IMac G4 dead screen repair

My LCD screen failed in late May, and because it was still covered by AppleCare, I sent it off to an Apple repair center. They diagnosed the problem as a problem logic board. It has now been more than a month, and the logic board has been on "backorder," I assume from Apple.
My apologies, but I couldn't find any other place to ask this question. Is this a normal delay? Are other folks experiencing he same delay?
Any insights on this would be most helpful for my peace of mind.
Thanks, Jim
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I had a logic board changed at the end of last year - it took an AASP (so not Apple themselves) 36hrs flat to order the part, receive and install the board. Definitely hassle them lots.

  • Remote log into iMac with dead screen

I have inherited an iMac G5 run Tiger 10.4 that suffers from a graphics card failure. I've given up any attempts to repair the machine as a functional unit, but I am trying to repurpose the machine into a headless server for media and Time machine.
I would like to get some sort of VNC/Screen sharing setup working so I can remotely connect to the machine's UI. However, I don't know what any of the settings on the machine are now (i'm not even sure it will connect to my wireless network). Assuming I can get a network connection to the machine, what is the best way to log in and change the settings? Can I terminal log-in/SSH and make changes so that screen sharing will be enabled? I don't have much experience connecting to a machine without a graphical UI.
I assume the worst case I can pull the HD and connect it to another machine to change settings, then replace it in the iMac.
Any thoughts on the this matter? Thanks in advance

    Duane,
Please note it may be possible. I'm working on the issue, see this thread:

  • Old iMac (2007) dead screen; what are my options?

I have an old iMac from 2007, one of the polycarbonate models, running OS X 10.6.8, which recently lost its screen. By "lost," I mean that one night as I was using it, the screen stopped refreshing the image of the show I was watching, and did not change until I manually shut down the computer. Since that time, whenever I turn it on the screen is completely black. Despite this, I still appear to be able to successfully input commands with the keyboard. I haven't consulted a technician yet, but from what I read it seems that the screen data drive is bad; it's not just the backlight.
    My questions are two:
What price range should I look for to get the screen fixed, if that's possible at this point?
What are my options for getting into this mac to perform one last backup?  (I have another iMac from the same era that had another screen problem which eventually rendered it useless, but before it went completely bad I set it up to allow screen sharing over wi-fi, so I can still get into that one, which makes me wonder if I can hack into this iMac through its wifi.)

AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine..

  • Installing OS X on iMac with dead screen

    Here's a tricky one...
My friend has an iMac Intel Core 2 (it might be Intel Core 1, anyway it's an older white model...)
His screen died couple of months back, it's just black no power in it... So he's using a secondary monitor and everything is fine.
Except that he's still stuck in Tiger because he did not want to try to install a new OS with no screen... Understandable...
So how would I do this...
I could plug a second Mac and install Lion next month using firewire.
But when I'm going to start the iMac on first launch, It certainly won't default to the second display, there will be no way for me to setup de first steps blind...
    What are my options ?
Is there any command lines I could do via another computer, even if no users are created on the iMac yet ?
Maybe a way to modify the "system kernel" to auto switch to the second display on startup ?
    Thanks !

Does the "other mac" have to be the same iMac model or any Intel Mac would do ?
There must be system files that are different on installation depending on the machine... No ?
Maybe Apple installs all available drivers for all Mac's in the OS install...
    Thank you !

  • Imac (with dead screen) file transfer to macbook

    Hello
I recently bought a replacement macbook. my imac's screen one night slanted diagonally and froze and when turned off and on the screen never came back. i tried hooking up external monitors to see if it was just a screen problem, unfortunately no. based on different tests and the type of imac i believe that the files are still safe and secure, the computer turns on fine but i have no way of seeing the folders and files, like the migration assistant. i have no idea what to do and i would prefer to do it myself than have apple charge me money for it.
    thanks

I'm not sure what you want but if you want to transfer the files off the imac you should be able to use migration assistant. reboot the imac and hold "t" at the chime. this will boot it in target mode. connect it to the new macbook and start migration assistant on the macbook (it's in /Applications/Utilities). this will let you transfer user data and applications to the macbook.

  • My i Pod touch still works but it has a dead screen! How can i fix this??!!

I just got the iPod for Christmas last year but recently my little brother dropped it and it became a dead screen! How can i fix this problem?! HELP!!!!!!!!

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price (for 4G iPod, $199 for 64 GB and $99 for the others). They do not fix yours.

