Imac G3 weather station

I tried to do tech support for my son, who purchased an Oregon Scientific WMR968 Cable Free Complete Weather Station. After surfing the web for the ins and outs, we have the complete setup and have a web page with my notes on what is needed. http://homepage.mac.com/keego/MacWeatherStation.htm
With the difficulty that I experienced, I am asking what is the best way to share the info with other user group member and mac users in general.

I find that a very interesting use for an old iMac. I happen to have a couple of old iMacs that could do that job.
I have a couple of questions...
(a) Since the weather station you are using has a full display, what benefits do you get from connecting it to your iMac? It would seem a weather station with no display might be cheaper.
(b) It seems that the Weathertracker web site has really no information describing the features of the software other than one screen shot showing the data displayed in gauges. What features of the software do you find useful?

  • Weather Station Problem

    I have a LaCrosse 2308AL weather station. I am trying to connect it to my intel-based iMac using a Keyspan USA-19HS serial-USB adapter Whether I plug the USB adapter into a powered bus or directly into the iMac, I have trouble. The software recognizes the adapter and the adapter blinks like it is supposed to. But the data will not flow from the station to the software running on the iMac (Leopard) I have done this before on the same computer with the same adapter but under Tiger. Is this a Leopard problem - and if so how do I fix it?

    I emailed LaCrosse tonight. Asked them what I should do. When (if) I get a reply, I will post it. My 2308 is not totally wireless. Wires run from the wind direction/speed detector and from the rain bucket to a "hub". The hub can be wired or wireless. I run it wired because updates are faster. As usual, finding software to run on an iMac is limited. Thanks for your help. I hope to reciprocate.

  • Trouble connecting Weather Station to a 500-164

    Hey all, I have a LA CROSSE weather station that I can't get to work on my new HP 500-164. I have downloaded the software (HEAVY WEATHER). It shows up on the computer but it doesn't work. In the set up I have options to connect to a Com Port No. Then a drop down box with COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4. I have figured out that the ports on the front of the tower are #7 & #8. One on the back bottom is #9. Is there a #1,2,3, or 4? I have hooked this Station up to 2 other HP desktops with no issues. This one is not working for me though. I am not that computer literate but usually can get things done thru process of elimanation. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi AshevilleDon. I did a search on their website for the " LA CROSSE weather station" and I couldn't find a specific model. What is that weather product's model number? What version of Windows do you have on your Desktop?

  • Simulating a Weather Station

    Hello Everybody,
    I wold like to simulate a weather station including thermometer and graphics to measure all the averages of the day, and another graph to calculate wind speed and also a gauge that indicates direction.
    I don't have any hardware, so I would like to do that only with LabView help.......so all measurement will be casual.
    Thermometer is not a problem, but how can I do with wind direction and speed??

    Hi Zunflaz,
    I hope you enjoy your work with Labview!!
    I think that you can simulate very well the wind speed and direction using the mathematical function that you can find in the Functions Labview palette. You can for example simulate the encrease of the speed a RAMP and the direction with a sinusiode waveform.
    I hope it helps.
    Have a nice day.

  • Davis Instruments Vangage Pro Weather Station and LabVIEW

    I am developing a VI for communication with the Davis Instruments
    Vantage Pro Weather Station in LabVIEW.  I need to be able to take the
    current weather conditions off of the weather station and display them
    in a VI.  The Weather Station will be connected via RS232 to a Compact
    Fieldpoint.  Currently I am planning on sending the request command
    over the serial (through VISA?), which would return a signal containing
    all of the the needed data (which could be parsed within LabVIEW).
    Does anyone know either how to do this or a better way to communicate
    with the Weather Station?
    Thank you,
    Joshua

