IMac G4 800 vs  20 in Intel Imac

Every 6 yrs or so I like to upgrade my Mac
I have owned and loved the LISA, original Mac, Mac 512, Mac +, LC, Mac II, PM 6500 and currently , the Lampshade G4 iMac 800
Is it time to go to the intel Mac 20"
Methinks yes, but some honest, current user of th intel Mac feedback is sought
Thanks

Don't forget these other compelling reasons to upgrade:
The new (intel) imac has an option for a 256 MB video card, the largest card available in an imac to date (the G5 imac maxes out at 128MB).
and (my favorite)
The new imac supports extended desktop. This feature alone convinced me it was worth upgrading. I am hooked on using two monitors in extended mode (currently use my powerbook with an external monitor). Once you've tried it, you really get spoiled with the extra screen space. Anyway, I was pretty much set on getting one of the new imacs when they were announced at Macworld expo, but I've always regretted that imacs were limited to mirrored mode with external monitors. When I heard the news (about extended desktop support) that was the clincher! The new imac will be ordered within the week (a 20" model, with 2GB RAM and the 256MB video card)!
I am also upgrading from a "lamp" style G4 imac (1 Ghz, 17" model), so I am sure I will see a big jump in performance, even with Rosetta translation. And I am confident that new universal software (including games) will be rapidly coming down the pipe. I had actually quit buying games for my old imac because performance (with 64 MB VRAM) was getting outdated when it came to newer games (like Doom).
I was a buyer of one of the original bondi imacs (still have it, running Panther), and I want to be an owner of one of these first machines to start off the next era of Apple computers.

  • How do I cable a FW 400 and a FW 800 to my 24" Intel iMac?

This is a "duh" question, but I've only been a Mac user for a year.
I have an early 2008 24" Intel iMac with a 1 TB HD and 4 GB of RAM. I also have a 15" MBP (summer 2007 vintage).
My main computer is the iMac. I have two external HDs, a G-Tech Mini 500 GB drive with USB2 and FW 400 and a new OWT FW 800 750 GB drive. They are both used for backup--not using Time Capsule.
How do I cable the two drives together and then to the iMac? I have file sharing configured so that the MBP might be able to access the external drives as well.
    Thanx, Linnie
24" Intel iMac (aluminum), 2.8 GHz, 4 MB RAM, 1 TB Hitachi 7200 rpm internal drive

    Hi,
At the back of your iMac there should be two firewire ports, one 400 and one 800. If you are trying to cable the two drives together and use a single wire to connect to your iMac, I don't think it is possible, instead connect each HD's individually to your iMac's two ports.
In iMac, if file sharing is turned on you can access these HD's from your MBP. If for some reason these two drives don't show up in MBP's Finder, from MBP, connect to your iMac from Finder's "Go" menu item "Connect to Server...", then choose those two drives, one at a time.

  • Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over  stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
    Thanks!

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

  • Intel Imac vs Dual G4 800. Upgrade Advice Needed Please.

I have a Powermac G4 dual 800 loaded with RAM and 3 huge HDs and a 15' monitor. I use the Adobe CS2 suite and Macromedia Studio 8 as well as the ilife stuff and Toast. I am in desperate need of more screen real estate. I want to buy a 20'' or 23' display but it would also cause me to spend at least 200-250 to upgrade the graphics card. So I'm lookin at 1000-1300 just for a new display. Seems like a lot $ince I can get a 20" imac for nearly the same. Ive had this g4 quicksilver for a while and its still awesome but besides the screen size a "lil" speedboost would be nice. So...
    1. If I buy a G5 Imac am I kind of throwing money away when I can "buy for the future" with a core duo?
    2. If I buy the Intel Imac 20" will my adobe and macromedia apps run better under Rosetta than a G4 Dual 800. Or Will I be stuck with practically unusable(like virtual PC slow) software. Any experiences?
    3. Should I buy the G5 Imac 20" and let the Intel Core Duo work out the kinks for another year and enjoy better adobe/macromedia performance.
I know these are common questions right now but I was curious about real world performance compared to a G4 dual 800.