  • 6030 dead screen

I have Mobile 6030 with dead screen, i can't see any thing, i want to copy all the contacts from the Phone to the SIM card, can any one help me the way to do that with steps as i can't see any thing.
I want someone to tell how , like press menu  then press 3 and scroll down twice and so on
    it URGENT for me

Yes, it's possible that your external display is working just fine but that there may be a problem with the screen. How recently did you have the screen repaired? There should be some sort of warranty on the repair (if done by Apple, 90 days).
Did the Apple tech tell you why he/she suspected that you have a bad logic board? If your GPU were damaged you wouldn't be able to view the external display. And the GPU on your model is an integrated GPU, not a discrete GPU.
Call back about the logic board replacement suggestion, at least.

  • Dead screen, transfering documents via firewire - need help

    Greetings,
So I've got a 1 Ghz iMac (floating pivot screen.) - my primary mission critical workstation. My screen died today. Grrrr.
No time to muck about, I went out and purchased a mac mini (1.5 Ghz single intel core), I want to transfer all data from the old box to the new asap.
The migration assistant that appears at first boot up is cool, and I was able to move all applications. (handy!)
Problem is that I couldn't move all my user documents because the old Mac's drive is 80 gig and the new is only 60. So I figured I would just drag and drop as much as I can manually.
I've gone and reattached the old mac to the new via firewire and booted up the old box as an external drive. Problem is, when I open up the user folder on the old hard drive I'm not seeing any files.... ie. all folders including the old desktop folder are empty....its like the files are hidden or something.
    Help please.

could it be because under ownership and permissions I have no access to these folders? Is that why the folders "appear" empty? - then my next question would be, how can I give myself access to them?
Remembering that I am unable to boot up and use the old iMac (except in external drive mode) since the screen (or video card???) is dead.
Also - I'm attempting spotlight searches from the new mac on the old mac's HD for known files on the old mac's desktop and its coming back with nothing...
    What a mess ....maybe

  • Dead screen, laptop locked in Safe Mode with no HDMI driver for external monitor

    Hi,
Background: This is a Windows 8 pre-loaded notebook, I have updated to 8.1 (some months ago) via the Store.
I recently had the dead screen that appears quite common with HP notebooks.
I connected an external monitor, notebook was fully functional.
Backed up all contents, then updated graphics driver, no improvement.
Then went into msconfig and forced boot into safe mode...
Now, I cannot control the notebook at all because I can't see anything.  At this point I am just trying to get control of the notebook so I can wipe it, and sell it to a repair place, or as a notebook that works fine with a docking station or external monitor.
    Questions I have:
    1. WITHOUT SEEING THE SCREEN (dead) is there any way to get it to boot back to Windows Normal mode, or any other HDMI-driver enabled mode?
    2. As an alternative is there any way I can get it to boot from a USB to any operating system so I can wipe the HDD and start again?
    3. Would (2) even work if I need a HDMI driver to operate the notebook - would it be possible to reinstall an OS with a dead screen, because I would need to be able to run an external monitor?
    4. How do I find my Windows Product Key without access to the notebook (can HP help here, from my notebook serial #)?
    5. Any way to perhaps mount the HDD externally in order to manually edit the boot config to return it to Windows Normal booting?
Grateful for your comments.  Remember my objective is NOT TO FIX IT, just to get it to drive an external monitor again so I can part with this notebook with some kind of financial return.

    Hi @Dom_Oz ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a terrific place to find answers.
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I see that your display quit and you connected an external monitor and it was functioning well.  You backed up all your data and updated graphic drivers but there was no improvement.  You booted into safe mode and now both screens are blank.
Since both screens are blank when you booted into safe mode, I would try a Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset.
to try and bring back the external monitor.
If that does not work, can could try to do a recovery Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
The Windows product key is tattooed in the bios and is hidden, but if you do a recovery it should automatically get picked up.
Yes you can try booting to an OS on a USB stick to wipe the hard drive.
Yes you can remove the hard drive and install it in an external case and then edit as you wish or format  from there.
If you edit the boot config and manage to have Windows reboot, I would do a factory recovery, this will  format the drive and return back to its original condition.
    I hope this helps.

