £1000 I'm extremely disappointed ... And weirdly the shutting down issue started when it was a week out of warrantee ... I feel conned and am almost at the point of throwing it at a wall and buying a PC

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
    Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
    It says ;
    Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
    Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
    Continuing...
    And stops ...
Hope this means something to you ... Thanks again for your help so far :-)

Computer is balky random freezes across apps. Two hard drive cleans later (their scan reveals no hard drive problems) photo shop won't work at all, magic touch mouse inoperable and their diagnoses is corrupted data? Anybody heard of this?

Well, yes, data does get corrupted sometimes.
The trick is finding what data.
By 'cleaned' are you therefor meaning that the drive has been erased and the system re-installed?
Because that's the quickest way to deal with such a situation.
Back up the system first of course,
Add back 3rd party apps one at a time in case one of them is causing the problem.

  • IMac ate DVD, now won't boot...

    Hi,
After using iDVD I had the dreaded "ate the disc" issue, with the typical grinding noise and the lack of ejection. I figured I would play it safe, power down the machine so it wouldn't be reading it, and boot it up again and eject it using the keyboard / mouse button options that are suggested here.
Except it won't boot at all.
I'm stuck on a grey screen, the HD does nothing, and the DVD drive grinds from the instant the power is on.
I have literally no options that I can think of - it just sits and grinds and does nothing, won't boot, won't target disk, won't do anything. None of the hold-buttons-at-start will do anything, because the machine won't get that far. The drive starts grinding before the screen even lights up.
    Help!

Ok, now it appears to have booted, but the disk is still in there. I'm doing a full Time Machine backup (justincase), but after that... what to do?
I really can't be without this machine for two weeks and it was a custom order so a replacement isn't going to happen.
As someone who works for Apple's biggest UK reseller, am I seriously having to reconsider whether I even want to work there any more - no reflection on my employers, obviously, but this is 3 bad machines I've had from Apple in one year and the return rate I've started seeing on hardware is utterly appalling.
The nosedive in quality after using them for over 8 years is simply astonishing.

  • Experiencing complete freezes with my iMac even after clean install

    Hi,
I've got a problem that I thought was something that only Windows was supposed to have and Apple actually used to advertise that Macs didn't have it. Complete freezes of the whole system.
My iMac 21.5" (mid 2011), now with OS X 10.8.2, sometimes and without any apparent reason (There isn't any action on my part that appears to be linked with it) just freezes to the point where I can't even move the Mouse anymore. The keyboard is also unresponsive, and I believe that it can't be an input device error, because anything moving on the screen also freezes (for example MenuMeters).
I'm not confusing this with a kernel panic, because there is no message thereof anywhere (and also, since 10.8, the Mac would restart immediately, which is not the case here).
The only thing I can do in that case is to hold down the power button until the computer turns off.
The problem first appeared already before I installed 10.8, and I also had several kernel panics within a month. Since I couln't find any reason for those either (I checked the error reports, but I couldn't finde anything that appeared in all of them that could link to a common cause), I made a clean install from the recovery partition.
I didn't copy any Libraries, I just backed up the files from my user folder to recover them. Therefore, there shouldn't be anything like old .kext s and such left.
But now, my Mac froze again and I don't know what to do anymore. I did install some new RAM some 2-3 Months ago, but I ran memtest and it all checked out ok so it shouldn't be linked to a Memory problem either...
Since the problem might be very unique here, it might help if anyone knew something to make out the cause of this. Maybe some logging tools or something else to at least find problem, or maybe something to perform a really thorough hardware test.
    Thanks for the help,
    Alex

Put the old RAM back in and test.

  • Applications load slowly on imac after Mavericks clean install

After a clean install of Mavericks, my late 2009 imac runs more slowly compared to how it ran under Snow Leopard.  Applications like "Settings" take a few seconds to load, whereas under snow leopard, the application would load almost instantly.  The Novabench score now is around 771, and matches about what I measured after the clean Mavericks install, but appears low compared to scores for similarly configured systems running Snow Leopard.  The system is quite usable, especially if applications are left open, just slower.  Is it possible to identify from Etrecheck a possible explanation?  Is this level of degradation of performance expected when upgrading an old system?  Thank you for your help.

  • Bought used imac wo software/clean install

We recently bought a used imac...I recently transferred my laptop's info over using migration asst but transferred its problems too. So, I want to do a clean install on the imac and transfer info over slowly.
When we bought the imac, however, it did not have any of the software disks or OS X disk. The owner said that he made disk images of his software and does not have the disks anymore. He said that he can give the disk images to me, but that I will need to burn the disk images first to be able to erase and do the install.
I am clueless as to what all of this means, but I am assuming he'll hand me a CD of disk images and that they will appear on my computer when I insert CD. Do I then use Disk Utility to burn the software to disks? Do I need to burn each one to a separate disk?
Or can I burn the OS X disk, erase computer, and then install OS? Then use the disk images on the CD to install the rest of the software?
Is there a certain type of disk or capacity that I should use?
    Is there an easier way?

