IMac G3 problems connecting to internet.Updating software

I bought an old iMac G3 running Mac OS 9.2. I can not figure out how to connect it to the internet using ethernet. I have at&t internet with wireless and all that. But the operating system is so old that im lost fooling with it. Can anyone help. Also id like some advice on how to update the operating system to the lastest version that would run on this computer. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Mike,
Welcome to Discussions (or is it Apple Communities that we're meant to call it ?)
OS9.2 on an iMac G3 should work fine for simple internet stuff. You may want to upgrade to somethng like OSX 10.2 or OSX 10.3, but the cost of required memory upgrades, perhaps a bigger hard disk and then the OS itself, may mean it's more efficient to to sell it again and buy an old iMac G4 or an eMac G4. These would be much faster and may already come with enough memory and disk, and maybe even with the OS. eMac G4s are pennies on eBay, if you buy on the right day (ie. not Sunday night), some sellers still try to command £70 / £90, but if you wait you can get one for £10 or top-of-the-range for £40.
Still, stick with the iMac G3 for now and see how you go.
So to get internet working o Ethernet ...
Firt thing to know is that OS9 and earlier are a real pain at detecting when an active connection over Ethernet appears.
So first thing to do is make sure the iMac is connected by Ethernet to the hub/router with a 'patch' cable, as opposed to a 'cross-over' cable. If you're unsure which you have it's probably a patch cable, but if you can try another cable, do so.
This is because the iMac G3 doesn't come with an auto-sensing Ethernet port, like all the G4s and all Macs aftr that did. An auto-sensing port can detect when a cross-over cable is inserted by mistake and make it work anyway.
Once the cable is in and the router is on and working, then start up the iMac.
In OS9 you're going to need to configure the AppleTalk and TCP/IP control panels.
AppleTalk first, make sure it's On, and selected to connect over Ethernet.
Then TCP/IP, select it to connect over Ethernet and to get everything from the router, ie. DHCP, everything else "suplied by router".
Start up Internet Explorer and go to google.com or something, then open the TCP/IP control panel again.
Does it have an IP address assigned ro you ? and a mask ? and a router IP addess ?
Hopefully it'll say your IP address is something like 192.168.x.x, Subnet Mask at 255.255.255.0, Router IP address at 192.168.x.x. And the Internet Explorer window has loaded google.cm for you.
Less helpful is if you still have no IP address in the TCP/IP control panel. This means TCP/IP has not started.
A dead loss here is that the IP address assigned to the iMac is something like 169.x.x.x, a self-assigned IP address that means the iMac cannot communicate at all with the router.
Or do you have some other IP address ?
If you don't have immediate success, try a restart and start Internet Explorer again and open TCP/IP control panel to check your IP address again. The restart is because, like I said before, OS9 is awful at detecting a new connection - there is a fix for this, but lets get the internet working first.
Post back what you tried and what happened and any errors you got. Don't be vague, the more complete and accurate the detail the waier it is for those here to help you get it working in a few minutes.

  • My iPod touch 3rd gen is not updating to the latest software, iTunes keeps saying that there was a problem connecting to the update server...

I don't think I ever registered my 3rd gen iPod. I was never able to update it past its original software because iTunes could never recognize it. Unfortunately, my wife had installed data on it (old & recently purchased) so I've been very hesitant to "Restore" it. I recently plugged it into my laptop & it prompted me to install the iOS 5.0.1 software, but after multiple attempts to do so iTunes keeps giving me the same error message "update  install failed. Connection to the update software server has timed out". How do I update the software without losing all my wife's data?

If you already have iOS5.0, Go to settings-general-software update, scroll to the bottom and hit download and install and this should update it without the computer. Then when you connect the iPod to iTunes, it should say 5.0.1. If this doesn't work, DON'T ERASE IT. Just bring it in to Apple. I had the same issue trying to update to 5.0.  and eventually I got it to work after waiting for a little while. Good luck!

Not sure what to try next, have tried setting up new user to no avail.

