IMac G4 800 17inch won't boot.

Hi,
I posted a topic some months ago about a problem I was experiencing with an old G4 iMac I own. The problem is still not fixed so here's an update of the problem.
Spec;
iMac G4 17inch 768 mb ram, Airport card, OS X 10.2.8
When you turn on the computer all i get is the grey screen with the apple logo. No spinning timer to say its booting up. It stays like this until you turn it off.
What i've tried so far;
All usb devises etc have been disconnected ( only keyboard and mouse left)
Reset the PRAM
Reset the Power management unit
Inserted the installer disk, held down C but still it won't boot to the installer / disk utility options. However the timer wheel appears but nothing happens
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a lose end as to what to do next!
Thanks

Hi! You've tried most things but try holding the "x" key down at boot and if that doesn't work try the shift key. have you tried the hardware test disc? Tom

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • 17" White iMac w/Bootcamp XP won't boot.

I have a 17' white iMac with Leopard and Bootcamp with XP installed, and it was stopped by punching the power button.
Now it won't boot at all. Usually I just get the gray screen that comes up after the chime and a moveable cursor.
Sometimes, if I unplug it for several hours, I can boot and hold the OPTION key and get the two HD-pictures for OSX and XP, but when I get these it will boot into the op sys, but then hangs.
I can boot into TARGET mode and have ordered a 800/400 Firewire cable to try and get stuff off the computer to my 24" 09 iMac. Most of my data is on the Bootcamp Windows partition.
    (a) Will reinstalling OSX from DVD destroy Bootcamp partion?
    (b) Any way to run OSX (or XP) from DVD so I can access the HD?
    (c) Any other tricks or links to things to do?
    Thanks.

  • IMac G5 Power PC won't boot past the grey apple and pinwheel

After everything froze and having to shut down (holding the power button), it won't boot past the grey apple and pinwheel. After a few seconds, the fans speed up and then nothing else.
*it won't boot into safe mode (holding shift)
*booting to OS on DVD works but then freezes after select language and hit "continue"
*disk utility shows the actual hard drive name but no disk image/partition is listed for me to repair or change
*running the system hardware diagnostic CD returns a list of "passed" for all hardware
I did have the logic board replaced during the extended warranty period a few years back and have not had any issues at all since.
    Any thoughts, suggestions, tricks/tips?

Perfect diagnosis. I replaced the HD and reinstalled the OS. Back in business! Thanks!

  • HP EVNY 800-060 won't boot after NVIDIA drivers were uninstalled

Here's my setup/things I've changed since I bought this machine.
I took the NVIDIA graphics card out and replaced it with an AMD R9 290X.
    I added a Samsung EVO 840 250GB SSD.
I installed Windows 8.1 to the new hard drive (with my own personal key) and made it the main drive.
    I installed the AMD drivers.
    ~1 year passes.
I've been having graphics card problems and I think it has to do with the NVIDIA drivers that were bundled as part of the driver package for this machine. I uninstall them.
Bam, computer won't boot. It gets to the Windows 8 logo with their loading dot circle below it, then the screen goes black. I can move the mouse around but it disappears and reappears in the center of the screen every few seconds.
I boot into system recovery, run a diagnostic. It ends quickly saying that it can't fix the problem, insert Windows disk. I checked the log file, it says "a hard drive could not be detected".  I can run through the command prompt and execute files on the drive that can't "be detected", so it's clearly there and working fine.
I'm having tons of fun finding a repair disk on the internet to download and burn from another computer (thanks, Microsoft).
Any tips? I'm considering testing the aerodynamics of this tower soon.

When I installed the driver package from HP, it came with the NVIDIA drivers. I let them install, then ignored them because they could see there was no NVIDIA card anymore.
    1 year passes.
I'm having graphics trouble, so I uninstalled the NVIDIA drivers to see if they are the problem. Now the computer won't boot. All I did was uninstall those drivers, and now the PC doesn't see an OS on the drive.
It's still there. I can start the computer's system recovery and browse through the file system, so the disk is still there.
The drivers are the issue because uninstalling them made my PC not boot. Why? How? What do the graphics drivers even have to do with booting?
Edit: Ran chkdsk, everything works, no bad sectors.

  • IMac ate DVD, now won't boot...