    Joshua:
    Nice find on the Davis site, I haven't been there in years....
    Looks like you have a couple options.
    1. They have documented the serial command set and data format. You can look in LabVIEW help and search examples for serial communication (like Basic SerialReadandWrite). Set up the COM port accordingly and send a simple command and read the response as a test. To create a driver, at least in LabVIEW 8.2, under Tools/Instrumentation/CreateInstrumentDriverProject- use a GeneralPurpose (Message Based) for a source driver. I never have used it, but it may get you quicly started on the path. You can also probably use Windows Hyperterminal first as a sanity check before trying LabVIEW.
    2. They also have a nice dll library that appears to be well documented. Within LabVIEW, you can make calls to the dll and get data back. As long as it was written in C osr stdcall, you can use the CallLibraryFunctionNode function. There is a section in the LabView Help- Calling Code Written in Text Based Languages that describes how to do this.
    Hope this helps
    -AK2DM
    Edit: I just saw you are using Compact Fieldpoint- Not sure what that is and how it may affect use of the options above.

  • Using iMac as base station

    First, forgive me as I new to Apple (former PC).
    I have the new iMac 27" i7 and was told that it has a built-in Airport Extreme. I just purchase an Airport Express and can't figure out how to get the AirPort Utility to recognize my iMac as the Base Station.
    I have DSL (through ATT) hardwired from the DSL modem to my iMac. I would like to use the AirPort Express as a bridge so I can connect my Directv HD-DVR to the network, wirelessly.
    I've heard that this is possible but I just can't get this to work.
    Thanks

    MrMetrx, Welcome to the discussion area!
    I would not recommend doing this. You will get much better control and flexibility by using any inexpensive wireless router.
    If you want your Mac to act as a base station, you need to go to System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and enable Internet sharing to AirPort.

  • IP Issues on i7 iMac and Aiport Station

    I bough the iMac not even two weeks ago and it worked wonderfully. I just did a iMac Firmware Update via the Software Update tool and now every time it goes to sleep it some how comes back with the following Wifi Error:
    Another device is already using the 192.168.1.79 IP.
    The network is set to Auto DHCP and so is the Apple Airport Station (802.11n). I also have several other Macbook Pro 15" laptops, one Macbook 13", and 3 smart phones running of the same Airport Station and they all seem to connect just fine.
    Now I'm regretting in doing the firmware update on this machine.. nothing but issue. Anyone having the same issue and can possibly provide an answer.
    Also.. I tried setting up the IP Manually and it works until it goes to sleep, then stops working as if it can't get a connection out to the internet.
    Help is always appreciated!

    I was pleasantly surprised as well!
    I ordered mine in the afternoon on the 26th and it was here on March 1st. Migration assistant worked well with transferring everything from my 24". I'm just wondering if anything has to be tweaked with it. I thought I had read somewhere that there are certain settings to change to make the machine fully optimized as far as speed is concerned. Maybe I was seeing things. Seems fast enough right now!

  • Can I network 2 iMacs without Base Station?

    I have two iMac's with airport extreme cards in them. Can I network them together without having a base station? If yes, where can I read how to do this?
    If I can network them together without the base station and just airport to airport in each iMac, can the one iMac without internet gain internet access if the 2nd one does have internet and the sharing feature for internet is turned on. My goal is to get internet access on a iMac in another room via and airport to airport connect with no base station.
    Thanks

    To meet your goal, you can use Internet Sharing to share the wired Internet connection of first Mac wirelessly with the other.
    To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Enable Software Firewall
    System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
    - Click Stop to start the software firewall
    Setup the Network
    Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] Mac_#1 > (wireless) > Mac_#2
    Setup Port Order
    System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
    - Verify that "Built-In Ethernet" is at the top of the list, followed by "AirPort".
    - Click "Apply Now."
    Configure the Internet Connection
    System Preferences > Network > Show > Built-In Ethernet > TCP/IP
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Enable Internet Sharing
    System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
    - Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
    - To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    - AirPort Options
    -- Network Name: <anything you want>
    -- Channel: Automatic
    -- Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
    -- Password: (optional)
    -- Confirm Password: (optional)
    -- WEP Key Length: (optional)

  • How do I create a wireless network using iMac as base station

    How do I set up a wireless network using my iMac as the Base Station and boosting the signal through an Airport Extreme?
    Physical connection would be DSL Modem> (ethernet) iMac >(wireless) Airport Extreme (as a wireless router for other Apple products i.e. TV, iPhone, etc.)