Lets say you got the Core duo. I have a 17" and have used CS2 on it, and considering it is being emulated, it is still pretty fast. I have also used CS2 on my friends G4 DP 800 and let me tell you, the iMac is faster. If I were you, I would buy more ram than comes standard. The iMac G5, to me, would be an unwise decision now with the Core Duos.
The problems with the Core Duo are mostly software based from what I can tell. Hanging, Front Row, Remote issues...etc. Once the new OS X update comes out, they should have far less kinks. In the event that you want to wait for the kinks to be worked out and buy a later model, then stick with the G4 until then. It is a workhorse and will get the job done. But thats just my two cents...

  • "Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?"

“Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?”

To connect both iMacs, you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter, and a FireWire 400 cable, so you will be able to connect both Macs

You can check here what version of Flash player you actually have installed:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):

now i have buyed another ram 2gb 800 mhz because with snow leopard o would have a total of 4 gb.
the question is : have i made a stupid thing? because i'm not sure that my imac could support a bank of 800 mhz (i have tryed to install only the ram of 800 mhz but the machine didn't start)
so help help help i have to know if i have to send back my new ram or i could install it ^^

p.s: sorry for my bad english.-.-,

There were two iMac models where the system bus speed and the RAM speed were mismatched: the Mid '07 iMac with bus speed of 800 GHz, but RAM speed of 667 GHz; and the Early '08 iMac, with bus speed of 1066 GHz and RAM speed of 800 GHz. These two machines appear to cause a lot of confusion with Apple employees, because many folks report being misdirected by Apple employees to purchase the incorrect RAM. (Or perhaps misinformed employees of 3rd party Authorized Apple venders. Some folks confuse 3rd party venders of Apple products with being Apple!)
Those users who have been steered to the wrong RAM speed report that their iMac will usually function with one RAM bar of the faster, incorrect speed, plus one with the correct speed, but that it will not usually function with two RAM bars of the incorrect speed.
An interesting side fact is that Apple reports both these machines as topped out with a maximum of 4 GB of RAM (2 x 2 GB). However, it is now a well established fact that both machines can address 6 GB of RAM (1 x 2 GB + 1 x 4 GB). This is reported by MacTracker, Other World Computing and a poster here in the iMac Intel forums. Dave has provided screenshots of his Mac's Activity Monitor showing the Mac addressing and allocating the use of 6 GB of RAM. He owns one each of the Mid '07 and the Early '08 and reports that 6 GB of RAM has breather new life into both machines.

  • Firewire 800 connection down on an Intel iMac - software or hardware of cab

It appears that my Firewire connection from an intel imac 2GHz seems to be down. It is not showing up in the "More information" section in the in "About This Mac". Is this a software or hardware or cable issue?

    Reset PRAM and then OK

  • Firewire 800 xHD with intel duo core imac?

I need to get some new desktop external hard drives for backup. Want firewire, but all are 800s now.
Can I use them on my iMac6,1 - intel core 2 Duo? ca. 2008-2009. Has 3 ports for 400 Firewire (+ 2 USB which is too slow).
Also, Seagate used to be flawless. Now I read reports of them going bad in days or months. How is WD now? Recommendations?
    Thanks.  ~Ann

First off, FireWire 800 is backwards compatible with FireWire 400 - you just need either a FW800 - FW400 cable, or an adapter you can attach to an existing cable. Many vendors sell them, including MacSales. Then you can use your FW800-based drive on a machine with only FW400 ports (or vice versa).
As for brand - we all have our own horror stories as well as praises to sing. Personally, I run away, quickly, from anything WD and would err towards Seagate or Hitachi (even though the latter is now part of WD <sigh>).

  • My Fantom backup drive is failing. I want to copy the time machine contents to a new backup drive and continue on as if nothing has happened.  Can I do this and if so how?  I have intel iMac running Mountain Lion.  Fantom Drive via Firewire 800.