    Hi,
After using iDVD I had the dreaded "ate the disc" issue, with the typical grinding noise and the lack of ejection. I figured I would play it safe, power down the machine so it wouldn't be reading it, and boot it up again and eject it using the keyboard / mouse button options that are suggested here.
Except it won't boot at all.
I'm stuck on a grey screen, the HD does nothing, and the DVD drive grinds from the instant the power is on.
I have literally no options that I can think of - it just sits and grinds and does nothing, won't boot, won't target disk, won't do anything. None of the hold-buttons-at-start will do anything, because the machine won't get that far. The drive starts grinding before the screen even lights up.
    Help!

Ok, now it appears to have booted, but the disk is still in there. I'm doing a full Time Machine backup (justincase), but after that... what to do?
I really can't be without this machine for two weeks and it was a custom order so a replacement isn't going to happen.
As someone who works for Apple's biggest UK reseller, am I seriously having to reconsider whether I even want to work there any more - no reflection on my employers, obviously, but this is 3 bad machines I've had from Apple in one year and the return rate I've started seeing on hardware is utterly appalling.
The nosedive in quality after using them for over 8 years is simply astonishing.

  • Installed the latest Java update today on my older iMac and now it won't boot up at all. 2007 model worked fine this morning, now disk first aid say boot blocks f'ed.

I am using an older mid 2007 imac 24 inch running snow leopard 10.6.8
I normally accept software update recs, and today when installing the security update to java, all went fine till restart, when I got the universal "NO" sign, the circle with the line through it and just spinning gray bars underneath.
Booted from system disks, ran first aid, said the boot block partitions or something like that needed updating but disk appears to be ok. Still not working.
Do you think Alsoft Disk Warrior will fix? I am running off external back up drive now.
Thanks for any help or advice. Apple as usual is as useless as tits on a bull, or a screen door on a submarine, pick your simile...

If your backup's up to date it might be less hassle to erase the internal and clone back from the backup. Don't allow the update next time it appears - you're not the only one having problems it would seem.
Note; the message "updating boot partitions" is a standard message that appears after a repair run. It won't go away and should be ignored.
Provided the message "The volume Macintosh HD Seems to be OK" in green has appeared, your disc fle system is fine.

  • IMac G4 700 MHz won't boot

    Hey there all,
A cousin got an old iMac G4/700MHz running Mac OS 10.4.x. It worked fine when she bought it but, now it won't finish booting. I've turned it on and it won't get beyond the gray screen with the little gear cycling. I zapped the P-RAM and still nothing. What else might be the issue? It's a Mac for her elementary school-age kids, for school work(research) and web-surfing to kid-friendly sites. There are no external devices connected to it not even speakers, just a keyboard and mouse.
TIA for any assistance or suggestions.

Try starting in Safe Mode, with the Shift key depressed during startup until you either get a desktop or a message saying that you are in Safe mode. If this gets you a desktop, don't use the computer just yet. Do a regular restart. If you still get a desktop, it's probably OK. If not, post back.
If the computer has been stored off wall power for any time, or unplugged from the wall every night, the internal logic board battery is likely dead. That can cause startup issues. However, on this model iMac, it takes the same effort to get to the battery as it does to replace the hard drive. Although neither is considered a "user-serviceable" part, should you feel comfortable with dealing with computer innards, google for "iMac G4 takeapart" to find instructions. Illustrated instructions are out there and they may help you assess your comfort level with home repair.

  • Is there hope an iMac Bondi Blue that won't boot?

I have an original Bondi Blue iMac 233MHz, Rev. A. I upgraded the RAM to 128MB about 2 years ago, and it has been operating on 10.2. It had been working perfectly until last week. When the power button is pressed to start the computer, the startup chime is heard, the power button light changes from amber to green, the gray screen comes up with the black Apple icon, and eventually the little gear-shaped thing starts spinning...and that's as far as it goes. I hear it grinding away from time to time, but it never goes beyond that point. The only way to shut down is to unplug the machine.
I've reset the PRAM, tried starting with extensions disabled, checked the battery, and tried to boot from a start-up disk, but nothing has made any difference. I wouldn't mind if the computer has given up, but there are some things on it that I'd really like to retrieve, and I can't even use it as a target disk with a Firewire. It doesn't have a Firewire port, and it won't start up in Target mode.
Is this the end of the line for Old Blue? Could the 128MB RAM card that I installed be faulty and causing the problem? Any other ideas?

