IMac G3 OS 9.2.2 with DHCP problems

I'm totally new to Macs, so I apologize in advance if I don't know the correct things to mention in this post. I just received two nearly identical iMac G3's (the only difference is one is 350MHz, the other is 400MHz) and wanted to get them onto my home network, which is currently dominated by Windows PC's. I reinstalled the OS on one of the iMacs since its hard drive was wiped before I got it. I used the gray "iMac Software Install" CD with OS 9.1 on it that came with the system. Install worked fine, and the system seems to check out.
I hooked the computer up to an ethernet cable that is connected to my router at home. The link light on the router came on, and Apple's System Profiler says the ethernet connection is active and up. However, running through the Internet Connection Helper, I was unable to get DHCP working properly. I went into the TCP/IP control panel and here's what I have...
Connect via: Ethernet
Configure: Using DHCP Server
DHCP Client ID: [this box is blank]
IP Address: 169.254.84.226
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Router Address: 169.254.84.226
Name Server Address: [this box is blank]
Implicit Search Path - Starting Domain name: [box is blank]
Ending domain name: [box is blank]
Search domains: [box is blank]
Clearly my system is not getting a valid IP address from my router (a D-Link DI-524 with the latest firmware version, 3.20). I checked the system's name in the File Sharing control panel since some people suggested it may be the problem. The name is fine - it is "blue" for one of the iMac's and "indigo" for the other. Creative, aren't I? Anyway, something is going on where the link is up but no DHCP address is being assigned.
I decided to hook the other Mac to the same cable. The exact same problem happens - only "169" addresses are assigned, not the "192" addresses that the router should be handing out. So I decided to test out the cable - it works fine with my Sony laptop. I connect it to the same cable and I'm online instantly. My router is set up to configure computers via DHCP, too, since release and renewal commands on the Sony laptop work just fine. I've rebooted, I've reinstalled the OS, I've updated to 9.2.1 and then to 9.2.2, and nothing seems to work. Both systems refuse to get DHCP addresses, but my Sony, on the exact same cable, works fine. I even changed the port that the ethernet cable connects to on the router - again, the iMac's fail to get an IP while other computers that I try with that cable and that port at a later time have no problem getting an IP.
On a final note, when I set the IP configuration of one of the systems up manually and connect it to the router (forcing it to have an IP of 192.168.0.150, for example), I am able to then ping the iMac from a windows based PC on the network. Also, I am then able to ping the Windows PC from the Mac using a program that I found online to allow me to ping on a Mac. Strangely, I can't ping the router's IP (192.168.0.1) from the iMac even though traffic MUST be going through the router to get to the Windows PC from the Mac and vice versa when I do those pings. I have no problem pinging the router's IP from the Windows PC. It's a really strange situation and I just can't figure it out...
If the cable didn't work with any computer, I'd blame that. If the router didn't assign IP's to my windows boxes, I'd blame the router. If I only had one Mac, I could theorize that it has some sort of problem with its ethernet port. If I couldn't ping in or out, I could also theorize that the link was broken somewhere in-between. But to have the exact same thing happening on 2 iMacs with virtually identical configurations and OS installations is really bothersome, considering all of the other networking equipment has been shown to work properly with the Windows machines. I have a feeling it is some setting that I don't know about on the Macs that must be changed or enabled / disabled, but I just don't know what it is. Any suggestions or help that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
iMac G3 400MHz   Mac OS 9.2.x

Access control lists aren't enabled on the router... like I said, it's strange that the pings are getting through (which an access control list would prevent). I reset the router to factory defaults and the problems I mentioned still remained.
I tried out a different router and suddenly, without explanation, both Macs started working. I guess my D-Link router (DI-524) just doesn't like these iMacs running OS 9.2.2. They work fine with a Belkin router that a friend brought over, though - and that has me satisfied with their condition. Looks like I need to buy a new router, or otherwise contact D-Link to figure out what the problem is. I have a feeling just getting a new router will be easier, though. Thanks for the help. Hopefully someone else searching for help with these iMac models and a D-Link DI-524 router will find this information useful. Oh, and lastly, I have another D-Link DI-524 available... I connected the Macs to it, and again, they couldn't get IP addresses autoassigned via DHCP. This is definitely a compatibility issue between iMacs and this specific router model.