Right, I'm going to try something, if this works, then this'll probably fix a lot of iTunes problems.
1: Make sure your whole iTunes database is backed up.
2: Uninstall iTunes, then run "Revo Uninstaller", this will remove ALL traces of iTunes from you computer, not your library.
I've found out that when un-installing or re-installing over a previous version of iTunes will carry over some problems from previous versions, or even create problems. Registry leftovers can be a problem also. Completely removing iTunes using "Revo Uninstaller" then re-installing will have the same effect as installing iTunes from a fresh OS install. Typically iTunes should be problem free when installed totally fresh.
3: Re-install the correct version of iTunes fresh and try again.

  • Issue setting up eFax on HP Photosmart 7510 e-All-in-One "Problem connecting to internet"

I'm having an issue setting up eFax on my new HP Photosmart 7510 e-All-in-One. I am following the on-screen instructions and receive an error "Problem connecting to internet" when trying to register the account. The ePrint service is working, and I can use the facebook app on the printer so it seems to be connecting to the internet. I am uncertain how to resolve the issue.

Let's set a static IP address and external DNS for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • HT4623 My iPad is not connecting to internet after software update what can i do

Hi everyone I just update the software 7.0.4 on my iPad 2 and after doing that cannot connect to internet, can somebody tell me
what to do to correct this issue? Please

You can try resetting your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists.
If yes you can try resetting your Network Settings. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note that you will have to re-enter all of your WiFI passwords.

  • IMac shutting down, problems connecting to internet

I have a 3-year old IMac that I am having problems with. The problems started gradually with trouble putting the computer to sleep, getting the grey film over the computer screen, telling me I need to shut down, and now when it's asleep, it will automatically shut down. When it is asleep, I have trouble waking it back up. I have to press the power button and re-start. Also, I have trouble connecting to the internet. It says "problems connecting to the internet". I have unplugged all cables, power cords, etc. and re-plugged everthing, and I still cannot connect. Any ideas?

  • IMac can't connect to internet dial up after start up.

I've a problem every time I try to make a connection to the internet directly after starting up my iMac. The very first time I try to log on to my ISP the Mac appears to make a connection, the status window in Internet connect indicates that it has (generally 52-54000bps), but when I try to surf, my browser can't find any sites, same with email. I get the standard connection noise when dialing out, occasionally the noise drops out mid way through, but it always makes a connection. Sometimes it will disconnect after about 30-40 secs, sometimes it doesn't. When I reconnect a second time I get good speeds and can stay on for hours. This is happening every time I boot up and dial out, basically I now expect to have to dial out twice before I can get onto the web every time I switch on the computer.
I've read a few threads re this problem, it seems the iMac has a software modem which can cause some problems, but there doesn't seem to be too many complaints about this exact same issue. Should I be getting a Mac tech to sort this out or is this a generic issue that may be resolved in a future software update? This is a new Mac – my second as the first nearly flew out the window after a kernel panic. Apple tech support in Sydney don't seem to have heard of this problem, and have told me to re install the OS again, which of course I have, plus run disk aid and re set the permissions etc etc...
The ISP has given me an alternative dial up number which actually works the first time I dial in, but I only get speeds of 28000bps. Can anyone shed any light on this? Will I get a similar problem if I went to Broadband?
    Thanks for any comments...

Unfortunately I've not got any help on this issue. An Apple tech has told me to try changing the modem settings down to V34 which I did, the connection worked correctly but I was only getting speeds of up to 33000bps, real speed tests showed I was actually only on 28000bps, same as when I dialed the alternative number given by the ISP, not good enough. I don't have any other devices connected to the phone line, in fact the line is only used for the internet. Maybe there is a problem with this type of software modem, but then why isn't there more comments here, unless everyone else is on broadband. Apple and my ISP seem to think the slower connection is more reliable, it is but at a cost. Not sure why this is considered better when the speed is so slowww. Like Seb above I don't have any problems when I'm using a Windows lap top on the same line.
Anyone out there know the answer??? There are at least 3 of us with this problem...