    How do I set up a wireless network using my iMac as the Base Station and boosting the signal through an Airport Extreme?
    Unfortunately, the wireless network that is setup from the iMac cannot be "extended".
    Your setup will need to include two Apple routers and look like this:
                                                         > Ethernet to Imac
    DSL Modem > Main Apple Router    >>>Wireless to nearby wireless devices
                                                         >>> Wireless to Extending Apple router
    You may also connect the iMac to one of the Ethernet ports on the Extending Apple router if you wish

  • I need to run an iMac as a server, without a keyboard

    I have an iMac that I am using to connect to a weather station via an USB port. It runs 24 hours a day, with a self-reboot every night (because the USB port connection is not always stable over long periods.) Scripts get weather data and upload it to a web site. I have no need for a keyboard on that computer, it would be wasted 99% of the time.
    It operated for months without a keyboard. But, about a week ago, every time it reboots at night, it comes up with the Bluetooth Keyboard assistant asking to connect to a (nonexistent) keyboard. This dialog prevents the screen from going to sleep until I simply Quit the Bluetooth Keyboard assistant and reset the sleep timer on  the display.
    Can anyone tell me why this started happening? And, how can I tell the computer that I don't want to use a keyboard, so stop asking for one?

    What iMac do you have? The only iMac capable of being use as a monitor is a iMac 27" if that is the model than take a look at this link, http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=104008

  • Conky and noaa weather from xml

    i am looking into trying to retrieve weather data from noaa xml file for locations then displaying it in conky. i am having trouble just extracting the data i want without downloading the xml file to the computer let alone getting it to appear in conky.
    i have tried wget | grep but all that happens is the file gets downloaded and grep part does nothing.
    can someone point me in the right direction  that may help me
    thanks.

    I really don't know where I learned all this, mostly just google over time.
    I believe that the weather station you are using is from La Guardia airport which is KLGA.
    You can perhaps find a better station here.
    Below is a script you may modify to suit your needs.
    A little information about the script.  It uses wget to download the file into in /tmp/weather. On Arch Linux, /tmp is not actually on disk, but is in shared memory.  Thus the .xml file will be downloaded into shared memory.
    Since it appears that the weather data is updated once per hour (as near as I can tell), the script will not try to retrieve new data until at least one hour and 15 minutes after the last observed time.  (I chose 1:15 since at La Guardia at least, there is about a 11 minute delay between when they make a weather observation and put the data online.) If the new data is still old (which could happen if the weather station is having problems or maintenence, etc.) then the script will keep trying to get new data roughly once every five minutes until the station comes back on line.
    The script takes the weather station (KLGA for instance) as a command line parameter so you could easily use a different station.
    #!/bin/bash
    station="$1.xml"
    wdir='/tmp/weather'
    update_xml() {
    if [ ! -e "$station" ]; then
    wget -q http://w1.weather.gov/xml/current_obs/${station}
    [ -e "$station" ] && touch "${station}"
    else
    # dtime: time the .xml file was downloaded
    # otime: time the weather data was observed
    # ctime: current time (time this script is being run)
    dtime=$(stat -c %Y $station)
    otime=$(date -d "$utime" +%s)
    ctime=$(date +%s)
    if (( "$otime" + 4507 < "$ctime" )); then
    if (( "$dtime" + 307 < "$ctime" )); then
    wget -q -O "$station" http://w1.weather.gov/xml/current_obs/${station}
    [ -e "$station" ] && touch "${station}"
    fi
    fi
    fi
    from_xml() { xmllint -xpath "//$1" - <<< "$xml" | sed 's/<[^>]*>//g'; }
    [ -d "$wdir" ] || mkdir -p "$wdir"
    cd "$wdir" || exit 1
    xml=''
    [ -r $station ] && xml="$(< $station)"
    ( update_xml >/dev/null 2>&1 ) &
    if [ -n "$xml" ]; then
    location=$(from_xml "location")
    utime=$(from_xml "observation_time_rfc822")
    weather=$(from_xml "weather")
    temperature=$(from_xml "temp_f")
    humid=$(from_xml "relative_humidity")
    wind_dir=$(from_xml "wind_dir")
    case "$wind_dir" in
    "North") wind_dir="N" ;;
    "South") wind_dir="S" ;;
    "East") wind_dir="E" ;;
    "West") wind_dir="W" ;;
    "Northwest") wind_dir="NW" ;;
    "Northeast") wind_dir="NE" ;;
    "Southwest") wind_dir="SW" ;;
    "Southeast") wind_dir="SE" ;;
    esac
    wind_speed=$(from_xml "wind_kt")
    baro_pressure=$(from_xml "pressure_in")
    echo "$location"
    echo "Updated: $(date -d "$utime" 2>/dev/null )"
    printf 'Weather: %s %s°F\n' "$weather" "$temperature"
    printf 'Barometric Pressure: %s inches\n' "$baro_pressure"
    printf 'Wind: %s at %s knots\n' "$wind_dir" "$wind_speed"
    printf 'Humidity: %s%%\n' "$humid"
    else
    echo "No weather data available."
    fi
    Then in your .conkyrc do (don't forget the KLGA):
    ${exec /path/to/script KLGA}
    Finally, I see that there are also a set of thumbnail images that NOAA provides that coorespond to the current weather conditions. As conky is capable of displaying these thumbnails, you could set up conky to do that as well.  It is a little more involved, so let me know if you are interested.