My Fantom backup drive is failing and I have to send it in for warranty repair.  Before I do that I want to copy the time machine contents to a new drive and then use it for the backup, continuing on as if nothing had gone wrong with the first drive.  Can I do this?  Is it as simple as duplicating the first drive and replacing it with the second? New drive arrives Tuesday PM and both drives have dual firewire 800 ports.

I have used the Disk Utility to verify the contents of the backup drive so I don't think I have any corrupt files.  The drive just takes a minute or so to spin up to speed.  If I turn it off and then back on, it beeps at me for a few seconds and then starts it's slow process of trying to spin.  I think it's a power problem not a data problem.  I have my fingers crossed that it holds on until Tuesday PM when the new drive arrives.  I'm thinking that my two options are to duplicate the bad drive or partition the new drive and put the old backups on one partition and start afresh on the second partition.  Any input?
And thanks to both of you for the valuable information so far!

  • FireWire Bus Power - How Much Power?

Is there any way to find out how many watts the FireWire bus power is on a Mac?
    I have one of these:
    http://www.wiebetech.com/products/ultragbplus.php
It's an external bus powered FireWire 800 drive. I have the 500GB version. It runs flawlessly on bus power on my PowerBook G4 17" using the FW 800 cable, and even runs fine on bus power when I try the FW400-to-FW800 cable.
On my Intel iMac Core Duo 20" though, it wil not run on bus power using the very same 400-to-800 cable so I guess the bus power on the iMac has... eh... less power.
It works fine on an iMac G5 using 400-to-800 but on the Intel iMac I have to attach the optional power supply to use it.
QUESTION: Has the bus power on the MacBook Pro changed too, is it lower than on the PowerBook G4???
    This IS a strange one...
    Intel iMac 2gHz/500/2GB/20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

According to a FireWire white paper distributed by WiebeTech, FireWire ports usually provide 6-15 watts. A 3,5-inch drive needs 8.
My Intel iMac is not damaged. Any 2,5-inch bus powered drive works flawlessly. I tried this 500GB drive on three iMac G5 machines, works on bus power on all of them. Tried two different PowerBook G4s and it works on bus power on them too. I have now tried three different Intel iMac Core Duo machines and it does not work on any of them so obviously Apple has lowered the FireWire bus power output to just below what this drive needs.
I sent an email to WiebeTech who confirms this as a "known issue" and they don't know how the drive works with the MacBook Pro.... YET.
I guess I will have to try it out, just have to find an MBP

  • Question? Best Workflow HD/HDV and Reframing/Scaling to Export to both HD and SD when working in an HD Timeline?

