IMac G3 sees 5G USB connection as firewire???

Anyone seen this issue?
Distress call from my neighbour who has an iPod 5G 30Gig video, an iBook G4 and an iMac G3 CRT (2001 slot loader).
The iBook G4 belongs to the school where she teaches, so she wants to have all her music library on her G3 iMac.
The iPod is running version 1.2.1 software.
The iMac is now running OSX 10.4.6 and iTunes 7.02
When she tries to connect the iPod to the iMac's USB 1.1 port she receives a message saying that connection over Firewire is not possible????
The same cable (and we've tried a couple of "known good ones" of my own as well) connects fine to the iBook G4.
Is there an issue with the iMac CRT for this? Any known OS incompatabilities likely to cause the issue? I'm about to try the 10.4.8 combo updater, followed by a restore of the iPod if it doesn't fix it. Thoughts on other possible solutions?
The only other device connected via the USB ports on the computer is the original Apple keyboard/mouse.
Cheers
Rod

Thanks Tony, but the problem here involved a little more than the normal USB 1.1 only issue. In this case, when connected to an iMac G3 USB 1.1 port the computer reported that a firewire connection could not be used. The computer was NOT connected to a firewire port at the time.
The iPod was replaced under warranty and the new one connects to the same iMac G3 without any problems (at USB 1.1 speeds, of course) . This was a hardware defect which prevented use of the particular defective iPod under USB 1.1 altogether, not simply a matter of putting up with slower transfer speeds.
I posted the information about the "solution" for the benefit of any others who may find themselves confronting a similar issue.
I'm afraid you can't use an external drive as a 'bridge" between USB2 and FW in the fashion that you hint at. USB 2 and FW are simply not "bridgeable" in this fashion, and "Combo" HD boxes simply operate on one interface or the other at any one time , not on both simultaneously.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

My iMac is not recognizing any USB connections. Memory Stick and my Elephant Storage do not appear as connected devices anymore. Is there an easy solution?

Then try smc and pram reset.
Did you try the logout/in?  Of course this is redundant if you do the smc and pram reset.

  • IMac late 2013 lost usb connection after efi smc update

    Hi
Lately i purchased a late 2013 iMac with i7 and fusion drive.
After i update to Mavericks and patched new efi and smc update,my mac start to lost usb connectiong when using, from keyboard mouse to my usb sound card, System is not freezing just the usb deviecs. have to press the power button to restart
already tried reset NVRAM and PRAM but doesnt work.

Exactely the Same issue with my iMac 27-fusionDrive3T late 2013, having USB HDs for time machine and data. I contacted the Apple support who propose first level  of support: resets SMC, hard reset and so one without success . I did several trials removing hubs, using different USB (3.0,2.0 and 1.0) and changing devices connections(direct to iMac or through USB hub). I succeeded to find a stable configuration puting audio USB speaker  directly connected to IMac. When I put this USB speaker through USB huband  launch itune music after a certain time all USB chain freeze, and by consequence no more possibility to control the iMac with keyboard, trackpad .... IMac is still working,!  The only possibility is to reboot the machine with tne reset button. Hope also this will fixe in the future OSX release!

  • Imac having problems with USB connections

My Imac keeps intermittently losing connectivity with USB devices.
Frequently, after the machine has been sleeping it fails to recognise the USB pen drive -  which I tend to leave plugged in. Also, on several occasions it's lost printer connectivty. ( which is connected via USB cable)
Rebooting cures the problem but this is a complete pain!
Is there any way to force the machine to simply rescan available and connected hardware?
it's got to be ultimately embarrassing that this is something that Windows does–surely my Mac can too!

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

  • Second iMac as external monitor; Connection via firewire without a deck/cam

Second iMac as an external monitor; Connection by firewire without a deck/camera possible?
I spend a lot of hours to find an answer to the following question, unfortunately without any success:
I’m working with a new iMac (Intel, OS 10.4.11) and Final Cut. Additionally I have an old iMac (G3, OS 10.3.9).
I would like to use the FireWire port to transport a dv video stream from the new iMac/Final Cut to the old one so that the old one can be used as a monitor. So all I want is a software for the old iMac that shows an incoming FireWire dv-stream as a live picture.
I tried vlc, videoviewer, iMovie, Vidi and btv. The problem is always the same: Final Cut (on the new iMac) does not find any FireWire/dv-device nor do all these software on the old iMac find a connection to Final Cut. I think the problem is that both sides are seeking for a device-setup at the FireWire-port on the other side. And none of them sends a signal like „yes I’m here and waiting for a dv-stream“.
Another attempt was ScreenRecycler with VNC-client on the old iMac. Unfortunately on my old iMac Os 10.3.9 is the last possible OS and no vnc client on that system is fast enough to show a video in real time.
I also tried virtualDV from Apples FireWire SDK 20. It works so far, that it claims to be a dv-device (on the old iMac) and so Final Cut at the new iMac says: „okay I’ll deliver you that stream“. The problem now is that virtualDV only can record that stream, not show it in real time.
Is there any solution like virtualDV that shows a live preview and turns the iMac in a FireWire dv-device?
Is there any solution that Final Cut simulates to be a FireWire dv-device itself and that another computer finds that device and understand the dv-stream?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Don't think this is possible.
You're better off using a DAC (for example the one made by Canopus) and put your DV in and get a compatible signal out the other end for connection to your monitor.
I don't understand why you would want to go through a computer first, it would be a waste of time and add a huge delay to the signal.
Finally, I wouldn't use a computer monitor as an external display, it would be useless in my experience. Why not just preview on the one you've got by going full screen in FCP? Also using a computer monitor as a preview/output monitor is not a good idea since it's so different from a normal TV and won't show the correct colour space or issues such as flickering and interlace problems, underscan etc etc.
Seems like you're using a sledgehammer to crack a very small nut and that would be to use a DV camera via firewire and then connect up a monitor from that. (again using a convertor box if you have a connection problem.)