  • 20" G4 dead screen :( please help

    Hi guys,
A friend of mine has given me what he thought was a dead iMac G4, he thought it was dead as nothing appears on the screen. I've bought and connected a mini vga to VGA on it and run it through my 22" Samsung and it booted to the CD so I've installed Leopard on it and upgraded the ram to 1.25Gb, I'd really like to get the screen back working on it and have tried various things, reset the PRAM and the PMU but no joy. I'm thinking it could be the inverter anyone got any other suggestions or ways I could prove what is wrong as I don't want to buy the inverter to find out it is a dead screen although the screen backlight appears to work. I'm based in the UK so finding an inverter for a 20" may be difficult ??
I guess I could try fitting my 22" screen to the arm instead for turn it into a Mac Dome
    Thanks in advance.

Hello schwebs900 and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
<<I know I can boot off of the install disc, but does it matter if I use the install disc for my iMac?>>

System Specific Disk Restriction note:
It is important to note, that installation of operating systems from a different Mac model will not always work right. Use only the disks which come with the Mac in question. Mac Update FAQ's: http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#SYSTEMSPECIFIC
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).Go here:

If you can find someone with another Mac, you might be able to back up your important files using Target Disk Mode, instructions here: Transferring files between two computers using FireWire
    To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the first computer and leave the second computer on.
Connect the two computers using a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. (If both computers have higher-speed FireWire 800 ports in addition to the standard FireWire 400 ports, you can use a 9-pin to 9-pin cable with the FireWire 800 ports to transfer data at higher speeds.)
Open System Preferences, click the Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start up the first computer while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon for the first computer appears on the desktop on the second computer. Drag files to and from the disk to transfer them.
When you finish, eject the first computer's disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
Push the power button on the first computer to shut it down and disconnect the FireWire cable.

  • IMac 17" Flat screen - display remains black

    Hi,
I've a IMac 17" Flat screen, and after he went into sleep, I cannot wake up my screen...! When I put on the mac, the screen becomes a little less black but that's all... Using external screen (video out on the IMac) gives good results on the other screen... Anyone knows what happens?
I've already reset PMU, PRAM is zapped (3 times), check cables, ...
    Thanks,
    Bart M.

    Hi All,
The 'black screen upon wake from sleep' condition is on my daughter's 20" iMac G4 as well. This computer is a refurbished one ordered from the online Apple Store. Right out of the box it had the same problem as Brian described - electrical noise going across the screen (though only intermittantly) and gradually got worse until we now have only the black screen when it wakes up.
After a few calls, Apple Care said this is a 'known issue' with refubished 17" and 20" flat panel iMacs. They believe it is a software problem and they are seeking a solution. They recommend to disable sleep mode until they find a fix. No word on how or if we would be contacted when such a fix is available.
A local CompUSA (an authorized Apple repair center) tech said to bring it in, because it sounds to him like a problem with the inverter board. If so, it would be covered under the warranty. I wonder if this is a weakness with these iMac models. We'll be taking it in within the next couple weeks and will report the results.

  • IMac 27" locked screen

My iMac goes into screen saver, but when screen shuts off it will not appear unless I restart machine? WTH??

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
    Reboot, test again.

  • IMac has gray screen with spinning wheel, but cannot login

After power failure last night, iMac has gray screen with spinning wheel when turned on, but does not go to login screen.

Having the same problem myself. iMac locked up and I had to hold the power button to turn it off. Ended up with the apple logo screen and spinning wheel. I tried the disk repair and got the same message as yourself, in that it couldn't repair it.
I linked up an external hard drive and installed OSX on it and booted from it. I was able to recover some files, but most I couldn't. I'm currently giving it a one pass erase in the hope (long shot) that a complete pass through the hard drive will show up any faults. Has anyone had this problem and been able to continue using the same hard drive? I really don't relish the thought of having to send it off to be replaced :-/
Assuming that the erase goes well I plan to put OSX back onto it and then run disk utility from directly on the drive and see if any faults show up. I'm kicking myself for not taking advantage of TimeMachine, but we live and learn.

  • External monitor for macbook pro with dead screen

Macbook pro built in 2007 has a dead screen but is otherwise ok. Connected external monitor displays only the astral starburst screen on all macs. How can I get the monitor to display my desktop if I can't see the macbook screen?

Connected external monitor displays only the astral starburst screen on all macs.
Then it is working as designed.
By default, the external screen is combined with the built-in screen into an Extended Desktop, as seen in the Arrange tab below. You need to (Gather Windows) to get all controls on all displays, then drag the tiny white MenuBar to the display where you want it to appear. Then things will begin to operate as you expect.