Can anyone help with a problem involving Solaris 10 on dhcp.
Whenever the system (Blade 150) is rebooted and gets a
new dhcp number from the server, it tries to
reload part of what was associated with the old number. This
causes the user accounts not to work (it fails during login and setting

    Hello.
I have a DSL router that is also used as local name server.
I wrote the static IP address of the DSL router (192.168.178.1) into the resolv.conf file:
    domain mydomain.com
nameserver 192.168.178.1Please also check the "hosts" and (for Sol 10) the "ipnodes" entries in /etc/nsswitch.conf. The entries should contain "dns":
    hosts:      files dns
    ipnodes:   files dns
...However this is the default setting for nsswitch.conf so you should normally not need to change this file.

  • Blu-ray can't communicate with DHCP server since I upgraded to Lion

Hi gang, hope someone can help me out. I have a Sony Blu-Ray DVD BDP-N460 that I normally use to connect to the internet and watch streaming Netflix, etc. with no problems, until I upgraded to Lion. Now, for some reason, I get an error message: "Having trouble communicating with the DHCP server." I use a wired connection directly to my AirPort Extreme, and I also use a Motorola SBV5220 SURFboard Cable Modem. I haven't changed my internet servings on my Mac.
Under system settings on my Blu-Ray on-screen display, it says "Physical connection OK, Local Settings OK, Internet Connection Failed." I've tried umpteen times going through the automated setup on my Blu-Ray, where the system automatically detects settings, etc...everything I did when I first set the system up. And I've tried countless manual setting combinations. No luck. This is really weird because I had no problems in the past...the culprit seems to be Lion because this glitch happened simultaneously with my upgrade.
I am not a networking expert so any help will be greatly appreciated.
I'm running Lion 10.7.1 on an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Thanks.

Update: So here's what's happened. I figured I would ditch the Sony and get a $99 Apple TV. I still had the same connection issues.
(FYI my network is now set up like this: Motorola Cable Modem via Ethernet to Time Capsule via Ethernet to Mac. In a separate studio, Airport Extreme wirelessly connects to Time Capsule; Airport Express connects to Extreme via Ethernet cable. For this discussion, only Time Capsule applies, not Extreme as mentioned above.)
I called support, and they had me read my Time Capsule's IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, and DNS Server numbers to them. Then, they had me manually input those numbers into my Apple TV (via my TV screen), number-for-number, EXCEPT they had me increase the last digit of the IP Address by one (for example, my Time Capsule's IP was 10.0.1.2, and they had me make my Apple TV's IP Address 10.0.1.3).
I assume these settings would work on the Sony DVD. I'm so happy with the Apple TV that I don't even want to go back and try.
Sorry, Apple, for blaming the whole thing on Lion. Not really sure why all this happened out of the blue though.
Hope this helps somebody. I'm a happy camper now. Apple TV rocks.

  • I have an older iMAC that once burned CD's with no issues. Now I get an error message saying "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed.Help

I have an olde iMac that once I have an older iMAC that once burned CD's with no issues. Now I get an error message saying "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed. Please advise as to what could be the problem. How to fix. Thanks

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Oracle10g Installation problem on Linux with DHCP IP

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle Products, I have tried to install Oracle 10G on Linux with DHCP IP.
I got the following warning while installing even though I have loopback interface configured.

Problem: The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.
Recommendation: Oracle supports installations on systems with DHCP-assigned public IP addresses. However, the primary network interface on the system should be configured with a static IP address in order for the Oracle Software to function properly. See the Installation Guide for more details on installing the software on systems configured with DHCP.
Please help me in resolving this problem or Can I ignore this message?