  • Can an airprint printer be shared by a usb connected iMAC?

I have a first generation intel iMAC running OSX 10.6.8, a new retina display iPad and an airport extreme. If I get an Airprint enabled printer, can the iPad share the same printer as the iMAC which would be USB connected?

    No.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
"AirPrint-enabled printers connected using Bluetooth or shared through a USB port of a Mac, PC, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule are not supported."

  • Can't print with airport usb connection only

i have spent the last 3 days searching for help to fix my problem - PLEASE HELP!!!
    using:
    imac osx 10.6.8
    canon image class mf8350cdn
    airport extreme base station
I cannot seem to print wirelessly with my imac using just the USB connection on the airport router.  I can print with the printer locally when it's "hardwired" directly to a usb on the back of the imac.  I can print if i connect a cat5 network cable from the printer to the airport. i can print wirelessly with a PC when the printer is connected with a usb to the airport.  i just can't do this with my imac via the usb connection on the router.  my error message is a Canon CMFP Printer Driver telling me printer is not responding - check the power.....try sending again.
I believe i have tried everything!!!  While i am newer to mac and not the greatest at networking, i have manipulated every setting to match up with all of the online help i can get (trying to not have to send this question!!) and no luck.
i have deleted printers and jobs, reinstalled everything, i changed the cable, downloaded the latest drivers from canon and apple, i updated the firmware on the printer. i even reinstalled my osx and confirmed all is updated on my imac.
i don't want to scan or fax this way - so that is not my issue -- it's just plain old printing using that usb port.
i need all of my other ports on the airport for other things, so i cannot sacrific this one for printing - i just want to use the usb as my printer connection to print with all of the machines i have.
hope my question makes sense and that someone will take the time to give a reply.
    thanks!!
p.s. the closest discussion that matches my issue seems to be this one:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12367897#12367897
but, i still can't seem to get there..........

The most comprehensive set of troubleshooting instructions for printing problems involving Airport printers is found at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107418
It is possible your printer simply cannot be made to work in this manner, and is more often than not a problem with multifunction printers.

  • Connect USB device to Firewire port

Can I connect a keyboard, expansion CD, or other USB-cabled device to a Firewire port on the iMAC?  What brand of USB-Female to Firewire-Male is recommended?

As mentioned, far to different ofvoltages & signals for it to work... thoigh I've seen suh impossible devices for sale out of China.
I think what you want is a good USB hub...

  • Can i connect imac and macbook by usb?

can i connect imac and macbook pro by using USB clable? i just want pass my files and music from macbook to imac.
    thank you

You can't connect both computers by USB. The easiest way is to connect them using a FireWire cable (if your iMac and your MacBook Pro have got FireWire ports), and put your MacBook in target disk mode (start your MacBook holding the T key).
Doing this, the iMac will detect the MacBook's hard disk as an external disk, so you can easily access to your files from Finder and copy the data you want to the iMac's hard disk

  • Anybody connecting older firewire scanners to the newer iMac

I have a Nikon Coolscan 4000 that uses a firewire A output. Since my iMac (late 2012) only has Thundebolt and usb connections, I can't hook up directly. Nikon doesn't support adapter, A firewire to thunderbolt adaptor does not work as the scanner is not visible. Would a firewire to usb be a better option?

I think your two options are: 1) buy new scanner or 2) buy a computer with a FireWire port. The current mini still has a FW800 port (for which I am thankful)

How can i create a new usb connection (service)  on my iMac for sharing internet from my iPhone5 ( i seem have to deleted it )
i know its not a problem whit my carrier o data plan or sharing preferences on the ipone because when i use it un my laptop it works perfectly through
the usb and even works on the Imac through wifi and bluethood tethering but NOT through usb!!.
the problem is that trying to make it work i deleted the "profile" usb iphone on the network prefereces panel. Now i only have 3 options: ethernet / wifi / bluetooth
but not the usb iPhone i used to have.
And when i try to add a new one i dont get a USB option.
can some one help me please??
this is how it looks (after the bluetooth PAN i used to have USB iPhone option)

The question would be more appropriate in the Mac forums as it is not really related to the iPhone.

  • USB connections: iMac mid 2011.

Question about the USB connections: the cable fit is not seated as tight as usual. Any other experience with loose USB connections on the USB ports (4 at the back of computer)

I seem to be running into the same thing or something similar here, same model (27", if that matters). Bought it today, box in perfect shape, machine 100% factory new. Seemed to be working fine, including the Ethernet port. First clue that there was an issue was that Firewire wasn't acknowledging my other machine with a brand new cable, no matter what order of operation I used with rebooting, plugging in, and so forth. Plugged in my external drives and my iPod, and none of them would stay connected. They will connect if you carefully plug them in and align the plugs just right (I didn't spend much time at all jiggling the plugs, because I don't want to mess up my cabling or the ports if I'm just missing something), but if you breathe on the machine wrong, the drives come loose and you get the "improperly disconnected" error. Typing was even knocking them off. So, 9 AM call to Support scheduled, and the store opens at 10 AM. If I find out more as I'm (hopefully) doing a quick exchange, I will let you know.

My iPad camera photos will wirelessly sync with my iMac and iCLoud photo stream, but the videos do not, is USB connection the only way to transfer videos or is there also a wireless method?

Videos are not included with the Photo Stream. Photo Stream is for photos only.
There is not a wireless method for importing videos from the iPad's Camera Roll.

Obviously, syncing an iOS device with iTunes over USB is still supported in Mavericks. Calendar and contact syncing with iTunes is no longer supported. That has nothing to do with your problem.