  • Today notification not showing weather

    Two computers are set up exactly the same, or so I think, other than them being two different models. In the Notification Center there is a weather extension This is not in reference to that extension. This is in reference to the Today extension. On one machine the Today extension gives the day, date, and text summary of the present weather and predicted high temperature. This was also the case in the previous version of the Notification Center. For some reason one of the computers does not show this weather summary. Preferences are exactly the same in all places affecting the Notification Center i.e. Preferences>Extensions>Today, Preferences>Security & Privacy>Location Services, Preferences>Notifications and in the Notification Center Edit pane.
    What else affects the extension and/or why is the weather statement not there on the second machine?

    I have run into this as well except mine will show for a while then disappear.   I spoke with Apple Care, created a fake account and it worked fine, they then deleted some preferences in my usual profile and it worked for about a week.  I then reinstalled the OS and it worked fine for about a week.  Now I'm back to it not showing.
    I've noticed when I turn on wifi on this imac the weather will then show.  If I cut wifi off then the weather will mess up again.

  • Adding Weather Link

    Hi,
    Is there some way to either paste in or add the code
    to have a live weather reading on a site with iWeb?
    I was able to open the html in Dreamweaver and paste
    it in there but was hoping I could do things like
    that directly in iWeb.
    Thanks,
    Carl

    I'm trying to do something similar I think. Below is a post I had on the iDisk formum but maybe someone here can answer it.
    Thanks,

    "I have a weather station that generates images of weather data every 15 minutes. I am trying to get this to post to our website but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm not sure if I have the path incorrect or what. Our website is hosted at http://homepage.mac.com/kiawahlakes/LakesDepartmentFolder/LakesDepartment/index. html. I have a folder at http://homepage.mac.com/kiawahlakes/LakesDepartmentFolder/LakesDepartment/Weathe r where I have a html file, CurrentVantage_ProPlus.htm, with links to the weather images, which also reside in that folder. If I copy them there directly, the page shows up but I can't seem to get the setting in the WeatherLink software to upload the files to that folder automatically. In the WeatherLink software, it asks for my:
    1) FTP Host:
    2) FTP Logon:
    3) FTP Path:
    Can I use my idisk/.Mac account for this since it is asking for FTP not WebDAV? If so, do I use http://homepage.mac.com/ or http://idisk.mac.com as the host? And the Logon would be my .Mac account name, is that correct? And the FTP path would be /kiawahlakes/LakesDepartmentFolder/LakesDepartment/Weather? And should there be the "/" before kiawahlakes and should there be a "/" after Weather?
    I'm using Adobe GoLive for the website if that matters at all.