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my question. Yes, I had read that article and done each of the steps recommended, but have had no luck. I'll look into your suggestion of removing the hard drive and trying it a Firewire or USB enclosure. I don't have either one as an external device, so will have to determine first whether or not this would be cost effective.

  • 1st gen iMac G5 Crashes and Won't Boot Up

To whom it may concern :
I've been having problems with my 20" iMac G5.
It frequently freezes and a message that says I have to restart my computer by pressing the power button for a few seconds appears.
At first, after I've done as the message said, my computer booted up successfully and after startup a message that says "Mac OS X quit unexpectedly" appeared, although when I pressed Report it did nothing.
For the past few days, the same as above occurs except when I try to boot up my system it starts booting up and freezes on a black screen while the computer backlight is on.
If I'll leave it on in this state for a minute or two, the fans will begin spinning at maximum speed (I believe so due to the great noise and mild dust they will produce when doing this).
I should state that it freezes randomly and not after a specific action: when I multi task, when I return to the computer after being idle (screen saver or the monitor was off) or even when no programs are running.
Does anyone know what's wrong with my Mac ?
    Please Help !!

Boot up from your Tiger Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

well I went and removed the 256 ram in the bottom and the computer booted sucessfully.
So from this can I say it's is either the ram or the bank on the logic board holding the user installed ram is bad (requiring a new logic board?)
Will have to find a good set of ram somewhere to install and see if it boots, thus showing the ram I took out is bad.....????

  • IMac turned off suddenly, won't boot from hard drive/CD drive

    Hi guys.
    Here is what I have:
    27" iMac with:
    Core i5 2.7
    4GB RAM
    Mountain Lion
    Win7 on Bootcamp
Lion is installed, but I have the Snow Leopard install disc.
The system had just been recently reformatted so there wasn't really much on the computer itself other than an update to Mountain Lion and a Win7 install via Bootcamp. Other than that, nothing was recentlly installed.
What happenes is I was browsing and all of a sudden it completely shut down. No warning, nothing. Completely shuts down.
Okay.. weird... but when I try to load Mac back up, the Apple logo appears and then after a while of supposedly loading, the screen goes to a plain white screen until I force the computer off. Something similar happens when tryin gto boot into Windows: I get to the "Starting Windows" screen but after that everything goes black and I have to shut down manually.
Great. Now I'll just go into recovery and fix all of this right? Wrong. Can't boot into recovery either. Similar end result: white screen.
Last thing I tried is reinstall OS X Snow Leopard. After loading for about 1-2 minutes, the usual white screen appears after trying to boot from the disc.
I am at a loss. I don't think its the hard drive, because the problem occurs even when trying to boot from the disc. My suspicion is the RAM has gone bad. But, before I go the hardware route, is there any suggestions or recommendations anyone could make first?
In advance, I really appreciate anyone who replies and tries to help.
    Thanks.

    Xmotox,
I had the EXACT problem today. EXACT. Discs wouldn't boot, I did get the application disc to run the AHT but it said all was fine.
I called my buddy who said something about unplugging for a minute then holding power button while plugging the power supply back in. I thought it would be futile since we already did all the SMC reset procedures to no avail, PRAM reset didn't do anything, etc, etc... But what do you know, up pops the disc utility and my iMac is now restoring from time machine. It's not done yet, so I can't say it worked... BUT it's the farthest we got tonight. Could not get disc utility up via CMD-R or OPTION keys... but powering down, unplugging for a minute or so, then holding power button while plugging the power supply back in did the trick. Hope this helps!

  • 800 Mhz won't boot

We had an 800 Mhz emac that was sleeping when the power went out here at school. When the power came back on, the computer was still in sleep mode and would not wake up. After getting it shut down, it will not reboot. When powered on, you can hear the fan running, but nothing else. It will not boot from a CD, firewire drive, or in Target mode. No external video either. I have left it sit unplugged overnight, zapped the PRAM, reseated the RAM, replaced the CMOS battery, and reset the button inside. There is no airport card so that isn't the problem. Attempting to reset Open Firmware was done blind since there is no video (not even a gray screen). AppleCare expired in June. At first I immediately thought HD failure, but if that is the case, it should at least try to boot up, shouldn't it?. Any ideas? The secretary needs her computer back. Thanks