In general terms, if you are given a disk image file, it will probably be a .iso file (cross-platform format) or a .dmg file (Mac-specific format).
    All you do is
    Run Disk Utility
(If the disk image file is on an optical disc, you will need to copy it to your hard drive first, since you will need the optical drive for the blank disc.)
Drag the disk image file from a Finder window to the Disk Utility sidebar, below the horizontal line.
Select the disk image file in the Disk Utility sidebar.
Click the Burn button in the toolbar.
    Follow the prompts.
When you buy a used Mac, you should insist that you get the original discs. If they are not part of the deal, look elsewhere. If it's a fairly recent Mac, you may be able to contact Apple and get a replacement set for a nominal fee.

    Jerry:
have tried (3 or more times) to do a "clean install" (OS 10.3.9, on a Power PC G3 iMac), and it keeps failing. Errror message:
What do you mean by a clean install? Did you completely erase and reformat the HDD and then attempted to install? If not, what exactly did you do?
Verify/Repair failed with error -9972 (The underlying task reported failure on exit)
This is a directory error which you will get only when you attempt to Repair or Verify disk in Disk Utility. It is not an installation error. The error you get is telling you that the directory is badly messed up. Error -9972 is a serious directory corruption error which may be hardware or software based. As a result Disk Warrior may or may not be able to repair your HDD. In some cases it is the result of a failing or failed internal HDD. See Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume.
Rather than put out money to purchase Disk Warrior, which may or may not work for you, first be sure that you have your data backed up. Then reformat and erase the HDD as per directions below:
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
    • With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
    • Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.
    • Select language
    • Go to the Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Quit Disk Utility.
If you are able to get this far, you may now launch the Installer and proceed with the installation. If you would like step by step directions, please post back and ask.

  • Clean Install of SL, now would like to resume Time Machine Backups

I recently did a clean install of Snow Leopard in an effort to solve some problems I was having with Aperture. Now that I have the clean install up and running, and have reinstalled most if not all of my apps that I need, I would like to resume using Time Machine to back up my system. My old backups are on Time Machine in the backups.backupdb folder. I dont think I want to delete those, as I'm still finding from day to day there's info back there that I would like to copy over. Is there any way to have Time Machine just resume backups using that same folder?
I'm also not able to move that backups.backupdb folder to a new subfolder (I am being told ownership is not enabled, and even when i click the get info button and the little lock at the bottom of the pane I do not see an option for ignoring ownership) and I am concerned if I start a new Time Machine backup of my current system it will replace the current folder. If anyone has any expertise in this area and can help I would greatly appreciate it.

NEVER move or do ANYTHING with TM backups by hand from finder. TM will not delete your old backups when you start an entirely new backup sequence. set up TM on the new install. on the first backup it should offer you to continue the existing backup sequence. if you choose that option then it will continue the old backups. but it will make a full system backup on the first run and if it runs out of space it will start deleting old backups.

  • Clean install of Mavericks, now cannot access Time Machine backups

I just performed a clean install of Mavericks (10.9.1), but now I cannot access my previous backups under Mountain Lion (10.8.5). The new installation recognizes the TM disk just fine, and I can enter TM, but all of my old backups are blacked out. In Finder, I can easily explore the TM disk and see that all of my old backups are intact there. I've got a few large folders (100+ GB) I'd like to restore, but I can't seem to figure out how to get them back correctly. What am I missing?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer...

Things just got worse. After manually copying over some files via Finder, and then performing a full backup of the new system, even the NEW backup is blacked out; e.g., NO backups, past or present, are accessible from within Time Machine.

  • Clean install OSX and now problems! Please help

    G4 tower 933
We did a clean install of the original OSX 10.1.3 cd to wipe clean the hard drive.
However, now the CD eject button now doesn't work. F12 will eject the CD but the 'eject' button in the upper right of the keyboard no longer works.
How can we get it to operate again?
it is the apple extended keyboard, all worked fine prior to clean install and all original Apple equipment.
We used the "Power Mac G4 Mac OSX Install" CD that came w/ the computer.
There are a bunch of other cds (5 'software restore' cds, OS9 cd) we did not use
Apple hardware test CD was run and all is normal
tried to run the OSX install CD again but only comes up with a blank white screen
    thanks for your help!

10.1.3 is obsolete junk. No one wants to spend their time and energy helping you fix it.
Install 10.2 or later and lots of folks would be willing to help.
