IMac G3 still ok for educational software and games ?

I'm planning to buy an iMac G3 (around 500Mhz or better with DVD-ROM) for the kids. I just don't want them to be using my iMac G5 to run educational software and games. My kids are nearly 3 years old so I'm talking about very simple stuff here. But I was wondering : is an iMac G3 still enough to run those kind of things ? I found one, a Snow 500Mhz DVSE with DVD-drive and 640Mb of RAM and a 30Gb HD for €100 (must be about $140) in mint condition. But it's still a G3. I know there's a huge amount of educational software and games out there which can be bought for a few euros/dollars and that software will run efforlessly on a G3. But wouldn't I be better off spending a bit more on a G4 eMac (that would actually be around €300-$440), but then again, why spend that much money on a "play" computer for kids who are likely to bash the screen and keyboard now and again...
Your opinions please...

Hey Rincewind,
Kinichi makes a good point about the durability of the G3s. However I've got 8 in my basement and 30 or so out on donation and my kids and parents have 3. These were all picked up used at garage sales or donated and many have been running for over 5 years now.
That said I'm used to paying less than $40 each for them. Often people give them to me for donation.
I run 9.2.2 in all the one's that go to kindergarten kids with software like:
Kid Pix Studio Deluxe including the latest 4
Memory Fun
Alphabet Express CD
Arthur's Birthday
Curious George ABC.
Tortoise & Hare
TT2.
DLCS - Kindergarten
Carnival Countdown
Pocahontas
Zoombini
All the Living Books series.
note-I run SMIs of all these so you don't need the CD to run the program.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

First man up and admit, that itunes does not suggest, but tells you that update is available and you made a
decision to download and update. Once you man up - think if you still under warranty. If that is not security
software according to the link provided, it is hardware. So second try another network, may be your network
has additional security or firewall. And third decide if it worth to you pay 149 for that phone or get it replaced.
    Unless your 3gs under warranty.

  • MacBook Pro 2011- Allowed updates to install for iTunes software and Microsoft office (I think).  After rebooting, computer wouldn't progress past grey apple screen with loading circle.

I have a MacBook Pro 2011.  I allowed updates to install for iTunes software and Microsoft office (I think).  After rebooting, computer wouldn't progress past grey apple screen with loading circle.  No progression bar ever appeared.  It just sits and spins.  I tried rebooting with Command + Option + R + P and hearing the chime twice....this did not work.
I also tried Command +Option+R which took me to internet recovery.  From there, I chose reinstall Mac OS X Lion 10.7 but it says my hard drive is locked so I wasnt able to select it.  What do I do???? Help!  I don't want to lose my files and it doesnt appear that I've used Time Machine Back Up.

I you upgraded to OS X 10.8, then use RecoveryHD by holding Command R at boot time (no option) and reinstall OS X over itself that way so your installing  Mountain Lion.
Also Disk Uility can be used to Repair the Macintosh HD parttion.
Also you can use that RecoveryHD to format and install OS X onto a external drive, then option/alt key boot from it and access your files on the non-booting internal drive before erasing, reformatting and reinstalling OS X fresh.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive

you don't need a cc subscription to use the purchased copy.
download the installation file and use your serial number to activate when given the licensing option during installation.  you should install 5.7 instead of installing 5.0 and updating.

  • Software and games for mac os 9.1

i been Google searching software and games for mac os 9.1 but i cant find software and games for mac os 9.1? dose anyone know a website to get software and games for mac os 9 only
    thinks mac os x 10.2.8 :]

You might check the computer software section at a local Half-Price Books store, sometimes they have some new in-box Mac OS 9 software.
Some kid games that I used to have were Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam, and the Backyard Sports series from Humongous Entertainment, they run pretty well on an old G3.
Pangea had a demo version of Nanosaur:
http://www.pangeasoft.net/nano/files.html but it may require a good 3D video card.
Freeverse has a link to the original version of Wingnuts that should work in OS 9 on this page

  • We paid so much for the software, and where is the help/support?

I paid so much for my software, and when I needed help, there's no help? seriously? the only help adobe has is community help? helps from the customers to customers? where is their technical support? where is the phone for help? where is the chatline help?

A common cause of frustration is not paying very close attention to product names, for example mixing up Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. If you say the wrong product you end up in the wrong place. Sounds as if you did that with the Chat. Details really matter, even though it is frustrating, because you need to reach the right team.
But we can often help here. A lot of people hang around just for that purpose, and we're a bit baffled when people don't seem to want our help.
You ask "How do I get help when everybody got their own problem and I have mine?"
Same as everyone....You start by describing your problem in detail - we can't start until you do. Be sure to include
    - the full product name and version
    - the operating system
    - what is happening
    - what you expect to happen instead
    - any error messages in full

My iMac has MS Office for mac 2011 and I want to get it onto my iPad 4. How?