  • IMac unable to connect to internet

Hi. I had this problem immediately after installing the latest update. I was happily browsing the web and then right after I installed the latest update, I couldn't connect to the internet! Neither Safari nor Firefox, not even Yahoo Messenger works. The WiFi network's working fine - I am able to connect to the internet with my other devices.  I am even able to use the internet with the Windows part of my Bootcamped iMac. Nevertheless, I've unplugged the modem and router for more than a minute, I've rebooted, I've run the network diagnostic tool (which said I am connected to my WiFi network) - still couldn't connect to internet. Please help!

  • IMac won't connect to internet anymore

I've had my iMac for over a year now and rarely had any problems connecting to the internet but now I cannot connect at all. I've read people having similar problems and it may be connected to an update but to be honest I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to this kind of thing so would really appreciate some help.
I connect wirelessly to the internet through my home network which uses a BT Home Hub router. Four other computers (all Windows) also connect and there's usually no problems whatsoever. I turned on my Mac today though and I cannot connect to the internet.
I can connect to my home network, although the connection seemingly keeps going down. However, even when I can stay connected to my home network I cannot connect to the internet. I have had brief periods when I have been able to but websites take absolutely ages to load and the internet connection usually goes down shortly after. None of the other computers on my network are affected, so this problem seems to be isolated to my Mac. Sometimes my Mac can't find any other networks so I have tried turning AirPort off and on again and this usually finds me my home network again but sometimes I cannot connect to it straight away, the connection sometimes times out.
My latest attempt to connect to the internet resulted in me turning AirPort off and on again, connecting to my home network but not finding an IP, then it came up with a self-assigned IP, then it lost connection to the network altogether.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and if any more info is needed I will be happy to give it.

I have exactly the same problem. Have a brand new 27" iMac and can't connect to the internet. A MacBook, MacBook pro, and iPhone have all connected with no problem and continue to do so. Won't access the internet, says password is invalid when I know it isn't, if I manage to get connected (4 times out of about 50 attempts), it throws me out after a few minutes. It doesn't remember the connection settings and I have to go through setup every time I try it.
The signal is strong - I have just tested the connection by trying to connect my mobile phone (Nokia) to the wireless. No problem, instant access, first time. Have spent hours on the phone to Apple and their only conclusion is that it is their wireless card and operation system that is causing the problem and the only solution is to get my internet provider to change the settings on my router.
This is the newest Mac. It retails at £1350! Why can an old phone do what the iMac can't? This is so far from acceptable. I am a new Mac user (the others are my girfriend's and her family's) and if it wasn't for the fact that my girlfriend is such an avid mac fan, I would send this back and buy a pc.
    Very unimpressed.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • IMac refuses to connect to Internet

My stepson has a G5 iMac that suddenly started having Internet connection problems today. For the first time, it said today that it had a self-assigned IP address and couldn't connect to the Internet. I tried restarting the computer, resetting the router, etc. Nothing.
So then I entered the IP settings manually, after looking at the router's administrative settings to see what IP address the computer had before. Even after I did that, and it said it was connected to the 2WIRE router, rather than having a self-assigned IP address, it still couldn't connect to the Internet.
If I went back to configuring DHCP automatically, it would give itself a self-assigned IP address and the whole problem would start again.
I cannot figure out what's going on here. Anyone have any ideas? I haven't tried connecting it directly to the router because I don't have an Ethernet cable that's long enough. Yes, I can go get one, or I can move the iMac temporarily to try out the Ethernet connection, but I wanted to see if I can solve this without resorting to one of those things.
    Thanks!

We have 3 other Macs, including an Intel iMac that's connected via Ethernet and a MacBook and an iBook that are both connected via AirPort. They're all working fine. My stepson also has an iPod touch that can get on the Internet through the router.
I was wondering if there's a problem with the router, but I don't understand why it's affecting his computer and not the others.
Last night, my stepson was able to connect to a nearby unsecured router that had a weak signal. He was able to surf the Web, albeit slowly, so I'm wondering if it is indeed the router, which is also my DSL modem. But I still don't understand why it's affecting him and not the other computers.
    Thanks for your response.