This warning means it is not recommended to install Oracle 10g on a DHCP assigned IP address. It could work, but you won't be able to configure Enterprise Manager, since this tool requires a fixed IP address. If possible, have the IP address fixed.

  • IMac (Mountain Lion) does not pair with Apple Remote

    Hi,
my iMac (2009, Mountain Lion) does pair with my remote. Otherwise the remote (or remotes, I tried two) are working fine with the iMac, it just wont pair.
I need it to pair as I have an iMac and MPB and each having its own remote (each computer should react only to its remote, not the other computer remote)
I googled this extensively, here is what I did so far:
    - obviously, trying the normail "pair remote" procedure as the support page says
    - checking that infrared remote pairing is enabled and no other remote is currenly paired
    - restarting Mac OS
    - removing and reinsterting battery in remote
    - making sure I am an Admin
    - disabling the remote function in Plex and killing all Plex (and EyeTV and similar) processes via Activity Monitor (thought they might somehow limite the OS control over the remote)
    - tried the same with another remote (does not pair as well)
    This is very annoying.
    Can anyone help out?
    Much appreciated

    Hi den,
Does the remote remember which computer it is paired to? I though only the computer remebers that.
In any case, currently there is not remote paired to any computer (both computers have clean new Mountain Lion installations). And I cannot pair any remote to any of my machines. In between, I tried with the laptop as well, and it is not pairing as well. I also tried an (old, still working) third remote... nothing is happening.
Some apps seem to take control of the remote (e.g. pressing menu start Plex on my systems). Could that be the issue? Is there a Terminal command to give Mac OS back full control over the remote?
Or could it be something else? 'Is there an app for that' a la ForcePair.app?
    Thank you
p.s. this is the page that I was refering to ealier, not working for me

  • I have Movies on  my iMac that I want to share with Apple TV. How do I do that without also having them synch to my iPhone.  The movies exceed the capacity of the iPhone.

I have Movies on  my iMac that I want to share with Apple TV. I have no problem getting the movies to show up and play on Apple TV. However, when I synch my iPhone to to my iMac all of the movies try to synch to the iPhone and this exceeds the available capacity (32) of the iPhone. So the question is, how do I make the movies available on Apple TV but not synch to my iPhone?

I looked around some more on my iPhone and did find a video app. So all is well.
Thanks so much for your help!!

  • DHCP problem with wireless clients

I've just set up this eqipment
    Router/Firewall ASA 5505
Cisco WLC 2125 - Wlan controller
    Switch Catalyst 2960
    16 Ap's  AIR-LAP1131AG-E-K9
Everything was working fine, but after a while there was a problem, spesially with cell phones with wlan and with some laptops. It seems a part of the users that has been connected, then loggout out and try to log in again. It seems that they then dont get dhcp. Can this be a problem with dhcp on the asa 5505? Or does anyone know of any settings that create problems of this type.
    Trond

    One layman's question:
For DHCP to work, you already permit 0.0.0.0 to ask 255.255.255.255 for its IP adress (i.e port 67 in one end, and 68 in the other).
When a client re-attaches ("logs in again") it will try to use its old adress (the one assigned by dhcp) and ask 255.255.255.255 to renew its adress.
Does your ACLs permit the IP range assigned via DHCP to access 255.255.255.255?

  • Mail on iMac not accessing MS Exchange server but both iPhone and iPad access the same account with no problems.

I have been using an iPhone and iPad to access my work emails via our MS Exchange server for a number of years now with no problems at all.  I recently replaced my home PC with an iMac (first Mac I have owned) but cannot get it to communicate with the exchange server.  I've checked and re-checked the information on the iMac and my iPad - I even deleted the mail account on the iPad and input the details concurrently with setting up on the iMac - but the Mac will not access the exchange server.
I receive the message "The Exchange server "---------------" rejected the password for user "------"  Enter you password again or cancel."  I am using the correct password.  iPad and iPhone are logging on using that password fine.  iMac just ends up repeating this message.
Our IT support at work assure me that there is no reason from their end for it not to work, and reasonably point to it working using the iPhone etc.
I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can provide a solution to this basic, but extremely frustrating, little problem.

