IMac G3 ?  How can I install BSD darwin  PPC 8.0.1  ?

I've got an old used 2nd hand or 3rd hand malfunctioning iMac,
No CD was delivered, only hardware, mouse and keyboard,
I think it is ok, but I never seen it started or running,
it is supposed to be impossible to log in,
because one of the prior users
==> "has forgotten the password".
It is this computer model
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_G3
At least this one looks exactly equal to mine.
Computer Model
imac
serial # YM0*****J74
Eternet ID
00 30 65 84 E0 16
350 MHz / 512 K / L2 64 MB / 6 GB / 24 CD / 56k
well the hard disk inside displays on attempt to install linux for PowerPC approx 40 GB.
I don't know if that has been replaced,
my family Number M5521
supplied handbook,
mac OSX 10.2
I have downloaded darwin BSD PPC 8.0.1
which matches Mac OSX 10.4
On attempt to install I saw some kernel panic.
I did try with OpenBSD and I did see
something like
#: type name length base ( size )
1: Applepartitionmap Apple 63 @ 1
2: Apple_Driver43*Macintosh 54 @ 64
3: Apple_Driver43*Macintosh 74 @ 118
4: AppleDriverATA*Macintosh 54 @ 192
5: AppleDriverATA*Macintosh 74 @ 246
6: Apple_FWDriver Macintosh 200 @ 320
7: AppleDriverIOKit Macintosh 512 @ 520
8: Apple_Patches Patch Partition 512 @ 1032
9: Apple_HFS untitled 2142310 @ 1544 ( 1.0G)
10: Apple_HFS untitled 2 4120589 @ 2143854 ( 2.0G)
11: Unused untitled 3 6330517 @ 6264443 ( 3.0G)
But on attempt to install darwin BSD PPC 8.0.1
It started, then it hang, froze,
and after several attempts I could read
kernel panic.
Can I install darwin or mac osx without the original CDs?
Can I boot from usb memory stick ?
I know how to use the 'c' key to boot from CD-ROM.
I don't know if DVDs are supported,
Can I connect an external USB DVD reader ?
How can i boot darwin from a USB memory stick?
Do i need to create a certain partition scheme
How do I create it ?
fdisk is known,
pdisk is still new to me.
Can I also compile and install the latest version of darwin or mac osx?
I'd like to get one of these installed
and I know how to use a c compiler.

Which one will fit on the hardware given?
Please ?

"has forgotten the password"
From the information supplied, I'd guess that the machine has been loaded with OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). You need the 10.2 installation disc to reset the password.
It is not wise to buy any Mac without all the original installation discs, and any discs required for a later OS which may have been installed.
It won't boot from a USB stick or USB drive. It may be possible to boot from a firewire external drive running OS X 10.2 or later, or in firewire target mode from another OS X Mac. It won't boot from an external DVD drive.
That model originally shipped with OS9 and either OS X 10.0 or 10.1 (neither of which was worth installing).
<350 MHz / 512 K / L2 64 MB / 6 GB / 24 CD / 56k>
Presumably this is the specification printed on the underside of the casing, in which case 6GB is the original HD size. The model did later ship with up to 40GB however, and it's certainly possible that it may have been replaced.
One caveat; some 6GB models could only be booted from a 6GB or smaller partition, so any upgrade would have to be partitioned accordingly.
If you get hold of a retail OS X disc 10.2 or later (but not 10.5), BSD is available from the installer as an optional installation (with the main OS). It's unlikely the previous owner would have installed it however.
Can't help you much further than that I'm afraid, but I'm sure there'll be another bus along in a minute

  • I had previously purchased the programs "Pages" and "Numbers" and they are on my iPhone and iPad I was told that the programs would automatically copy a version of itself for the iMac to be running them but I don't see it installed. How can I install them

I had previously purchased the programs "Pages" and "Numbers" and they are on my iPhone and iPad I was told that the programs would automatically copy a version of itself for the iMac to be running them but I don't see it installed. How can I install for free?  I see that I could go to the apple store and purchase them again but I belibve that since I had already purchased them; I would get a free copy for my Imac.  Do I got something confused here?  Please help.

Whoever told you that was misinformed or lying. Those applications are sold separately for the iOS platform and the Mac platform.
Go to the Mac App Store to purchase Pages and Numbers for your Mac. They're $20 each. If you are running an older version of Mac OS X that can't use the Mac App Store, you can purchase install media from Apple.

  • How Can I install Windows on my iMac??

Hi There! I wanted to ask that how can i install windows 7 64-bit on my imac as i wanted to use some softwares and also, play some games that are not there on osx. Please tell my how to do this. I have a 2007 24-inch iMac with the following specs-
    Intel Core2 Duo CPU@ 2.40GHz
4GB RAM (That i Upgraded Myself)
    Radeon HD2600 Pro Graphics, 256MB
    320GB HDD
    OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion

Your Mid 2007 iMac has got a 64-bit processor that allows you to install a 64-bit Windows 7 version, but Apple doesn't give you support for it in your iMac. Only Late 2009 and newer iMacs are supported by Apple to install a 64-bit version. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
My advice is to install a 32-bit Windows 7 version, although you will probably not be able to use all the RAM. Follow Apple's steps to install Windows > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf
If you still want to install a 64-bit Windows 7 version, do it, but note that it won't work properly as there are no Apple drivers for it

  • How can I install my iMac's Aperture on my MacBrookPro

How can I install my iMac's Aperture on my MacBrookPro

What is your MacOS X version? Is your Aperture version the recent Aperture 3.5.1? Your profile signature "Mac OS 9.1.x? " cannot be right; do you mean Mac OS 10.9.1.x? And is the system the same on both Macs?
If you bought Aperture from the AppStore, launch the AppStore on your MBP:
Sign into the AppStore  with the AppleID you used to buy Aperture on your iMac.
Download Aperture from the "Purchased" tab and let it install.
If you bought Aperture  as a boxed retail version, use the Installer CD/DVD and serial number to install Aperture  on your MBP.
If you bought Aperture online as a trial version, and bought a serial number to unlock the trial, use the trial installer you downloaded.
If you no longer should have the installation media or the downloaded trial installer, you can convert your working Aperture installation to an AppStore licence by upgrading your iMac version to Aperture 3.5.1.  Then you can install and reinstall from the AppStore on all your Macs, if they are running Mavericks.

  • TS3824 How can we install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update if the screen is white and I can't get to the Apple menu?

How can I install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 2.0, if the screen is white and I can't get to the Apple menu?  My computer has 5 vertical purple lines against white screen at startup before the Apple logo appears and the spinning gear...then everything disappears and the screen hangs on the white screen.  I have tried unplugging and removing all my peripherals and the COMMAND, OPTION, P & R set of keys and still nothing.  I have tried COMMAND C to start up from cd and it only tells me to turn off the computer and turn it back on.  I found information on Apple's Support pages regarding the iMac Graphics Firmware Update but I am unable to download and install if I can't get to the Apple menu.  Can anyone help?

You may have hardware problem, I think a visit to your local Apple Store or AASP is in order.

Serial numnbers are platform specific so you will not be able to use it for the Mac if it was initially designated for a PC.  YOu will need to perform a platform swap.  See the following for information:
    Change product platform or language
You can swap languages/platforms for a latest version product if you follow the instructions at the following link:

Another option if you have access to a second Mac with a drive is to connect the two together with the iMac in Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire, and installing from the Mac with the optical drive.