If the fan is powering up, it's not the switching power supply latching up, and you've already tried pulling the power cord from the side of the eMac for at least 30 minutes after unplugging all peripherals (that's how I read your "left it sit unplugged overnight"). You've already tried the known troubleshooting steps, including checking for video from the miniVGA out port, target disk mode, and external/CD drive bootup.
Does the power LED on the fron of the eMac come on? When you inserted the CD, did you hear or feel the disc spinning?
When you zapped the PRAM, did you hear any tones from the Mac?
About the only thing you haven't mentioned trying is replacing the eMac's keyboard/mouse with a known-good one from another USB Mac. I've never heard of a power outage damaging a keyboard (power surge, yes, but not outage), and if the USB ports had latched up, leaving the eMac unplugged overnight should've reset them, but that's about the only thing left you haven't already tried.
    Good luck!

  • My iMac 27" (mid-2010) won't boot up.

I had recently received a warning that the hard disk was nearly full.  Now what I get is the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning 'gear'.  For a brief time (1-2 minutes) there will be a status bar below the spinning gear.  This appears to show about 5% progress, then disappears and just the logo and spinning gear are left and it just stays like this.  I had hoped installing additional RAM would help and upgraded from 4 to 8 GBs (purchased through OWC).  This did not help.  I have tried booting up in safe mode (holding down the shift key) and the "DVRAM zap" (holding down the Control, Option R & P keys) when starting the computer.  I have also tried starting using the OSX Tiger install disk (10.4.3) while holding down the C key.  I keep getting the same result.  One thing to note is I am trying this with the wireless keyboard.  I do not have a USB keyboard.  Will these attempts be "recognized" with a wireless keyboard or do I need to use a USB keyboard?  Also, not sure what OS I'm running currently.
    Thank you for your help.

Tiger will not boot a 2010 Mac.  The oldest operating system that might work is Snow Leopard (10.6).  Being it is mid-2010 iMac, it has to be the pre bundled 10.6 installer disc that came with it from Apple labelled iMac.  If you are missing that disc, call AppleCare.
DVRAM is not what it is called. NVRAM and PRAM can be reset, if the machine is under 4 years old.  Over 4 years old, the PRAM battery may be too old and cause the machine to be frozen until the PRAM battery is replaced.
A too full hard drive often lends itself to a corrupted directory and trouble booting up.  Once your hard drive exceeds 85% capacity, it should be cleared, and excess data archived away on other other media that you don't regularly backup in a clone or otherwise.
Upgrading the RAM may help speed things up, but does nothing to help the hard drive is too close to capacity.
So the big question is, is your data backed up or not?
If not, you may need to get a larger hard drive to recover data to as documented here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
You need to get a USB keyboard, preferably an Apple or MacAlly if you want to boot the machine with the startup manager.

  • IMAC powerpc G5 sporadically won't boot up?

A few weeks ago my IMAC decided sporadically not to start up. It did this quite a few times over a period of a couple of weeks and I put it down to user error (not that I don't know how to push a button, but, you know!!). Anyhow the last few mornings it has simply refused to boot up and I'm talking not even a flicker of life.
I have tried unplugging everything and starting it with just the power cord, pressing the power button firmly, softly, talking sweetly to it, ignoring it (you get my drift!) I have even set it to automatically start itself up on a morn and shutting itself down of an evening and that seemed to work, until the weekend. Again after most of the day pushing the power button it did come on (all applications working fine by the way), same happened today I worked on my other mac and kept trying the power button when all of a sudden one more try started the blummin thing!
What can I do??? It's driving me demented!
    Thanks in advance

    nothing, nada, zilch!!
well...it has worked fine, then for no reason one day it refused to come on when pressing the power button, yet a few minutes later it did. This has got steadily worse till at the weekend it wouldn't come on for hours...then it did, to say I'm confused....I had amended the prefs so that it automatically came on every day, I previoulsy had it starting only weekdays (I then didn't worry about it not coming on) and that worked fine till this morn when nothing, not a blip, flash, hum, fan or anything. But again about 2 hours later I tried again (after much trying in those two hours) and it hummed into life working perfectly?
Apart from that the machine is working brilliantly. Although a few weeks ago it springs to mind that the date did go back to the 1960's once.
Its pretty annoying to say the least, am hoping for a cheap option!! I did take the back off and blew a few cobwebs away but I don't really know what I'm looking at.
Thanks for any help you can give