iPhone and iPad use a different way of accessing the server.
I don't know the exact details, but we are using Zarafa instead of Exchange and have the same problem:
iPhone and the likes can connect to Zarafas z-push interface, which is some identical interface to the native Exchange interface, while the desktop e-mail application tries to interface with the web front end (via http) of the server.
These are completely different setups and it depends on the actual installation of the server to get this going.
So, you will most likely need different access parameters for the desktop - and the web mail feature has to be enabled on the Exchange server.
In my opinion using the web mail interface is just silly. On the other hand, the native protocol has less features comparedto the web front end, so you are somehow stuck with sins of the past.
    Good luck!

The backup saves many settings, but it copies photos and other files from the computer back to the iPad after IOS5 wipes the disk.   Plugging it into her computer will re-sync it.

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.

After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

My gmail, which is correctly configured for Mail with gmail SMTP and Google IMAP, works for awhile on Mail, which I leave open while working on other applications. But several times a day I get msg from Google: "We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account" . . . and requiring me to verify my account details, re-enter passwords, confirm security settings (or change them from "disable" to "enable less secure methods" and so on). In Mail I also have tried "taking all accounts online", and re-entering my gmail password inside Mail account settings. These steps successfully re-set comms between gmail and Mail ... for awhile, then it happens again. Enough occurrences over a work day that I just quit Mail and revert to accessing gmail directly. Apple Care advisor and an Apple knowledge base article say that Apple can't deal with this, as gmail is third-party app, and they refer me to gmail, and so far I've found nothing helpful there.
From today I also have several instances of a window saying "Mail has unexpectedly closed" and asking me to Re-open it.
I also use Yahoo mail, which stops working with Mac Mail at the same time as gmail, but I do not receive notices to re-verify from Yahoo.
I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. The Mail problem happened occasionally with Mavericks but is far more frequent with Yosemite.

  • Brand new ipod Touch (8GB) does not work with DHCP

I have a brand new iPod Touch (8GB) that will not work using DHCP. No matter what I do (reset router, reset ipod) the DHCP still doesn't work. I can manually setup an IP/Gateway/netmask/etc. and it works but I really need the DHCP to work if at all possible. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G. I was able to use an old Linksys wireless router and the touch gets an IP, etc. with no problems but I can not get my Touch to work with the WRT54G. Any ideas?

  • I have a Panasonic FZ38 HD camera. I can load and view my hd movies onto iMovie with no problems via my camera or a card reader.  When I try to copy my hd videos from my old Windows pc to my new iMac, the picture speed has doubled but the sound is normal.

I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ38 HD camera and have lots of hd movie clips stored on my old Windows Pc using Photofun software supplied by Panasonic, which I want to transfer to my new Imac computer.   I am able to copy my most recent movies that are still on the memory card from my camera onto Imovie and view them with no problems at all.  When it comes to copying my old existing hd movies stored on my Windows Pc (and which are no longer stored on a memory card), I discover that when I view them on the Imovie, the speed has doubled but the sound is normal.   In order to transfer my old movies I have copied them back  onto a memory card (SDHC - the same card as previously used) and then put the card back into my camera and then copied them onto my Imac via the camera USB.   I have also used a card reader but get the same result.     If I view the same movie through my camera, or look at it on my old pc, it plays at normal speed.    Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening please?

have you read and watch the Tutorials..? :
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie
iM is a bit.. iffy, when it comes to the definition, what a 'camera' is. historically, only tape based machines were a movie-camera. nowadays still-cams allow movin' images too..
but, as mentioned above: the intended workflow is: material from photo cameras (even when they move) => import via iPhoto; material from video cameras (even when they don't move.. ) => iMovie
when the import is done, you'll notice in all iLife apps the 'media browser' - in iM09, on the very right, the icon with a camera on.. click it, presto, all (incl. your 'videos') your iPhoto Library at hand for usage in iMovie.