    This is not possible.
Apps for the Mac are for Mac conputers only running Mac OS X only. iDevices use Apple's mobile OS iOS. They are not cross compatible OSes.
You would have to use the App Store on your iPad to see if Microsoft has done a scaled down iOS version of Microsoft office for Apple iDevices. I am not sure if they have or not.
The only Microsoft-like office apps for your iPad that are on The App Store for your iPad is Apple's own Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
    Good Luck.

  • Is there a mobile device for just text and games for a child?

is there a mobile device for just text and games for a child?

iPod touch?  That's the only "iPod" that can play games (run apps).  It connects to the Internet over WiFi (not mobile carrier).  It's basically an iPhone without the phone parts.  If you get a used one, earlier models cannot run all the software available to the latest model (include the latest version of iOS).  That may be perfectly OK for a child, but you should look into and understand the imitations of older models, before getting one used or refurbished.  Apple-certified refurb iPod touch is available here
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod
(The current version of iPod touch is 5th gen.)

  • Are you still able to get apps and games that use the 4.2.1 version?

are you still able to get apps and games that use the 4.2.1 verson on a second generation ipod touch?

Yes. To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
    Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.

Any SW or games that are designed to work with S60 3rd. Edition should work with N91.
Just keep in mind that N91 is not QVGA so some themes or apps that ONLY work in QVGA mode may not work in the N91.

I have shared an acount with my mother and now i have moved. Is it possible to create my own acount and still have all my aplication and games available?

Yes, you can keep the apps and music, but not transfer them to your new account, so if you want to download past purchases or update any of them you'll need the password of the apple ID with which you first bought them.

  • IMac or Mac Pro for iPhoto albums and home movie editing?

I have a Mac Pro OS X 10.6.8 with iPhoto 7.1.5. This system is now obsolete for ordering iPhoto albums. I need to upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 to buy a Mac produced photo album. To upgrade iPhoto I need to buy a new Mac as my 2004 Mac Pro with 2008 Snow Leopard can't be upgraded. I will use the new Mac for email, web surfing, iPhoto, and weekend video editing. I use Final Cut Express on my current Mac Pro. I will also need to transfer videos and about 20,000 photos from my current Mac to a new one.
So, here's the question: For my needs (listed above) which is better,
    (1) iMac 27" or (2) new Mac Pro? Then, with the one chosen, how should it be configured to do my basic video editing? I have 100 hours of family video on Hi8 and VCR tapes and will edit these on Final Cut and burn them to DVD's. (I understand both iMac or Mac Pro now require an external DVD set-up.) So, which computer and how should it be configured. Looking to pay between $2500-$3500. Thanks for your help!

What video formats are you talking about? DV, HDV, etc?
Mac Pro is a better solution, regardless. Here's why: Simply upgrading an iMac HD is not enough. You do not want to capture your video to the boot drive. It's too much to ask the drive to manage the OS, your editing software, AND your media. This scenario might work - but is certainly prone to dropping frames. Ideally, you want one drive for OS + editing software & a separate drive to capture media to.
Now, since you can only have a single HD in the iMac, you're demoted to using external capture drives. So let's say you get yourself a FW800 drive for capture and then hook up your camera/deck to an available FW400 port. You'd think you're safe - and again, you may be. But the problem now is that the iMac has ONE and only ONE FireWire bus. So in theory these 2 devices: HD & Camera are battling for the same bandwidth. So you've still got a bottleneck happening.
So DV only would probably work. But it may have issues that the expandability of the Mac Pro can conquer. Hope this helps.

  • Bootcamp XP partition size for OCR software and Outlook

    Hello,
I need to run OCR software (Abbyy Finereader 9) and Microsoft Outlook email on my Mac. How much space should I partition for Windows XP when setting up Bootcamp? I will eventually use Parallels/VMwareFusion.
Specs needed for OCR: 512 MB of RAM, plus 512 MB of RAM for each additional processor core.
500 MB of hard-disk space for typical installation and 512 MB of hard-disk space for program operation.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You realize we are talking GBs of RAM and hard drive space, but you don't say how much you have free now, how much Mac is using, but I can tell you far too many look at how small and then want to resize, rather than give it 2x what you think you need, an old 'rule of thumb.'
Apple's mininum is too low, which is 10GB. XP SP3 and updates ?
So, first question, how large a hard drive do you have?
    Did you backup already?
I'd set aside 30GB as NTFS as a starting point.