Just wondering, what is the best method for working with HD Footage both HDV 1440x1080 and HD 1920x1080
Not long been using Adobe Premiere Pro CC, just switched over from Grass Valley EDIUS 6.08 and atempting my first Stage Show Multi Camera.
Source is 5 HDV PAL and 1x1920x180 60fps MP4 file from a Sanyo Handy Cam.
Final delivery is going to be DVD.
Have done a few smaller projects prior to and normally have edited in HDV 1440x1080 50i PAL and exported to whatever format I need.
Slightly different this time, I need to I need to crop/reframe some video from a couple of the Static locked off cameras. I know what to do but at moment though, I'm very much undecided which method to use for best results.
Doing some testing I notice that if I import the footage and edit in my usual  HD Timeline as said above, then I go into Motion and Scale and reframe to suit, then the picture still
looks better still Full Screen on my 2nd Monitor in the HD Timeline than if I switch the Sequence Settings to SD DV PAL.
I am wondering how the scaler works when exporting. Say I go with the original HD Sequence, scale the Locked off Shots as I want them, then export to SD DV PAL then does the Adobe Media Encoder take into account that I am working in a HD Sequence (HDV 1440x1080 50i PAL) and then Scale to suit or does upscaling go in an HD Timeline then Exporting to SD make things worse, I am asking this as I still like to have the option to output an HD file for the Web and possible Bluray or Mobile Device later on.
I also still prefer working in an HD Timeline as for the other Camera Angles, then it is easier to judge focus since the image is sharper, as apposed to working in an SD Sequence.
I guess the other option I suppose is to edit in HD and then switch the Sequence Settings later on to SD before Export, but not sure that would work with the scaling? Or is that the same as working in an HD Timeline anyway and then selecting an SD Preset in the Adobe Media Encoder anyway?
I guess what I am saying is, if I say for example, Scale a HDV source to 130% or then export to SD in the AME then, is the AME upscalling the original HDV Source to 130% Loosing Quality firstly (making less pixels that to begin with), then downscaling back again to 100% SD Resolution, loosing quality once more, or does it see that the source is HD and has more pixels to use and take that into account? If you get what I am saying. Obviously if I am exporting to any HD Format then, I understand that where will be some quality lose with any amount of HD scale.
I also read that it is less CPU resource full working in the native resolution of the media when editing, especially on an older system.
The other option is to work in an 720 Preset possiblely?
At the moment I don't have a proper Preview device and am making do with the 2nd Display on my Graphics Card GTX 760.
I was looking at getting a Blackmagic Device for preview, or possible one of the Matrox.
It is a shame really, since I already have the Canopus HD Storm in the PC, which I was using with EDIUS for a lovely full screen preview to a 32" TV, since looked great, so since switthcing to Premiere, I can't use it and am having to make do with the GTX 760. Which isn't as good.
Maybe there is some setting I can alter to get a better Playback Image?
Anyway, I notice that the Full Screen Image from the GTX 760 is not as clear as it should be when editing, especially whilst playing back the image is slightly soft and more so when in the Multicam Mode it is even softer.
I am not sure if this is because my computer is not quiet fast enough? Maybe I should post this in a seperate thread in the Hardware forum, but I thought it was worth mentioned in this post aswell.
    SYSTEM SPECS
    Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR (Socket 775) Motherboard
    8GB DDR PC-800 RAM (4x2 Sticks)
    Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz
60GB OCZ SSD (FM-25S2S-60GBP2 ATA Device)
2 TB 7200 Sata 300 Hard Drive - For Video (Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 ATA Device)
    Windows 7 SP1 x64
So in short At the moment I am undecided which method is best to use

Your Creative camera is not the best one could wish for. Open a 1280 x 720 sequence, import some Creative footage, use motion scale to fit it in and judge the quality for yourself. My guess is you will be disappointed in the quality. Then when outputting to DVD you will reduce the resolution and quality again, making it even worse.
So, my suggestion is, don't follow that route.
Ultimately you will end up with 720 x 576 material for your DVD. You already need to upscale your Creative footage, and change the PAR and take serious quality hits, do not increase your problems by upscaling and then downscaling again.

its strange that the cpu has only 800MHz during the bench.
    my ondemand threshold: 95
does the bench cause less then 95%?

While I ran the benchmarks gkrellm showed my cores running at 3200MHz,

    This on a 3x AMD AthlonII X3 450, modules powernow_k8 and cpufreq_ondemand.
Stepping is 800-2000-2500-3200. Threshold is the default 95%.
I don't think hardinfo is reporting cpu frequency correctly.
Aha. Check out this bug from the hardinfo site:
    http://bugs.hardinfo.org/showreport.php?bugid=48
This is a known bug. If you're using cpufreq with the ondemand governor, then the tests will be performed at 3GHz on your machine, as they're quite CPU intensive and the governor will automatically pump out more juice to the CPU.
However, HardInfo only measures the CPU speed once, and that's the speed it displays on the benchmark window.
Oh thank you for the answer, good Sir!
Can you answer the 3rd question?: do you really need laptopmodetools, acpi, cpufreq & acpid? or could i deinst one of them?
